It's phantom load.
And transformers draw about half of full load power all the time, you can tell
by the fact that they're still warm when not in use.
Switching power supplies, not so much. All my cell phones have come with
switching power supplies since about 2006.

I need to get some USB outlets and power them through my Kill-A-Watt, also need
to meter my GFCI outlets.

Negligible, if that.

Can you produce for your own use?

Or put another way, if you have the power co pull the meter and cut

Or how long would it be until the gestapo makes you take em down.
Maybe ALCLU would provide you a lawyer.

Hawaii has lotsa people who live off grid. Not much on Oahu, but on
Hawaii and other islands, off grid is not unusual. The utilities are

What about the lobbyists for the power utilities who get laws passed

I was just going to go find my Kill-A-Watt and check my charger but I can't
find the dang Kill-A-Watt... Not where I left it anyway.
At camp our inverter has 2 USB ports that are powered even when the inverter is
off. Each USB port draws 0.25a when charging. The inverter draws 0.50a when its
on but not loaded and 0.01a when its off and nothing is using the USB ports,
all of that is at 12v.
I need to spend some time with my 12v USB charger and see if its more efficient
than the inverter. I also want to wire up a switch box with 2x switched 12v
ports, we were forever short of charging capacity with 5 guys each having a
phone and a tablet plus the 4G hotspot which really wants to be plugged in most
of the time if its in use. I also want to put a switch on the inverter.
Apparently when inverters fail its accompanied by a fireball. I disconnected
the inverter when we left, didn't want to get to camp in the spring to find
only charcoal.

Its an interesting idea but I don't have any outlets where one would be handy
for my phone. Our house is older and the outlets are almost all down low so the
normal length of USB cables would make them a waste of time.
The charger that came with my Moto X is about the best I've ever had, 2x USB
ports which will both charge my Nook tablet which hates most generic chargers.
Its high powered (2a each port) so stuff charges fast. I've got it on a power

I believe I am correct in saying the Spanish company totally invested in
the focused reflector/hot salt , heat exchange to steam turbine generator
system of "solar power"

Huge up front investment required for each installation. Gigantic reliance
on government grants to fund those installations all over the world..

In each case... cost overruns out the wazzz, [government project,
right?] and once completed... VERY poor return per sunlight/electricity.
Goals vs Result = Failure to produce.

I may be painting with an overly broad brush, but I believe it to be the
picture. Spanish government is broke and pulled continuation of grants..
Other worldwide installations/government grants ran out, were not
extended..

Bankruptcy follows because it cost more to make power than power is
produced.

[MBZ] 124 Rear LCA

2015-12-04 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

On the "new" 300D, the left rear LCA has a loose joint at the
outside. This is the bushing in the wheel carrier.Has anyone
successfully replaced this? I took the wheel carriers to the local
alignment shop before, but don't have that here. The official tool
is something like $225, and I don't want to spend that much.

Ja, I know, Dave M, has done it, but he has the official tool, and
more money to spend on cars than I do.

I'm wondering if it can be done properly with a bolt and sockets.

Spent yesterday replacing the rear subframe bushings. I'm getting
pretty good at it. No special tools, just jackstands and a good
floor jack. (also hammer and small chisel, and a screwdriver type
HF prybar) The new ones were Boge in Lemforder boxes from
RMEuropean. I think I could do it in may 2 hours next time.

This time I coated the new parts with soapy water, then ran a bead
of dawn around the leading edge. That worked much better, or the
Boge parts were a better fit than the last time.

I did four of those outer joints with the Sir Tools junk tool, I think that
was about $100 or less. Be very careful if you get that tool, their steel
is soft and the slightest misalignment will destroy the tool (the brake
heat shield needs to be bent out of the way and then bent back). I have
read of people bodging up a makeshift tool with sockets and washers and
all-thread, I think it was on the Peach Parts forum.

I used caster oil as a lubricant for the rubber on steel movement (front
LCA inner bushings), that seemed to work well. I believe Curt recommended
that?

or heavily restrict point-of-use. About the only way it's been gotten around is
on a scale of a complete housing development (and quite successfully at that.)

Re: [MBZ] We needa be more like yurp!

2015-12-04 Thread G Mann via Mercedes

Other worldwide installations/government grants ran out, were not
extended..

Bankruptcy follows because it cost more to make power than power is
produced.

moved to this attack. Just a loving couple at home for an evening

Yeahbut, it seems like coming to the US as a refugee is an awful lot of work.
You could come here on a student or other travel visa way easier with much less
inspection. Particularly if you transit through a "friendly" country like Saudi
where you obtain a fake ID. Why would terrorists pursue the most difficult
possible method of entry?

There is no realistic way to keep weapons away from those intent on harming
us. Require registration of kitchen knives, hammers, pressure cookers, cell
phones, diesel fuel and fertilizer?

It is the human hand that is the clear and present danger. It is the
deranged mind in the case of the CO theater shooter. It is the tenets of
fundamental islam that is the fertile ground for violent jihad.

How to find the individuals who can become a danger within a significant
population of muslims? That's not an easy question to answer. Perhaps as we
encourage more to settle in the US we will have more opportunities for
experimentation.

BTW, 2 years of vetting by USDOS and USCIS does not constitute a thorough
check. Ask me how I know this.

Cheap hydraulic press, 12 ton. When I first used it on an AMC rear axle pinion,
about 10 years ago, the supplied assembly bolts failed by blowing past my ear,
going the width of the garden and hitting my neighbors garage with a loud bang!
Replaced the bolts with high quality AMERICAN bolts and no trouble since.
Basically an hydraulic jack in a frame, very useful, if fraught with potential
dangers.
Be safe out there.

Basically an hydraulic jack in a frame, very useful, if fraught with

Re: [MBZ] OT: Slide scanning - Mould on the originals Take 2

2015-12-04 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The one thing you cannot do is rinse them, as the mould has negated
the hardening of the emulsion, and it will wash off where the mold was
present.

Alcohol will remove the varnish on Kodachromes, along with the mould,
but you really need to re-varnish them if possible, it's what keeps
them from fading.

Serious mould repair requires removing the film from the mount and
soaking it in formaldehyde solution to re-harden the emulsion and kill
the fungus, then very careful washing to remove the dead fungus. I
don't recommend this for anything but critical photographs, run of the
mill ones I'd use the dust and scratch removal feature if you have it,
or manually fix them in Photoshop.

I have a ton to work through, luckily the Kodachromes are pretty good
about not growing crud. Agfachromes are the worst (also worst about
fading) and Ektachromes are in the middle.

[MBZ] OT: Slide scanning - Mould on the originals Take 2

2015-12-04 Thread Euan Kennedy via Mercedes

OK, let's try this a third time. AVAST has been messing with my e-mails.

I located a long neglected NIKON LS-2000 a while ago but, like you, was
confounded by the SCSI interface. After a bit of rummaging, I found to
my astonishment that I had acquired somewhere along the line in my
legacy Mac squirreling an exceedingly rare (and now /very /costly) SCSI
converter plug that overcame the need for a SCSI board on my old
PowerMac. The old Macs have gone to the big recycling boneyard but I
still have that converter.

Since then however I've bought a Nikon CoolScan 4000ED which is now
waiting for me to upgrade from the PC darkside to decent recent iMac.

My early scanning experiments with the LS-2000 revealed a problem I
haven't found a fix for yet. A few of my thousands of colour slides are
blighted with mould on the emulsions. I've consulted Dr Google and it
seems that the best fix may be to freeze the slides to kill the mould.
Theoretically, freezing should make it easy to simply brush the dead
mould off, without taking emulsion with it.

I'd really appreciate some advice on this. Have you found a satisfactory
solution to the problem of mouldy slides and negatives?

The thing I like the best is the ability to control contrast, it's
fairly easy to restore faded slides and negatives, and rescue

Another facet of this I find interesting and alarming, Farook had past
contact with suspicious individuals that the FBI was monitoring, but his
contact appeared to stop over a year ago. I'm wondering if that contact
didn't really stop but instead "went dark" because he started communicating
via encrypted means which neither NSA or the FBI could penetrate or
monitor. ISIS/ISIL/Daesh seems very adept at using technology to avoid
detection and monitoring, thank you Edward Snowden.

There is no realistic way to keep weapons away from those intent on harming

It is the human hand that is the clear and present danger. It is the
deranged mind in the case of the CO theater shooter. It is the tenets of
fundamental islam that is the fertile ground for violent jihad.

How to find the individuals who can become a danger within a significant

Re: [MBZ] San Bernardino

2015-12-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
It's not humor, it is basically the same scenario that got our Libyan
ambassador and 3 others killed in Benghazi, right? Some random guys
out for a stroll who had seen a youtube video, and it just randomly set
them off at a random place that just happened to be a secret arms stash
where the ambassador was, to use the RPGs and "assault weapons" they
just happened to be carrying on their evening stroll. That's entirely
believable, right? Our president and SoS and UN ambassador told us it
was so!

We know that global warming climate change disruption is the most
significant existential problem facing us, so it is quite reasonable to
think that a youtube video about global warming climate change
disruption set off these people, and we know that a messianic Jew had
made fun of the guy's beard a coupla weeks before. Tolerance, COEXIST,
and diversity celebrations kinda failed there. You put that together
and why wouldn't it be understandable, as John Kerry said about the
Paris workplace gun violence, for these folks to go off like that and
commit this act of workplace violence? I mean, kids used to make fun of
my hairstyle too, it would be understandable if I went off, right?

It seems like someone else acquired the weapons for them, legally, but
it might be too early to tell. I can go out right now (or do it on my
computer) and buy stuff to make pipe bombs, random commonly-available
chemicals like diesel fuel and fertilizer or other stuff, or propane or
butane or gasoline. Should we all be licensed and investigated to buy
various fuels? Should all farmers pass background checks to get
fertilizer? The most recent Paris guys (or their buddies) cooked up
their own plastique using commonly-available chemicals. I could build
various delivery devices (like the radio-controlled car they had a bomb
on) to do it from afar too, better ban all RC devices or institute
stringent background checks! Or OMG I see 8000gal fuel tankers driving
on our roads, there was one parked at Costco this afternoon! Those
things would make a good boom! Or big LP tankers bring 2000gal right to
my house! OMG! What should I do?

And a neighbor saw several other men coming and going from the garage,
which he thought a bit suspicious but did not want to be racist and jump
to any conclusions about whether they might be up to no good.

Sure does make a difference! Need to replace the rear fuel pump in
the wagon and the front wheel bearings and I'll be in the same

I found lots of sand and small sea shells in the covers on the rear

2015-12-04 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

Power _conversion_ is never 100% efficient. In most of
these types of power supplies, the converted power is always
available, whether you're using it or not. That's why I
like things with true power switches.

There is essentially no magnetic field around an unused
household outlet, because there's no power _flow_. (There
is no H field, though there is an E field.) The EM losses
do add up, which is why they've got extreme-voltage DC lines
for long distance. The cost/losses of converting to/from HVDC
are less than the parasitic (E-field and H-field) losses of AC,
over the distances and power levels concerned.

Fascinating stuff. Or totally boring, depending on your point
of view.

Curt:

Even the State Dept. has some sensible rules: They do not normally issue visas
"out of district". If you reside in Pakistan, for example, the consulate in
Jeddah will tell you to return to Islamabad to get your student visa. If you
claim to be a refugee from Syria you don't need identity documents to apply for
refugee status. The interviews you would undergo through this procedure will be
conducted by those who are primed to want to believe that all you want is a
secure life for your family, just like us.

I remember seeing clips of Lester Holt talking to one of the "refugees" saying
he understands perfectly since he is a father too. So I guess Lester must fully
understand Mr. Farook, since Farook was a father too.

It takes a lot of exposure to people of different cultures to understand that
in some cases their value and belief systems are very different from ours.

You could come here on a student or other travel visa way easier with much less

There is no realistic way to keep weapons away from those intent on harming
us. Require registration of kitchen knives, hammers, pressure cookers, cell

BTW, 2 years of vetting by USDOS and USCIS does not constitute a thorough

Andrew NO I wish to re-direct your thought logic. Over the past 60
years of being always in the company of loaded weapons, I have NEVER had
one come out of it's rack and assault me of it's own volition, ever.. Nor
has anyone else.

Do spoons in your drawer in the kitchen make you fat? Does food being
easily available at the supermarket force you to eat it? No. In both
examples, it requires you to make the conscience decision to use that item.
In the case of Muslim Violence, in California, and in Paris, and in the
27,000 other places since 9/11, individuals made the decision to use
violence against innocent people, not always with a gun.

Manufacture of a pipe bomb, such as were used in this instance [many such
bombs] is a FEDERAL CRIME... Did that deter these individuals from using
Muslim Violence? No.

If you care to educate and understand, for yourself, exactly the foundation
principles of islam, it is just such violent acts. 1,436 years worth of
them, millions killed.

"Gun control" has no meaning, other than to provide more unarmed victims
for the next attack.

Rant off...

I would point out that despite the erroneous and inaccurate statements in the
press, Snowden's revelations had nothing to do with any of this.

Terrorists and other such folks have been "dark" long before the Snowden
information came out. For that matter, this was well known and understood by
both sides even before 9/11.

I would point out also that the recent attack in Paris was planned and
discussed over open, unencrypted channels. Unfortunately, it's such a huge
amount of traffic to look at there's almost no way to separate things out from

Re: [MBZ] We needa be more like yurp!

2015-12-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
We were in Spain a few years back and driving around here and there, and
at one point on the autobahn or whatever they call it, I see a sign for
Something Nuclearismo or some such, and sure enough a coupla km down the
road we pass a nuke just kinda sitting out in the middle of nothing. It
had fences and all, but not much else anywhere around. They also had
solar panels stuck all over the place and wind machines, most of which
were not spinning. At some place we passed a construction project where
they were building another high-speed train line, not sure where it was
coming from or going to, or how the sparsity of population centers out
that way would provide any reasonable revenues (not that that was
probably a goal).

My daughter did a semester there, and said the whole place was kinda
sad, really high unemployment among the younger people, no particular
view of the future.

Other worldwide installations/government grants ran out, were not
extended..

Bankruptcy follows because it cost more to make power than power is
produced.

From an industrial and solar perspective, Germany is more comparable to
the U.S. than Spain, and their installed solar base is significant and
expanding. It will be interesting to see how their plans to continue going
heavily solar/wind work out; assuming that another Schicklgruber* doesn't
arise from their growing Nazi-like parties.

2015-12-04 Thread clay via Mercedes
The back country hill folk Scots Irish were transported or came as indentured
service. When George and his boys were emancipated, the less desirable people
ended up down under. In the south, the scots tended to not like the english,
so kept moving west to get away from them. Holler by holler the rural areas
were populated. Much turmoil under the Stuart kings, and residue when George
I ascended the throne that kept unhappy people finding safer grounds in America.

You could come here on a student or other travel visa way easier with much less

inspection. Particularly if you transit through a "friendly" country like Saudi
where you obtain a fake ID. Why would terrorists pursue the most difficult
possible method of entry?

It is the human hand that is the clear and present danger. It is the
deranged mind in the case of the CO theater shooter. It is the tenets of
fundamental islam that is the fertile ground for violent jihad.

How to find the individuals who can become a danger within a significant
population of muslims? That's not an easy question to answer. Perhaps as we
encourage more to settle in the US we will have more opportunities for
experimentation.

BTW, 2 years of vetting by USDOS and USCIS does not constitute a thorough

Now that I have proven that a tach signal exists before it goes into

Does anyone know which pin on the KLIMA is the pin for the tach

If the signal exists at both places, then the problem os pretty much

I checked the tach signal at the battery box. With a low idle I got
about 3V with the fluke on AC, the V reading went up proportionately
with the speed, so I pronounced the signal good. Looks like I need
to figger out how to change the capacitor Jim referred to.

Thanks much to Fred, Max, Jim, and others. Where to find that plug
and how to check it was good info!

Fred was the source for the wire by the battery, I remember it is a
two-wire connector but I don't remember the colors. My wiring diagram says
one wire is white, other is brown with a yellow stripe.

Check the connection for the Hall effect pickup at the rear of the

engine. It often gets corroded, being exposed to road splash, and
gives an intermittent or very low signal. Mine works (as does the
idle speed control) only when it's wet, never have gotten around to
 fixing it.

Might be a bad hall effect pickup, it's in the bell housing above
the starter if I remember correctly.

Well, it I poke around with the fluke on AC and find a 3 v terminal,
that would be it, I guess. I could start with the T and then check
86 and 87 to verify.

Faster than waiting 3-4 weeks for a chinee oscil kit to show up. I
am not set up for desolder/resolder lectronics repair like Jim is.

The question is: What controls the idle speed? I know there is the
EDS plug on the IP, and the dealie on the firewall with the numbers
to set the idles speed. BTW, i checked it today, and it is set up to
7 (of 7) so no help there. I'm guessing the tach signal goes into
the computer and then it sends a signal to the dealie on the firewall
could be a bad computer. If no signal at the KLIMA and no signal at
the tach, but we know the tach signal is good going into the
computer, then maybe the computer is bad.

Can't help you on the pins but I would suggest getting one of the
cheap little oscilloscope kits. $30 or less delivered to your door
by a certified agent of the United States gummint from a variety of
chinee vendors, a bit of soldering and you have a useful little
tool., good enough for car work.

[MBZ] Easiest fix

2015-12-04 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Last night, for the first time in 20 years, the Genie overhead door started
stopping midway, backing up, and generally misbehaving.
Using the 'net and the very complete manual that came with the Genie, I guessed
that the trouble was in the little unit that ran up and down the long screw,
pushing and pulling the door open and closed.
Opening and closing the door by hand is not easy since the the long spring that
helps support the door had weakened over time and the door was "heavy" to raise
and lower by hand.
There was a little bit left in an old can of WD-40 that my wife had used to
remove sticky labels, so I squirted it in the little unit and the motor/screw
area, crossed my fingers, and hit the button.

Voila! It opened the door normally and did so as well today. I don't expect
that fix to last, so I'll order another small unit and hope that the trouble
wasn't in the motor/screw area.
Many people poo poo WD-40, but it definitely gave me time to do a better fix
later.

The "dealie" on the firewall is a resistor array, it just tells the
computer what speed to set. The computer reads the idle speed and
move the rack via the solenoid at the back of the IP to get the speed
required, and the other electrical connection on the front top of the
IP is the rack position sensor, which tells the computer if the rack
is moving.

Pull the instrument cluster and test the signal at the Tachometer, same
test procedure as you have used for the pick-up sensor.

Disconnect the solenoid at the back of the injection pump and the idle
should fall to the mechanical setting of about 500 RPM. There is a
mechanical idle adjustment on the back of the IP, loosen the lock nut and
turn the shaft to increase the idle to ~750 RPM. Leave the solenoid
disconnected, the only thing you loose is an increased idle speed when the
engine is cold and when you engage the AC compressor. I've managed to live
without both for about a decade.

The engine RPM signal to the KLIMA comes from a different pin on the EDS
computer than the signal for the tachometer function. In other words,
presence or lack of a signal at the KLIMA may not tell you anything about
the presence or lack of a signal at the tachometer.

There is a 3/4" rod running through the springs. I don't see a cable.
I'll try to find new springs at Lowes. Probably best since the springs are
quite rusty.
Thanks,
Gerry

OK, I checked the t here on cars. The newest one I got from Q is
crimped and has 4 screws on the front, the one on the heap is the
same. The one on the "new" 300D has no screws.

SO: ALL are crimped. The BAD ones are flat front. The GOOD ones
have screws on the front.

The bad one I need to replace is the bad kind, and the used one I got
today is the newer "good" kind.

Ah grasshopper, you miss the obvious. they are all infidels.

Andrew sez: By all accounts from his co-workers, he was a quiet guy
who raised no

suspicions, reasonably sociable, and a model employee who won awards for
his work as a health inspector. No one had a clue he was capable of
committing such an atrocity. My theory is that the fiancee entered the
country with plans for an attack. It isn't clear what the strategic
advantage was from choosing this target, which was a virtual United Nations
of diverse individuals from many countries and religions.

Here's what I found on Clay Electrics website:

"Member Generated Power
Seminole Electric Cooperative, Inc., through Clay Electric, will purchase
electricity generated and delivered to Clay Electric from any of its members'
qualifying small photovoltaic systems of 100kW or less, under the provisions of
section 25 of the (PDF)

Looks like Clay Electric is one of the few power companies in Florida that buy
back excess solar power.
