We did it for the release notes, and we can do it for the announcements (Press releases) too. Two thing must be said: there was no time for coordination since the press release had been accidentally made available before the planned date; and the press release is traditionally kept confidential before issuing it (while the Release notes are not). Still, I agree that translation volunteers must be given access to the Press Release so that they can translate it and issue it soon after the English one. What Joerg writes remains mostly correct: it is possible to resell unmodified copies of virtually all free software. But this site is not allowed to use our trademarks, which include the icons with gulls. Note that since this company is (obviously) totally unaffiliated with the OpenOffice project we have no idea of what they are selling: it could be OpenOffice, or OpenOffice with removed/added functionality, or OpenOffice plus some spyware/malware, or something unrelated to OpenOffice, or whatever. Re: unofficial?
Jörg Schmidt wrote: when I say the icons are _part of the software_, I mean the physical software. This is a contrast to the name, because the name is the _name_ of the software, _not part_ of the physical software. I'm not a lawyer, of course. But there is a difference between what the license allows to do with the code and what the trademark policy says. Or, to state it correctly: the Apache License http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html section 6 says that you cannot use trademarks as you wish and that you need explicit permission for certain uses. Trademarks, for OpenOffice, include the name and the gulls logo. You can find examples of the trademark policy here: http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/faq/#titlefeather ; so for example if someone writes a book about an Apache product he cannot include the Apache feather image in the cover. This is an extreme example; in general, one should ask for permission on a case-by-case basis. You can imagine that we will allow (and, even if not asked, tolerate) that someone uses our trademarks to support the project, while we will deny a request by someone who wants to sell for 99 EUR a thing named Apache OpenOffice Professional consisting in Apache OpenOffice with some malware added and wants to advertise it using the official images and make it look like as if it was a premium version produced by the OpenOffice project. We actively enforce trademarks in order to protect our users and the reputation of OpenOffice. Everybody used to be more or less happy with OpenOffice until late 2010. A group decided to fork OpenOffice (which is perfectly allowed by the license) back then and to start a separate product. I could maybe understand that there is a justification for having two products, but I've always believed that this does not imply having two communities. But if its causing volunteers pain then I would express that to the PMC/ mailing list. They don't know if you don't speak up. The PMC already knows. Some PMC members already collaborate (as individuals) to both projects. What I would like to see happening, and hasn't so far, is some form of official cooperation. For license reasons, the OpenOffice code can freely be reused (and it does get reused), so working on OpenOffice (code, QA, translations) automatically benefits all derived programs. But honestly I don't think there is a need for further discussion of this issue, besides what Louis wrote: the OpenOffice project should be better, much better, in communicating that innovation happens at Apache (or, at least, ALSO at Apache). The OpenOffice 4.0 release is an excellent opportunity for this, so let's try not to miss it. It is still an issue that at 33% (more or less the size of the website banner) Apache is barely readable. Could we circumvent the issue by using a specific pixel-perfect design, rather than a resize, for the site banner? I mean something with the same size of http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/OOo_Website_v2_copy.png that is very close to a resize of your bigger logo, but has some very fine tweaks, added to that version only, that make Apache more readable at that size. The updated logos (three of them) are on the wiki now: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Stage+2+Logo+Refinement As you can see there is quite a bit of convergence on a design occurring. This is just right for a product with an established brand. Good to see that the process has brought nice results so far. So what next? I'd like to propose some next steps. The plan is OK to me. A) Let's discuss the three designs on the mailing list for the next week. The discussion might lead to further refinement. They are all rather good, but I quite like Chris' design: the heavier font looks better than the (a bit too thin) one used by Samer and Kevin, and the gray color looks more modern than the black we used to have. Speaking of Chris' design... - I would keep the version number (4) only for the splash screen and for the about box, but not for the main logo (I doubt we want to use it on the website). - Apache should be given more prominence: font size is OK, but the font weight and color should match those of Office. I find Samer's Apache better than Chris' as for weight and color. Remember that we want to be able to scale the logo also quite small, like the current logo shown on that page. This is my main argument for preferring a refresh to a complete restart. I tend to prefer the orb in its non-flat version, but maybe that is just because I've always seen it this way and I quite like it as an element. I find a little bit confusing, in your last proposal, that it has two prominent emblems (the orb and a feather). Currently the orb is clearly the one and only emblem for OpenOffice. For the rest, it is a great proposal like others (including your other one). One of the problems i see with a lot of the proposals is the lack of thought given to typography. I think the process will allow us to progressively converge and fine-tune the proposals when needed.
