Pick-up day! I assembled my tool kit and a tow strap, and I made
arrangements to fetch my neighbor along for a lunchtime run to Post
Falls. I'm also bringing my electrical troubleshooting manual, I may
try to get the fuel pump running. I won't do this in front of the
seller, though, that's just rude. (In case of success.) I'll bring
my electric vacuum pump too, I may be able to rig it to run the power
brakes even if we can't get the car started. (It's a converted door
lock pump from an early 126.)

...And the noontime pickup was fairly uneventful. I got the electric
vacuum pump hooked up and it worked well, according to my test pilot.
I used a spare main vacuum line from some diesel (115?) that had a
check valve and an accessory tap on it, I just corked the end that
normally goes to the vacuum pump and hooked it to the booster and fed
the pump to the tap. (Pilot also reports that the CD player works
nicely, and that the PO forgot to remove a disc from the player.) We
stopped a few blocks away and I tried bypassing the fuel pump relay,
but it was not the problem. It is apparently the (expensive!) pump
itself, further diagnosis will probably confirm this.

The tow car (Chicken Wagon) was unable to drag the dead weight up the
graveled hill near the house, I had to detach and quickly go get the
4wd Chevy pickup. But otherwise the trip, though slow and on back
roads, was uneventful: just the way I like them!

When I got home after work I put the car on a charger to replenish the
battery from its episode with the lights and the vacuum pump. Let the
games begin!

Not without a latching relay. He wants a power switch

Re: [MBZ] self service

2007-08-01 Thread LarryT
Exactly!

I do all my own work if at all possible. Some things I don;t do because
of time or tools needed but I find that when I let a professional do the
work it *invariably* comes back with something not done or not properly
done. I''m not talking about 1 or 2 shops, as I try to find the best people
for the job - and nearly 100% of the time things are not done properly.

Also, when I do work, if I see something else needing attention I fix
it - a shop never does this nor do they ask if I want it done. Also, most
shops seem to have pet practices they are always pushing - such as fuel
injection cleaning service which is am chemical service - not RR of the
parts. Transmission back flushes also seem to be big around here. And
often a shop will suggest parts replacement based on miles driven rather
than a visual diagnosis - for instance,, take a vehicle with 125k and the
shop will say it;s time for plugs, wires (have you priced SP wire sets
lately?) , distr cap, filters, etc - even if they have not confirmed the
parts are bad.

Some shops I have given Rustys address phone # but they typlcally
stick to the local FLAPS for parts they do not stock.

Sorry about the rant, IMHO I seldom get my moneys worth.

[MBZ] Mobil 1 wierd...

2007-08-01 Thread Curt Raymond
Stopped at Walmart to get oil for the car. Noticed they had Mobil 1 15w50, note
thats not 15w50 EP just regular 15w50. Good price too, $20/5qt.
Wait, this stuff is SL/CF... They also had some 5w40, thats CI,CI-4. Should
be better oil. Well its more expensive anyway, $23/gal.
I bought all the 5w40 they had (2 gallons). I didn't really want to use it, I'm
concerned it'll leak out worse than the 15w50 but...

So today I check Mobil's website and darned if they don't say 15w50 is SM/CF. I
don't have a bottle here at my desk but I have some in the garage at home. I'll
have to check that out.

Overall I wish they'd quit tinkering...

[MBZ] Who wants a 300TD cheap?

2007-08-01 Thread slozukimc
Hey All,
I have decided to sell my 83 300TD. I never have time to mess with it
to even see what is the matter with the transmission. The engine runs
great, starts right up no problem.

The fuel tank is rusty and is plugging the primary fuel filter often so
that needs taken care of and the tranny does nothing. I think it is
either the front pump or the ears on the converter gone bad. I fould a
new input seal for the tranny in the car so I think maybe someone didn't
get the TC lined up right when they put it back in.

The hydro rear suspension works fine and the car drives well. Oh, it
needs an exhaust too, sounds pretty cool a bit loud though...LOL

Mileage is right around 300K, I'll go look to be exact in a while.

I'll take the first $1500 for it.

Thanks, Mike

I tend to agree Jim.I had an old Chebbie truck that was bad about
locking between gears if you shifted it too fast...The column shift
bushings were loose. Had to get under it many times a pry it out of gear
in the middle of traffic..

Mike

Sadly, I only have one spare. (If I had two dead rats
I'd give you one...) To really twist the knife, though,
it was sitting in the bed of a pickup truck next to
its source in the U-Pull one day. They'd been after
the clutch or something... I figured that it wasn't
going to get any easier than that to procure the spare
I was interested in. (For the Frankenheap.) I didn't
even have to stoop to pick it up.

Honestly I find it hard to believe that your tranny
is actually dead. Locked up, sure. But I'd think
you could grab a wrench and dive into it and probably
 get it loose again.

[MBZ] u-pull discovery

2007-08-01 Thread Allan Streib
Visited a u-pull yard (first time at that sort of place) that
specializes in imports. It is about about a 30 minute drive from my
house. Was not even aware that it existed, until I was referred there
by our local salvage yard.

Found a left-hand rear jump seat for my Nissan Frontier that I have
been scouring the internet trying to find. Noted that they had lots
of late model Benz wrecks, along with Volkswagens, Volvos, BMWs, and
the lots of Japanese stuff. Didn't see much in the way of older W123s
etc. but that was not really why I was there.

Quick question -- do you normally negotiate prices at a place like
this? I did not today, as I thought the price was reasonably fair and
I was just happy to find what I was looking for -- but as a general
practice, is it worth counter-offering at places like this?

Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL

2007-08-01 Thread Jim Cathey
I restored the vacuum system to normality from yesterday's
jury-rigging. I jacked up the rear of the car and removed the plastic
shield for the fuel pump assembly. The rubber boots for the
electrical connections are bad, but the connections were still good.
I checked, and power was not getting back to there, even with the fuel
pump relay bypassed. I disconnected the cable and clipped the battery
charger directly onto the fuel pump. It ran. With it running I tried
the key. The car started instantly. When I turned off the fuel pump
the car died instantly. Looks like it could be a wiring problem.
That's much better than a bad fuel pump, though it could be a bit
labor-intensive.

I've had similar problems to Larry since I quit wrenching over 15 years ago.
Most memorable was the time I drove an hour and a half to drop off a pair
of control arms that needed new bushings and another hour and a half to pick
them up, when I could have gotten out the grinder and arbor press and done
them myself in 30 minutes. The control arms were U shaped stampings, and
the FSM called for special tools (spacers) to put in the U to keep it from
collapsing in the press. When I picked the arms up, they were squished.
The second best mechanic in the shop had ground off the welds and punched
the old bushings out on their arbor press without using internal spacers.
Nobody in the suspension shop (I used to work across the street from these
guys and trusted them) would admit to ever hearing of the tools which I
assumed they would have/use.

I have a couple more examples, all three were cases in which I was willing
to pay a specialist to do something I feared messing up, and got worse
results than I could imagine doing myself with inadequate tools. Those were
the last three times I let anybody else touch one of my cars. From now on,
if I can't fix it, I'm selling it broken and moving on.

Re: [MBZ] Who wants a 300TD cheap?

2007-08-01 Thread Levi Smith
All items I've thought of, but the XFi and HF's and VX's(haven't looked much
for the HX's) are first off, all still 10-20 years old and beyond that, they
seem to be rarer than hens teeth. I've had searches up for more than a year
now and in total I think I've seen maybe one HF that hadn't had an engine
swap and it was in an accident. I think I've seen a single XFi and the guy
wanted like $7K for it. I think maybe I've seen one or two VX's that hadn't
had engine swaps and they had other problems.

As for being easier to fix? Potentially... I had a CRX Si about 10 years
ago and IT was getting hard to find certain parts for. I can't imagine it's
improved in 10 years. And they did need work. It remains to be seen how
reliable the Prius' are. I've seen several people with more than 200K miles
on them(top was 280K miles), only really seeing sporadic issues with them
really and you can see that with the other cars. You've got to watch the
spare tire area on the CRX's cause they collect water and rust out... I've
already looked and I can find used replacement parts for the Prius' at
reasonable cost. Generally in the same ballpark as the used parts would be
for the other cars...

As for mileage? Yeah, they're all in the same ballpark. It all comes down
to how you drive any of them. From everything I can tell, the Prius is hard
to get below 40mpg, except in the middle of winter in NY you might get it
down to 35mpg. If you drive WITH the car, you can see close to 60mpg with
good conditions. The others can be close to that too, it just all depends.
My brother had an HF and he never saw even 40mpg with it...

Really the only other car vaguely in my sights at the moment are still the
TDi's, but the wife would prefer the Prius cause she doesn't want a stick
tranny and I'm not getting an auto TDi. The Jetta Wagons are too expensive
so there's no real advantage there. Basically, I'm getting hooked on the
ideas of generating power down my hill every day and driving distances
without the engine running and other techy stuff. Not to mention that also
for the wife's sake, the gas pumps are usually pretty clean, whereas the
diesel pumps are usually not...

The local yard here is called Pick-A-Part, and their prices are all posted
and non-negotiable...unless it comes to deciding whether it's a specific or
misc. item, which sometimes has a significant price difference. I much
prefer their pricing scheme, over the older hit n' miss yards of yore.

The U-Pulls (where you pull your own parts) seem to
be pretty much take-it-or-leave-it kinds of places.
Big conventional yards are also non-negotiable.

Just like in any other business, if it's high-volume
and you're not buying _in_ volume, the prices are fixed.
Small yards you could maybe dicker, but only _before_
the guy pulls the part for you!

 Hello Mike

My car is a European Model 123.223, and the VIN is WDB123223 121 70440.
Which is not the
way a VIN is structured on US models, and also does not contain the
engine number, or so I found.
Any software that asks for VIN rejects mine. But it is true, and the
Texas Department of
Transportation had no problem issuing a title to me.

I suspect your model is identified on the plate on the radiator top brace
that has the VIN. I'd think
it's bound to be there somewhere, perhaps buried. I think it's in the
VIN, but maybe not.
Somewhere there has to be something that says in effect Daimler-Benz AG,
blah blah blah
Model 123.something. If I knew for sure I would tell you.

83 300TD might be Model 123.190, which my book calls 300TD, or 123.193,
which
it calls 300TD Turbodiesel. There is also a 123.133 300D Turbodiesel,
which is a Japan
and USA special model with 15 in. wheels for extra clearance on bad roads.

123.190 came with 3.46 gearset, 45 teeth on ring, 13 on pinion.
123.193 came with 3.07 gearset, 46 teeth on ring, 15 on pinion.
123.133 came with 3.07 gearset, 46 teeth on ring, 15 on pinion.

The gear data above came from January 1983 Edition of Technical Data
Passenger
Cars, compiled for the technical personel entrusted with the service
and maintenance
of our passenger cars. by Daimler-Benz Aktiengesellschaft,
Zentralkundendienst.

Which no doubt includes us, so we can use it and not get in trouble with
the folks
 in Stuttgart..

You could do a rough and ready test and get pretty close to the gear
ratio:

Get both rear wheels up and car out of gear. Mark driveshaft and a tire.
Roll the tire
one revolution, keeping up with the number of driveshaft revolutions. If
you have a 3.07
gearset, you ought to see 3+ revs of driveshaft for one of wheel. With
3.46, you ought
to see about 3 1/2 revs of driveshaft for one of wheel. I used this to
tell that my old
Ford pickup has a 3.25 gearset.

 Good luck.

 Robert

My Mercedes Technical Data Passenger Cars says it depends

Wilton,

I have two styles of rocker switches that came with road driving light kits
and have never been used. Both are illuminated and press into a precut hole
in a panel. The small one is rated 15 amps, has a bright light, and would
fit into a hole about 1/2 wide and 1 1/8 high. The large one has a high
tech
look with an easy touch oversized rocker. It is rated 20 amps and has a
soft light, this would fit a hole cutout of 13/16 wide by 1 1/2.

Both switches have the standard 1/4 male tabs for spade connectors. These
are not MB switches, but either or both are yours for the asking.

No Kaleb offersLOL I need to get as close to $1500 as I can but I
need parts for my truck so cash talks..

Mike

 Hey All,
I have decided to sell my 83 300TD.

Used prices are traditionally set at 50% of the new cost, or less depending
on availability and supply/demand.

If you are looking for parts at a junk yard you should *always* know the
price of the part new before going in.

The price I paid was about 20 - 25% of the new cost, which I had
already determined at the dealer, though they refused to order the
part for me which is why I ended up at the junkyard.

The guy first asked if I already had gotten a quote (no) then made a
show of looking in a couple of books he pulled from an immense pile on
his desk. In the end I think he pulled a number out of the air.

Hi Allan,
I'm sure that happens. but personally, I take great pride in doing

someone else do it - but it's usually very specific things such as welding
(don't trust my own welding yet) or exhaust work becuase I hate laying on my
back having bits of rust and dirt fall into my eyes.

Naturally, I'm not going to screw up something my wife and family depend
on to safely travel in.If it's something I've never done before I will
research the things needed to make the repair properly or find someone I can
trust.

But I'm not advocating someone without any mechanical knowledge or
experience going out buying a pair of pliers and a BF hammer and starting
to rebuild that V12 Mercedes you;ve always wanted to see the inside of. ;-\

I was trained as a mechanic starting when I was 18 (50 years ago) and
worked as a professional mechanic off and on after attending the VW/Porsche
Mechanic Apprentice Program.

Anyway, it's always hard to make a point like this because I get tired

Also, when I do work, if I see something else needing attention I fix

shop will say it;s time for plugs, wires (have you priced SP wire sets

 parts are bad.

Some shops I have given Rustys address phone # but they typlcally
stick to the local FLAPS for parts they do not stock.

You must have a special tool or have made one to
reinstall the rain gutter trim on the 123 chassis. I
would not encourage anyone who doesn't have the tool
or access to one to attempt replacement, as it's a
near-impossible job without it.

That's not to say you can't do it (I have) but having
BTDT, it is not for the faint of heart, a car with a
fresh paint job, or one with limited manual dexterity.

It's especially difficult if you're using new trim, as
it has to be formed to match the shape of the car. If
you don't know what you're doing, you'll almost
definitely screw it up, or if you're living right,
have parts of it that won't stay in place and want to
pop off all the time.

The one I attend has a price list and that is what you pay.
Sometimes the counter people like you and know you, so they cut a
deal on things and call it all good. If you are a jerk, they will
count and charge for every little item, but I am nice and get a 4 for
3 price on things or miscounts/measures for trim, the large tail
lights shrink when they are rung up... things like that

Found a left-hand rear jump seat for my Nissan Frontier that I have

of late model Benz wrecks, along with Volkswagens, Volvos, BMWs, and

Quick question -- do you normally negotiate prices at a place like
this? I did not today, as I thought the price was reasonably fair and
I was just happy to find what I was looking for -- but as a general

Re: [MBZ] Need Manual trans fast

2007-08-01 Thread Loren Faeth
Floor shift or column shift?

NON MB manual trans are famous for not getting out of one gear before
the other gear is engaged (different shift linkages) On my column
shift bronco, I would frequently have to crawl under and disengage
one linkage manually. I HAVE had that also happen on column shift
MBs with a worn linkage. It does not happen on the floor shift trans
with the single shiftarm on top, in my limited experience) It can
happen, and frequently does happen on any trans with 2 or more shift
arms on the side. You just have to wiggle and jiggle until on or the
other pops into neutral. This is best done with the wheels chocked,
and the clutch pushed in, if possible.

After I converted the Bronco to a hurst floor shifter, it still would
lock up maybe once a year, but not near as bad. Because I cut a hunk
out of the tunnel to install the shifter, all I had to do then was to
lift up the boot, and I could get one into neutral from the
seat! THAT was a BIG improvement! (1966 U100, factory ragtop, now a
cla$$ic, if I still had it.) I sold it in 1988 with under 50k honest
miles for $500.

You can't unjam them from the shift lever, usually. You usually have
to work on the linkage or the shifter arms on the side of the
trans. A 12 or so channellock is good for persuading the shift
arms. On the 65 chevy, occasionally we could get it back into the
first or second gear position on the gearshift, then shift it
carefully into neutral and get it unjammed. Jamming on detroit 3
speeds occurs in the 1-2 shift. Jamming on MB 4 speeds occurs on the
2-3 shift, where the 1-2 arm is supposed to go into neutral before
the 3-4 arm engages 3rd. Jams occurr mostly when you try to shift
fast. I learned to always make the 2-3 shift on an MB column shift
slowly and very deliberately dogleg, holding the shift lever up and
back until it is in neutral, then forward, then up again, in 3
separate moves. It is habit now with any column shift.

Floor shift, three arms. Middle arm is reverse. All were very easy
to move prior to removal of shift arm and replacement of the
bushing. Tried to both gently and vigorously disengage each shift
arm to get into a neutral position with them unhooked from the
linkages. Then I had her towed to the shop -- wheels off the ground.

I was able to get a call in to Benz Friendz and they are moving metal
out every night in a large truck. Still sorting through the good
bits though and I can head over in the morning to pick up a
transmission or what all else I may need. Good bits are selling for
25% of normal, all else is going by the tonne.

Perhaps the application of horsepower (and burning clutch) jammed
 it so hard you
can't get the syncros to slide apart?
I'd be tempted to try to turn the engine backwards a bit and see
 if it
decreased the pressure on the gears enough to get reverse
 disengaged.
(for example, if you can turn the engine 10 degrees, turn it five
 degrees
so there's equal slop in both directions.)

 Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] 1980 300TD for $300 in Redmond (not a typo)

2007-08-01 Thread Kevin Kraly
Where is it posted? Are you talking about Redmond, WA? $300 for a TD is
definitely exciting to me, even though it's a NA model. On that note, I've
been toying with the idea to get a 300tD for some time now. The W115 is
nice, but won't fit 4 people and my big 90# Labrador. For those of you who
have had both W123 and W124 wagons, which is generally more reliable and
easiest to work on? There are way more W123's out there since they are
available in many different model years.

Doesnt Run but I bet there is nothing wrong with it.

Just got posted to craigslist, someone go buy it before I lose the
 battle with my greed.

You have my blessing to go get it. What more do you need? :-)
(If I were closer, so might I, may I R.I.P.!)
