I’ve always wondered how cars can hang on upside down on the bottom of the
planet. Like do you have really good tires there. I know you drive on the wrong
side of the road maybe that has something to do with it, you can hang on
better.

Feasible? Yes! But it has been tried before - here and other

And actually minimizing risk is partially why most of us drive Mercedes. Peter
was in a crash that he was able to walk away from, because he minimized his
risks by driving a Mercedes. Wilton was in a very similar crash, and was able

>I'm with Rick, we're all going to get this eventually

I don't think everyone is going to get it. Statistics say herd immunity comes
at 65-70% infection rates. That said, take all the precautions you can. I look
at it like this. If Mike Tyson called you on the phone and said "I'm coming to
you this fall, and I'm going to punch you in the head twice, first with a left
jab, then with a right hook. There is little to nothing you can do about it." I
would find the best boxing trainer I could find, and I would begin training to
defend myself against that combination of punches immediately. We have facts,
and hard evidence that this is a mean virus. We know it is not going away. We
know the comorbidities. We know we can safely lose two pounds of fat a week. We
know through healthy eating habits and an exercise regime we can reduce
triglycerides, cholesterol, hypertension, and perhaps alleviate type 2
diabetes. It's about minimizing the risks.

If exercise was a pill, with the benefits it provides, it would probably cost
$15,000 a month.

From what I understand (which isn't much), Covid-19 is in the same virus
family as the common cold, while the flu is an influenza virus - a totally
different family. No one has been able to develop a vaccine for the cold,
but we do have marginally effective vaccines for the flu.
If my assumptions are correct, expecting a vaccine for Covid-19 to be
effective is an exercise in wishful thinking that will lead no where.

I think that Karl is correct in that if we contain this virus via
isolation so it can't spread beyond those it has infected already, we can
stop it in it's tracks and all of us don't have to get it.
However, given that a lot of Americans don't trust and won't listen to
those who know about this stuff, from the President on down, there is no
hope of stopping it. We will all get it, many of us will be very sick and
permanently debilitated by it, and too many will die from it. That having
been said, the planet is over populated ...

Karl,
Does anybody honestly believe the numbers coming out of China? I find them so
low as to be a joke...
I'm with Rick, we're all going to get this eventually, it's essentially a new,
much worse, flu. Get used to the idea now. This who are waiting for a vaccine
ignore the fact that the record for a vaccine release is 4 years.

My point is exactly that: many people (including me) want to minimize this
thing by thinking that all the people getting sick are somehow not like
them, but this is not the case. Statistically sure most young healthy
people are not going to die from it. But it still makes normal, otherwise
healthy, middle age people very sick in a way that influenza does not, over
a much longer interval measured in weeks rather than days. I am talking
about not being able to speak in full sentences for weeks, being short of
breath talking on the phone. Having pain in your lungs when you breathe.
For weeks.

I think the flu comparison article I posted speaks to this. Covid deaths
this year are multiples of influenza deaths even in a bad year.

Exercise is always good, as is eating right, not smoking and not being fat.

I am not trying to alarm anyone, or advocate for any particular response,
other than to rank it higher on the list of threats in your thinking than
the flu, take appropriate precautions, etc. Saying we are all going to get
it is rather defeatist when it is clearly possible to suppress to virtually
zero e.g. Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, S. Korea. I dont think any
of us want to give it to our parents or elderly friends. Wash hands, wear a
mask if you are close to vulnerable people for more than 30 minutes in a
poorly ventilated space, these are sensible precautions that don't cost
much. Maybe we will start to track it better so we dont end up shutting the
whole economy down.

Ok maybe I was silly to bring it up, especially for Euan in New Zealand
where they dont even have any of this disease.

Maybe the meth jokes arent so bad after all.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The Bug was Re: Sticking my neck out

2020-05-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I had pneumonia when I was 22. Happened over Thanksgiving weekend. I was very
fit, almost athletic, didn’t smoke or drink, and was in excellent health. I had
what I thought was a cold with a nasty chest cough. within a day or two I was
totally wiped out. Went to our walk in clinic at IU Med Center and they
immediately admitted me to the hospital there.

That was the most debilitating illness I’ve ever had in my life. I was so weak
I could barely hold a glass of water. It hurt to breathe. It took months to
regain my strength and stamina. The first few weeks after I returned to work I
worked half days because I was so wiped out by noon I didn’t have the strength
to drive myself home.

I don’t know how this latest thing affects most people other than what I’ve
seen and heard described, but I can tell you that without question, the flu,
pneumonia and other diseases that affect the respiratory system like this are
frightening. As soon as a pneumonia vaccine became available I got it. I
learned to recognize the symptoms as I approached running myself down, which is
what started it to begin with, and know when to “throttle back” so as not to
compromise myself again.

I’m just saying - don’t think that getting something like pneumonia will be a
transitional thing - it will affect you for months, maybe even years.

[MBZ] OT: Need help with Win7 laptop

2020-05-15 Thread Craig via Mercedes
I was using my Win7 laptop, looking at one of Newegg's pages in my
Seamonkey (Mozilla) browser while also opening another page in another
tab (which I have done without problems for years).

The page I was viewing suddenly was greyed out and things became very
slow. Among other things, I tried opening the Task Manager by typing
ctrl-alt-delete, but when I got to the blue screen where I had the choice
of starting the Task Manager, it was totally responsive, even to clicking
the shutdown button. I left it or an hour or so and came back to it and
found the same problem.

I finally held the power button down until the laptop shut down. After
pressing it again to restart, I selected starting in safe mode. There,
I scheduled a disk check at the next boot and rebooted.

After the disk check was done and the laptop was ready to log onto, I did
so.

I found the free space on the disk, which had been about 10 GB, was now
639 MB.

I ran Disk Cleanup and the free space went up to 1.7 GB.

I also noted when I tried to download a file from the Web the download
failed.

Since I have Cygwin installed I was able to look at the file in the
directory and see what its mode was. Instead of being

   -rwxrwx--- (770)

as previously, it was

   rwx--- (070)

which means instead of the user (me) being able to read/write/execute the
file he had no permissions to do anything. By executing the chmod command
to change the downloaded file's permissions to 770, I was able to retry
the download, which worked.

So: How do I get the free space back to where it was?

How do I get my web browser to put the proper permissions
on downloaded files so the downloads can be successful?

Thank you for your help!

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** OT: Political, Whodunit?

2020-05-15 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Well, since K'leb has authorized politics, I might as well give y'all some
breaking news.

former pres. Obama and former AG Lynch likely dunit.

Here's how we now know (H/T to Dan Bongino):

Flynn's conversation took place on 12/29/2016

The WH meeting took place on 01/05/2017

The leak occurred on 01/06/2017

There are 3 "legal" ways to have intercepted the call and gotten Flynn's name:

1- Criminal warrant, not likely

2- FISA warrant, no record

3- Unmasked by request, no record in that time frame. They were discussing this
by the end of December

But there's another way: 50 USC 1802 allows POTUS to order the surveillance in
lieu of obtaining a FISA warrant at the request of the AG if the AG certifies
that no US Citizen is likely to be incidentally captured.

Lookin' like that's exactly what happened, and will explain why BHO looked so
nervous when he accused AG Barr of "hurting the rule of law".

Hi all, from the Southern Colonies

I have always treated this mailing list as yours. Thus I have no right to
object to its content. And if I do, then I can simply suspend my subscription.

As it turns out, I have often done that since signing up more than two decades
ago.

My chief interest is in learning more from you technically-competent guys about
my 300TD. Occasionally I can offer something worthwhile in return. But most of
the list's traffic is irrelevant to my situation, including almost all of the
OT postings. When finding diamonds in the dross becomes too tedious, I take
time out. I’m deleting 98% of emails right now, so I’ll soon be signing off for
a while, I think.

I don’t intend that to be a reflection on you guys. I thank you sincerely for
the generosity of your advice in answer to my technical questions. I appreciate
that very much indeed.

Were I to offer a suggestion, then how about creating sublists: one for
technical stuff, one for cars and prices, and one for general commentary on the
American Way of Life? Is that feasible?

[MBZ] OT: The Bug was Re: Sticking my neck out

2020-05-15 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Karl inquires:

>How many people do you know who have died of the flu?

With or of? A few over the years with, none of.
I do have know someone who was very close to death from H1N1 in 2009. From, not
with. She is still not 100% a decade later. That is/was a VERY nasty virus that
directly killed a lot of otherwise healthy people.

>The mom of my 3rd grader's classmate has been in >the hospital for about 6
>weeks and a colleague of >mine at the hospital was out of work for 5 weeks
>>and still cant breathe well when she lies flat. 40yo RN

Estimated BMI over 30? Other comorbidities?

Sorry folks, if you are fat, out of shape, or have other health issues, address
what you can. The curve has been flattened, but the area under the curve has
not. Meaning whoever was going to get this virus is still going to get it, just
later this year or next. Meaning we will have to fight off not only Covid 19,
but influenza a or influenza b, AND Covid 19 concomitantly. So, with that said,

1. If you smoke, quit. Now. I watched my mom and my brother pass from lung
cancer. I suspect death from this is similar.
2. If you have a BMI over 30, lose fat. Now. Diet is key. Stop putting garbage
in your pie hole.
3. If you can tolerate hard aerobic exercise, do it every day. (Increase your
VO2 max) This is a pulmonary disease. Increasing pulmonary function can only
help.
4. Build some muscle. If you end up in the hospital for an extended period,
more muscle mass will help.
5. Get some sunshine. Vitamin D is good for you.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Obviously I am not a doctor, just an uneducated rube, and if this advice is
offensive, so be it. If it is bad advise, please post credible links disproving
it.

Yeah I like repaiclinic too. Their parts prices are a little on the high
side but they do have a lot of how-to info so it's worth it.

Unfortunately this stove is an old Viking and not listed. I'll probably
have to find the spark module and see if there's a label or part number

Re: [MBZ] Sticking my neck out

2020-05-15 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah when I see the drug jokes I think to myself "these dudes really don't
deal with drug addicts very much". But I find some of the ad typos highly
entertaining.

OT speaking of list decline I will contribute a bit in the interests of the
health of group members. There was some talk about how covid and flu death
rates are comparable and I just wanted to point out how incorrect that is
for anyone inclined to think about the two diseases as being similar in
severity. This sums it up pretty well:
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2766121?guestAccessKey=28f9727c-0a86-4d26-8900-e4391ec18af2_source=silverchair_medium=email_campaign=article_alert-jamainternalmedicine_content=olf_term=0051420

Many of us will know people who are seriously ill or die from covid 19. How
many people do you know who have died of the flu? The mom of my 3rd
grader's classmate has been in the hospital for about 6 weeks and a
colleague of mine at the hospital was out of work for 5 weeks and still
cant breathe well when she lies flat. 40yo RN. Flu doesnt do that. We still
dont know why certain people are affected and others develop only mild
symptoms, but the fact remains this is still running around the country
affecting a lot of people.

Take care of yourselves.

Some of the stores here (our local Wal-Mart, for example) have general
lighting which is turned on or off depending on how bright the sun coming
through the skylights is. The Wal-Mart, as large as it is, controls the
lights in relatively small sectors, so if one skylight is blocked by a
cloud only the lights in that area are turned on.

2020-05-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I have a gas stove, with electronic ignition. There is an ignitor spark
point for each burner, but they all spark together regardless of which
burner valve is operated, so I guess there must be a single coil and
circuit that creates the high voltage pulses to all the ignitors.

Anyway, recently it developed the symptom where if the oven has been on,
the burner ignitors don't work. No spark at all. If the oven is cold,
the burner ignitors work fine. So something temperature
dependent. Anyone dealt with this sort of thing?

The oven ignitor is separate and it's an incandescent coil setup.

It’s not an issue of recalls. They were poorly designed and had numerous issues
with things like pneumatic suspension, electricals, brakes, etc., etc.

If there was a model/chassis I would tell people to avoid, it would be the

Re: [MBZ] OT hard ice cream vs soft

2020-05-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, I remember those well. Usually on the roof of the store in the back.
Architects used to like to put the generators in those equipment rooms, too.
Lousy place to work.

Next best place was on the side of the loading dock, typically near the bailer
used for the waste cardboard.

Stop in to do maintenance or repair on their generator set.

“Hey, where’s your generator located?”

“On the side of the loading dock, next to the bailer.”

(Walk back to the loading dock, no generator in sight. Get the stock boys to
move the massive pile of broken down boxes waiting to be bailed to find the
generator underneath. Safety first, guys!)

That is not how our grocery store in Edgewood, NM, works. There are many
units, including some in the middle of the store, which have their own
compressors. I guess New Mexico is backwards ... (Actually, I already

Probably the reduced heat output of the lights is the biggest thing,
along with turning them off when nobody is nearby.

Bright lighting is important for merchandise appeal leading to impulse
purchases, but at the same time you'd like to avoid hot lights in a
freezer!

That’s a nice looking one, but too much money. Should be more like $3500. Same

If they had parked it after driving and just turned the key on to get gauges it

35 - 40F, depending upon how accurately your refrigerator maintains
temperatures, how evenly throughout your refrigerator that temperature is
maintained, and what is the consequence of occasionally freezing the
stuff there.

We have Shirley's bottles of insulin in our refrigerator. Our cost with
insurance at the beginning of the year (before her prescription coverage
reaches the "donut hole") is generally $14/vial. After the "donut hole"
it is $126/vial. If we freeze an insurance-provided vial and have to
replace it on our own, it will be $358/vial. We keep those on the door
and thankfully have not frozen one, though we have frozen the outside of a
head of lettuce in the back near the bottom of the refrigerator section.

That said, the closer to freezing you keep it, the longer things will
last. Egg cartons say to keep them below 45F.

Yeah I noticed going around a curve the sound diminished quite a bit so
I guess that job is in my future.  Thanks all for the suggestions, does
not sound like fun.  Maybe I should just sell this thing when I get the
211 wagon and let some other fool deal with it.

2 days ago the PS pump started howling too, I added a bit of fluid but
it didn't make a lot of difference.  BAH.  I have no idea why this stuff
just starts from one day to the next.

This evening as I was driving on my little road trip I noticed it wasn’t quite

got me thinking it might be rear wheel bearings. (Or CV joints? Do they howl
like that?) And the sound did seem to be coming from more outboard than in the
center. So I guess I need to get into those. I need to find a tutorial or
something from a manual or advice/experience checking them and doing whatever
to them.

Any advice would be appreciated. I don’t want to let it go to a catastrophic

One of those infrared thermometers is great for finding this sort of
thing. Also sticking brake calipers/cylinders.

Unfortunately if you don't already have one they are a little hard to
find right now because people are buying them up for COVID
screening. Harbor Freight isn't even listing them right now.

Seems odd because the cheap ones are definitely not medical grade. They
are good for finding hot spots and relative temperature differences but
I don't think they are terribly accurate. I would be concerned if anyone
was screening for disease with a $25 Harbor Freight thermometer.

I suspect it makes a bigger deal in the off times where there are few people
in the store.
I put LED strip lights in my gun cabinet with a pressure switch so they come on
when I open the door. Works sweet.

I noticed that Publix, the high end grocery chain in the SouthEast, is
equipping their freezer sections with LED lights and motion detection. When you
walk by the coolers the lights turn on. Move away, they turn off.

I wonder how much money this has saved them after the cost of the lighting?

Grocery stores have a whole “compressor room”
As we called it. It’s a big room with all of the compressors for all the
different units in one place. It sounds like the engine room of a ship when you
are in there. Each freezer or refrigerator case does not have a compressor at
the unit like a home freezer does.

A store freezer is a much different animal than a home freezer. First, it
is going to be 3 phase power, with high horsepower motors to drive large
compressors which use industrial cooling, gasses.
Second, the temp will be set quite low to accommodate the shoppers constant
opening the large doors and standing with them open for minutes, or failing
to close them carefully. Thus, the temps are set to "overkill" to keep
product firmly frozen.

Your home unit, at worst case, is opened perhaps two times a day, often
perhaps two times per week. so "cold soak" is not interrupted.

Pre plan ice cream use, set it on counter for 15 minutes before dipping
with a warmed scoup.. you should be good.

close track of them. As a result I think Ive had maybe 2-3 pairs of Ray-Bans
over as many decades.

I got progressive lenses from Zenni. Be sure the optometrist gives you
your pupilary distance (distance between the centers of your pupils),
they will need it to get the center of focus right, especially if you
have a stong prescription and need high-index lenses. This was not on my
prescription so I did my best with a ruler and looking in the mirror.

The lenses were fine, but while working in the garage I got a little
splash of brake cleaner or something on one lens. Left a cloudy, crazed
spot in the anti-glare coating. I'm a cheapskate so I just lived with
 it.

Also the frames I chose ended up being pretty weak and broke in less
 than a year.

I'm back to contacts with drug-store reading glasses.

-40 would take a two-stage system using pentane as the second coolant.

We had a -80 freezer at the hospital I worked in 40 years ago. Big beast. I'm
pretty sure grocery store freezers are -10 Freon single stage.
