Once you identify what the true symptoms are, the cause should be evident. Struts/spheres can't be wrong, except for the spheres leaking internally and losing pressure. If new enough, should be good. Struts can leak or rattle, but will always work. Struts need to rest in approximate center position. Car should be level then, but damage and vandalistic parts practices could interfere. Springs only provide _partial_ support. Pressure from pump through valve and into the spheres/struts does the rest. If car sinks due to load, valve will add more pressure to bring it back up to center. Car rises? Reverse. Gravity is expected to do the job. Valve has a base (resting) pressure setting. If that was broken, _and_ you had too-strong springs the car might sit at the correct height, or even high, and you wouldn't have the hydraulic system doing much at all that it should be doing. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] sls troubles
If the springs are too strong / too tall, and the pump cannot provide more than base pressure (cannot lift the rear when loaded), then the springs are carrying more weight than designed. Therefore the system is not balanced, with a bias toward the springs carrying the weight. Andrew's load test may have shown that the pump is weak and unable to provide sufficient pressure to lift a load. First step is to ensure the correct springs are installed, I think the system needs to be bled at the strut connections, the pump pressure is now suspect in my mind, and finally the valve can be adjusted and proper operation validated. Re: [MBZ] 123 fog lights
i had to replace a fog light in our '85, and it was a sealed beam. i'm fairly certain it was a plug-in deal. quotes for replacements were rather high a few years ago, and i heard a story about how there was something used in the manufacture of them that had since been qualified as a hazardous material and that was why they now cost so much. IIRC, this related specifically to the yellow ones (which i thought started somewhere around 1982). i was lucky enough to find a decent replacement at a local MBZ shop. were i to need to replace one again, i would give serious consideration to just wiring in a set of small modern lamps, but i'd miss the look of those old yellow things. cheers! e On 23/Apr/14 09:16, Curt Raymond wrote: Gerry, I've never seen a 123 with sealed beam fog lights. Re: [MBZ] 123 fog lights
Curt / Gerry, Not sure how you're meaning sealed beam. My 1983 300D has yellow fog lights that look just like the dual beam headlight, only they are yellow for fog. There is no removable bulb, etc. in them, just what I'd call a sealed beam unit. I see them occasionally on eBay for sale and they are generally somewhat expensive, at least compared to the $9.00 I paid a few years ago for the dual beam hi/lo headlight. Now my 1980 has driving lights that are under the bumper and they are bulbs inside a shielded case assembly, and they are clear for driving, not yellow for fog. Hi Jim, I double checked the lights - they are not working in any situation - I am 100% sure they worked with the high and low beams on as well as the Park lights only on. I hadn't considered both bulbs being bad - I'll pull the bulbs and see if I am getting 12V to them. I wonder what might cause both bulbs to fail without any notice from the Light out sensor? I'll take a look at the wiring diagram also... Thanks for the suggestion - LarryT 91 300D On 4/22/2014 9:29 AM, Jim Cathey wrote: no lights, no warning of failed bulbs, nothing - just no fog lights. Re: [MBZ] sls troubles
It is one of the knockoffs but quite stout. I bought it from a guy around here who had used it to put lower springs on a 560SEC. I used it on the SD when i did the front suspension last summer. The only problem with it is that when it bottoms out the threads did not engage the bottom so I ended up having to go to an autoparts store to borrow their external compressors to pull it in enough to get the bottom plate holder engaged to the screw. I had to crank on it a bit to do that, was a bit scary but once engaged it worked fine. I had uncompressed the spring as much as i could after removing it, and hit that problem. On the other side I did not uncompress it all the way, it worked fine. Curt, Just called the FLAPS manager and explained the problem. He checked and said I had been sold replacement bulbs for mounted driving lights instead of the correct ones which are sealed beam. My '83 240D also has sealed beams. I don't understand why you would have bulb in housing lights while I have sealed beam. Perhaps yours are considered driving lights rather than fog lights. Mine are inboard of the sealed beam headlights and part of the same assembly. Gerry 4/23/2014 12:16 PM, Curt Raymond wrote: Gerry, I've never seen a 123 with sealed beam fog lights. Re: [MBZ] I'm not even sure poos could fix this
Turpentine on a rag, outside. Wipe it down, scrub it, whatever, to get the old nasty stuff off (if indeed it is oil and not varnish or shellac). You can then put on more oil (tung oil or boiled linseed oil) or a Watco danish oil which is more like a varnish that you wipe on. You wipe it on, let it sit a few minutes, then wipe off the excess and let it dry. You will want to do several coats, maybe a day in between but not a lot longer. After a coat or two you might want to hit it with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper to take out the nibs, last time put on a thinned coat (mix in some of that turpentine), let it dry, then use some steel wool and paste wax to buff it up, let it sit a few minutes then buff with a soft cloth. Will look awesome. Or just give it to me. --R On 4/23/14 10:32 AM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote: I have a deep red Danish mid century rosewood coffee table. It has an oil finish, which is dull in places. Andrew Strasfogel wrote: Is there a way to test the pump for sufficient pressure? Is this even plausible? It doesn't leak and the fluid circulates. So how is there a problem? If fluid is being returned to the filter under the reservoir cap, I would feel safe in concluding that the pump is forcing fluid through the valve, and therefore the pump isn't the problem. Re: [MBZ] 123 fog lights
Kaleb, I have the originals in my 1983 300D plus a spare set I purchased on eBay about 12 years ago. Both are sealed beam. What makes you think it is aftermarket? Maybe it's the difference between US and Euro like the headlights on a 1980 300SD that people debate over which one looks best or gives the best visibility. I bought a new '80 240D; had it 18 years before uninsured motorist on ragged pickup totaled it. Don't remember ever replacing fog bulb in it. The lamp is like a large bulb with vacuum or some kind of gas sealed inside. When they first came out in the _(40s-50s?) there was a small bulb inside the sealed lamp. Later there was no bulb; just the filament inside the large lamp. There are three prongs on the back that plug into the typical three prong female plug. OK, who here bought a 123 new, and kept it long enough to have to replace a fog lamp (bulb)? Wilton? There's rarely a need for fog lights, so how would you ever wear one out? With that in mind, why is it that you never seem to see original yellow fog lamps on used W123s advertised for sale? Re: [MBZ] 123 fog lights
Mitch, I purchased my 1983 300D from the grandson of the original owner who lived in South Carolina. It has the original headlight/fog light assemblies. I have replaced a couple of hi/lo beam headlights, but the yellow fog lights are still original as they rarely get used. They have the same rear plug as the headlight. As I said in another post, about 12 years ago I purchased a spare set of headlight assemblies to include the side turn lights and the yellow fog lights on eBay. I still have the spare set in a box as I have never needed them. I also have a spare set of front lights for my 1980 300SD. I'm not much on spare belts and fuses, but I like to have spare headlights and taillight assemblies in case some goober backs into me in the parking lot :-) Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. [MBZ] 1882 300 td sls troubles and finally repairs!!
Folks, Today my helper and i spent a couple of hours working on my sls on the 300TD. First we siphoned the fluid out of the reservoir. Then we removed and washed the crud out of it and dried it thoroughly. We jacked the car way up with a floor jack on each side and backed the jacks up with jack stands and removed the spheres. I did the screwdriver test and the screwdriver goes all the way to the back of the unit on the old ones and on the new ones, it stops after about an inch ... gently on the new. I installed the new ones and the high pressure line wouldn't screw in on the driver' side. I removed the sphere and the threads were obviously buggered up. I had a cheap $9 HF tap die set that had a 1/4 inch, i think, pipe tap. I tried it in one of the old units and it fit, so i chased the threads easily in the new one. I reinstalled it and it went in with little difficulty. We started up and tested for leaks and we were golden. So, i drove the car home and it now rides like an er ... mercedes, not like a buckboard wagon. After i parked it, even after about 4 or 5 hours the car REMAINED AT DRIVING HEIGHT and didn't seem to be squatting down as it has been. I didn't do any tests for up and down, but i suspect all is well. So, i conclude that the spheres are responsible for more than just the ride quality. The sls control valve seems to be weeping a very little bit. I wiped it down and i'll watch it. If any of you have a rebuildable sls control valve for a 123, i'll buy it, just so i can build one and then just do a swap. It looks like a bear to remove ... lots of small high pressure steel lines. So that was all good. Then i came home and noticed that AAPL (Apple stock) went down a couple of $$ but then in after hours trading it jumped up $44 or so. I read that they announced some results and more importantly, that they are going to do a $30 billion stock buy back and also split the stock 7/1 or however you write that crazy investor news. thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
