Re: [MBZ] Craig is a bigger man than I am

2017-06-17 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Well, at least we can say he has real trucks, the the little shovey toy
truck.

Some of us were aware of these steps, or at least some/most of them
Craig and his bride have taken.

Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
June 17, 2017 at 8:07 PM
So this morning I rolled into the Craig Casa Del Rancho to drop off
his new 2.5 turbo, and load up his long time 240D 3.0 to take it back
to Okie Acres home for unloved Benz's. Upon arrival I was given the
tour of Craig's establishment. They are living in a 10k sqft
commercial warehouse. The office space is converted into living space,
leaving the vast majority wide open. I thought I had a large shop but
mine could fit in the corner of his. I then notice Craig has his very
own Kenworth. Yes that's right. He also has a 53' box trailer to go
with it. All parked inside this massive warehouse. Craig decided
rather than paying a moving company he would just buy his own
equipment. It gets better. Craig also owns a Peterbuilt which they
decided was too small so they bought the Kenworth. So, if anybody
needs a big rig, Craig is your man. So after I got the 240D loaded up
Craig took me for a ride to town in the Peterbuilt to show off his
truck driving skills. As it turn out, unknown to any of us, Craig
actually went to truck driving school a couple of years ago to learn
how to drive his big rigs and got a CDL. Here are a few photos for
your enjoyment.

My friend, Bob Nible, who started a trucking company with one 1976 MB
L1113 truck and built it into a multigenerational enterprise with
several locations, always said the tractor (and driver) COSTS you money,
the trailer MAKES you money.

Either way, Both Craig and Grant get a WAYTAGO! I had 4 or 5 48 '

Barrier type hose is pretty cheap. Only caveat is to make sure fitting

I have one of those mechanical crimp tools that you put in a vice for AC
hoses. Works pretty well. I used it to make up a set for a W108 280SE,
and will probably do the same for my 250S soon.

I think its this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Mastercool-71550-Black-Manual-Crimper/dp/B000WBQ4U2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1497751431=8-1

There are places online that sell the hose by the foot, so you can buy what
you need.

So this morning I rolled into the Craig Casa Del Rancho to drop off his new 2.5
turbo, and load up his long time 240D 3.0 to take it back to Okie Acres home
for unloved Benz's. Upon arrival I was given the tour of Craig's establishment.
They are living in a 10k sqft commercial warehouse. The office space is
converted into living space, leaving the vast majority wide open. I thought I
had a large shop but mine could fit in the corner of his. I then notice Craig
has his very own Kenworth. Yes that's right. He also has a 53' box trailer to
go with it. All parked inside this massive warehouse. Craig decided rather than
paying a moving company he would just buy his own equipment. It gets better.
Craig also owns a Peterbuilt which they decided was too small so they bought
the Kenworth. So, if anybody needs a big rig, Craig is your man. So after I got
the 240D loaded up Craig took me for a ride to town in the Peterbuilt to show
off his truck driving skills. As it turn out, unknown to any of us, Craig
actually went to truck driving school a couple of years ago to learn how to
drive his big rigs and got a CDL. Here are a few photos for your enjoyment.

Key West Declared War on the United States in 1982
The string of islands ‘seceded’ from the Union and became the Conch
Republic

by DARIEN CAVANAUGH

The people of Key West, Florida don’t take kindly to bullies,
especially federal bullies. When Washington blocked the only road to
the mainland, the islanders formed their own nation … then caused a
series of international incidents.

It all started on April 18, 1982, when residents and tourists leaving
the Florida Keys ran into an unexpected delay. Without prior notice,
the U.S. Border Patrol had set up a roadblock and checkpoint on U.S.
Route 1 in front of Skeeter’s Last Chance Saloon in Florida City. It
was the only road out of town.

Although they were not crossing a national border, agents required
U.S. citizens leaving the Keys to verify their citizenship and submit
their vehicles to a search. That’s despite the roadblock not being on
an international border.

The roadblock served to prevent undocumented immigrants from entering
the U.S. through the Keys. The area had seen an influx of immigrants
and refuges from Cuba since the Mariel Boatlift two years earlier. But
Border Patrol agents also used the stops to search for illegal drugs.

The delays often lasted several hours, causing traffic to back up for
up to 19 miles. It was an inconvenience for residents, but more
importantly — it discouraged tourists from visiting the Keys. Tourism
is a large source of income to the islanders … and they were losing
money daily.

“No one in Key West doubted that drugs were trafficked widely in the
Keys by road and by boat” government professor Robert Kerstein wrote
in Key West on the Edge — Inventing the Conch Republic. “But tourism’s
boosters had little tolerance for interruptions to their business.”

Dennis Wardlow — then Key West’s mayor — acted quickly to address the
crisis. He contacted the city’s chief of police, the sheriff of Monroe
County, the district’s Florida State representative and Gov. Bob
Graham to find out who ordered the roadblock and to demand its removal.

None of them knew who called for the barrier, but they all knew they
didn’t have the authority to close it. Wardlow finally contacted the
Border Patrol directly. It didn’t go well.

The captain of the Border Patrol told Wardlow the roadblock was “none
of his business.”

“Don’t tell a Conch it’s none of your business,” the mayor replied,
invoking the nickname of residents of the Keys. The Border Patrol had
unwittingly sown the seeds of rebellion.

Wardlow consulted with his city council, business leaders and tourism
boosters to discuss the federal agency’s “attack on Key West’s
sovereignty.” They decided to seek an injunction from the federal
district court in Miami to get the roadblock removed.

On April 22, a small group of Conchs — including Wardlow and local
attorney and pilot David Paul Horan — flew to Miami. When Miami’s U.S.
District Judge C. Clyde Atkins failed to issue the injunction, he left
the citizens of the Keys with little recourse.

“Tomorrow at noon the Florida Keys will secede from the Union!”
Wardlow announced to reporters gathered on the courthouse steps on his
way out of the building. He and his associates headed home to prepare.

“The first act of rebellion occurred before they had even returned to
Key West,” Kerstein wrote. “Horan, a seasoned pilot, buzzed the
roadblock on their flight back to the island city.”

Back in Key West, Wardlow and his co-conspirators rapidly organized a
new government — albeit a bit tongue-in-cheek. They assigned around 30
officials and civic leaders to new posts such as the secretary of
underwater affairs and the minister of nutrition.

“By establishing that border they have declared us a foreign nation,”
he told reporters. “We’re tired of the U.S. government picking on
little Key West.”

He vowed to negotiate only with Pres. Ronald Reagan or Vice Pres.
George H. W. Bush (Bully-in-Chief). “I guess they think we’re kidding,
and we’re not,” he exclaimed.

i absolutely would get new hose put on the MB fittings after you measure
and cur off the old hose. I grind or saw the ferrules at an angle, then
peel them off, and pull off the hose.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
June 17, 2017 at 10:31 AM
Has anyone ever had hoses rebuilt by a local hose supplier, such as
Amazon? What did it cost?

I am seriously considering taking all of the hoses off of the 350SDL
and having them rebuilt, but I’m wondering if it’s cost effective to
do so rather than replace with new. And I wonder if new (MB) hoses are
barrier style material, too?

A couple of the hoses are around $100/each my cost from MB. I’ve got
to look at the plumbing on the back of the compressor where there are
hard lines and an accumulator, as one setup has hoses that are a part
of this assembly, another doesn’t. I’m not sure which one I have.

With the youngster heading out of town in a week I’ll be able to
dismantle the AC system on the car without too much pressure to get it
back together, so I can take my time and do this right so it will be
good for years to come.

I just saw a 1997 E320 wagon that looks really nice. I might go look
at it and see if it’s worth picking up. One owner, Florida car, 150k
on the clock. Been trying to sell it for a month without a buyer at
$4500. It will be dropping off CL in another day or two….

Been there several times as a kid. Nowhere near as flamboyant as it is now, so
I understand. Pretty beat up, seedy and rough around the edges when I was
there as a kid. I was not impressed. Dad was a big Ernest Hemingway fan, so
we would take day trips down there in the Beechcraft from our place on Sanibel
to visit the Hemingway house and eat at the Turtle Bar.

I remember the beater cars that were all over the island with their keys in the
ignition. If you wanted to go somewhere, you just jumped in, drove to your
destination and parked it for the next person.

Rode the Conch Train and got pictures taken at the southernmost point of the US
as I recall, too.

We used to go on the Navy base there as Dad had a buddy that was stationed
there. Got to see the huge pile of “rafts” (and I use that word loosely) that
the Cubans would use to try and make it across the Straights of Florida. The
Coasties moored there, too, and they would bring these things up on the cutters
and just pile them up on the docks. Boards or pallets lashed to inner tubes,
stuff like that. Scary stuff thinking about going across 60 miles of open
water on one of those. I often wondered how many of them never made it.

"Since the United States has once again declared its sovereignty over Key West;
otherwise known as the Conch Repubic; it has declared war on the United States.

Little is still known about the progress of the war but borders have been
closed and the U.S.Navy is known to be on the way for a suspected invasion.

The Conch Republic has a massive store of ammunition in the form of stale Cuban
bread, so the outcome is anyones guess.

The last attempt of the U.S. to take over the Conch Republic ended in the
defeat of the USA which had set up a roadblock on the only road out of the
Islands:

Key West Declared War on the United States in 1982
The string of islands ‘seceded’ from the Union and became the Conch Republic

by DARIEN CAVANAUGH

The people of Key West, Florida don’t take kindly to bullies, especially
federal bullies. When Washington blocked the only road to the mainland, the
islanders formed their own nation … then caused a series of international
incidents.

It all started on April 18, 1982, when residents and tourists leaving the
Florida Keys ran into an unexpected delay. Without prior notice, the U.S.
Border Patrol had set up a roadblock and checkpoint on U.S. Route 1 in front of
Skeeter’s Last Chance Saloon in Florida City. It was the only road out of town.

Although they were not crossing a national border, agents required U.S.
citizens leaving the Keys to verify their citizenship and submit their vehicles
to a search. That’s despite the roadblock not being on an international border.

The roadblock served to prevent undocumented immigrants from entering the U.S.
through the Keys. The area had seen an influx of immigrants and refuges from
Cuba since the Mariel Boatlift two years earlier. But Border Patrol agents also
used the stops to search for illegal drugs.

The delays often lasted several hours, causing traffic to back up for up to 19
miles. It was an inconvenience for residents, but more importantly — it
discouraged tourists from visiting the Keys. Tourism is a large source of
income to the islanders … and they were losing money daily.

“No one in Key West doubted that drugs were trafficked widely in the Keys by
road and by boat” government professor Robert Kerstein wrote in Key West on the
Edge — Inventing the Conch Republic. “But tourism’s boosters had little
tolerance for interruptions to their business.”

Dennis Wardlow — then Key West’s mayor — acted quickly to address the crisis.
He contacted the city’s chief of police, the sheriff of Monroe County, the
district’s Florida State representative and Gov. Bob Graham to find out who
ordered the roadblock and to demand its removal.

None of them knew who called for the barrier, but they all knew they didn’t
have the authority to close it. Wardlow finally contacted the Border Patrol
directly. It didn’t go well.

The captain of the Border Patrol told Wardlow the roadblock was “none of
his business.”

“Don’t tell a Conch it’s none of your business,” the mayor replied, invoking
the nickname of residents of the Keys. The Border Patrol had unwittingly sown
the seeds of rebellion.

Wardlow consulted with his city council, business leaders and tourism boosters
to discuss the federal agency’s “attack on Key West’s sovereignty.” They
decided to seek an injunction from the federal district court in Miami to get
the roadblock removed.

On April 22, a small group of Conchs — including Wardlow and local attorney and
pilot David Paul Horan — flew to Miami. When Miami’s U.S. District Judge C.
Clyde Atkins failed to issue the injunction, he left the citizens of the Keys
with little recourse.

“Tomorrow at noon the Florida Keys will secede from the Union!” Wardlow
announced to reporters gathered on the courthouse steps on his way out of the
building. He and his associates headed home to prepare.

“The first act of rebellion occurred before they had even returned to Key
West,” Kerstein wrote. “Horan, a seasoned pilot, buzzed the roadblock on their
flight back to the island city.”

Back in Key West, Wardlow and his co-conspirators rapidly organized a new
government — albeit a bit tongue-in-cheek. They assigned around 30 officials
and civic leaders to new posts such as the secretary of underwater affairs and
the minister of nutrition.

“By establishing that border they have declared us a foreign nation,” he
told reporters. “We’re tired of the U.S. government picking on little Key West.”

He vowed to negotiate only with Pres. Ronald Reagan or Vice Pres. George H. W.
Bush (Bully-in-Chief). “I guess they think we’re kidding, and we’re not,” he
exclaimed.

Federal agents arrived to monitor the situation. Wardlow, the newly

Yes. The manifold that bolts to the R4 in my 126 leaked and my local AC guy

[MBZ] Rebuilding AC Hoses

Has anyone ever had hoses rebuilt by a local hose supplier, such as Amazon?
What did it cost?

I am seriously considering taking all of the hoses off of the 350SDL and having
them rebuilt, but I’m wondering if it’s cost effective to do so rather than
replace with new. And I wonder if new (MB) hoses are barrier style material,
too?

A couple of the hoses are around $100/each my cost from MB. I’ve got to look
at the plumbing on the back of the compressor where there are hard lines and an
accumulator, as one setup has hoses that are a part of this assembly, another
doesn’t. I’m not sure which one I have.

With the youngster heading out of town in a week I’ll be able to dismantle the
AC system on the car without too much pressure to get it back together, so I
can take my time and do this right so it will be good for years to come.

I just saw a 1997 E320 wagon that looks really nice. I might go look at it and
see if it’s worth picking up. One owner, Florida car, 150k on the clock. Been

Anaerobic digestion produces hydrogen and methane gas. Since there is no
pentacyclosiloxane in it (the stuff that makes your hair shiny in shampoo and
conditioner) it can be compressed, dried, and burned in either a turbine or
internal combustion engine to run a generator.

Land fill methane is grossly contaminated with siloxanes, so is wastewater
treatment plant methane, so it has to be cleaned up before it's burned, else
you get sand being generated by the combustion of the gas. Pentacyclosiloxane
is carried by methane pretty well, so it's always present in domestic waste.

2017-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Methane is generated in digesters. The methane is used to fuel generators,
typically driven by reciprocating engines that burn the methane.

I guess you could use it to fire a boiler and generate steam, but it’s pretty
low as far as BTU content so I don’t think it would be very efficient used in
that manner.

At least that’s the way I’ve seen it done.

Fuel cells? Burned to generate steam to turn a turbine the spins a
generator?

Well, since you brought up contrails and reality, the turbulence from an
aircraft passing through the air has nothing to do with it. The results of
burning jet-A are carbon dioxide and water. When you release water vapor in
an atmosphere that is at -30F, it condenses. the shape of the resulting
condensation clouds are indeed determined by the wake turbulence of the
aircraft, but not the actual condensation trail - just the swirling shapes.

There was at least talk, if not actual tests, of releasing "chemicals" in
the atmosphere by high flying aircrafts to find out if a difference in IR
and or UV radiation hitting earth could be made, but I think it was short
lived. It only lives on in the minds of the conspiracy theorists and
anit-government hate groups as chemtrails.

Why would the bolts pull out of cast iron? I've only heard of that in
alum blocks: VW, GM northstarPOS etc.

Generally the threads in the block for a vergasser are 2x thread
diameter long. Diesels are more like 3x.

I didn't take any others. This blue car the guy bought in 1989 a year
old and had DDed it until the engine had its issue, so he kept it in
half decent shape. The maroon car is the turd, somewhat trashed but has
the supposedly good engine. We're going to get it shortly.

got it unloaded from my trailer into the barn with minimal drama, we'll get load the turd
with the "good" engine tomorrow. This one does not have a key, it got burned
up when the PO's trailer caught fire, so I guess I can't try to spin it for now.

This car is not half bad. So now I have one with a bad engine (420) and bad
tranny (300) that are both fairly decent cars. Now I need to find a 300SEL
with a bad motor and good tranny I can get for cheepcheep.
