Lets put this one to rest finally please. It has a history of a head problem which was shown by overheating. Prior to the head problems it DID NOT OVERHEAT. Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Overheating 240D more info
Theres been a lot of history tossed around thats been incorrect, some people have even suggested that I never drove the car but somehow got it after the problem developed which is totally incorrect. I wanted to remind the group again that the problem whatever it is, is still a relatively recent phenomena. Yes relatively recent, we're talking about nearly a 3 year saga here but the car sat with nothing happening for most of that time. The original overheat that started everything would have been December 2012, the beginning of the problem was April 2013 as was HeadgasketQ. I didn't touch the car from September 2013 when I got the Jetta until November 2014 when I delivered it to Dimitri. Now that I write that out, the ease that I had in starting it in November 2014 is kind of startling. I charged the battery, cleaned the occasionally sticky IP linkages (good thing too, they were stuck), held the glowplug button for 60 seconds, hit the go pedal three times, cranked for maybe 10 seconds and it was running. It wouldn't idle for another maybe 10 seconds but after that it was good. Oh, I had to add some air to the tires too and bounce against the stuck brakes (or whatever) a couple times before it would actually move... -Curt From: fmiser via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Wednesday, March 4, 2015 2:09 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Fwd: Overheating 240D more info Mountain Man wrote: Why is there a hurry to do more work? Re: [MBZ] Facts
IMNSHO the problem is one group's attempt to control morality and illegal behavior by controlling a thing, i.e. the guns, instead of focusing on the actual behavior of the small number of misbehaving individuals. For example, some nut-job shoots up a movie theater and the response from some is to try to ban the tool that he used rather than advocate for more mental health programs to deal with the cause of the shooting. As Dan said, there is a need for more mental health resources for those that need it. In so doing, the controls advocated by the ban group infringe on the rights of the vast majority that do not exhibit the criminal behavior thus setting up this endless discussion. All those laws did not deter this individual from breaking them. Dan, A note of thanks for your even handed moderation of this discussion. Airframe and Power plant mechanic so I've driven a few thousand rivets. The rivet gun with a feather trigger permits you to drive the rivet without over driving it.. The stun gun body shop hammer used for cutting metal and such lacks the finer control to drive rivets in aluminum.. I suggest you get some aluminum scraps that are as near the composition to the boats material as you can get and practice driving rivets .. observe what works, and what doesn't.. you also may want to moderate the air pressure to the rivet gun to get the stroke you need to upset the rivet properly.. Also important is the bucking bar you use to back the driver.. how you hold it.. it's weight and surface all play into the compression of the rivet to make it fill the hole and grip the pieces being joined.. Looking online shows me that there are kits available with air hammers and different sized rivet tools and bucking bars etc. Some are advertised as being 2X or 3X or 4X and it appears that indicates something about power available as the bigger number appears to indicate an ability to do bigger rivets. Anyone know more about that? Secondly, they talk about feather triggers? What are they telling me? I assume, just that one can control the gun a bit better and it is not going to be either on or off. Is there much of a difference between an air hammer intended for riveting vs normal ones that we use to cut off a muffler etc? Re: [MBZ] WAS Facts - NEW OT Riveting
I'm not an AP, but have played one for most of my life. To clarify what Grant said, the feather trigger lets you modulate the hammering action from a stroke every second to very fast. You start by setting the rivet in place with a few slow strokes, then enough fast strokes to get it to the finished state. The 2X, 3X, 4X, etc. relates to the length of each stroke, hence the power to mash ever increasing sizes and hardness's of rivets. IIRC, boats often use larger rivets than I've dealt with in most of my aircraft work, but they were often softer as well. I doubt that you need more than a 3X rivet gun. This is the gun I bought recently, and it works just fine: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/rivetset737.php?clickkey=1985735 It has everything you need except and air compressor and the rivets (which you can find here: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/solidalumrivets2.php). Thanks, Grant. I had skin in that game, as I had a family member who required hospitalization on a couple of occasions for mental health issues. Fortunately for them at the time it was pre-Reagan dismantling of public health services and they were able to get the care and attention they needed for proper treatment. I'm pleased to say that they are and have been a contributing member of our society as a result of this and other resources that were available at the time. I work in an urban area where there are many homeless folks. I'm sure some are there because they choose to be, but a fair number of them are clearly in need of mental health services that just don't exist. While none that I have seen appear to be a threat to society, I often wonder about those we *don't* see who are living on the fringes and have or could be identified as being in need of such services. Re: [MBZ] Facts
The issue as I see it is that the genie is already out of the bottle, and you can't put it back. There are too many guns already in circulation to effectively reduce access to them, so stop trying to. Yes, mental health is a major issue that gets ignored. However, relying on identifying and treating potential violent offenders is also fraught with it's own set of horrors. Who decides who get locked you for treatment when? The statistics regarding the number of guns, number of citizens, and frequency of shootings rather nullifies the need to carry a gun for personal or even group defense. The likelihood of ever needing to use one is extremely small, unless you like to put yourself in harms way. If you look at the recent reporting of shootings, if we want to reduce the gun violence rate, we need to dis-arm the police. Of course, a lot of this is due to what's being reported when. Local shootings didn't get reported nationally in the '50's and 60's. On Wed, Mar 4, 2015 at 1:24 PM, Addison Thompson via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: IMNSHO the problem is one group's attempt to control morality and illegal behavior by controlling a thing, i.e. the guns, instead of focusing on the actual behavior of the small number of misbehaving individuals. Re: [MBZ] Facts
You do know that the mental health system, such as it was, was dismantled under Reagan because that is what mental health advocates wanted -- they believed that the system as it was violated the rights of mentally ill people by forcing them into treatment or hospitals or whatever, against their will. So Reagan et al. gave them what they wanted, rights for the mentally ill to decide what they wanted or needed. So now we have mentally ill people with their rights who can't get the treatment they need, or who refuse it because it is their right to do so, and live on the streets and damage themselves and others with their freedom. Of course, no one saw that one coming... --R On 3/4/15 5:37 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: Thanks, Grant. I'm pleased to say that they are and have been a contributing member of our society as a result of this and other resources that were available at the time. Just as the attempt at alcohol prohibition didn't stop the use of alcohol but enabled the growth of organized crime syndicates, the war on drugs has enabled the growth of even more powerful drug cartels. I've never used drugs and haven't even tried a marijuana cigarette but can see the futility of the path we've been on since LBJ. I would suggest that there are people suffering from advanced alcoholism who can fare no better, nor are functional in any sense of the word. It's a tomato - tomatoe thing. In either case the severity of the affliction is clearly evident. As addled as their brains might be, I would posit that they're in far better health than someone suffering from advanced alcoholism... However, I am neither doctor nor a medical researcher, and this boils down to a matter of semantics. Neither conditions are acceptable from a standpoint of quality of life. Given the choice I would rather my brain be addled than my liver trashed, but that's merely a matter of personal preference. Having seen a family member die of advanced liver disease brought on by alcoholism, I found it a horrible, lingering, painful way to die that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I'm not sure anyone has died from marijuana abuse/ingestion, and if they have, it was probably due to excessive consumption of food (munchies.) Since you brought it up I have had partial hearing loss in my left ear since I was a child, due mainly to some really nasty inner ear infections I had. The frequencies affected are between 5kHz and 7kHz or thereabouts, smack dab in the middle of the range for normal speech. I would love to have some sort of hearing aid or assistive device. While I can hear, the lack of hearing in this range makes it pretty much impossible for me to carry on a conversation with anyone in an environment with a lot of background noise, like a loud restaurant or at a party. If you speak to me in one of these places I can see your lips move but I can't hear a damned thing you say. It's frustrating and isolating. Insurance has never covered hearing aids. Why I can buy insurance for vision, just about any other assistive device for any deficiencies I have as a human, but not hearing aids. This is one of the reasons we changed over to Costco. We have short circuited Darwinian evolution. Shoes have messed with our feet so we have daintier toes and less ability to walk long distances. This may be a first world thing. We impregnate the couples or singles who are genetically incapable of producing a child naturally. We pump people full of poison to survive cancer and live to reproduce. We put helmets on kids that would have taken themselves out of the gene pool on a bike, or climbing rocks. We pad and coddle the beasties, and pump up their self esteem until they are narcissist. The meals we eat are pretty unnatural with all the preservatives, and most folks would starve if they had to cook, let alone source food stuffs. We zip along at 120kph, which, should we meet sudden deceleration, would turn us into pulp. No chance of that using shanks mare. At every opportunity, big pharma is plumping us up with chemical concoctions that short circuit immune responses and have side effects that cause more damage than the illness. All the antibiotics are creating super bugs that will decimate populations, while our natural immune systems are being robbed of the chance to fight and pass on resistance to pathogens. Meanwhile we get in airborne tin cans and spread virulent bacteria and virus to the far reaches of the globe. Global food and commerce is turning native populations in the clients for big pharma to pump full of chemicals to treat first world illness. Time to slow down, move back to the land, and allow our bodies to catch up to changes already here. Either that. or we start stuffing folks in tin cans and shoot them into space in great enough numbers that natural selection will sort out what manner of human is best suited to off world living. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers On Mar 4, 2015, at 5:52 PM, Mountain Man via Mercedes wrote: OK Don wrote: The war on alcohol addiction hasn't had any positive results either. They are beyond out of touch. They are mindless zombies who can't put together a simple sentence in words. Nothing I said dismisses the effects of terminal alcoholism, but that subject was not addressed. The statement was made that potheads are way better than alkies, and I take issue with that statement. Some alcoholics can function at some level, and are often entertaining, and generally can string together words to make a sentence. The whacked out pothead zombies can do none of those things. It is not better I've never been to Hawaii, but I have seen the results of a lifetime of pot smoking with a couple of people. I would concur that they were pretty much out of touch, but they looked a lot better than the alcoholics I've seen dying of cirrhosis of the liver... Dan, I totally agree that we need to try another direction than the so-called war on drugs. I've been saying for decades that the war on drugs has been lost and has become a huge financial drain on our society. Rather than keeping on locking people up, inducing them to commit more crimes to fund their habits, making drug cartels rich, etc., we need to at least investigate some other possible ways to control drug use. Just as the attempt at alcohol prohibition didn't stop the use of alcohol but enabled the growth of organized crime syndicates, the war on drugs has enabled the growth of even more powerful drug cartels. Yes, many in the mental health systems saw that one coming, but they didn't have a voice in Washington. What the mental health professionals wanted was the closing of the massive institutions, replacing them with smaller ones for acute treatment and outpatient clinics. I've never had a cigarette in my mouth, but I've inhaled way too much of the crap exhaled (imposed on me) by others who have always thought they had a right to seriously pollute the air that I needed for basic life. I think I like the sweet smell of cured tobacco, the few times I have caught a whiff of the stuff. Reading your story made me think that the smell at the auction probably was quite pleasant? Sweet? I grew up in suburban Chicago so I never knew manual labor in tobacco fields that your stories tell, so... I don't know tobacco at all - just a few whiffs here and there, and the smoke, which was *never* absolutely abysmal, and I never inhaled or smoked cigarettes. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 112, Issue 30
On the subject of drug use or alcohol use.. as wise man once told me Self abuse is still the most popular form of self entertainment. It seems to ring true with every addiction, regardless of the material of choice.. A great part of the land mass of Arizona is Indian Reservation ... a very drunk Hopi once told me... as I tried to assist him out of the middle of a busy street where he had decided to take a nap, that With the first drink, the spirit comes out of the bottle into the man.. every drink after that the spirit comes out of the man into the bottle. ... I'm pretty sure this mans bottle was full of spirit... Yet another ruined life.. I think we need to offer a surrender in the war on drugs ... we lost. I'm not sure anyone has died from marijuana abuse/ingestion, and if they have, it was probably due to excessive consumption of food (munchies.) Nothing I said dismisses the effects of terminal alcoholism, but that subject was not addressed. I very much agree with the personal responsibility aspect, too. [MBZ] OT: Props to Chrysler
The other night I was hauling the snowmobile trailer and the tail lights quit. The brake and turn signals still worked. I only had a little ways to go so I didn't think much of it. Today I discovered the pinched wire and fix the problem, although the rear marker lights won't work again until they get a new wire I figure I'll get through this season and then the trailer needs a full rebuild anyway. The thing I want to give Chrysler props for is that the running lights on the trailer are on a circuit breaker not a fuse so even with a dead short I never lost driving lights on the truck and didn't blow a fuse which made figuring out the actual problem that much easier... -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Big engine parts?
I'd weld a cast iron manifold. Grind a v along the crack. Get SS rod, and whale away. THe trick is using the SS rod on a stick welder. Which makes me think its actually the exhaust manifold. There was great comment in the meeting over the possibility of welding cast iron. One guy, a professional welder, says he does it all the time so they're going to try welding first. -Curt From: Max Dillon dillonm...@gmail.com To: Curt Raymond curtlud...@yahoo.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, March 3, 2015 9:09 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Big engine parts? Yes . You can easily regulate the temps to the 180 to 190 range with the cardboard. Cold running wears hard on the engine. Fred Moir.Lynn MA.Diesel preferred. If the engine runs hundreds of miles north to Maine and back with no heating problem, why not leave it? Thermostat being blocked open isn't a terrible thing, is it? A bit of coolant leak is not as bad as an oil leak, is it? Run it as is and watch things closely. You drove it to Maine and back, no problem. It drives around town today, why not leave things as they are? Is there a hurry to fix? When you have mayonnaise oil... yeah, then there needs to be a fix sometime soon.
