[MBZ] 560 POSEL

2011-01-13 Thread Jim Cathey

Wretched POS! My wife came to pick me up at lunch, and just before
she got there she called me saying there were banging noises coming
from the car. She rolled up, and there was steam rising from the
hood. I popped it and had a look, and washer tank was boiling.
Weird! I'd guessed that the washer tank thermostat had failed open,
and the car was boiling off the fluid. The engine was hotter than
normal, but not in the danger zone. (Odd, in winter.) The radiator
was cool to cold. We got in and went a block or so to lunch. (Evil
intersection, hate it on foot.) The banging noises were coming from
the console. While eating I thought about it, nothing added up.
Afterwards I popped the hood and had another look. I opened the
coolant reservoir, and what I thought was a visible level was just a
stain in the tank, it was empty. 1.5 gallons of water into reservoir
later and it's full. Low coolant! Where did it all go? Why did not
the low coolant light come on?

Obviously the car lost its coolant, somehow, and gotten low to the
point that radiator flow was disrupted. Enough was left to carry heat
to the washer tank, which was boiling off, and coolant was boiling in
the heater core. Very much not good. Perhaps the engine was not
damaged, or perhaps it _was_ already damaged and that's what
started this?

At least the suspension was still OK.

[MBZ] OT Stinking Windows installation

2011-01-13 Thread Peter Frederick
I hope someone can help me with a Windoze machine -- it's my
brother's HP, about 6 years old or so. Put another used (supposedly
working) board in because the original was suffering from overheat
shudowns in spite of cleaning the heat sink, replacing the fan, and
using Arctic Sliver thermal paste.

My problem is that although it booted up, when I tried to re-activate
Windows it reboots instead. Eventually it won't reboot. It did load
new drivers for all the "new" hardware (new MB), and will run just
fine in safe mode, but crashes in a variety of ways when I attempt to
start windows normally.

I have not replaced the power supply (will try that tomorrow), but
get an occasional blue screen of death telling me that (DUH) I have a
device driver problem. Of course I do, I can't load them after
repairing the installation because it won't start!.

Any advice (beside buy a Mac, which is what I would do)?

Thanks!

ps. I hate windoze.

Re: [MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread Rich Thomas
When I was a kid my dad bought this little transistor radio that had cop
frequencies on it along with AM and FM. It also picked up mobile
phones, which at that time were these huge affairs that took up about 3
cuft and had a full-size corded handset. I recall there was this one
guy I would hear all the time, talking to his girlfriend on the phone
from the car, after he left his wife at home and was driving around.
Trouble is you could only hear one side of the conversation (the car) as
the receiving freq must have been different. He must have lived in the
neighborhood somewhere, I think he was like a sales guy or real estate
agent or something. I was like 14 or something, and learned a lot about
quite a bit from listening to this guy. Too funny. When my dad found
out what I was so intent on listening too, he took it away from me, and
I caught him listening a time or two.

I have other issues too like seats that are disintegrating but again, that

I did look up the local statute and regulations to see if it will likely
pose a problem to use my cell phone camera. I "suspect" that I may get away
with it so long as I have my Bluetooth doodad on the visor so I can show an
officer that I do have the ability to use it hands free. The regs say one
cannot even look at or hold the phone but I am guessing that I can just tell
them I was checking the battery level or checking to see if it was actually
on, and will get away with it.

Not sure what they might say about the camera issue. The regs do not say
anything about the use of cameras but do say you cannot use a device that
includes a cell phone.

find ways to avoid them.
For example, a friend who is a sales rep frequently gets calls from
customers while he's driving.
When he was driving through counties that had the "no cell phone" law, he
would put his cell phone between two pieces of bread and hold it up to his
ear. The single time a cop stopped him, he dropped the bread slices and the
cell phone on the floor and picked up a real sandwich.
The conversation went something like this:
"You were talking on a cell phone and that is illegal while you are
driving."
"I was eating a sandwich."
"Why did you have it up to your ear?"
"So I could see where I was going."
"Where is the sandwich?"
He picked up a real sandwich which had a bite out of it.
"Where is your cellphone?"
He pretended to look for it and then retrieved it from the floor.
The cop went back to his car and apparently called headquarters.
"You can go.", said the cop.
That was the only time he was stopped, and he won't have that
problem again since he bought a new car which has a
built-in microphone and speaker.

Perhaps you can cut a hole in a slice of bread for the lens,
Randy, and use your cellphone camera the same way.
Of course, if you were a lawyer in Florida you would have
nothing to worry about since cops never ticket lawyers unless
they're blind drunk or politicians in a different party than the
sheriffs or chiefs.

I saw in the "sheriffs list" in the local paper where a woman had
been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon because she had
one of those little "pepper spray" cannisters in her purse.

I and some other community agitators have been back and forth with
the Sheriff and his top guys for about a year and a half over people
driving like fools on our roads, which are very narrow and have very
large oak trees growing right on the edges. We have a very high
crash rate, and a fair number of fatalities. Speeding, passing on
yellow lines, tailgating, not paying attention and swerving all over
(the trees do not move when hit). We live on Johns Island, which is
the 2nd largest island on the east coast (maybe the US, I need to
look), and there is NO police presence here, no regular patrols, no
station. Nearest sheriff station is at least 5 mi away from the
island, 20 mi from my house. The county is 80 miles from one end to
the other, there are only 9 patrol officers for the whole county.
None of that is the Sheriff's fault as the county sets his budget,
but we have been asking for more presence and have had ongoing
conversations, I see him at county council meetings occasionally, so
in touch.

On the second one the offender called me about 30 min after I sent
the email, he was the Lt in charge of community relations, and a very
nice guy. We chatted for quite some time, then met later, he
acknowledged not paying attention and speeding, and was very
apologetic. (I asked him how that would go over with Judge Linen,
our local magistrate, he admitted "not very well"). Of course
getting his butt reamed by the sheriff probably had some energizing
effect, but he was very sincere and I think learned from it. We did
get more attention for a few weeks thereafter, but back to zero
again. I bought a sports radar gun ($80) and have occasionally been
taking vids of speeders and a running commentary of speeds, that has
got some attention too. Got them to install an unmanned radar set up
on one of the roads, and record speeds for a week, the highest speed
was a deputy rushing to an armed robbery down the road a bit, doing
110mph at 11PM (which on our roads is insane in the daylight) trying
to go the 20 miles as fast as possible to get to the robbery.

I continue to community agitate...

Nope, the data shows roughly 30 year heating and cooling cycles. We
are about 10 years into the cooling cycle. Dr. Deming always said
to never confuse normal variation with special cause variation.
Albore never heard that lesson.

A number of years ago "global cooling" was popular. Our effluents
were supposed to block out the sun and turn the world into a big ice
cube. Beginning to look like the "coolers" were right and the
"warmers"

were wrong.

Actually, although my life seems to have fallen off the rails (I have gout, my
laptop died, due to snowmageddon I didn't work yesterday so my class took extra
time Tuesday night and tonight, and all the fools trying to commute at a
million miles an hour and miss the road make commuting a nightmare) my MB seems
to be doing well. I've finally put 1,000 miles on the '84 190D and it seems to
be doing better every day. I do need to find time to tighten the wheel bearing
I put in last week and get it aligned and put in a new cruise control amp (this
one just wants to accelerate) but otherwise I'm quite pleased with it.

Having lived for 65 years in what may be the most corrupt state in the U.S.;
(Since 2000 Florida had the most, [729], federal corruption convictions of
any state with second place New York far behind with only 633); we
Floridians don't necessarily obey onerous laws to the letter.  We find ways
to avoid them.

Interesting.

Re: [MBZ] Australian floods

2011-01-13 Thread Hendrik & Fay

Walt,

Along with other countries the American government have offered to help
in any way they can.

The people of Queensland will be grateful for any help they can get -
last reports were that the 70 cities & towns have been affected, there
have been 15 deaths, 61 people are still unaccounted for & 8,500 people
are isolated in remote towns due to the flood waters.

Damage bill so far is $11billion & rising.

75% of Queensland has been affected by these floods & we will feel the
effects of this across Oz for some time.
Mines have been flooded & food prices - which are high already - will
escalate as a result of all the crops & livestock that have been wiped out.

Towns in Northern New South Wales are now being affected as the water
flows down from Queensland.

Hendrik & I will donate what we can to help the state & we are far
better off than the people of Haiti, but this would have to be the worst
natural disaster to ever hit this country.

Re: [MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread Tim C
In North Carolina, the no-texting law was intentionally designed to
only ban forms of written communication - text messages, e-mail,
instant messages - where there was a recipient on the other end. It
is discussed in the law that it allows other forms of typing that do
not have a communicative aspect; GPS and searching for a phone number
are mentioned, but I would speculate that camera, music, etc. would
also be legal for drivers over 18.

Our law does specifically say "mobile telephone" so I guess if you
have an e-mail device that does not have a phone on it then you are
golden - where are you, Palm? But if you try that and get busted you
are on your own. :)

Definitely all this only applies in NC; I know some states have much
stricter laws, though I don't travel enough to say which.

(as I was going the speed limit) then got right up on the bumper of
this other car, that was actually speeding too. I got up to their
speed to get the pic, maybe 6-8 car lengths behind. Time stamped
photo from my cam. The other guy just passed me, going way too fast,
I got behind him, took the pic, 15 over.

I and some other community agitators have been back and forth with the
Sheriff and his top guys for about a year and a half over people
driving like fools on our roads, which are very narrow and have very
large oak trees growing right on the edges. We have a very high crash
rate, and a fair number of fatalities. Speeding, passing on yellow
lines, tailgating, not paying attention and swerving all over (the
trees do not move when hit). We live on Johns Island, which is the
2nd largest island on the east coast (maybe the US, I need to look),
and there is NO police presence here, no regular patrols, no station.
Nearest sheriff station is at least 5 mi away from the island, 20 mi
from my house. The county is 80 miles from one end to the other,
there are only 9 patrol officers for the whole county. None of that
is the Sheriff's fault as the county sets his budget, but we have been
asking for more presence and have had ongoing conversations, I see him
at county council meetings occasionally, so in touch.

On the second one the offender called me about 30 min after I sent the
email, he was the Lt in charge of community relations, and a very nice
guy. We chatted for quite some time, then met later, he acknowledged
not paying attention and speeding, and was very apologetic. (I asked
him how that would go over with Judge Linen, our local magistrate, he
admitted "not very well"). Of course getting his butt reamed by the
sheriff probably had some energizing effect, but he was very sincere
and I think learned from it. We did get more attention for a few
weeks thereafter, but back to zero again. I bought a sports radar gun
($80) and have occasionally been taking vids of speeders and a running
commentary of speeds, that has got some attention too. Got them to
install an unmanned radar set up on one of the roads, and record
speeds for a week, the highest speed was a deputy rushing to an armed
robbery down the road a bit, doing 110mph at 11PM (which on our roads
is insane in the daylight) trying to go the 20 miles as fast as
possible to get to the robbery.

I continue to community agitate...

A friend with an American car said the same thing. It's about 12 years old,
and had only very slight rust last year. But it just took off over the
winter, and he even has a few small perforations!

I give the cars a good soaking in both the regular Rustcheck, and the
thicker farm grade stuff in the late Fall. I'm sure most washes off, but I
try to top up the most vulnerable spots, whenever we get the odd dry day.
Sills and fender lips seem to take the most beating here.

I washed my car today, it was white with salt and I just had to get the worst
of it off. Went to one of those high-pressure-wand places. Sprayed the locks
with lock anti-freeze afterwards.

Some of the rust that was just bubbles last fall has really advanced. I was
shocked at how much it had spread on the lip of the rear fender, for example.
I'm going to have to get out the grinder and welder this spring and see if I

not a big fan of washing salty cars too much in the winter, but at the same
time, I can't stand a dirty car either!!

About twenty years ago, I heard about a $10 a month (includes ten free minutes
of talk) deal and wanted them to sell me a used car phone and a used bag phone,
cloning them so I could use whichever one I wanted at any given time. The
Verizon rep refused, of course. And I refused to pay $10 a month for a phone I
couldn't take out of the car. My aunt got one a few years later. When they shut
down the analog network four years ago, they gave her a new phone for free,
about 1/5 the size of the old phone, and they still charge her 9.99 a month.

Car phones as opposed to the alternative, Bag phones.

I just remembered, my old 300E had a mercedes (dealer installed?) built in
phone when I got it, along with a hands free mic on the A pillar. The hard
wiring for the antenna, and wire that's hidden behind the A pillar remain,
but I yanked out the phone as soon as I got it. I did the same with my old
911. Back then, a car phone was a pretty rare thing. Yeah, they were
called "car phones" at that time too, not mobiles, or cell phones. Go
figure, eh.

Not sure what they might say about the camera issue. The regs do not say

For example, a friend who is a sales rep frequently gets calls from

When he was driving through counties that had the "no cell phone" law, he
would put his cell phone between two pieces of bread and hold it up to his

Perhaps you can cut a hole in a slice of bread for the lens,

Of course, if you were a lawyer in Florida you would have
nothing to worry about since cops never ticket lawyers unless

Anyone actually look at the laws, regulations, whatever, that impose the
fines for use of cell phones in your jurisdiction?

The reason I ask is that my cell phone has a camera in it and I sometimes
use it to take photos while driving if I see something interesting. It
occurred to me recently, that this is probably no longer acceptable. If an
officer sees me with the phone in hand, I am going to get the ticket and I
doubt he has to prove I was actually phoning someone. The phone company
should be able to provide evidence that I was not on a call at
that time but

that might not be sufficient to get one off - and one would have to waste
the time going to fight the ticket which would cost more than the ticket.

Then the question arises - is using a digital camera instead any
better? I am guessing that the law says one is not to use electronic
 devices rather than "cell phones".

Around here, civil infractions are a 50% doubt matter, so if it was written as
part of a crash report you might beat it, but if a professional witness stands
up in court and says 'yep, I saw it', there's no force on earth that's going to
save you from the fine in my county. The cops who write BS tickets get the OT,
and they get convictions. I just make sure the BS ticket takes up 2 hours of a
district court's time to get even with the system for it.

The last time I got a ticket, the prosecuting attorney wanted a pre trial
conference to settle with me out of court. His opening line was something along
the lines of 'looking at your record, I don't see any basis for this charge'.
I think he knew the previous trial took two hours, they had to change
prosecuting attorneys in the middle of the trial because the first one had to be
in another trial and mine wasn't over yet.

There was a chap in the Detroit area who had a much higher than normal rate of
court hearings for his traffic tickets. He'd write people for running stop signs
when they didn't. They'd get mad, fight it, lose, get madder, and pay it. After
a couple of years of this, somebody in the command structure noticed he was
making $20k a year for court appearances on stop sign tickets where he was the
only one who thought the driver ran the stop sign. Then the SHTF.

why ask? because you don't know the laws in every state. fair enough; i
wouldn't expect most people do, or need to!

in California, VC Section 23123 specifies "using a wireless
telephone"... i doubt you could be held to fault under that section of
the code for using it as a camera any more than you could be for using
the clock on it to check what the time is.

it would be easy enough to show that you weren't engaged in an
active phone call just by checking the phone or carrier records, but
there are plenty of other provisions that deal with distracted driving
that you could be faulted under that would make that all unnecessary.
(of course, enforcement of existing Distracted Driving laws would
have covered Cell Phone use and texting to start with, but enforcing
existing laws isn't as sexy for a politician as being the Champion of
another new law,...)

Anyone actually look at the laws, regulations, whatever, that impose
the fines for use of cell phones in your jurisdiction?

The reason I ask is that my cell phone has a camera in it and I
sometimes use it to take photos while driving if I see something
interesting. It occurred to me recently, that this is probably no
longer acceptable. If an officer sees me with the phone in hand, I am
going to get the ticket and I doubt he has to prove I was actually
phoning someone. The phone company should be able to provide evidence
that I was not on a call at that time but that might not be sufficient
to get one off - and one would have to waste the time going to fight
the ticket which would cost more than the ticket.

Then the question arises - is using a digital camera instead any
better? I am guessing that the law says one is not to use electronic

Re: [MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread Rich Thomas
I snapped pics that showed (somewhat out of focus, but readable) my
speedo and the cop car ahead (from which the license plate was
visible). The first one was going about 55 in a 45 zone, about 8ft off
the bumper of the car ahead. I pointed out this guy had passed me (as I
was going the speed limit) then got right up on the bumper of this other
car, that was actually speeding too. I got up to their speed to get the
pic, maybe 6-8 car lengths behind. Time stamped photo from my cam. The
other guy just passed me, going way too fast, I got behind him, took the
pic, 15 over.

I and some other community agitators have been back and forth with the
Sheriff and his top guys for about a year and a half over people driving
like fools on our roads, which are very narrow and have very large oak
trees growing right on the edges. We have a very high crash rate, and a
fair number of fatalities. Speeding, passing on yellow lines,
tailgating, not paying attention and swerving all over (the trees do not
move when hit). We live on Johns Island, which is the 2nd largest
island on the east coast (maybe the US, I need to look), and there is NO
police presence here, no regular patrols, no station. Nearest sheriff
station is at least 5 mi away from the island, 20 mi from my house. The
county is 80 miles from one end to the other, there are only 9 patrol
officers for the whole county. None of that is the Sheriff's fault as
the county sets his budget, but we have been asking for more presence
and have had ongoing conversations, I see him at county council meetings
occasionally, so in touch.

Of course getting his butt reamed by the
sheriff probably had some energizing effect, but he was very sincere and
I think learned from it. We did get more attention for a few weeks
thereafter, but back to zero again. I bought a sports radar gun ($80)
and have occasionally been taking vids of speeders and a running
commentary of speeds, that has got some attention too. Got them to
install an unmanned radar set up on one of the roads, and record speeds
for a week, the highest speed was a deputy rushing to an armed robbery
down the road a bit, doing 110mph at 11PM (which on our roads is insane
in the daylight) trying to go the 20 miles as fast as possible to get to
the robbery.

I continue to community agitate...

I've had a judge tell me, on the record (with a court reporter typing) that LEOs
don't have to obey traffic laws. I couldn't tell if he was that ignorant of the
law or that blatant about refusing to apply it properly. I've read the law here

Guess it would be pretty hard to tick those boxes on a crash report, unless
the crash was witnessed. Can't imagine anyone saying, "oh yeah, I hit the
pole as I was checking my messages". hee hee

I have to say, the cops around here on the whole are pretty decent and
fair. You see the odd one doing something they shouldn't on the roads, but
probably much less so than what the average of most other drivers are
doing. When pulled over for spot checks or whatever, they're always very
polite and respectful, which I'm sure isn't easy for them at times, given
what they must deal with daily.

As a friend who was once interested in becoming a cop told me, "the average
cop is no more interested in standing at the side of the road writing out
tickets for 5-10mph over than you are in receiving them. Those duties are
not why most sign up to become cops.

be charged $616. The state of California is going for blood, so be extra

[MBZ] Double decker race

2011-01-13 Thread Rich Thomas
I watched an episode of Top Gear last night where they raced cars that
were double-stacked, the car on top steered and the one on the bottom
had the brake and accelerator. 2 300E's with something on top, driven
by Germans, and the Brits had a Jag/Mini and maybe another one like
that. It was a total riot. The Germans won.

[MBZ] fines for use of cell phone without hands free device??

2011-01-13 Thread R A Bennell

So, to start with, I know, I am a lawyer so why am I asking you folks??

I don't know and am wondered if any of you might know is the basic answer.

Anyone actually look at the laws, regulations, whatever, that impose the
fines for use of cell phones in your jurisdiction?

The reason I ask is that my cell phone has a camera in it and I
sometimes use it to take photos while driving if I see something
interesting. It occurred to me recently, that this is probably no
longer acceptable. If an officer sees me with the phone in hand, I am
going to get the ticket and I doubt he has to prove I was actually
phoning someone. The phone company should be able to provide evidence
that I was not on a call at that time but that might not be sufficient
to get one off - and one would have to waste the time going to fight the
ticket which would cost more than the ticket.

Then the question arises - is using a digital camera instead any
better? I am guessing that the law says one is not to use electronic
devices rather than "cell phones".
