Failure to change the coolant (and to use the correct stuff) will
result in premature radiator failure (often holing) and can even ruin
the head on cast iron block engines. Probably less trouble on aluminum

Decided to go on and order new mounts and hope I could get some advice
on getting the hole to line up.

The only 'secret' I know about is to leave _all_ bolts loose until
they _all_ are started. Then tighten them down. Makes wiggling
the engine much easier. In drastic cases you might even need to
loosen the transmission mount, and maybe even the driveline
collar nut. That floats the whole thing.

Nope, you only tested the antifreeze / water mix.

Antifreeze also includes corrosion inhibitors that get used up over time.
Most experts will tell you that you need to replace your coolant every 2
years to maintain enough corrosion inhibitors in the system.

The first to go will be the aluminum parts. So, how long has the
antifreeze

been in the system? If you don't know then I guarantee it's been too long.

Any FLAPS book on automotive AC will tell you enough.

If you need to add some, and you only do if you think you've lost
any, you can just pour it into an open hose.

I absolutely don't think anybody should touch their AC system

Do I need to clean system or can I just charge the system?

Did it get dirty? How long was it open to the atmosphere?
You'll need a new receiver/drier, as its desiccant has probably
saturated by now. But I don't know that any 'cleaning' will
be necessary. It depends. Usually not.

2006-03-14 Thread Robert Tara Ludwick
For ac specific things the forum at www.aircondition.com is mighty
handy, as well as the free AC advisor program that you can download
from their site that you can use to calculate system pressure at a given
ambient temp.

Don't add the full system amount of oil unless you empty all the oil
out of the system , or youll have too much in there.
If the hose was in a low spot, you may need a littl, if it was high,
shouldn't need any. ( if you put too much oil in, your system will have
to run a higher pressure than normal to cool ) If adding for the heck of
it, don't put more than an oz in it.If you want to know fr sure, dump
out the compressor and the drier and blow out the condensor and
evapurator, and then add teh factory oil amount ( If you want, you
could flush it at this time )
Get a new drier.( add the apropriate oil for the drier, there should be
a spec around somewhere for how much oil settles in each componant , or
as said, if you flush the system, you can add the full amount)

Might not be a bad idea to replace all the orings while you're at it.
Then vacuum out the system, Close the gauges ant turn off vac pump, and
watch. it should hold vacuum for 15 minuits, I like to see them hold for
1/2 hour or longer.
Then vac for an hour or so and fill it up. ( use the ac advisor program
to get the appropriate high side reading )

Put on a jacket and drive :-)

Hi Walt,

Join the club... the 5-qt jug of 5W-40 has been AWOL for a couple of
months now. Rumor is that it may re-appear in another few months but
I'm not holding my breath. About the 0W-40 stuff, I'm personally NOT a
fan of it... heard some anecdotes that were enough to scare me away
from using it, period.

You should be able to find 5W-40 in the quart bottles at your FLAPS.
There's also a new 10W-40 'Extended Performance' variant that should
be pretty good, but is probably priced higher. Ditto for the 15W-50
'EP'.

My local Wal-Marts have only xW-30 and thinner Mobil-1 weights...
nothing xW-40 or xW-50 at all.

Re: [MBZ] '78 450 SLC fuel pump

2006-03-14 Thread OK Don
Yup - I thought I was smart - hooked up the battery, connected the
wires that are normally connected at the starter, jumpered what I
thought was the safety shutoff on the intake manifold, and got
nothing.

So I ran wires and a switch directly fromthe battery to the fuel pump,
but left the wiring harness attached. All I got was a buzzing from
somewhere far forward in the car. Lastly I disconnected the positive
wire from the fuel pump, applying 12v. directly to it, and got the
click.

Hopefully I'll get home early eniugh tomorrow evening to try reversing
the polarity while aplying the hammer ---

Depending on how you are connecting the pump, it may or may not run. If
you are using the original circuitry, there may be a feedback shutoff
that keeps the pump from running if certain conditions (fuel pressure,
engine speed, etc.) are not met. I had this problem on a Ford (Forgive
 me) Powerstroke.

I CONFESS!! It was me who posted the picture of some guy 'flipping a
cow...' in lieu of pictures of my cars. Since I hadn't yet taken any nice
flattering photos of my MBenz's to post I thought I would post a photo
that was at least representative of the area where I live. And since I
still have not taken photographs to post of my MBenz's because it's
winter here and they stay in the garage until I feel inclined to drive
them, I guess the cow picture will have to do for now (or forever
possibly unless you want to remove it). Somebody guessed right in
thinking it was a branding party, although 'party' is probably not the
most proper terminology.

I suppose I must offer an apology to those who may feel that the picture
is representing animal mistreatment, but in Montana beef is raised for
export to YOUR local grocers' shelves and branding for
ownership/identification purposes is only one of the necessary processes
that the animal must go through in the whole program from it's birth to
your dinner table (no, your steak does not grow in the store's freezer

Re: [MBZ] Two way antenna want 3 way 1233 300 TD

2006-03-14 Thread David Brodbeck

Potter, Tom E wrote:

OK. I have been waiting and have not seen it yet. I know some of you
guys are radio nuts. So please explain how the length of the antenna is
related to the frequency of the radio signals.

Radio waves have a length, just like waves in water. The wavelength is
inversely related to the frequency, and the length of one wave can be
found by dividing the speed of light by the frequency in Hertz. (This
is the wavelength in free space. Signals travel slower through other
materials, so an actual antenna will actually be somewhat shorter than
the number you come up with this way.) Antennas function best at
particular lengths, like 1/2 wave or one full wave.

The wire antennas that come with most FM stereos are an example of a
1/2-wave dipole antenna, which is the most basic form of antenna. The
antenna on your car is probably a 1/4-wave antenna on the FM band; the
missing half is provided by the body of the car. Some older GM cars
actually had a 1/2-wave dipole made of fine wire embedded in the
windshield. One disadvantage of this approach was that, while a
1/4-wave antenna receives equally well in all directions, a 1/2-wave
dipole has nulls off its ends where reception is weaker, causing
fading when those cars turned corners.

For a good introduction to basic antenna theory, look for a copy of the
ARRL Amateur Radio Handbook at your local library. Their copy will
probably be old, but little has changed in this field since the 1930s.

The tuning knob controls
a variable capacitor that changes the perceived length of the antenna.

Not quite. The tuning knob controls a tuned circuit in the radio that
selects one particular frequency. In a modern, properly designed radio,
this isn't affected by the antenna. Some radios have a small
screwdriver-adjustable trimmer capacitor that's used to tune the
antenna/cable/radio system for the best reception, however.

Where I live, (Pennsylvania) I pay a 13 cent premium tax (over gasoline)
to buy diesel. About half of that premium goes to the Feds and half to
PA. Diesel contains MORE energy than gasoline and with refining costs
now representing a much smaller percentage of the total cost of fuel
today (with oil at $60/barrel vs when oil was less than $20/barrel) the
value of a gallon of diesel is worth MORE than a gallon of gasoline and
the price reflects it.

Re: [MBZ] Uh Oh!

2006-03-14 Thread michael smith
The car is a 78 W116 280SE made for the California market and has stayed here
all her life in San Diego. Immediately after installing the springs the front
bumper of the car was 5 lower than the rear bumper...and she had some unusual
handling to boot. So here is the information I have at hand...from Adsitco
front coil springs before installation measure 18, from another source rear
springs uninstalled measure 15...so here is my suspicion...a 5 drop is a huge
difference (I had lift spacers installed on the front since the new Bilsteins
were grunting from the compression when I went over big dips in the road) and
it almost works out to the measurement difference in the height of the
springs...assuming that the car was never perfectly the same height front to
back using the bumper as a center for measurement losing 3 at the front and
gaining 3 at the rear would explain the huge lowering effect on the front end.

I saw both sets of coils before installation (I had the rears done first,
then a couple of weeks later the fronts) and they were not dramatically
different in circumference, the only difference really being the height and
number of turns.

So I guess my next question would be would somebody be kind enough to count
the number of turns on their W116 body Mercedes and advise me so I can compare?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike in partly Sunny San Diego (but still cold)

ps-Marshall I will try to find any stamping on the springs tomorrow...

Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi Michael,

A quick peek at the EPC shows that there is really only one part
number for springs for your car. It would help if you specified which
 chassis... there was a 280SE W108, W111, and W116 (and maybe more).
The free length of the spring as measured when not installed will NOT
be the same as the length measured when the spring is installed on the
car. So, you can't really compare without removing the spring. What
you can do is look at the bottom coil, there should be a part number
stamped into the spring itself. We can check that against the EPC and
determine if you have the correct springs installed in the car. I'm
pretty sure the front rear springs would not be interchangeable,
unless they are the same diameter, which would be unusual.

Replacing springs in an older Mercedes is often an exercise in
frustration. If you go to the TDM for your car you will find pages of
listing for springs that were available when the car was manufactured.
The proper spring depended upon the particular accessories were included
on your car. Even after all of that, there were at least two different
spring (color coded) for each configuration that require different pads
to properly set height.

As time since production of the car passes, the number of different
springs actually available for replacement dwindles and thus getting
precisely the original spring height may be impossible and setting the
height becomes an art and NOT a science. It's matter of trying different
pads with the springs you have and making a LOT of measurements. Trying
to do it by eye is hopeless. I have dozens of post from people that have
tried (at dealers, independents and on their own) and the number that
have achieved what they set out to do I can count on the fingers of one
hand with a few fingers left over.

It's not hard to find midsize gasoline cars that get 22 mpg or better.

If you are looking for something completely toasterlike, a coworker
bought a new camry with a four cylinder. Window sticker claims 34 mpg, if
you believe it. Somewhat impressive for the size of the car, since generally
that type of highway mileage in that size of car is reserved for diesels
or hybrids (which his camry is neither). Gasoline engines are requiring
less and less maintenance as the technology progresses.

More impressive is that my 94 crown victoria got 22 mpg off 87 octane before
it started using oil. At 220k (and about half of that put on by a sheriff's
office), I cut it a lot of slack. Still gets 20 mpg on the road. The new ones
supposedly get 24-25 mpg without much effort.

This is not to say that similar increases in technologies haven't been made
in diesel cars as well. From just a mileage and cost of maintenance after
the initial outlay of cash perspective, a 25 year old diesel is a hard sell
against a new gasser unless you abhor driving pedestrian vehicles and prefer
working on your own car rather than drinking cappuchinos in the dealer lobby.

IIRC, (I haven't seen it since last year) some guy dressed like a cowboy
had roped, or was roping, a brown calf (Herford?) thst was down on the ground.
I just assumed it was rodeo competition, but now that I think about it, the
pic was on grass, not a dirt arena.

As for PETA, there was recently a demonstration which included a young woman
wearing nothing but panties and a crude meat cutting diagram drawn on her
body, holding a pro-vegetarian sign over her breasts. It worked to a certain
extent, it was the first PETA activity that got a full color picture of their
protest sign in the local paper.

[MBZ] engine swap 83 617 to 80

2006-03-14 Thread Bob DuPuy
Without going into the gorey details I have a hole in the block of my
nice new to me 1980 300SD. It just so haapens I still have the engine
and tranny from my 83 300SD. The older tranny only has 150,000 mi
while the 83 has over 300 but was shifting fine. Can I mate the 83
engine to the 80 transmission, or is there a crankshaft pilot problem?

[MBZ] gasser 1972 220 neutral safety switch location

2006-03-14 Thread kevin kraly

Hello listers.

The guy with the 1972 220 has gotten a key for it, so I'll be looking at it
on Wednesday. When I went to look at it last weekend, he told me that it
didn't start reliably and that it needed a starter solenoid. I thought that
this would have been part of the starter replacement? However, the more I
think about it, the possibility of a faulty NSS seems more and more sure to
me. Is this something that is as straight forward as it was with my 78 300D
neutral safety switch? If this is the problem, I could be into a running
car for around $300 which would be great! It could sure used new tires, but
that isn't anything out of the ordinary.

No problem mating a pre-85 tranny to a pre-85 engine. There would be
certain issues with using the 126 tranny in the 116, such as speedo
drive and possibly the first gear start and kickdown systems, but
don't worry about that stuff if you are keeping the 116 tranny in the 116.
I'd pull both engines, sit them side by side, and swap over any parts
(manifolds, a/c compressor, whatever) that aren't identical before putting
the 617.951 in the 116 in place of the 617.950.

Thanks for the note. Wish I could figure out where the coolant is going -
perhaps the heater core has a small leak, as I do smell antifreeze for a moment

pressurized from that, though. It is a small PITA because periodically the temp

Noticed a busted ac hose on my 1979 240D. System is R12. Got my 609
certification. I assume with a broken line all freon is out.

Oh yeah!

Does anyone have a link or a procedure for charging they system with
R-12.

Any FLAPS book on automotive AC will tell you enough.

I assume I have to add mineral oil 4 oz? (how do you get that in).

If you need to add some, and you only do if you think you've lost
any, you can just pour it into an open hose.

I can get the R-12 anything else I should know special equipment.

I absolutely don't think anybody should touch their AC system
unless they have a set of service gauges and a vacuum pump suitable
for drying.

Do I need to clean system or can I just charge the system?

Did it get dirty? How long was it open to the atmosphere?
You'll need a new receiver/drier, as its desiccant has probably
saturated by now. But I don't know that any 'cleaning' will
be necessary. It depends. Usually not.

What is the best way, will the cans do it or do I need something else.

Cans are fine. Just do it right. See book!

Any sea stories or help/link would be appreciated

My diesels are running but the dishwasher is disabled. It's a

Barbie doll or something blocking it but everything looks clear. Any
last minute ideas before we visit the appliance store?

Can you hear water being pumped with vigor? Our old Whirlpool (?) had
a rubber donut atop the arm that swells under pressure to seal against
the tube that points up to the upper arm. That donut was torn,
resulting

in low water pressure and most of it going noplace useful. An easy
screw-off/screw-on replacement of a readily available part.
Your mileage almost certainly will vary!

Hi Christopher,
I had a problem with Acrobat after installing their recent update (ver
7.07 IIRC) and I had to uninstall Acrobat and then reinstall it to get
things working properly again.

Drove me crazy trying to understand why I was unable to open pdf files
by using a link - but I was able to open Acrobat and use the file open
command - if you can open Acrobat files using File/Open but not when trying
to follow a link - even within the MB manual - you might try this.

Good luck -

Doesn't do thermostats any good either. I can tell you from experience on an

got it all flushed out. It takes ALOT of flushing to get all that crud out.

Unless the taxation changes or people change their driving habits. I think that
we will see a gentle improvement in fleet economy as the gigunda SUVs fall from
favor a bit but I don't see that happening overnight. I do think that people

Anyway, are you buying a diesel Mercedes just for the fuel economy? I'm sure
not, well not entirely anyway. I genuinely like driving these older Mercedes

I drive about 450 miles a week so the diesel fits my needs.

With diesel now costing around 30% more than regular unleaded, I doubt

First, why did you replace the springs in the first place. Next, why
didnt you get them from Rusty?

michael smith wrote:

The car is a 78 W116 280SE made for the California market and has stayed here
all her life in San Diego. Immediately after installing the springs the
front bumper of the car was 5 lower than the rear bumper...and she had some
unusual handling to boot. So here is the information I have at hand...from
Adsitco front coil springs before installation measure 18, from another
source rear springs uninstalled measure 15...so here is my suspicion...a 5
drop is a huge difference (I had lift spacers installed on the front since
the new Bilsteins were grunting from the compression when I went over big
dips in the road) and it almost works out to the measurement difference in
the height of the springs...assuming that the car was never perfectly the
same height front to back using the bumper as a center for measurement losing
3 at the front and gaining 3 at the rear would explain the huge lowering
 effect on the front end.

I saw both sets of coils before installation (I had the rears done first,
then a couple of weeks later the fronts) and they were not dramatically
different in circumference, the only difference really being the height and
 number of turns.

So I guess my next question would be would somebody be kind enough to count
the number of turns on their W116 body Mercedes and advise me so I can
 compare?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ps-Marshall I will try to find any stamping on the springs tomorrow...

Mark,

Yes, I still have some ALDA shaft seals. Listers pay my cost, $6.00 each,
cash, check, MO, and send me a stamped, self addressed envelope. You can
just about install these little buggers with your thumb. the back side of
a small socket works well to finish seating the seal. I have never had to
replace the large O-ring, as Dave has mentioned, a light coating of
silicone RTV or Hylomar will seal the old one just fine.

I have one ALDA which has been pressure tested cleaned, and resealed which
I will sell for $45 plus $3.85 priority mail. These carry the same part
number from the earliest turbo diesels (78 in the US) through at least 87.
I will remove the seal or leave it intact at the buyer's wish. A set of 3
shims is included.

Re: [MBZ] FW: Today's Diesel Prices

2006-03-14 Thread Tom Hargrave
Around here, I see people rushing out to purchase more efficient vehicles.
They trade in their older gas hogs in for hybrid econo boxes, resulting
in better gas mileage, lower fuel cost, higher payments and a HIGHER OVERALL
MONTHLY COST. One family member and several friends have already fallen into
this trap.

I've already noticed that the price of older vans have crashed, probably as
a fallout of higher fuel prices, and if you value shop you can find an
excellent early 90's custom van for well under $3,000.00. Many of these have
few miles because the owners used them for family outings and mileage really
isn't that bad - in the high teens. That's not bad for a full size custom
fun vehicle that you can also use to haul Mercedes parts (necessary
Mercedes content) home from the local junk yard.

Yup - it's probably not as old as the Radarange, but the Sears
microwave we received as a wedding present in 1975 is still in daily
use. The kid's friends have never seen a microwave without a dozen
buttons on the front!

Ours, from 76 [house built] I believe, has a dozen buttons. It
has the glass touch panel for the timer. That thing is built
really really stoutly, and is very serviceable. I've had the
electrolytic power supply filter caps go bad, and bad solder
joints. Sound familiar?

I've laid in a spare oven for parts. St. Vinnie's, $2!
Everything but the special glass tray, but probably broken
in some way. (I've never even looked at it.)

The refrigerator magnet we got from them with a part order says,

From earlier enquiries it looks like I'm missing a piece of
the throttle linkage, a weirdly-bent strap of metal into
which the idle knob link attaches. It's a strap of metal
with one end as if it were bent around a stick and a long
tail left on one side, and it's carefully shaped to fit
within the butterfly-shaped hole in STOP lever. The curved
section on one side of the lever, the tail sticking through.
There's a hole in the tail (I imagine) for the idle cable to
fit through, with a clamping nut on the back. Not something
that one could fabricate easily at home, not and have it work
as intended. (Flex so that the STOP lever can still function.)
Anybody got an extra one?

I've attached a partial photograph of one, it ought to
end up on the list server.

Re: [MBZ] Frappr UPDATE!

2006-03-14 Thread Robert M Doran
Cow tipping...very simple...Works like a charm.

This is fine in theory, but has anyone explained the procedure to the
cows? Since my father was a veterinarian (primarily large-animal, as they
say in the trade) who always took advantage of all the free help he could
get, I grew up in close proximity to cows, horses, sheep (don't even go
there) and most any other types of animals you could name, domestic and
otherwise. I recall most of the cows anyway, having a generally
suspicious nature about me or any other human being, especially after
undergoing pregnancy testing(ask me and I'll tell you), and can't
remember too many that would let me get close enough to set them up for
such an undertaking. I did have a small herd of my own--80 animals being
considered at the 'hobby' level in Montana--and even though they were
good natured animals for the most part, I would needed to have had a very
good reason to push on them to see if I could tip them over. It's fun to
think about, anyway--something like sticking your finger in a fan to see
if it hurts.

At any rate, possible random cow tipping seems like a very good reason to
exercise my right to consume large quantities of Jack Daniels, and the
next time I come home with a snootful I'll just tell my wife I've been
out looking for a cow to tip. In the unlikely event that she doesn't
believe that, it's pretty easy to imagine where I'll spend the rest of
the night anyway--out in the barn sleeping with the cows!

Interesting that you mentioned Zen-like. I was thinking this afternoon
that tiredness and working with a light was not helping and I needed to put
a little more Zen (what ever that is) into it when I start over.

I learned most of what I know about auto repairs the hard way, at some point
I discovered what you all know -mental attitude made a huge difference.

My outdoor, in the snow, story is replacing the differential in a 49 Ford in
a foot of snow. I think someone bet me that I could not do it in less than
a certain amount of time. I spent more time under that car than I did
driving it. Would love to have it back though.

With diesel now costing around 30% more than regular unleaded, I doubt

It's not hard to find midsize gasoline cars that get 22 mpg or better.

Your talking about diesel engines designed 30+ years ago using 40-50

Diesel still makes a lot of sense when a midsized car get 35-40 mpg and

I wired mine into the house system, but we only have a wireless base and a
fax. Not sure how many extensions it will support. Every once in a while you
get a crappy connection and redialing fixes it. They have been down once in
the last year when I wanted to make a call. I like being able to take the
little box on vacation and use a hotspot to catch up on phone calls while
overseas (use your laptop and Internet Connection Sharing). Some countries
block the ports, but you can turn down the bandwidth and VPN in to get
around that. If you plug the box in series, it gives data priority to voice
calls. If you put it inside your firewall, you may need to do that manually.

Hope this helps.

The tool in question is tapered and round. Long tapered punches
would work equally as well. If the cooler lines are leaking its a
good time. The filter housing job is only easier if you're taking the
cooler lines off to change them, otherwise it makes no difference.

As was mentioned before fuel economy is only part of the equation and in many
cases a small part of that. My $1500 240D that I had at times to the Indy every
month still came out pretty good because of its low initial cost. The guy that
bought it from me has a Jetta and we just started running the numbers and
realized he'd have to drive it over 100,000 miles with almost no repairs to
come close to the cost per mile the 240D had given me...
A franken car can come in really good on the economy scale if you can do some
of the work yourself and aren't particularly choosy about looks.

No, not really. I needed a car, and this one was cheap and seemed
pretty easy to work on. I was also hoping for *some* fuel savings, but
this was back when diesel was running about the same price as midgrade.
I'd be happy with a fuel cost per mile that was even *equal* to a
gasoline car, now. I like diesels, but paying a cost per mile penalty
to drive one makes little sense to me. My job requires me to put a lot
of miles on the car and I'm reimbursed by the mile, so this hits me
directly in the pocketbook.

I'm not ready to get rid of the car yet, certainly. It's rusty enough
that its resale value out here in the land of rust-free classics is
pretty much zero, so my plan is to drive it into the ground.

I'd love to, but the payments scare me off. ;)
Diesel still makes a lot of sense when a midsized car get 35-40 mpg and
a small car 50 mpg!

Well...yes and no. Sure, you can get a midsize diesel that gets 35 mpg,
but with diesel costing 30% more, you might as well get a midsize
gasoline car that gets 25. You'll pay the same at the pump, and the
initial purchase price will be lower for the gasser.

The only reason to buy a diesel now is because they have a certain
cachet, especially when run on biodiesel. It's essentially the same
reason people buy hybrids.

The maintenance of a diesel should cost about half that of a gasoline
car and providing you don't let it die if old age (drive it less than
10-15kmi/year), most diesels will deliver twice the mileage before
really major engine repairs should be required. Diesels become much less
desirable when yearly mileage isn't 20-25kmi/yr or greater.

Very few of the OM61x engines that are retired each year actually wear
out. Many have succumbed to poor maintenance or they break and the owner
chooses not to fix them. Many more are retired when the body or drive
train deteriorate and the cost of repair exceeds the value of the vehicle.

The present nearly 30% premium of diesel over gasoline won't endure
(unless some idiot decides to raise the tax on diesel even higher) as
the demand for fuel oil declines with the approach of spring and the
demand for gasoline increases as the vacation season arrives. They'll be
about equal then.

Re: [MBZ] motor mounts 82 300TDt

2006-03-14 Thread R A Bennell
It is a big home made unit that my father built in the late 70's ( I
think ). Dad died in '83 so it was prior to that. It consists of a big
hydraulic cylinder mounted on an I-beam etc. The hydraulic pump is powered
by an 8HP BS via a sprocket and chain setup. No safety features on this one
either which is one reason why we have not tried to sell it (since we really
don't have much use for it now). I could put a guard around the chain setup
so that silly people wouldn't remove their limbs I guess. Need to replace
the hydraulic oil tank as well since I managed to inadvertantly drop a tree
on it.It still works but has a rather pronounced dent. Another story for
another time.

Chains and sprockets? Must be an antique. A guy in town has a
Lickity-Splitter that split mechanically using inertia. It had all
kinds of weird linkages and a spinning flywheel that the maul would
make momentary contact with. It slammed its way through the wood. It
had almost no safety features.
BTW I just split about a cord with my Wife and our hydraulic
splitter. Getting ready for next heating season early.
