Also the Airport Express has optical audio out, and you can then
setup your itunes app to beam music to the airport, then onwards to
your A/V system.
Thus I've a gigabyte hub, airport express lurking in the A/V

Re: [MBZ] O/T Router

2007-08-26 Thread LWB250
Here's the skinny from my buddy with the wireless dish
stuff:

Got some pictures below. First the dish is exactly the
same as the Dish network dish except for the feed
horn. I first took the feed horn apart and removed all
the electronics and then drilled a good size hole down
through the shaft and out the back of the horn to feed
the cable from my new horn. Directions and details on
how to make it are here
http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/15/how-to-build-a-wifi-biquad-dish-antenna/

There are also lots of other directions on the net
just search on Homebrew WiFi or Biquad dish WiFi The
granddaddy of all instructions are here
http://trevormarshall.com/biquad.htm

If you need the parts in a kit go here
http://cgi.ebay.com/Build-a-BiQuad-Booster-WiFi-Antenna-for-Linksys_W0QQitemZ120153511227QQihZ002QQcategoryZ44996QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

If you order one of these then you will have to know
what kind of electronics you will be using as the
antenna connectors are different. You need to hook
something up to the pigtail on the dish as the signal
degrades very quickly. I used a Linksys WET11 which is
a bridge. Then this is hooked up via cat5 to a Linksys
WAP11 which is a plain jane access point. If I were
your friend I would get the WET11 first and if he has
wireless access in his other building he may be able
to make the jump with just that hardware. The WET11 is
a bridge and if you know the name of the access point
you just put it into the WET11's setup and it will
auto-connect and you have a network. You can connect
to the WET11 directly with cat5 and plug into your
computer.

I connected the new feed dish to the old feed dish
with silicon and I will be putting a tupperware dish
around it to protect it from the weather.

Also notice in the pictures that the dish is mounted
upside down as our shot is horizontal and not up into
space. I then bought a small pigtail to convert the
feedhorn connection to the connection that was on my
airport card. I had to remove the battery and there is
a cover plate that was removed and then I could
disconnect the internal antenna and connect the dish.
I then fired up Macstumbler which will list and speak
the name of the access points that it finds. I then
moved and aimed the dish until I found my access point
that I was going to use (there were a bunch out there
) and then locked down the dish.

This is the point I am at now and I will be hooking up
the electronics next year with POE (power over
ethernet) and weather proofing everything.

Hope this helps but I would start with just the WET11
first as that may all he needs.

I turned down a couple of 2 year contracts in
Micronesia years ago. The thing that concerned me the
most was the inability to leave... you sign on for
these things and you're there for the duration. You
might get one or two rotations out to a place of your
choice, but...

That being said, if you're single and want to see the
world, it's a heck of a way to do it and make a
boatload of money in the process. The tax laws aren't
as liberal about offshore income as they used to be,
but it's still a good deal in most cases.

I have my cable modem in one room hooked up to my desktop and using a
wireless router I can hook in with my laptop from the rest of the house.
Speed was pretty slow though, so I ran a ethernet cable thru the closet and
bought a 50' ethernet cable - now the speeds are pretty high at 100mbps.
IIRC, the wireless speed was 1/3 of that. If I'm going to pay extra for
cable modem I should get the speed advantage.

YMMV --

If you live in an urban or suburban area, your access
point could easily be hijacked, for one. Allow that
to happen and watch your bandwidth drop as the
hijacker is an online gamer or is hosting bootleg pron
sites.

Also, if I can get into your access point, I can get
into your computer. That means anything connected to
your network can be compromised.

That's just the beginning.

Re: [MBZ] O/T Router

2007-08-26 Thread archer

I would love to run a cable to her house or put a dish on her house, but she
is a very impatient person. She was my wifes best friend so I've helped for
about ten years with various problems. As long as something can be fixed in
one day she's okay, but let it disrupt her daily routine or take two days
and she's just as likely to dump the whole project.
One daughter sent her a nice Apple computer which she used with a minimal
amount of bad language and help from the local Apple owners for several
years. Then she bought another Apple which gave her nothing but trouble, so
another daughter, who works for Dell, sent her a Dell comp. She asked me to
set it up and get it working, which I did. Then she wanted me to get it on
line with a DSL. I spent about a half day trying to make it work (turned
out Sprints modem was defective), and told her I'd come back the next day to
finish it after I read up on a few things and talked to Sprint. I asked her
to call me when she got up. She never did. I think she just let the new
computer set for a few days and then called Sprint and raised a big fuss,
which induced them to come out and get it working. I don't think she could
handle what would be entailed in running cable to her computer or setting up
a dish.
She has an interesting history. Her father was a Phd in physics who worked
for an oil company and was stationed in Malaysia, which was where she grew
up.
I think they got out of there just ahead of the invading Japanese in 1941.

Glad to know fiber has come down. This is the lightning capital of world,
and the last time it came in the house it travelled out a telephone cable to
the shop and wiped out a monitor and a couple of other things. About a
dozen different items in the house got zapped including the refrigerator.
I'd like to run fiber from the shop to the house some day since it's not
supposed to be as seriously affected by lightning.

[MBZ] Service manuals vs OSX

2007-08-26 Thread Jim Cathey
I've been using the CD service manuals for some time now on Mac OSX,
and they work pretty well. (After running the script to make file
links to deal with the badly-named PC-centric files and locations.
Script [fixlinks] included here:)

#!/bin/sh

# Because the Flash garbage on the Mac butchers pathnames
# (uses backslashes instead of slashes in URL's) we can patch
# around this by making hard links to messed-up names for all
# the files that are properly found in subdirectories.

TMP=/tmp/$$
cd program || { echo Required directory 'program' not found in '.';
exit 1; }
find . -name \*.pdf -print | sed -e [EMAIL PROTECTED]/@@ $TMP
$TMP perl \
 -e while () { \
-e chomp; \
-e \$from = \$_; \
-e \$to = \$_; \
-e \$to =~ s@/@[EMAIL PROTECTED]; \
-e link \$from, \$to; \
 -e }

rm $TMP

But I hate navigating down to matrix6, or waiting through the splash
screen stuff. So I made a little script that can be double-clicked.
Call it index.command, and make it executable (chmod 755 index.command):

#!/bin/sh
#MB service manual splash screen bypass for Mac OSX
dir=${0%/*}
cd $dir/PROGRAM open -a Mozilla matrix6.htm

WEP or WPA? It makes a difference, as WEP is a lot
easier to crack for someone who wants in.

That being said, I prefer WPA personal, not
broadcasting my SSID, and MAC addressing for the ACL.

It's not bulletproof, but it will be a lot less
attractive to the teenage hacker that might try to
crack it. More likely than not, they'll move on to
easier pickin's.

No loss of efficiency over very long runs. At the
school that I work at, we have a number of
intermediate data frames in each building, and the
fiber runs between these and the main data frame are
easily 100+ feet or more.

If you have the hardware that can use fiber, you can
pick up pre-terminated cables on eBay for very little
coin.

I haven't had to buy any in a long time, so I'm not
sure what kind of $$ we're talking about, but it's not
that much more than CAT6, IIRC.

If you live in an urban or suburban area, your
 access

 that

[MBZ] Ultra low sulfur diesel. Trouble for old injector pumps?

2007-08-26 Thread Robert Bigham
Hello all.

I suspect this has been discussed before, but I don't
know.

Does anyone know if the current ultra low sulfur diesel
has any bad effect on old Bosch injection pumps. like
on a 1981 VW Rabbit?

Yes, I have one of those. Its a curious, loud, shaky
little car, but fun in its own way. Gets 40+ mpg with badly
worn piston rings, low compression and burning oil at
150 mi/qt.

If there is a bad effect on th IP, is there anything I can
do about it? I'l start back driving the VW sometime in
October if my plans work out. I need to put my good
diesel engine it in in place of the worn one with a blown
head gasket and low compression otherwise.

Thanks

can pump 92 megabits (all my wired connection will allow) through the

You will have to add sulfur replacement additive for that rotary IP. I
will have to due the same on my Volvo, it also uses the rotary
distributor type pump. Available at all truck stops, I think. Look
for diesel additive with lubrication supplements.

Sounds like something from BALCO, eh?

Go over to Lowe's or Homeless Depot and buy a full spool of Cat 5e. 1000
foot spool will run you about $100. That's about twice what it was last
time I bought it, but the price of copper wire is through the roof. We have
a broom closet near the front door, so I mounted a wiring cabinet (about $50
from Fry's)and ran wire out to each room from there (called hub and spoke or
homerun layout). The wiring cabinet has a patch panel for cable coax, one
for telco connnections, and a 110 block for data connections. Also
mounted the sprinkler system controller and ran the sprinkler valve control
wires to the wiring closet. Each room in the house gets a 4 pair Cat 5e
cable for network and a 4 pair Cat 5e for telco, and a coax for cable.
Since the telco drop is 4 pair, I connect up two pair for two phone lines in
each room (more on that below) which leaves me with two more pair for
emergencies. I mounted a Netgear WGT624 WAP in the closet for when I don't
feel like running a drop cable to the nearest network drop. Since my
daughter, son-in-law, and the 3 grandkids live next door, I ran a Cat 5e
line between the houses, so we all use the same ISP connection I have an 8
port router plus the Netgear wireless router, and they have a router in
their house as well. My wife works from home 3 days a week, so she makes
good use of the fast internet connection.

I ran a telco line in from the telco network interface to my wiring closet
and installed a VOIP (Vonage) adapter in the closet so I could run the two
separate telco connections for each room. I dropped all but basic local
POTS service from Verizon, and we use Vonage for VOIP, and Skype to call our
daughter in the UK. If all else fails, we've got cell phones.

This is the third house I've wired...I think I got it pretty close what I
wanted this time...Next level is to run wire for stereo and video to all the
rooms...I think I'll pass on that one.

Howes lubricator is some great stuff for pumps ( and it does a nice job
of cleaning ), but the lubrication isn't the big problem, With changing
the fuels, older pumps ( all kinds ) are sprouting seal leaks, it's not
that the new stuff will eat up new pump seals, its just that old seal

If you have the engine out already, and if you have the tools to time

The last genset place I worked for was a Stanadyne
rep, and they (Stanadyne) sold a fuel additive similar
to RedLine that was for use in engines with their
rotary pumps when using low-sulphur fuels.

I don't recall which additive it was, but they have
some good information on their Web site about them:

http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/ppt_dfa.asp

An aside: While I was working for this company I was
driving my 1982 300SD. A forklift poked a hole in a
pallet full of the stuff one time, so there were all
these damaged containers of the fuel additive. I
asked if I could buy some of them off the company,
since they couldn't retail them.

The owner says, Hell, take all you want - we've
already written them off. I had diesel fuel additive
for months after that...

Go to the Service Library Indexes. The Library does a great job of

$18 is pretty cheap for anything from Apple.  They must be changing their

deterred me from trying it.

Eighteen bucks must be resold stolen goods. I paid $99 for mine.

Re: [MBZ] Ultra low sulfur diesel. Trouble for old injector pumps?

2007-08-26 Thread Tom Hargrave
Rotary pumps use the fuel as a lubricant I can see where there would be a
problem if ultra-low sulfur diesel has less lubricating properties than the
old stuff. But if memory serves me right, it's the paraffin in the diesel
that is a lubricant, not the sulfur.

Also, rotary pumps rarely last more than 60,000 miles of city driving
because the internals are aluminum and they tend to wear fast until they are
warm. This was a real issue with the early 80's GM Olds 350 based diesel
engines. The same rotary pump that would go 300,000 miles in a cross country
truck was dying with 60,000 miles of city driving.

Thanks,
Tom Hargrave

Seal leaks are more of a problem with biodiesel than with ultra-low
sulfur, but those rotary pumps do NOT like ultra-low diesel at all.
I've heard that from several sources, including the guys who rebuild
them.

Uh, I'm not sure where that number came from, but
you're not going to get one from the Apple refurb
store for $18. Current refurb price is $79.

Interesting.  If I didn't have several Linksys

$18 is pretty cheap for anything from Apple.  They
 must be changing their
pricing policies.  The high price of their stuff has
 been what's always
 deterred me from trying it.

Eighteen bucks must be resold stolen goods. I paid
 $99 for mine.

[MBZ] OT: The smell of late summer in New Mexico ...

2007-08-26 Thread Craig McCluskey
Roasting green chiles. I bought a 30 pound bag of mild Hatch green chiles
at our local supermarket and had the fellow out front roast them in his
roaster. We've spent the evening peeling and cleaning them. They're quite
good! If we make it to the RustyQ in Iowa, I'll bring some along.

 Why reinvent the wheel?

Wheel invention is my specialty!

with IE as I haven't been able to make his indexes reliably open pdf's
in a separate Acrobat window under Firefox.

That's why my script called out Mozilla: for whatever reason
Firefox insists on Acrobat 6 or nothing, won't use Preview
or A5. A6 is pig slow on this 233 MHz machine, whereas
the other stuff is perfectly fine.

Re: [MBZ] Airport Express

No loss of efficiency over very long runs. At the
school that I work at, we have a number of
intermediate data frames in each building, and the
fiber runs between these and the main data frame are
 easily 100+ feet or more.

At work we have miles of fiber on spools for testing.
Works great, or should, anyhow. There is short- and
long-haul fiber, the prices for transceivers and fiber
are _very_ different!
