I agree with Joerg here. We did it for the release notes, and we can do
it for the announcements (Press releases) too.

Two thing must be said: there was no time for coordination since the
press release had been accidentally made available before the planned

issuing it (while the Release notes are not).

Still, I agree that translation volunteers must be given access to the

English one. We must make sure to do so starting with the next release.

I can't share details, but this has been under investigation for some

possible to resell unmodified copies of virtually all free software. But
this site is not allowed to use our trademarks, which include the icons

Note that since this company is (obviously) totally unaffiliated with

I'm not a lawyer, of course. But there is a difference between what the
license allows to do with the code and what the trademark policy says.
Or, to state it correctly: the Apache License
http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html section 6 says that you
cannot use trademarks as you wish and that you need explicit permission
for certain uses. Trademarks, for OpenOffice, include the name and the
gulls logo.

You can find examples of the trademark policy here:
http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/faq/#titlefeather ; so for
example if someone writes a book about an Apache product he cannot
include the Apache feather image in the cover. This is an extreme
example; in general, one should ask for permission on a case-by-case
basis. You can imagine that we will allow (and, even if not asked,
tolerate) that someone uses our trademarks to support the project, while
we will deny a request by someone who wants to sell for 99 EUR a thing
named Apache OpenOffice Professional consisting in Apache OpenOffice
with some malware added and wants to advertise it using the official
images and make it look like as if it was a premium version produced
by the OpenOffice project. We actively enforce trademarks in order to
protect our users and the reputation of OpenOffice.

Can you confirm that what you downloaded (while advertised with a

Even though it's not visible (legal and trademark issues are dealt with
in private) we do take actions against misuse of our trademarks when we

You can see some easy-to-read explanations at

and you should review the trademark guidelines if you are unsure (for

OpenOffice is not the group that forked. It continued the OpenOffice

Why both AOO and LO, which are open source, are required in this world? Can

Everybody used to be more or less happy with OpenOffice until late 2010.
A group decided to fork OpenOffice (which is perfectly allowed by the
license) back then and to start a separate product. I could maybe
understand that there is a justification for having two products, but
I've always believed that this does not imply having two communities.

But if its causing volunteers pain then I would express that to the PMC/
mailing list. They don't know if you don't speak up.

The PMC already knows. Some PMC members already collaborate (as
individuals) to both projects. What I would like to see happening, and
hasn't so far, is some form of official cooperation. For license
reasons, the OpenOffice code can freely be reused (and it does get
reused), so working on OpenOffice (code, QA, translations) automatically
benefits all derived programs.

But honestly I don't think there is a need for further discussion of
this issue, besides what Louis wrote: the OpenOffice project should be
better, much better, in communicating that innovation happens at Apache
(or, at least, ALSO at Apache). The OpenOffice 4.0 release is an
excellent opportunity for this, so let's try not to miss it.

I still quite like it, even though I would probably have preferred to
keep the lighter grey in Office (but if we move to personal
preferences, of course everyone has his own).

It is still an issue that at 33% (more or less the size of the website
banner) Apache is barely readable. Could we circumvent the issue by
using a specific pixel-perfect design, rather than a resize, for the
site banner? I mean something with the same size of
http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/OOo_Website_v2_copy.png that
is very close to a resize of your bigger logo, but has some very fine
tweaks, added to that version only, that make Apache more readable at
that size. So basically: a resize with a bit of post-processing so that
it looks great at that size too.

The plan is OK to me.

A) Let's discuss the three designs on the mailing list for the next

They are all rather good, but I quite like Chris' design: the heavier
font looks better than the (a bit too thin) one used by Samer and Kevin,
and the gray color looks more modern than the black we used to have.

Speaking of Chris' design...
- I would keep the version number (4) only for the splash screen and
for the about box, but not for the main logo (I doubt we want to use it
on the website).
- Apache should be given more prominence: font size is OK, but the
font weight and color should match those of Office. I find Samer's
Apache better than Chris' as for weight and color. Remember that we
want to be able to scale the logo also quite small, like the current
logo shown on that page.

Overall it has a flat look and yet still some depth to make it stand
out from the microsoft brand.

I tend to prefer the orb in its non-flat version, but maybe that is just
because I've always seen it this way and I quite like it as an element.
I find a little bit confusing, in your last proposal, that it has two
prominent emblems (the orb and a feather). Currently the orb is clearly
the one and only emblem for OpenOffice. For the rest, it is a great

One of the problems i see with a lot of the proposals is the lack of
thought given to typography.

I think the process will allow us to progressively converge and
fine-tune the proposals when needed. So if a proposal is promising but
would look better with the proper fonts/kerning then we can improve it

Comments/suggestions welcome.

is this why AOO extension and template services -

This is surely unrelated to Rob's blog post (they are on different
servers), the issue is being discussed on the dev list and the temporary
workaround is to use the two alternate addresses:

http://aoo-extensions.sourceforge.net
http://aoo-templates.sourceforge.net
which work normally.

What else has widespread interest?

I would use the normal logo except for the end-of-year holidays and for
exceptional cases where we want to celebrate something where the
OpenOffice community has an active, prominent role.

So I would understand that we use a special variant of the logo again
for the language day on February 21 (only if OpenOffice does something
to celebrate it: engaging the L10N community, calling for translation
volunteers...) and for the Document Freedom Day on March 27 (since
OpenOffice is one of the big players here, and should celebrate as
such). ApacheCon could be another occasion.

Re: info: Additional Licensing requirements if any for use of Open Office for Professional Work in Companies

Greetings from Tata Motors! We are happy to note your foundation's
work in developing open office tools for the world. We have been
using your tools for my academic personal activities from some time

professional work in our company.

Thanks for your appreciation! I'm removing the security list from the
recipients, since it is a confidential channel related to security
incidents only.

We would hence like to know the answers to the following question to
acess the feasibility

Sure. Just remember that my statements here, as virtually all
communication on our mailing lists, do not constitute legal advice or
official answers. For that, you should read, e.g., the full license text
at http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html or the source code.

1. What are the additional licensing, permissions requirements to be
factored if any

None (of course, I recommend that you read the license).

2. Can the employees use Open Office tools freely to
perform their commercial work

Yes, definitely. The Apache License is permissive and business-friendly,
and it gives maximum freedom to the user.

3. Is there any risk of office data
leaking via the internet while using the Open tools

No. Services that connect to the Internet (such as the update
notification service) do not disclose personal private data or documents
data.

 4. Are there any
organizations where open office is ready used for professional work

Yes, so many that we actually have trouble in keeping the list
up-to-date... Anyway you can find an outdated list at

http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Major_OpenOffice.org_Deployments

5. Are there any annual maintenance or up-gradation services which
can be offered

Sure, but not from this project directly. We do maintain a list of
consultants at http://www.openoffice.org/bizdev/consultants.html but for
corporate-grade support you might also be contacted by companies that
employ full-time OpenOffice developers. Employees from these companies
already read our mailing lists.

You can also support the project by sponsoring development, or
contributing developers or translators or other resources for QA or
marketing... Feel free to write again (the dev list is enough) if you
would like to know more about this.

Regards,
  Andrea.

Most years around Xmass we theme the site with a Season graphic or design,
wonder if we would do somerhing for this year.

Why not? Feel free to propose enhancements. We have three suitable DIVs
in the HTML code, bannerleft, bannerright and bannercenter where a
small decoration could be placed. This would then be automatically
applied to all pages.

When you have a mockup, please send it to the main mailing list
(ooo-dev) too, since it will impact the whole website and everybody
should be aware of it.

Welcome, John, and make sure you are subscribed to the marketing mailing
list, otherwise you will miss all discussions and calls for actions!

You have two options:

1) Receive all individual messages sent to the list: send an empty
message to

marketing-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org
and respond to the confirmation request you will receive

2) Receive a daily digest with all messages from the day collected in a
single message: send an empty message to

marketing-digest-subscr...@openoffice.apache.org
and respond to the confirmation request you will receive
