[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice Community starts 50,000 Euro challenge for setting-up its foundation

2011-02-16 Thread Florian Effenberger
LibreOffice Community starts 50,000 Euro challenge for setting-up its
foundation

German-based model provides best stability and safety for users,
adopters, developers and enterprises

Race for funds open until March 21st

The Internet, February 16th, 2011 - The community around LibreOffice,
the free office productivity suite, today announced its fifty-thousand
Euro challenge for setting-up The Document Foundation as a legal entity.
The race for funds is open until March 21st 2011, which marks the
beginning of Spring in the northern hemisphere. All users - especially
enterprises - are invited to donate to the capital stock of the future
foundation.

After thorough investigation, the Steering Committee came to the
conclusion that a foundation based in Germany would provide the best
stability, not only for our users, but also for adopters, developers and
enterprises. For achieving this stability, a capital stock of at least
50,000 Euros is considered best practice in Germany, says Florian
Effenberger, Steering Committee member of The Document Foundation. Now
that we have our first release of LibreOffice, which has been downloaded
and installed all around the world, the time has come to legally
establish the future home for our community.

All donations will be used for setting-up The Document Foundation, and
after the fifty thousand Euros has been collected for the capital stock,
donations over the top of that sum will be fed directly into the future
foundation's budget to cover operating costs. Should the race for funds
not succeed, The Document Foundation will use the donations to
incorporate itself in a different country that requires less capital
stock, such as the United Kingdom.

To achieve their ambitious goal of a Foundation in Germany in just five
weeks, the community has set-up a dedicated website with detailed
information at http://challenge.documentfoundation.org The site will
also give adopters, community members and corporate sponsors a voice,
and will have special features rolled out at the accomplishment of each
donation milestone.

We have seen wide support from many organizations, and the amount of
volunteer work that has been put into The Document Foundation is just
amazing. Without people donating their free time, knowledge and
creativity to what will be the future home of LibreOffice, we wouldn't
be where we are today. However, volunteer work alone can't fund the
necessary capital stock, which is why we have started a public race for
donations, especially targeting contributions from enterprises and
public administrations adopting LibreOffice, and those interested in an
independent, vital and growing ecosystem around free office productivity
software, Florian Effenberger adds.

Information about LibreOffice can be found at http://www.libreoffice.org
The home of The Document Foundation is at http://www.documentfoundation.org

About The Document Foundation
The Document Foundation has the mission of facilitating the evolution of
the OOo Community into a new, open, independent, and meritocratic
organization within the next few months. An independent Foundation is a
better reflection of the values of our contributors, users and
supporters, and will enable a more effective, efficient and transparent
community. TDF will protect past investments by building on the
achievements of the first decade, will encourage wide participation
within the community, and will co-ordinate activity across the community.

Well, these wallpapers are just tests rendered in a bigger resolution
[asked by Leif] and their textures have poor quality. Actually, the
resolution of textures (512px) is not enough to the 1024x768 format, so you
can see the aliasing effect in the center picture (look to green highlights
in the hills). Also maybe some text may be good too to keep the context of
these images. I'll try to do something better today and present to you. :)

Thanks a lot for the great artwork!

The one is short, but the longer one has more info in it.

But these articles are one of the first ones I have seen that
looks like some one else now believes that Oracle has dropped
the ball on their version. I like the fact that in such a short time,
while LibreOffice people were working on re-coding the core of
the suite to get rid of the legacy code that causes upgrade and
maintenance problems, they still found the time to produce a
better 3.3 version than OOo did. LibreOffice went to RC4, while
OOo went to RC10; so does it mean that LibreOffice has better
programmers, of is it due to their work to get rid of the legacy
code that gave problems to OOo's programmers?

I just got a bugzilla answer from Mozilla on this and it has been

Well, for sure we have the best programmers going around. The amount of
bug fixes is amazing. All you have to do is join the dev list and lurk
and you'll see that the amount of bug fixing traffic has actually
increased since the start of LibreOffice. I don't think that particular
list/section is ever at a standstill. I am not sure they even take time
to sleep! :-) Great dev work people!

As for the demise of OOo, the general undertone in the media (Tom and I
have been taking care of the LibreOffice in the Press wiki page[1]) has
been that Oracle is going to have its hands full trying to keep up to
the LibreOffice wave. I think at some point they, Oracle OpenOffice,
will have to re-adjust their goals. IMHO, if they decide to commit to a
closer ties with LibreOffice, they may end up in a clear 2nd place
standing and in a very precarious position. Adopting the LibreOffice
code may be its only alternative.

Well, for sure we have the best programmers going around. The amount of bug
fixes is amazing. All you have to do is join the dev list and lurk and you'll
see that the amount of bug fixing traffic has actually increased since the
start
of LibreOffice. I don't think that particular list/section is ever at a
standstill. I am not sure they even take time to sleep! :-) Great dev work
people!

As for the demise of OOo, the general undertone in the media (Tom and I have
been taking care of the LibreOffice in the Press wiki page[1]) has been that
Oracle is going to have its hands full trying to keep up to the LibreOffice
wave. I think at some point they, Oracle OpenOffice, will have to re-adjust
their goals. IMHO, if they decide to commit to a closer ties with LibreOffice,
they may end up in a clear 2nd place standing and in a very precarious
position.
Adopting the LibreOffice code may be its only alternative.

Cheers

Marc

Not sure. I think many of them are busy keeping their version of

Yes, definitely. Oracle builds its Unbreakable Linux offer on the back
of RedHat, but the Linux team based in the US is totally unrelated to
the OOo team based in Hamburg and developing OOo on Windows.

Actually, if they had a desktop version it would use LibreOffice, as
RedHat will be using LibreOffice in the desktop version Fedora.

the problem is keeping the standards or not.
this is a mission impossible being compatible with closed MS formats, as you

In this point, I suggest we have to show some toughness and we should show up a

Yeah, you're not wrong. The camera's perspective (50mm) makes the icons
look a bit different. But this impression is mainly because they are
placed in a circular arrangement, Base and Writer are rotated by 30
degrees and Calc and Draw by 10 degrees in camera direction. Just
Impress is set exactly front to camera. This Blender's screenshot may help:

By the way, the icons by themselves are a little bit fat in the
middle, how you can see in this initial test render:

Hi guys,

Sadly just now I found some incorrect vertexes in 3D meshes, mainly in
the document colored border. So this is the corrected version:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibO-2.png (probably
you'll need to force reloading)

I also made JPG versions because the PNG files are huge really (almost
1MB): Wallpaper 1

- Wallpaper 2

Thank all for the positive commentaries and support. :D

Hi Paulo:

I have uploaded the files to the wiki and have updated the Marketing
Wallpaper wiki page[1]. There are now the .png and .jpg copies posted
on this page.

Thank you for doing this.

Cheers

Marc

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: Great artwork

Yeah, it was deliberated. But I can easily change that in the Gimp
files. I just thought to emphasize the LibreOffice words making the
others white. But initially I was worried about the background be too
bright to do it. Thank you for your commentary! :)

There you find the correct color text versions (with our preferred
filenames too):

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibreOffice-1.png
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibreOffice-2.png

By the way, the Michael Zara photography worked by Drew is a wonderful
artwork! :D This blue light in opposition to its opposite color (brow)
in the background is just perfect.

Yeah Realistic, but graphically and for the Identity that's not the best way to
do it. The rest is still amazing :) I'm loving it ;)

Hi Marc!

Thank you so much for include my wallpapers in this page! Maybe we
should change the name of files to avoid the use of LibO (my fault, I'm
sorry). What do you think?

Hi Paulo:

I don't think there is anything wrong with the file names. We had just
discussed avoiding LibO when using Marketing materials going out to the
public. The LibO short name, in this case, makes sense as it would be
quite a bit longer if the full name were used. Therefore, I do not have
a problem with it. Unless anyone else complains, I do not see any reason
to change the file names.

Many thanks for the great work.

Cheers

Hi Paulo:

I now see that you have changed to LibreOffice on your next set. I will
change the names LibO to LibreOffice as you had suggested, just to keep
all of the file naming structure the same.

Hi Paulo:

Let's just leave these as they are. I realize that it would just
complicate things for nothing. I have added these last two wallpapers to
the wallpaper wiki page[1]

It's good to know and make sure. When I become a LibreOffice mail
listing member, I didn't know what was the right form (LibreOffice or
LibO) to use in each context.

By the way, is it correct or suggested to use Libre Office (with
separated words)?

~Paulo

Hi Paulo

The suite is called LibreOffice with no spaces.

Re: use of LibO. We had agreed a couple months ago that the use of LibO
as short form would not be encouraged as we wanted to get the
LibreOffice brand name known to people. This was also said in context of
marketing materials. I don't think that this would apply to file naming
convention as sometimes we need to abbreviate file names to make them fit.

As Italo says do not take this as an order, but IMO, I think that we
would want to make our official name known before advertising a short
form. Many people still have never heard of LibreOffice.

Just in case you are not aware, Italo Vignoli is our marketing lead. We
rely very much on his marketing expertise and wisdom.
