Re: [MBZ] OT: From cow poop to nat. gas
In Indiana they were using the methane primarily for heat. However, they also captured it and would set up a supply for their standby generator, too. Because methane has such a lousy BTU content, like 500-600 BTU/CF, compared to natural gas (800-900 BTU/cf) and propane (1100 BTU/cf) you would have to oversize the generator to a factor of easily 2x or more, meaning you paid a lot more in capital to get the same thing. Add to that the driers, etc., that were necessary to process the fuel to make it viable as a motor fuel and you had even more money tied up in it. Sure, the fuel was free, but you had to lay out a lot more money to use it. And as I mentioned previously, it was hell on the equipment. Some of the landfills were doing it, too, but years later you could see that they gave up and were just flaring the stuff. -D > On Aug 22, 2019, at 9:22 PM, Clay Monroe via Mercedes > wrote: > > IIRC, Tina Turner had a hog digester to run her ThunderDome way back in the > ’80’s. Re: [MBZ] OT - chain saws
I've had the opportunity to watch a good shingle mill in action belted to a Farmall Super MD. I forget exactly but the sawblade was probably 20-24" in diameter. The cool thing about this one is that it automatically advanced the wood for the next cut. I *think* it alternated cuts so the wood stayed square every 2 shingles. This one used a chunk of wood like a piece of firewood standing on end, so it was already cut to length. Its been probably 9 years since I saw that one in action. My buddy Steve has on just like it but I've never seen it running. That reminds me, I need to finally finish up the video of Steve's Metz & Weiss semi-diesel engine... -Curt On Thursday, August 22, 2019, 4:14:54 PM EDT, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: On 22/08/2019 2:14 PM, Curley McLain via Mercedes wrote: > Shingle mill is just a horizontal sawmill with shorter bolts. My father built his own shingle mill not long before his demise. I assume it went with the rest of the mill equipment when he sold it. It was a small simple unit that required one to push the block of wood through the saw blade. There was a sort of toggle that shifted the block back and forth to cut fairly uniform angled shingles. I think he had it set so that it cut a bit thicker on one direction than the other so that the shingles, when nailed on, were staggered. I never ran it or actually saw him run it as by the time he built it, I had moved away. I remember him proudly showing me the contraption but not much more about it. When I was in college I worked for the IT group for one year. This was one of the real old school IT groups where you had to kiss the ring of the boss etc.At the end of the school year they laid off my manager which was a shame, the guy was great. The rest of us refused to kiss the ring and were not re-hired the next year. Unfortunately for them we had already penetrated the network and could do what we wanted. We knew they were monitoring our email so we instituted strict security protocols that included encrypting everything with PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). The encryption scheme would take 1 line of text and turn it into a paragraph or a paragraph into a page etc. So the amount of traffic stayed the same but the volume of each message jumped dramatically. It wasn't long before the 5 ringleaders (of which I was the least technical but most scheming) were hauled in to account for ourselves. They rolled out "We know you're up to something, we don't know what but you better tell us or else!" We kept our mouths shut knowing there wasn't anything they could do to us, even if they could decrypt our messages it was all mundane stuff like "What time is dinner?" any actual scheming we did in person, off campus. When I graduated the president of the college shook my hand for a second longer than everybody else "I'm not sad to see you go." We laughed, it was great. -Curt On Thursday, August 22, 2019, 3:02:28 PM EDT, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: No, he is fully aware that they are, and is just giving them something to ponder ... Methane digester/recovery is old tech, as Curley just suggested. It has some inherent negatives, however: Low BTU content Requirement to “scrub” and dry it, as in its raw form it’s highly corrosive I can recall working on equipment around total confinement hog operations that did methane recovery in the early 1980s with Purdue University and farmers in the areas surrounding West Lafayette. Sounds like another methane digester. Nothing new there. First one I saw in operation was 1983 on a hog farm. Of course you have to consider the sources: Vermont pointy heads and some moron submitting to the AP. Actually, the Mother earph news hippies were probably building digesters in VT in the late 60s. Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote on 8/21/19 1:56 PM: Manure and food scrap digester to make fuel for Vt. collegePublished: Wednesday, August 21, 2019 Construction is underway at a Vermont dairy farm on a system that will turn cow manure and food scraps into renewable natural gas to help Middlebury College meet its goal of getting 100% of its energy from renewable sources and provide extra income for the farmer. The groundbreaking for the anaerobic digester was held yesterday at the Goodrich Family Farm in Salisbury, Vt. "We constantly seek innovative ways to be good stewards of the land and practice sustainable and viable agriculture," said Chase Goodrich, who is among the fourth generation of his family to operate their farm, which now milks about 900 cows. "The digester will help to continue to make this possible." The digester, which is being constructed as a partnership of the college, the farm, Vermont Gas Systems and Vanguard Renewables, will be the largest of its kind in Vermont. A statement distributed by the college said the system would process 100 tons of manure and 180 tons of organic food waste a day into renewable natural gas. Vanguard is now contacting local and Vermont-based food manufacturers to find the food waste. Middlebury College, which is working on a plan to meet all its energy needs from renewable sources by 2028, is planning to buy the bulk of the gas that will be produced by the digester. Once the digester is in operation, it will supply about half the energy Middlebury uses for heating and cooling. The college's biomass plant will produce the other 50%. Both sources provide some of the college's electricity. Re: [MBZ] 280SE 3.5 cab on BAT
From my experience with moving sheet metal, the pucker in the floor from poor lift use, likely distorted the rocker, which could be the cause for the door gap issue. As Jamie stated... not an easy fix. in most cases, would require surgical removal of the floor, rocker and attaching parts, with replacement with newly hand made parts... by skilled craftsman. Followed by skilled paint work, to return to original status. Value of the car supports that level of work, but not at full boat price purchase. Estimate 2 yrs and easy 45,000 to 60,000 repair bill. First, make sure there is not a conformal coating over the circuit board -- if there is you must remove it from either each joint or the entire circuit board Then get a solder sucker if you don't have one. Then go over each joint, removing the existing solder and adding new -- you will have to do that with the six capacitor joints, anyway. This presumes you already have a soldering iron and non-acid flux-cored solder. Alternatively, for the non-capacitor joints, you could use some liquid rosin flux and put a drop of it on each joint before you heat it to re-do the joint. NOTE: You must always use flux when you heat a joint, which is why you must use flux-cored solder even for the initial forming of a joint. NOTE: The flux for plumbing pipe is not appropriate for circuit boards -- it contains substances which remain electrically conductive after soldering. Re: [MBZ] Pre-glow relay
Yeah, I'm going to order a few of each of the capacitors, start building up a "ready spare" reserve. I'm not skilled enough to ID a bad solder joint by visual inspection unless it is REALLY bad. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC On August 21, 2019 11:52:07 PM EDT, Curt Raymond wrote: >Jim Cathey would already have done it. ;) >Inspect the board for bad solder joints while you're there... >Curt > >Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android > >On Thu, Aug 22, 2019 at 11:31 AM, Max Dillon via >Mercedes wrote: Died in my '95 E300 >(124.131). Re: [MBZ] 280SE 3.5 cab on BAT
That hose hanging down from the front of the car is just the radiator overflow. It’s sloppy but easy to trim. The rest of the car looks decent, if a bit over restored in some ways, and missing big details in others. Like the two giant creases in the floor from someone raising the car on a lift incorrectly... that’s really ugly and not easy to fix. More pictures would have helped too. We have frogs like that all over the place. Re: [MBZ] OT: Tesla power
I would say there is a very large (read almost unimaginable) amount of money floating around that gets poured into all sort of things. HyperLoop, like nuclear power, is an engineering nightmare, and the maintenance required to keep it working will kill it. His car company still isn't making money, and likely never will, for the simple reason that electric cars produce MORE carbon release in total than gasoline powered one do -- there is at least a 10% loss in energy transfer from generation to motion, probably more like 30%. Pipe dreams (as in opium pipe dreams) and far to much available cash. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
