Re: [MBZ] Hendrik and Co coming to the US of A in June A BIG THANK YOU

2010-02-23 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Caveat: All that follows can differ from state to state and even county
to county. Kids in bars - depends on the bar (and county, state).
There are many family-friendly establishments that serve alcohol as well
as food. Generally a bar that only serves alcohol will frown upon
non-paying underage customers (big fines and potential loss of license
if the kid gets a drop, no matter if provided by Mom or Pop).

So, if you'd like a beer or bottle of wine, that's a different liquor
license (usually), easier to find at restaurants. If you need a
Scotch, fewer choices but still many restaurants that have a bar
'attached' and can bring that scotch to your table for a meal with the
family.

Sorry I cannot help with recommending any good brands of Scotch, I'd
venture to guess that anything you can find in Australia can be found
here - maybe if you real off a few choices some one can chime in and let
us know. Beer - already a hot thread topic - almost as bad as an Oil
Thread - I generally stick with local micro-brews where ever I go,
usually more pricey but always more interesting!

Hope this helps,
Max

One night in the casino my roommate was approached by a woman wearing

Wanted to go up to our room and party. He said she was probably in her

Service on all U.S. airlines has declined significantly in my opinion,
by which I mean that they'll charge you for food, for bags, for changing
your itinerary, and when they wrong you they are generally unwilling to
'make amends'. If you suffer a 'weather delay' which really
inconveniences you, for instance you've checked your bags and cannot
retrieve them but must wait overnight for the flight, expect to have to
be very firm (always polite of course) about asking directly for a tooth
brush etc. and don't hesitate to elevate up the chain of command. Sadly
the Traveler's Aid desks are becoming more and more important in
America - years ago the airlines would provide overnight lodging in such
a situation.

Could be an adventure for the children!
We were quoted AUD$490.30 per person with Delta for the children to fly

Travel agent then found US airways flight for AUD$256.50 with a stop in
Arizona.

16 hours to make the 6 hour flight from Boston to Vegas, 24 hours to

On the way out purportedly there were weather delays in
Philadelphia, strangely no other airline had delays and our connection
took off on time...
The return was delayed for 5 hours because the pilot's seat belt was
broken. Worst - excuse - ever.
Then I was accused of stealing my own luggage by a woman who didn't
see the comma on my ID and didn't realize Raymond, Curtis on my ID and
Curtis Raymond on my bag were both me.
Then they lost my friend's luggage and told him we'll probably never
find it again. All the bags are tagged with a bar code which the gate
agent admitted is mostly for show.

At the time they had the trifecta:
Worst record for on time departures
Worst record for missed connections (probably because of above) Worst
 record for lost luggage

So I have a standing order with our travel agency that I never fly
with US Air.

In reality I had a run of bad luck which is probably not so bad
considering I fly probably a dozen times a year, most of the time with
no issue.

I didn't think of that either. D'oh. Have somebody switch back and
forth between economy (EC button) and full defrost (leftmost button
of the five on the ACC panel) while you watch the compressor clutch.
Not foolproof, though. Somebody could have hotwired the Klima relay
because the Freon was low and the compressor wasn't coming on. Or the
evaporator could still have a slow leak and they just keep topping it
off (or the dealer did!).

If it is like a 124, the headrest support rods extend down into the

with a gear (or vice versa, it's been a while) to move them up and
down. The cheapo fix is to take the back off the seat (the whole
panel slides upward and off) and attach the plastic part that has
separated from the rods back where it should be with cable ties. It's
obvious how it works once you get the back of the seat off.

Or the switch could just need a good cleaning.

I should add, DO NOT force the headrests down or you will break the
mechanism further, beyond the point where the cable-tie fix works, and
the little plastic bits probably cost a pretty penny from M-B.

Again, that varies from state to state... in Oregon tavern and pub
are not legal terms, I don't think; a bar serves primarily alcohol,
but is required to also serve food (although many skirt that
requirement by having no kitchen, instead offering a diverse selection
of microwaveable burritos and soggy prepackaged sandwiches); a
restaurant serves primarily food, but can also offer a full bar
menu. Many restaurants have a license to serve beer and wine only, not
hard liquor.

Sort of. Most restaurants with a wine license will generally allow you to
bring your own bottle, but charge a $10-15 corking fee. Even then, if you do
the math, it's cheaper to bring your own and know what you're getting rather
than rely on the distributor the restaurant works with.

Not a good idea to do that with low end wine, though. If the wait staff knows
wine at all, they'd probably see through it and treat you like a cheapskate
because of it.

The 210 style motors are prone to a fractured solder joint between the
motor and the PC board that they connect to. It is possible to
judiciously tease the thing apart and resolder the connection. Things
will work done after. The headrests are removed by extending them
upward fully then pulling them out by hand. (harder than you think you
should have to. Do not attempt to remove the headrests if they are not
at full mast.)

If it is like a 124, the headrest support rods extend down into the
backrest quite a ways, and a plastic rack attached to them engages
with a gear (or vice versa, it's been a while) to move them up and
down. The cheapo fix is to take the back off the seat (the whole
panel slides upward and off) and attach the plastic part that has
separated from the rods back where it should be with cable ties. It's
obvious how it works once you get the back of the seat off.

Or the switch could just need a good cleaning.

On the 84SD I used some channel locks trying to turn off the
reducer/hose coming off the tank screen, and the whole thing, screen and
all came off easily.I think you could probably fit a wrench up in
there to turn it, forget what size. I went to Sears and bought a big
socket to try to get the tank filter nut off, but didn't need it, and
probably could not have fit it up in there anyway (and I think it was
the wrong size too). I would suggest using channel locks but it was
fairly tight up in there on the SD.

One who expends money extravagantly, viciously, or without

and Polish Heritage, it was more a collection of small towns rather
than a big city. I have not been there much for the past 25 years,
and I know it has changed with the influx of mexicans. In general,
you want to stay out of the south 'burbs of chiago, and also the south

I think Plan A will be much more satisfying, if you can learn to drive
on the right side of the road. LaCrosse is a nice place and should be
pretty that time of year. YOU should see who among the list will gibe
you a permanent address in the US. I think I can, but there may be
others who can do better for you. Plan A1 can be to buy fa ke do cs
with a mexican name and drive around with out insurance like all our
Illegals do. That way you not only can disregard all the traffic
laws, but you can literally get away with murder too. I think
Heileman still has a brewery in LaCrosse.

We have cottage in N. Wiconsin and you could stay there for a week or
so if you can spare the time. I'd skip NY to spend a week at the
lake. Since I am allergic to that evil weed that you like to burn,
you'll have to burn em outside the cottage too. But unless it is
rainy, you don't need to be inside much there. There is a small boat
and a canoe there too. It is a private lake, so you can generally
fish without worrying about a license.

There are other cruises on the Mississippi. If you are lucky, you may
be able to go onboard the Delta Queen or the Mississippi Queen while
they are stopped. If you have enough money, you could even spend a
couple days onboard see www.deltaqueensteamboat.com

Hannibal, Mo is a good stop for river culture and Mark Twain history.
Don't know if you have ready any of his books, but almost every red

If you go to Lost Wages (vegas) there are junkyards out by the race
track (air force base) that have lots of MB goodies. The PNP is
generally good. YOu will need a car to get there. You can ship your
goodies back to OZ.

The train ride between chicago and Oakland, CA is spectacular! If you
choose to do any cross-couuntry train, I recommend it, and look at the

Mitch Haley wrote:

A little Wiki work indicates that the Arnold I knew was really named
Matsuo Takahashi. He bought the drive-in from the original Arnold, and everybody
assumed that if the place was Arnold's, then he must be Arnold.

(The real Arnold apparently got about ten seconds of camera time in season one)

It's possible that the 30th anniversary remake of the interior set is still
standing at the studio.

I quote from Wiki:
The Milky Way Drive-In, located on Port Washington Road in the North Shore
suburb of Glendale, now Kopps, was the inspiration for the original Arnold's
Drive-In. The Milky Way has since been demolished. The exterior of Arnold's was
a 'dressed' area on the Paramount Studios lot, that has since been demolished,
very close to the Stage 19, where the rest of the show's sets were located.

The set of the diner in the first season was a room with the same vague details
of the later set, such as the paneling, and the college pennants. When the show
was changed to a studio based filming, the set was redesigned and became the
Arnold's that is most remembered. The set was largely opened to show the
audience the scenes that took place within it. The Diner entrance was hidden,
but allowed an upstage, central entrance for cast members. The barely seen
kitchen was also upstage and seen only through a pass through window. The diner
had orange booths, downstage center for closeup conversation, as well as camera
left. There were two bathroom doors camera right, labeled 'Guys' and 'Dolls'. A
Seeburg jukebox was positioned camera right, and a pinball machine was
positioned far camera right, (anachronistically a 1973 'Nip It' machine,
contrary to the show's '50s setting).

College pennants adorned the walls including Purdue and University of
Wisconsin–Milwaukee, along with a blue and white sign reading 'Jefferson High
School'.

Storylines dictated that the set would be destroyed by fire, and so in later
seasons, a different Arnold's Drive-in emerged and lasted through the later
years of the show. Differing in design, with wood paneling and stained glass,
the set was not popular amongst viewers[citation needed], and was not how
Arnold's was remembered[citation needed].

In 2004, two decades after the first set was destroyed, the Happy Days 30th
Anniversary Reunion requested that the reunion take place in Arnold's. The
familiar set was rebuilt by Production Designer James Yarnell. Built from the
original ground plan, this was the first time that the Happy Days cast had been
in this set since the 1970s.

it's after the Ohio joins up (about 150 miles [240 km] further

Well, there's a steam-power stern-wheel paddle excursion boat in

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Tank Screen

2010-02-23 Thread Scott Ritchey
I used a vice grip to turn the big nut. I would not recommend removing the
screen. It is pretty course and you don't want that big crap in the lines.
In Normal operation with clean fuel (and a clean tank) the screen should
never get plugged. If it does, you have other problems.

In boats (with big tanks) it's not unusual to have fuel in the tanks for
long periods. The marine guys have a technique called polishing where
they pump the fuel through a series of external filters. This can take
several hours depending on tank size. But with a small auto tank, I'd just
us up most of the fuel and drain it through the filter hole. If a lot of
crud comes out you probably want to get a pro to drop and purge the tank.

When it goes up for sale, let us know. That is my favorite color scheme. I'd

To remove the regulator you undo the bolts, jam something in the

A little Wiki work indicates that the Arnold I knew was
really named
Matsuo Takahashi. He bought the drive-in from the original
Arnold, and everybody assumed that if the place was
Arnold's, then he must be Arnold.
(The real Arnold apparently got about ten seconds of camera
time in season one)

It's possible that the 30th anniversary remake of the
interior set is still standing at the studio.

I quote from Wiki:
The Milky Way Drive-In, located on Port Washington Road in
the North Shore suburb of Glendale, now Kopps, was the
inspiration for the original Arnold's Drive-In. The Milky
Way has since been demolished. The exterior of Arnold's was
a 'dressed' area on the Paramount Studios lot, that has
since been demolished, very close to the Stage 19, where the
rest of the show's sets were located.

The set of the diner in the first season was a room with
the same vague details of the later set, such as the
paneling, and the college pennants. When the show was
changed to a studio based filming, the set was redesigned
and became the Arnold's that is most remembered. The set was
largely opened to show the audience the scenes that took
place within it. The Diner entrance was hidden, but allowed
an upstage, central entrance for cast members. The barely
seen kitchen was also upstage and seen only through a pass
through window. The diner had orange booths, downstage
center for closeup conversation, as well as camera left.
There were two bathroom doors camera right, labeled 'Guys'
and 'Dolls'. A Seeburg jukebox was positioned camera right,
and a pinball machine was positioned far camera right,
(anachronistically a 1973 'Nip It' machine, contrary to the
show's '50s setting).

College pennants adorned the walls including Purdue and
University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, along with a blue and
white sign reading 'Jefferson High School'.

Storylines dictated that the set would be destroyed by
fire, and so in later seasons, a different Arnold's Drive-in
emerged and lasted through the later years of the show.
Differing in design, with wood paneling and stained glass,
the set was not popular amongst viewers[citation needed],
and was not how Arnold's was remembered[citation needed].

In 2004, two decades after the first set was destroyed, the
Happy Days 30th Anniversary Reunion requested that the
reunion take place in Arnold's. The familiar set was rebuilt
by Production Designer James Yarnell. Built from the
original ground plan, this was the first time that the Happy
Days cast had been in this set since the 1970s.

You might want to take it to a body or glass shop. You can remove
the door liner first. the big problem is that generally one small
piece of glass stays lodged in the track somewhere and screeches
every time the window goes up or down. I have had one like that for
30 years. If the shop can replace the track whil e they re at it, it
might be worth the price.

I can't remember how the glass goes in or out.

From my time in Texas:

  General

The sender (on top of the tank, accessable by removing the first aid
kit) and the strainer (accessable from under the car) both measure
1.804 across the flats. This is 45.82mm and implies one would use a
46mm (1.811) or 1 13/16 (1.813) socket. If you have a large enough
crescent or monkey wrench, you might be able to loosen it from inside
the trunk. I didn't try this, I just removed the tank, since my car had
been sitting a year-and-a-half outside here in hot, muggy Texas and I
wanted to take care of any algae that might have accumulated in it.

  Tank Removal

To remove the tank I followed this procedure:

 1. Slide a large piece of cardboard under the car in the area of the
fuel tank and differential to catch any fuel spills.
 2. Remove the fuel tank filler cap.
 3. Slide under the car from behind the passenger side rear wheel and
pinch the middle of the fuel supply hose between the strainer and the
metal tube that goes to the engine compartment with a pair of vise
grips.
 4. Disconnect the supply hose from the metal tube.
 5. Place a clean, dry 1 gallon plastic milk jug on a short piece of 2x8
and put the end of the supply hose in its mouth.
 6. Open the vise grips and fill the jug. Close the vise grips when the
jug is full.
 7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the tank is empty.
 8. Plug the end of the fuel supply hose with a 5/16 or 8mm bolt and
remove the vise grips.
 9. Slide across to the left side of the car and disconnect the rubber
vent line hose from its metal tube that goes to the front of the car.
The vent line is the larger diameter of the two hoses.
10. Pinch the fuel return line hose (the smaller of the two hoses) with
the vise grips.
11. Remove the fuel return line hose from its metal tube and plug the
hose with a 5/16 or 8mm bolt. Remove the vise grips.
12. Slide out from under the car, get in the back seat, and remove the
first aid kit.
13. Remove the plastic wheel wellprotector from the passenger side
of the trunk.
14. Remove the rubber ring between the fuel tank filler neck and the body.
This is most readily accomplished by grasping the ring on the outside
of the body with a pair of pliers and pulling while pushing on the
inside of the ring from inside the trunk with your fingers. I found
that the front edge of the ring was the easiest to get started.
15. Remove the four tank holding nuts and washers.
16. Get in the trunk.
17. Starting at the left side of the tank, lift the tank and pull the
top edge forward.
18. Struggle a lot while lifting and pulling, wondering if it will ever
come out, until it finally does come out.
19. Put the filler cap back on the filler neck.
20. Lay the tank down on a large piece of cardboard. Now the fuel gauge
sender is trivial to remove with a wrench. If you remove the
tank-to-body seal from around the strainer, the strainer is also
trivial to remove with a wrench.
21. If you remove both the strainer and the sender, you can shine a
bright light in the strainer hole and inspect the inside of the tank
from the sender hole.

Cleaning Sender

The sender has a small nylon cylinder in the middle of its flat bottom
that holds the bottom on. Grasp this gently with a pair of pliers and
rotate it counterclockwise to remove it. The metal plate of the bottom
will now come off easily and it can be wiped with a paper towel to get
the algae off it. Next is the rubber gasket. Its top side will harbor
some amount of algae goo, but it can be wiped clean as well.

At this point the metal cylinder that forms the outside of the sender
can be carefully pulled away from the threaded head, revealing the
sender mechanism. The tube can be readily cleaned inside and out with
paper towels rubbed on the outside and pushed through the inside as in
cleaning a gun's barrel.

The sender mechanism consists of two fine silver colored wires and one
larger, though not very large, copper colored wire stretched between the
threaded head and a spreader at the bottom. The spreader at the bottom
is held away from the threaded head by a central steel support rod. The
spreader has contacts for the reserve light and, since it's horizontal,
will also have an accumulation of goo. An old toothbrush dipped in
diesel will be helpful in cleaning the spreader and its contacts.

Take a clean paper towel and VERY CAREFULLY pinch with it one of the
three wires at the top near the head and pull toward the spreader, being
careful to not pull the wire to the side. Repeat if necessary and then
do the other two wires and the central steel support rod.

Also a part of the assembly is the float, which slides on the central
steel support rod. It has fingers that rub on both of the silver colored
wires, shorting them together so the
