RE: MI midirections.com
Well, I just tried home-to-work and found a couple of issues: 1) My house has moved about 2 blocks down the street, which is fine because the houses are nicer down there, but might just confuse my guests. 2) The route to my office was the longest of 3 ways to go - by about 2 miles and maybe 10 minutes. Furthermore, a freeway route that is shown on the map (and the shortest one in my experience) was completely ignored. 3) My office is placed right (within 200 feet), but the directions show me going a block past the light where I would turn, hanging a U-turn (an illegal one at that) and driving back a block in order to make a simple left turn. 4) Zoom in / out is pretty easy to confuse - I zoomed in on my house and then backed up using the "Back" button on the browser. I then tried to zoom in on my office and was put back at my house. 5) The quality of the maps is nothing to write home about - this looks like it might be TIGER97 or something like that. I'd say that the issue is probably in the underlying data - it doesn't look like it's the best available. The maps also need a bit of work - street labeling looks like something right out of MI (not good), and the actual image is not great - lots of jaggy lines. However, the highway shields look pretty cool. Happy Mapping. RE: MI Frame shape
Hi Dave You are stuck with the rectangular frame shape. However, the creative use of some layering of objects in the layout may get you what you want. Remember, you _can_ control the "Z Order" of objects in the layout, so it is possible to lay an object over the map in the frame. A little judicious work with some of the graphical objects (circle, rectangle, line, etc.) will probably get you the results you want. RE: MI zip
Hi Dyan I hope you have money riding on this one! There is no function built into Mapinfo that will look for a specific zip code. If you have a zip code table open you can query it and then, in a mapper window, select Query | Find Selection to center the map on the zip code that was found (provide one _was_ found). You could certainly write such a functon using Mapbasic, but there is nothing "built in" that works like this specificially for zip codes. MI SUM - World Cities Database
Hi All Seems that worldwide city databases are in short supply - at least free ones are. Here is what I found: 1) The following site has a fairly large city database that can be queried - and feeds back a lat/long and some other minor data. This is what I actually used for most of my research (I only had about 80 cities to look up). http://www.heavens-above.com/countries.asp 2) Alan pritchard suggested the Global Gazetteer as a source. This certainly has a large collection of city data, but the price was more than my budget (any price was more than my budget for that matter - don't you just love cheap clients?). The URL is http://www.allm-geodata.com. In all fairness, the data prices here were quite reasonable and I certainly bookmarked this site for future consideration. 3) Glenn Letham of GeoComm.com suggested checking his site out for a couple of point files. There was one with about 13,000 entries that also helped - but it doesn't cover a lot of the smaller cities. The URL for GeoComm is http://software.geocomm.com/data/ That's about it - I managed to find most of what I needed, but we sure could use a good, cheap data file of world cities. Then again, we could also use a really good 5 cent cigar, too :) Thanks for the help everyone! RE: MI creating points from centroids
Hi Sidney It's pretty simple actually - just a few steps. 1) Make a copy of your original table - use File | Save Copy As 2) Close the original and open the copy 3) Use the Table | Maintenance | Table Structure command to add two columns to your new table - call them X and Y and set the type to Decimal 16, 8 4) Use the Table | Update Column command to get the centroid information into the new columns - you'l do this twice, once for X and once for Y. Pick your table, select the X or Y column and then, for the Value field, type either CentroidX(obj) or CentroidY(obj). 5) Save your table 6) Select Table | Maintenance | Table Structure and select your table. Uncheck the "Table Is Mappable" option and click "Ok". You have just removed the map objects from your table. 7) Select Table | Create Points, select your table, make sure the X and Y columns are set correctly, and click Ok. You now have a map of points representing the centroids of the polygons you started with. RE: MI Opening HTML pages within MapInfo
Hi Graham Well, you are going down the right track (does that translate to the Queen's English?) with the HTML output - it's a great way to make report. VB, however, will not do the job for dll's - it produces ActiveX dll's which are not the same as a standard dll - and MB requires a standard dll. You have a couple of options: 1) Use Delphi (or Visual C++ if you have a someone who codes in it) to write the dll. Delphi is rather similar to VB (the language is Pascal instead of BASIC) but it has the capability to write true dll's. It also includes an HTML viewer control so you could actually just pop up a window or dialog containing the report output - a potentially neater solution than spawning another copy of a web browser. Delphi is relatively inexpensive, fairly easy to learn, and there are examples out there of making it work with Mapinfo - check out theWhite Papers section of http://www.directionsmag.com for some samples and instructions. 2) If you must program in BASIC then check out PowerBasic at http://www.powerbasic.com - it's not a true visual development environment (although it does have a GUI builder that does a lot) but it _does_ produce true dll's. It's also a pretty good development environment and it's output is blindingly fast at a lot of things. Programs written in PowerBasic frequently run rings around similar code written in Visual Basic. I personally prefer Delphi, but that's because I learned Pascal a long time ago and then I was developing MB dll's in Delphi long before I ever heard of PowerBasic. 3) I _think_ you can issue a command through MB to start an external program - and you _might_ be able to do this with either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. However, this is not exactly the best solution out there and it is klunky at best). Good luck! RE: Text from Word to MI 5.5
Hi Jeff There are a couple of options (hacks for you programmers): 1) Use Word as your layout program - import the map into Word and do your layout around it. I usually dump it to an image using File | Save Window As but it is also possible to copy the map window and paste it as an OLE object. To get a higher resolution of the image you export, specify an image width of about 3 times the final size when using the File | Save Window As command. 2) Do the same thing - but in PowerPoint. PowerPoint actually makes a pretty good layout program and it handles images better than Word. It also has a number of easier-to-use graphics tools that make the layout process work better. I have had great luck using PowerPoint as the poor man's desktop publisher - it's easy to use, the output can be scaled and it is actually pretty powerful. You not only get a document that prints well, but also the basis for a powerful slide presentation. 3) The third option (and this can work very well) is to get your text out to an image file. This is not always easy to do, but it is possible. The image file can then be placed in a Mapinfo layout window. Whatever choice you make, you will probably find that you need to edit the image a bit. I would suggest a wonderful shareware image editor - PaintShop Pro. Go to http://www.jasc.com to download a 30 day trial - which is usually enough for a quick project. I would strongly suggest registering the product if you like it - it is a very powerful image editor with a reasonable price (under $250 US I think). Good luck! MI RE: Problems with Deskjet 1120C on network
Hi Peter Here are a few things to consider (and yes, I _do_ have one of these printers) 1) Under Win95 (and probably 98) the deskjet drivers have a memory leak. This really does not show up anywhere, but it will cause very strange behavior - especially as system resources run low. Try checking your system resources when the problem occurs. 2) Print files for maps sent to this printer can be _extremely_ large - make sure you have several hundred megabytes of space free on the spool drive (probably C) at all times. 3) The 1120C does not have an internal processor as such - it relies mostly on the computer itself. Therefore, printing to it through your printer will slow things down - either for you or for the print drivers. This might be causing a problem. 4) Check your printer cable - it should not really be more than 10 feet long and it should support bi-directional printing. Try a new cable - you would be surprised at what an intermittent fault will do printing. 5) Contrary to what HP says, this printer does not really like to be networked. If you _really_ want to screw things up, attach it to one of HP's JetDirect ports :) 6) Consider setting up a small computer to act as a print server. If you have an old P-166 or something similar it should make a wonderful spooling machine. You also get the added advantage of having two computers in your office - makes you look like a real computer geek (maybe good, maybe not so good). 7) Consider moving to Windows NT4 - it works a heck of a lot better than Win98 ever will - at least if you want to get real work done. Also, the drivers for printers tend to be more stable and less buggy - and Mapinfo is extremely happy on an NT box. Good Luck! RE: MI Exporting tables
Hi John Probably the best way is to export the table to a .dbf file (Table | Export, select dBase as file type), open the .dbf in Excel, fix whatever was lost in the process (all fonts, etc), copy your newly formatted Excel spreadsheet and then paste / past special it into Word. Unless you have a really large table (and it sounds like you don't) then this should work just fine. You can also place a _map_ in Word - use the File | Save Window As command and export the map (I usually use .bmp format). Bring it into Word using the Import | Picture | From File command and you have a map to go with your table. RE: MI Housekeeping
Hi Laith I personally have implemented a directory structure and file saving scheme that keeps this problem down. Here's how it works on my system (with about 750,000 tables and 5,000-7,500 workspaces) 1) Store all your main mapping tables like streets, city boundaries, block groups, etc in one main folder. I personally break this down a bit for speed - Major Roads, Highways and Interstates are stored at the US level (in a folder called USA) and larger files (like streets, streams rivers, block group boundaries) are broken down and stored by state. The directory structure looks something like the following: \Mapping Data \Mapping Data\USA \Mapping Data\USA\Boundaries \Mapping Data\USA\Highways \Mapping Data\USA\Water - Oceans and major lakes only \Mapping Data\USA\Data - demographic data files (dbf) \Mapping Data\States\Texas\Roads - the streets go here \Mapping Data\States\Texas\Water - streams, rivers For individual projects I create a folder for my client and then subfolders under them for individual projects. When I make a map the workspace and any files specific to that workspace (road labels, trade areas, etc) are stored in the same folder as the workspace. The directory structure looks like this: \Clients\Client 1 \Clients\Client 1\Project 1 \Clients\Client 1\Project 1\Workspace 1.wor \Clients\Client 1\Project 1\Highway Labels.tab \Clients\Client 1\Project 1\Trade Area Boundary.tab This system has served me very well over the years - you just have to make sure people understand that the main mapping files are _not_ to be moved. Overall, this keeps file sizes down, data duplication to almost nothing and ensures that workspaces always open. I generally assume that anything I created several years ago should open just fine today - and it usually does. You need to plan out your directory structures carefully but, if you do, you should have very few problems with file locations. Drop me a note if you want more info. RE: MI MapInfo to pdf
Hi Declan I have had excellent luck printing to a pdf, with the exception of some bitmaps. We actually produce about 20% of our final output in pdf files and it makes my life _much_ easier. My clients like it, too, because they can reprint (to various printers) as often as they want. The PDF writer also allows you to build documents from multiple sources - pretty cool if you need a map in a report. A couple of comments: 1) You need to get the latest edition of Adobe Acrobat (4.0x) - 3.0 does not work nearly as well. 2) Bitmapped images in a layout window sometimes come out a bit ragged. However, raster underlays in maps seem to work just fine. 3) You will need to tinker a bit to get the right output settings. Overall, I strongly recommend using pdf files - they do a good job and make your maps very transportable. Do the pdf files look pretty true to the originals? Does printed output of the pdf file compare well with printing direct from MapInfo? I've yet to try it but it seems that combining pdf files might be a good way to get map illustrations into reports with reasonable quality (better than saving windows as files) if the map pdfs retain printer quality. RE: MI 5.5 Printing again.
Hi All Actually, I have experienced this with a HP Designjet 350C and MI5/NT4 (not 5.5, just 5.0). I have never been able to trace down the problem but usually turning the printer off and on and closing reopening MI seems to solve it. Maybe it has something to do with phases of the moon? James -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 1999 11:12 PM To: 'Tony Shepherd'; 'MapInfo Email Group (E-mail)' Subject: RE: MI 5.5 Printing again. I too have experienced this problem and I think it has something to do with the printer settings saved in workspaces. The workaround (I think) is to open the workspace, change the number of copies to the required amount, save the workspace, close all and then open the workspace again. If I choose to print more than 1 copy of a layout and change the number of copies in the print dialog box to say 5, I still only get one printed copy! This has only happened since upgrading to MI 5.5, and I have even reinstalled the plotter drivers. Sometime (but not always) I also get the plotter counting down to zero (when plot nesting is turned on) then it just sits there on zero and wont start, with the receiving data light on. Has anybody else had this? I am using NT 4.0 and HP DesignJet 750C. I am considering removing 5.5 and reinstalling V5.0 as printing seemed to work. RE: MI Out of office
Hi Peter Yep, Outlook will try to auto-respond, and that will generate enough flames to scorch your eyebrows when you return - at least until Bill gets around to removing you from the mail list. I'd suggest just unsubscribing while you are gone, although Outlook also allows you to set rules about who gets a response (you could leave MI-l out). The only problem with Outlook rules is that they have to be very carefully designed and set up or they won't work correctly. RE: MI Printing using Mapinfo
Hi John One of the things you might try is using the "File | Save Window" command to save the layout window to an image file (jpg or bmp seem to work well). This file (especially the jpg) can be transferred to the mac and printed from any image manipulation software (Photoshop for instance). You will have to play with the image size output (you have a choice - in either inches or centimeters depending on locale) in order to get the right resolution. I think the default option is either 72 or 98 dpi. Usually anything 250dpi or higher prints just fine, but the files will be huge. I generally double or triple the suggested measurements to get a decent printable resolution. You might also have to edit the image a bit to make it look right - it will come out with a large white margin with a black line around it - pretty ugly. You can get rid of the border by changing/adding a key in the registry. The Mapinfo solution is below (I _still_ wonder why this isn't an option in a dialog somewhere). Feel free to drop me a note if you need more info / help. Answer: Except for ProServer, MapInfo products export the black border by default. To change the border display in MapInfo Professional, modify the registry entry. The key is: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MapInfo\MapInfo\Common\ExportBorder This is a DWORD; 0 indicates no border; non-zero indicates that a border should export. In the 16-bit version MapInfo, the key is in MAPINFO.INI; [MapInfo Common] section; ExportBorder=0; non-zero indicates that a border should export. -Original Message- From: JOHN CHEU [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, November 19, 1999 7:32 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: MI Printing using Mapinfo I recently working on a study in my country. RE: MI sizing map windows for easy viewing
Hi Jory There is actually a pretty simple trick to doing this: There are a number of steps but this works well: 1) Open both a Mapper and Layout window 2) In the layout window create a frame to contain the map. Size the frame to whatever you want. 3) Double-click the frame and uncheck the "Fill frame with contents" option. You now have a pretty ugly frame containing a map with the same size ratio as your Mapper. 5) Make sure the frame is still selected and that the layout window is positioned so that you can see one corner of the frame when you switch back to the map window. 6) Switch to the Mapper window and resize. You will see the area containing the map in the frame in the layout window resize as well. Continue until you have the size ratio matched up closely. 7) Go back to the layout window, double click the frame and check the "Fill frame with contents" option. You now have a mapper window and frame with roughly the same size ratio This not the most accurate system in the world, but it is quick and works quite well. The inaccuracy you will get is usually not enough to worry about. Regards, James -Original Message- From: Mapinfo User [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, November 18, 1999 10:04 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: MI sizing map windows for easy viewing Hello all. Confusing but: I would like the mapper window to reflect what is seen in its respective layout frame. Right now, the layout frame shows much more than the window in the mapper view. When I scroll around the mapper view it changes the layout frame view, so it becomes very tedious to add something to the mapper window and then go back to the layout and keep jumping back and forth. How do I adjust the mapper window so what i see in it is what is shown in the layout? Thanks.
