MI Default Units

1999-10-26 Thread Lovett Alan

I have posted a question previously on the list with regard to setting
default units with no success.
(I was trying to change the settings so that Map, Options, Distance Units -
millimetres Map, Options, Area - hectares are
the default settings.) Further reading of the manual (never thought i'd see
the day.) led me to the mapbasic section of Set Map Statement. I
notice in here that there is reference to setting the distance units the
area units so that I assume they become the defaults. Question now is how
do I get into the syntax of the Set Map Statement so that I can change these
settings, then save those changes ? (remember I am not a Mapbasic power
user)

My aim is to make these settings the default as they are the ones that I
have to change every single time I start up Mapinfo.

ps. I have tried inputting into mapbasic "Set Area Units "hectare" Set
Distance Units "mm", saving these settings. Is there some way I can save
these settings to say a "Startup.wor" for them to become the defaults ?

TIA,

Yep, here it is straight out of the AutoCAD Help file :-

'You can export your drawing in AutoCAD's Drawing Web Format (DWF). A
DWF file is a highly compressed 2D vector file that you can use to
publish your AutoCAD drawing on the World Wide Web. Using a Web
browser, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer,
and the WHIP! plug-in provided by Autodesk, others can view your
drawings via the Internet (provided you have posted them to an
Internet server and the viewer has Internet access). The WHIP! plug-in
provides dynamic pan and zoom capabilities. '

If you need the WHIP! plug-in you can get it at
http://www.autodesk.com/products/autocad/whip/whip.htm
(at least that's where it used to be.

MI Re: Ordnance Survey Topo Data

1999-10-26 Thread Gareth Hardman

Sharon,

For the complete picture on all things Ordnance Survey GB check out the web
site (http://www.ordsvy.gov.uk). That will give you a pretty good picture of
what they have to offer and at what price etc. You will be approaching them
at an interesting time as they have recently announced fairly large price
reductions on many of the smaller scale data sets. Data pricing is finally
beginning to follow the US model - though still a long way to go. Land-Form
PANORAMA (see below) has certainly been affected by this change - dropped
from £20,000 to £5000 for complete UK coverage!

In brief the height data products you need will need to look at are the
"Land-Form" products - either "Land-Form PROFILE" (nominally 1:10 000 scale)
or "Land-Form PANORAMA" (nominally 1:50 000 scale). They come in 5km x 5km
and 20km x 20km tiles respectively. If you ask them nicely they may even
work out the number of tiles that cover Glasgow for you - a nice little task
for GISLab (sorry guys...its coming your way..!)

These products have both contour and DTM variants. They are not currently
available in MapInfo format - OS deliver them in either DXF or in their own
proprietary format NTF (National Transfer Format). I have heard a whisper on
the OS grapevine however that indicates that this situation may very well
change soon (soon being a relative term where Government bodies are
concerned!) with data being available in the more popular formats.

If you need any further info on these products (such as relative accuracies,
etc.) then mail me at any time. Alternatively speak to the OS Sales Desk on

Subject: MI: Ordnance Survey Topo Data

 Hello Everyone.
I've been trying to track down a supplier for topographic data of Great
Britain. I have contacted the Canadian supplier for OS but they directed
me straight to the OS (Ordnance Survey) for digital data. So I emailed
 them and they said I
have to phone Britain to get the info I want. So, I'm asking you fine
folks for some information. Ideally we are interested in purchasing
elevation data/contours/spot heights. I posted an inquiry regarding DXF
files last week because I had downloaded a sample file. I still haven't
got that working yet but am trusting the fog will clear on that challenge
with time. For now, I am looking for a contact who is knowledgable
regarding how OS packages their data, if it comes in MI format, how much
is it per tile, how many tiles would it take to cover Glasgow? It seems to
me, that the scale is irrelevant since the data is so scarce. We'll take
whatever scale we can! So, if anyone in MI-list world can help, we would
 be forever grateful.

MI MapInfo vs ArcInfo

1999-10-26 Thread Reitano, Joe

I hoping you or someone could help me. I'm using a whole suite of MapInfo
products. I'm constantly being asked how these products compare to ESRI
products. I was looking for some type of comparison between the two
companies products. The MapInfo products which I currently use are:
MapInfo Professional v5.5, Vertical Mapper v2.0, MapBasic v5.0, MapXtreme,
MapMarker, and TargetPro. What would be their closest ESRI counterpart?
What are ArcInfo, ArcView, Avenue, AML, MapObjects, etc? Any help anyone
can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

CATALOGUE VERSION CHOICES:

1. This version can be read by everyone, no matter what type of
computer you use, or what type of software you use. It is a simple
format, with just our entire catalogue pasted into the body of a
single email message, 316K in size. If you use pine or elm on a unix
system or an advanced software version such as Eudora Pro 3.0 or
later, you will most likely receive it as a single email message.
However, if your software limits incoming email messages to a
certain size, say 32K or so, then your software will split it into
multiple email message parts. Whether you receive it as a single
email message or multiple part email messages, you can easily
paste it into one whole text document with your word processor, in
 about 10 minutes or so.
2. For more advanced computer users: attached plain ascii text file
~316K - you must know how to download an attached text file and
then be able to locate it on your hard drive or system home
directory; it can then be opened with any pc or mac word processing
software. If in doubt, don't ask for this version. This isn't for
internet *newbies.* Better to order option 1 and spend a few minutes
pasting them into one whole text document with your word processor,
than to waste hours trying to figure how to deal with this option.
This version is great for doing keyword searches and jumping around
within the catalogue with your word processing software, if your
normal email reading software doesn't allow this.

VERY IMPORTANT DIRECTIONS TO ENSURE THAT YOU GET A REPLY:

1. no reply forms can be accepted by emailonly via fax or smail.

2. your form must be typewritten or printed out on your computer printer
before you fax it; sorry, but *no* handwritten forms will be acknowledged.
If you can't find someone with a typewriter or a computer printer, we
apologize for not being able to reply to you.

3. forms not *completely* filled in will not be acknowledged.

6. you will receive a reply within 1 business day directly from the
company making the offer via email. Therefore you must have an email
address. If you read this message, then you must have an email address, or
access to one, at least. :-)

7.   your fax must not exceed 2 pages in length (*including* cover page);
your first page may be a cover page, but your reply form must appear on
next page if you include a cover page. Faxes of 2 or more pages will be
detected, then auto-terminated and deleted. Your fax goes directly onto
our 10.0 gigabyte hard drive and we must limit all incoming faxes to 1
page.

8. all faxes must begin with:
*cut here/begin---*
and must end with:

MI Pictures on buttons

1999-10-26 Thread Gerald Kornelsen

I haven't tried this, but someone pointed to this when I was trying to create
custom tool buttons.

http://members.aol.com/maptools/custbtn2.html
---
I have attached some instructions sent to me by Thomas Gulden. Between
his instructions, VB help and MI MB help, I was able to create a couple of
buttons.

Hope this helps

Gerald Kornelsen

You just start a new project in Visual Basic and from the Wizard which popped up in my
VB 5 choose Active X Document DLL.

Visual Basic then arranges the project for you. The main hassle is to create the
required resource file (*.rc) which is a kind of container for your bitmap icons. I
remember it as a simple ASCII-Text file which you can create and edit with notepad for
example. It just contains the required plain text commands to bind your bitmaps into
the resource file, which will be compiled (see below). This is the only place where
some knowledge of special commands comes in, but all necessary help to do that I could
obtain from the MSDN-CD shipped with VB 5 Pro and from the VB online help. Then you
have to compile the resource file into a compiled resource file which has a *.res
extension.

On the VB 5 CD there was a resource compiler included, it was under
\Tools\Resource\RC32, the file is Rc.exe. I think there was also a help file for it.

Once you have created the *.res file, in VB the only thing you have to do is to choose
Add File and specifiy your *.res file. Then the resource file is added to your
project. There is no VB coding required (as I can recall) or if, it is very little.

Also I remember that for each custom icon you have to bind two bitmaps (one for small
one for large icons) into your resource file, the pairs have two consecutive ID
numbers. The first number will be the icon ID for your custom button in MapBasic.

These icons must be stored locally on each PC that uses them.

MI Error: Region to Grid

1999-10-26 Thread jchapin

SWM, 23, 6'-1", 178 lbs., new to MapInfo, seeks to convert polygons/regions to
points/grid. Using MI 5.5 and Vertical Mapper 2.0 (upgraded from 1.5). When I
use the Region to Grid function in VM (as previously suggested on the list), the
following error occurs: 'File Open has Failed.' No new files are created and
the region to grid interface closes. I've tried this with the file containing
the polygons open, with it closed, with the regions highlighted in the map file,
with different grid cell sizesin short, every combo I can think of. And
still I get the same error message. I'm running on a Pentium 500, 256 Mb RAM.
Any clues?

MI-Thematic map

1999-10-26 Thread Karen_Storteboom

Hi everyone anyone. I have two questions

1.) Does anyone know of an utility to transfer thematic map styles to the
original data file. I'd like to be able to save the thematic
representation without using workspaces.

2.) Does anyone know of an MBX that stores Metadata internally in a tab
format file, I'd like to store the origin, creator and data details
within a file. Ideally the tool would ask you at the point of file
creation, rather than having the entry of the metadata voluntary.

Thanks in advance to anyone replying. Your ideas and thoughts are much
appreciated.

PC and uploaded tables with EasyLoader 4.0 and displayed maps with MI Pro 5.5
right away. I my haste, and on my single NT workstation, I could not see the
difference between Oracle8i Personal Edition and the Oracle8i Enterprise
Edition that initially installed and used.

Another little goodie for all you NT and Web server types

MI Re: Reorganizing files

1999-10-26 Thread Francois Bergeron

Hi David,

I propose to you WorkspaceControl, a tool very interesting for the
workspaces in
MapInfo. You will be able easily to modify the repertories of your
tables with this
program. Try it!!

WorkspaceControl is available at : www.4thbeachsoftware.com

François

MI STDS vector format maps

1999-10-26 Thread Mark Hall

As you may be aware the data from the USGS's 1:24,000 scale maps is
available for free in a vector format on the USGS website for the whole of
the US. Unfortunately it is now only available in STDS format. There are a
number of public domain translators available on the web page but I have
been unsuccessful in getting any of these to work. Anyone know of a way to
translate these files into something usable in MapInfo?

MI Re: reorganizing files

1999-10-26 Thread Eric M. Durrance

I recently moved all of our tables from a C:\ drive to a M:\ drive.
Since the *.wor can be opened and read in Word, I used the search and
replace function of Word to replace all C:\ with a M:\. This works fine,
and table names and types can be changed here also. Don't erase a line
though, if you no longer use a table or it doesn't exist anymore, just
point it to any other table.

SUM: Re: MI: Overflow error message

1999-10-26 Thread a. pollock

Tony,

Thanks! It seems that we had a variable declared as decimal 8,0 and the DB
Admin changed the field to 10,0 without telling anyone causing the overflow
to occur. Go figure! I guess it always pays to look at the data before
running programs. I'll pass this along to my programmers.

Thanks again for the help.

Had this problem myselft the other day. My variable was defined as a
smallint. I changed it to an integer and it fixed it.

Are there limitations on the type of variable you are using? EG text
variables

NOt sure if I have been of any help.

Good luck.

MI RE: Overflow error message

1999-10-26 Thread Humphrey, Ben

I just posted a question along the same lines, with regards to overflow
errors when appending tables. The error is most definitely happening during
the insert statement, although I'm waiting to hear back too. My only guess
is that it has something to do with a max number of records you can have in
a table. That's just a guess though...

Attached is a snip of code that is causing an overflow error in the
program. I've never seen an error of this type, nor is it referenced in
any of the books or online help. I've tried rebooting, etc. to no avail.

 Any assistance is appreciated.

 Thanks!

SELECT * FROM land into Land1
 ELSE
Select * from land where land.obj within buffer_obj into Land1
 END IF

MI TEXT LABLES

1999-10-26 Thread Scott Barling

Is there a way to convert an entire layers labels into text objects without
having the whole layer in view?

When I do this using the MapBasic applications Labeler or AutoLabeler I get
text which is huge. I want the text to be about 7 pt when the map is at a
scale of 1:1000.

Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Scott Barling
