Re: [MBZ] W123 AC - Part 3 Begins

Where can you find a filter? I was going to put them in both cars but
couldn't find a source on first attempt and then forgot about it since the
job needed to be finished.
Gerry

From: Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net

Install a filter in the suction line (which your mechanic should have
done initially). Any time a compressor fails, there will be shrapnel
all through the system, and it cannot be flushed out. Clutch failure
shouldn't do this, but then a clutch is an easy replacement, I'd not have
changed the compressor.

At any rate, until you get a filter in the suction line and blow out
whatever crud you can, you will chew up a new compressor in short order.

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Gerry Archer

Thanks to Rick, Richard, and Loren for your advice; and to Fred for the
connector which arrived in good order. Going to wire it up and try it
again. If the connector wasn't the problem, will put a good regulator in
and try it. If that doesn't work, will chuck the 3 used alternators in the
drill press one at a time and try the half dozen regulators (hooked to the
12 volt shop battery) until I find a good combination. If that doesn't
work, I'll assume that the battery, (which had boiled out most of its water
in one cell), is at fault and get FLAPS to put in a new battery which they
agree to do at my option.

Gerrymostly talking to myself

From: Gerry Archer arche...@embarqmail.com

Sorry to interrupt this ongoing discussion about Rusty and Trent and Gary,
but I have a question about the alternator on my '83 300D.

There are three wires coming out of the alternator. Service Manual
SM-1243 shows that the two heavy wires, same color, are common inside the
alternator. It also shows that these two wires terminate at a buss bar on
the right rear inside front fender. This seems unusual having two common
wires originating and terminating between the alternator and buss. The
only explanation I can think of is that MB is dividing up the 60 amp load
between two wires instead of having one larger wire.

The manual also shows the battery connected to this buss but doesn't show
where.

Can someone tell me where the wire from the buss to the battery connects
to the positive battery cable so I can check it's continuity and clean the
connection?

With the key on run there is 12v on all three wires to the alternator.
With the key off, there is no voltage on the small green wire and still
12v to the other two heavy wires. It is a new alternator, but it still
doesn't show 13.7v when engine is running 600 to 1200 rpm.

Also, where is the ground strap from the frame to the engine/transmission?

Thanks,
Gerry

 Thanks,
 Gerry

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Richard Hattaway
What kind of claim is this???

Jumper cables are like welding cable.  At least good ones are.  The two
batteries are running 12 volts float.  There is little likelihood of anything
other than minor charging going on between the two batteries, since he said
he's disconnecting the 'good' vehicles cabling.

This is nothing more than jump starting the car as far as the cables are
concerned.  Nothing is going to burn up here.

In fact, what will probably happen is the alternator will begin charging the
newly introduced battery since the questionable one was run dry, thus has a
high resistance cell eliminating the ability for the battery to be charged by
the alternator.  He's looking for 13.7 out of the alternator which is correct,
and should be achieved if A) the alternator is capable of charging, and B) the
battery is able to be charged.

It's a simple test, takes seconds, and is accurate.  It can be done in business
clothes.  It eliminates or proves half of the A) and B) above. There is no
chance of meltdown or fire any more than there is during any jump start
situation.

Please be accurate and thoughtful with your posts before making some wild
comment about burning up cables, etc.  Someone here might think you know what
you're talking about.

Not yet, I am going to skip work and go down Thursday or Friday. I will
have two 126s for a while so stop by when you visit your in-laws, or put
in

some requests so I pull what you want before the scrap man comes.

Generally, the plan is to do a motor swap, the 603 from my 300SDL into
Wilton`s 350. I hope that the transmission is the same? Or else the
whole

thing is going in. :)

Other than that I am curious about the condition of Wilton's engine, can
anyone recommend any diagnostics? Seems a shame to scrap it if it is easy
to fix, but I also don't want to blow a weekend troubleshooting only to
wind up tossing it anyway.

Best,
Tim

Digest mode with mailing lists is for people who want to read a lot but not

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Ever try to start a car where the battery in the car is dead? It takes a
helluva lot of current to get a car started. Normal battery cables are so short
they don't have to be all that thick. Now you want to run from one car to
another your cables have to be thick to make up for the distance. I'm sure
theres a rule that explains how thick for the distance.

Mercedes diesels in particular take a ton of power to get started, theres a
reason the battery is a grp 49.

Most jumper cables are garbage, like 4ga. I've got a set of good ones that are
0ga that were like $90 and are heavy. People joke when they see them but
they'll haul a lot of power.

One time jumping a co-worker's car I didn't have my cables so we put my 240D
with some wimpy cables somebody had and nothing happened. We waited and waited
and got nowhere other than the cables got warm. Got another set of wimpy cables
from somebody else and waited around when the second set was warm too the car
started...

What kind of claim is this???

Jumper
cables are like welding cable.? At least good ones are.? The two
batteries are running 12 volts float.? There is little likelihood of
anything other than minor charging going on between the two batteries,
since he said he's disconnecting the 'good' vehicles cabling.

This is nothing more than jump starting the car as far as the cables are
concerned.? Nothing is going to burn up here.

In
fact, what will probably happen is the alternator will begin charging
the newly introduced battery since the questionable one was run dry,
thus has a high resistance cell eliminating the ability for the battery
to be charged by the alternator.? He's looking for 13.7 out of the
alternator which is correct, and should be achieved if A) the alternator
is capable of charging, and B) the battery is able to be charged.?

It's
a simple test, takes seconds, and is accurate.? It can be done in
business clothes.? It eliminates or proves half of the A) and B) above.
There is no chance of meltdown or fire any more than there is during any
 jump start situation.

Please be accurate and thoughtful with
your posts before making some wild comment about burning up cables,
etc.? Someone here might think you know what you're talking about.

Re: [MBZ] W123 AC - Part 3 Begins

2013-09-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Thats probably the best plan, otherwise I'll probably replace the one oring and
then find that there are other parts leaking that I don't know about.

Biggest problem with this jack and sourcing parts is that there are NO labels
on it at all. Neighbor gave it to me after it sat under his deck for a couple
years. All the paper labels and stickers have worn off.

He gave me a 12 ton bottle jack that I managed to resurrect with new oil and a
little shoe goo to put the plug back together. Funny somebody mentioned oil
that smelled like vomit the other day, thats exactly what I thought as I
drained the oil from that jack...

Curt,
Look in the yellow pages for someplace that repairs garage
lifts and jacks. That is where I found all the parts I needed to
repair my 25 or 30 year old Sears floor jack. I had to take all
the parts and go up to Jacksonville for it but still better then
buying a new jack. They even had this big plastic or rubber thing
that was in there. Cheap too only $12 or so as if I recall.

Probably still have to buy a new jack since this one is getting
heavier all the time. May be that some of the air around here is
sticking to it or something.

If you are saying you are going to use your jumper cables in between the

answer your question. Better to just swap out the batteries and see if the

Re: [MBZ] Wilton's car

2013-09-03 Thread Rich Thomas
We are going to be there Tgiving if it is still around at that point. I
can come pick and help you do whatever, will have tools and would love
to get away and do something useful. You should wait until about then
anyway as it is too hot to work on stuff outside anyway. I might be up
there to bring the other SD to the girl and retrieve Mama's, as soon as
I do a few things to it, and the swapper is the car I need some bits
for. We could have a parts swap party, I'll bring some brews.

I need a LF marker light and an aux fan bracket mount at least, and
maybe some other stuff too once I get to thinking about it. Oh and a LF
window motor/reg as your teeth might not match mine. That stuff I could
use fairly quickly. I was going to go to the knackers but they think
their junk is gold and with all the rain there are probably rattlers and
copperheads as big as me out there in the swamp where they keep the Benzes.

You probably ought to pull all that good smaller stuff anyway for spares
and such.

I don't know if the transmission is the same, but if the 603 is like the
61x, there is a plate that bolts onto the back of the block that holds
the starter and transmission. If there is one and you change that, there
should be no problems of transmission.

Quite true Gary.. the West intimidates those from the East who have only

It truly takes a different attitude to understand just how wide open spaces

[MBZ] '97 E420 Instrument Cluster and Dipstick

2013-09-03 Thread M. Mitchell Marmel
Since my current cluster has quite a few missing pixels on the
display (and maybe a wonky fuel gauge, since it stays on full all the
time*), and since overhauling the durned thing would be a $300
proposition**, I'm mulling over getting a cluster on eBay for under a
C-note.

*Yes, I know, fuel sender, yadda yadda, will try that as well.
** Not brave enough to try cracking the thing open and replacing the
ribbon cables, thanks.

Anyhoo, would a cluster from a different year/model of W210 (say, an
E320 for instance) work? Or are the engine inputs wired differently?

Also, does anyone have a spare dipstick for an M119 lurking about?
The handle on mine disappeared during a road trip to Memphis.

Thanks!

Digest mode with mailing lists is for people who want to read a lot but not
post much. This is a well-established convention.

However, MIME-aware email clients will show the digest as a set of discrete

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Richard Hattaway
He never said his car wouldn't start.  He said the alternator won't charge.
And there is an opinion that the battery is the culprit.

If the car is hard starting too, then he has to use real jumper cables.
Nothing else changes.

Geeze, you guys are a bunch of alarmists.  Well, one or two of you anyway...

Sure, he can swap the batteries if he wants to.  Fine.  My point is that it's
an easy check to see if the battery is the issue, and to not wait until after
he's tried three regulators and set up an alternator test bench with a drill
press to sort out the culprit.

And if he does it as I described, he'll already have it done while you guys are
all standing around kibitzing about how it wont work for this or that reason.

Digest mode with mailing lists is for people who want to read a lot but not
post much. This is a well-established convention.

However, MIME-aware email clients will show the digest as a set of discrete
messages, each of which can be replied to individually. Yahoo mail is not

Contrary to what you might think.. cutting the head off a rattlesnake does
not render it safe.. I've had severed heads still strike after as long as
45 minutes... with the capacity to deliver a lethal dose of venom... so..
should you encounter one... kill it and leave it.. resist the impulse to
pick it up cause it's dead... They are also very territorial. If you
find one near your residence and have it removed.. it will find it's way
back within the next month.. When I first took the Ranch, I would capture
and remove any rattlesnake that came around the ranch house.. soon I
noticed what looked like the same snake [yes.. they all look alike, scary]
so I spray painted the ones captured.. sure enough.. they came back.. Since
then... I hang them on the fence and and bury the head, the coyotes or
vultures eat... nothing goes to waste.

Re: [MBZ] buymbparts is dead drunk at walmart

2013-09-03 Thread Curt Raymond
I've never understood relocating wildlife. What most people are doing is
making their nuisance wildlife somebody else's problem.
I've been having an amusing discussion on Facebook with a friend who keeps
saying things like we moved our raccoon to the country to which I reply We
made the raccoon somebody else's problem. I contend in those cases a pellet
gun is the best answer. The raccoon quickly learns that turning over my garbage
cans is a bad idea that makes his ass hurt and moves on to somebody else who
gives him a free ride to somebody else's house.

Gawd.. what a visual...

Sorry to burst your fantasy, but I do not keep rattlesnakes as pets.. They
present a clear and mortal danger to me at the Ranch. Should I be bitten,
due to the remote location, medical help and intervention is to far away.

Now.. how do we get Gary and the bicycle wrapped into the movie plot with
the mutant flying bat snakes and the sheilas with bad habits.. Help me out
here Hendrik... I see a Cowboys and Aliens remake in the works... ;))

Grant...

The boogers have already eaten what clear may have been on the hood. If it
goes poorly, I have told the owner that I will cover a maaco respray of the
hood. Pretty hard to screw up black I am guessing.

Hood on the SE has suffered pine drippings that ate through the paint in
areas. Hood looks like a teenagers face, all pock marked. Black car and
the damage areas are stark white and stand out. I was able to clay the
debris, but that did not reduce the dimensionality of the damage. SO

I pulled out the 2000 wet sanding pad and will be working up to 6000 grit
before I start using a paste polish system to restore gloss.

Was this not a smart idea? Been raining too hard today to get beyond 2k, so
will hold off until I am not drenched (though it does make sanding detritus
flow) Soaker setting on the hose provides good flow, just too much out of
the sky to be happy outside.

Re: [MBZ] W123 AC - Part 3 Begins

2013-09-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Thats it, I'm done searching forever...

I tried Amazon and all I could get was
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005RUTVIK/ref=biss_dp_t_asn in a pack of 10 for $18
plus shipping.

I wouldn't mind buying 10 if I KNEW it would fit but this is me measuring an
old dried out o-ring...

Are there not some upgrades to electrical beasties related to engines and
transmissions going from the 300SDL 603 to the 350SDL 603?

Generally, the plan is to do a motor swap, the 603 from my 300SDL into
Wilton`s 350. I hope that the transmission is the same? Or else the whole
 thing is going in. :)

Other than that I am curious about the condition of Wilton's engine, can
anyone recommend any diagnostics? Seems a shame to scrap it if it is easy
to fix, but I also don't want to blow a weekend troubleshooting only to
 wind up tossing it anyway.
