Re: [MBZ] purchased for my mother from California. He can no longer drive

2020-05-24 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I think that's the first W116 I've seen with euro headlights. I don't
really think the 4 round DOT lights on mine look bad, but the foglights
look like a bolted-on afterthought from JC Whitney. The euro lights
really transform the appearance of front of the car.

The wear on the floor mat might belie the claim of 79,000 miles. Or
maybe not

I see this in my Nissan, not that it's particularly relevant to your
question. First half of the tank covers about 2/3 of the total
range. Gauge drops rapidly once half a tank. I figure it's marketing,
somehow. "Wow I've gone 100 miles and the gauge is still on Full"

AK house got a new LG washer just before WRD hit. Front load, top of the score
from Consumer Rip-off. The instruction manual is in four languages. Mostly
pictures. And all it covers is how to turn the thing on to do “normal” load.
There are a bunch more options, but to use them you need to QR code in for
that information. It will pair with your phone so you can operate it
remotely. Call it from work to do …. something. Because it can, and you are
too lazy to wait until you get home? You actually trust the kids to load it and
put detergent, but fear they will burn the house down if they touch buttons?

It does a much better job than the turd HE top load, but still not as good as
the front loader Frigidaire in SEA that is a decade old. Whites are dusky
instead of BRIGHT white

Kenmore is actually a label not a brand. I think most Kenmore stuff is
made by Whirlpool, though that has varied over the years and it's not
exclusive. LG makes some Kenmore stuff also.

anyway. Lost millions of $$$ and laid off staff. Then they get to open, but
some guy mystery gets WRD and … then it is too dangerous for being doctors.

Mom called the other day because her health care system is losing so much
money, they are calling patients to come back in to get services. Eye doctors
want her to show up to get injected fr macular degeneration. She wants to know
if it is better to be blind or dead (by going to provider)? Not a small trip,
as she will need to sit in the car awaiting the moment she can go inside for
service, then hang out while her eyeball dilates until the injection takes

No telling without looking at it.  Could be bad plugs, could be bad
relay, could be bad k40, could be no compression, could be no fuel,
could be locked up.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cure worse than disease

2020-05-24 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Too hard to pry the data AK supplies to CDC, but the newspaper has articles
stating that lockdown has caused marked increase in crisis line contacts. From
the reporting out of SEA, the locals are reaching the end of very short ropes.
Large increase in suspicious deaths, domestic crisis, mental health and suicide
response by kops, with resulting fatalities. Far more media stories than in
past years. Probably on a par with hot summer nights when the clubs and bars
were packed and crack heads would try to cap each other. Also pretty hard to
know if it was murder suicide or the driver lost control on an empty roadway.
It feels like the same number of traffic deaths popping up in the ipad news
feeds, but nobody is supposed to be driving, and the crashed cars are in out of
the ordinary locations.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-24 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I renovated the kitchen in SEA in ’96 with KitchenAid DW and fridge. Amana
downdraft gas range is the only thing to have failure, as the early electronic
control boards cook/desolder with prolonged high oven temps. Was expensive,
but better than purchasing new to have a fresh board installed a decade ago.
The board is now NLA and operated intermittently. Only issue with the fridge
was the copper line to the ice maker (plumbing, not internal) broke when the
cleaning lady moved the fridge one time too many.

The washer drier set that came with the house was kenmore from the late ‘60s.
The washer failed, but the dryer kept on blazing the moisture out of cloth
until 2008. It was replaced by the orphaned stacked unit dryer from the
upstair remodel when the washer there (Amana?) had a bearing failure.
Overloading condition. The guys who hauled both the kenmore dryer and the dead
washer took them to a refurbisher who makes them good again and sells them
cheap to worthy users.

Re: [MBZ] What is the deal with light bulbs?

2020-05-24 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Opposite climate for me. I hate the squirrelly bulbs and LED because they are
cold. A good filament bulb would pump out calories to keep you warm as your
read a book at night at the far reach of the heating vents. They also put out
a better Kelvin color so you felt warmed instead of flipping the switch to a
cool lamp that takes a few minutes to get up to operating
temperature/color/lumens. In AK, the darn furnace runs almost 50 weeks of the
year. SEA I could keep the furnace at 62f, turn on real bulbs as I needed in a
room and the furnace stayed off from mid-April to Halloween. Winter the NatGas
bill total ran all of $500, including the delivery fees and such.

I did toss LED bulbs into the outdoor fixtures and they last about as well as
cheep chinee filaments did

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-24 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

Yep, you got to wash them skid marks out of your shorts.

On 5/24/2020 5:26 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes wrote:

I guess it sounds plausible. Looking at the part though, it's pretty
corroded from the center to about 2/3 of the way out each of the
arms. It would take a good amount of time with a die grinder to get all
of that down to clean metal. Plus fitting the wood and gluing, figuring
out a way to clamp it ensuring that the shaft stays perpendicular (the
drum spins at 1300 RPM), etc.

It's frustrating that this part is not a forged piece of stainless
steel. Cost vs. expected lifetime I guess, few people will complain if
their washer breaks down after 13 years of service.

Honestly I'd probably give it a try if I were living on my own, but in a
household the tolerance level for fooling around with repairs while the
dirty laundry piles up is pretty low.

Definitely an approach I will keep in mind however.

Allan

Jim Cathey writes:

IDK about that As you can see by all the gunk and corrosion this is
a part that is wet and at least partially submerged when the washer is
running. Can't really imagine wood and JB weld holding up for long?

I can. For starters, trees are wet 100% of the time while living. But the
main factor is that I'm talking about basically rolling the wood in epoxy,
completely coating it, pouring a little epoxy in the trough, then pushing
the coated wood down into the trough. Then pour more on and trowel
it down so that it's completely filling the gaps across the break. No wood
will be exposed to water. The wood is there to give the area some flexible
strength, like the back of a sword (which ideally is not as hard as the
cutting edge), but mostly to fill the gap so you don't need stupid amounts
of the epoxy. Glue works very well if you can get enough surface area
involved. Hence filling the trough, etc.

For more strength, epoxying thin strips of steel over the back side of
the breaks would not be a bad idea, if they can fit without interference.
As with the wood, coat the steel so that no rust would ever start. The
steel is for strength, the surface area is for the glue. Maybe inch-long
strips, inch and a half. Something like that. The metal must all be CLEAN,
and rough.

This kind of repair, done well, would outlast the rest of the machine.

The only problem with pot metal like this is that they never make it thick

gunk off with a screwdriver. The metal is crumbling away. I think it's

Yes there has to be some explanation for why some people in each age group
are severely affected, but most people in each age group seem to have mild
illness. Genetics have also been implicated as a possible explanation.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-24 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> figuring out a way to clamp it ensuring that the shaft stays perpendicular

Not too much necessary. The part probably cracked and the crack propagated
along one leg. Once broken, the additional movement stressed the second leg to
break. Once cracked it probably wasn't properly perpendicular anymore, yet was
still washing. Also, pot metal tends to warp with age, so no decent engineer
would
have used it for anything truly critical. My guess is that glued good is good
enough.
You are relying on the cracked edges joining up again rather closely.

I'd use a Dremel metal brush for cleanup, wherever the regular Makita wouldn't
reach.

As far as fitting wood goes, we're talking more about whittling than any kind of
tight fit. You're just space-filling, to avoid going broke with JB-Weld. I'm
guessing
an hour of labor, plus glue curing time. Plus re-assembly.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-24 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes

I would clean and rough up the metal thoroughly. Then rig a clamp or jigs
to hold the piece so that one of the broken off pieces can sit back in place
without aid. Then I'd mix a bit of JB-weld and dab it all along the break,
both edges. Then sit the broken piece on and let it cure. This will tack
the piece in place. Then do this for the other break. Once you have a single
intact part again you then begin reinforcing the breaks with wood, metal,
and glue according to your master plan. You MUST reinforce the repair,
the first gluing alone will be very weak.

Won't take too much time, but there will be a lot of idle time while glue
cures. You don't have to wait any longer than it takes to become firm,
except for once at the end to let everything get strong.

You get a lot more street cred for fixing something than for buying new.

I can. For starters, trees are wet 100% of the time while living. But the

completely coating it, pouring a little epoxy in the trough, then pushing

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** OT: Mask Debate $.02

2020-05-24 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Being a 75 year-old with history of heart disease and cancer, I have been
watching this closely, to include the analogies about hurricane fences to stop
mosquitoes, and "legal opinions" that it would be illegal to demand someone
wear a mask to enter a business.

Here's my take:

We can't trust any of the science at this point because there has been so much
misinformation, disinformation, and political bias affecting public information.

We should err on the side of safety.

Some cultures are mask-friendly. Having spent most of my work-life hanging
around international airports, I have seen people from Japan frequently using
masks during seasonal illnesses. I understand Taiwanese do also. The figures
from these countries indicate a probable benefit from wearing masks. It is
clear that these masks are unlikely to stop virus-sized particles, but the
"science" says that the virus must hitch a ride on a droplet. Even a couple of
cloth layers can stop a droplet. It would be nice if we had a CDC that would
spend most of their budget experimenting with stuff like this so we would have
real guidance instead of being told first to sanitize all incoming mail and
packages, then being told later..."Nevermind!". But they've been too busy
wanting to do studies to determine if firearms are dangerous.

On a humorous note, I am expecting a result like in The Andromeda Strain, where
the cure was found by discovering that the drunks were immune. There is some
evidence that tobacco smokers are less likely to contract the disease, and
Canadian researchers are finding some strains of MJ can kill the virus.

[MBZ] OT Win10 PC audio - no output via display port?

2020-05-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
A couple weeks ago, I could connect my Win10 laptop to our TV and watch
streaming internet video. Laptop has a display port, which connects to TV
via an adapter to convert to HDMI. This set up worked on two different TVs.

This morning, the video is displaying on the TV but the audio stays on the
laptop.

I've tried both TVs, same issue.

I suspect a recent update on the laptop has changed something. There's
only been a couple of updates recently, one of which was to Win10, so I
think I'm going to try to roll that back and see if the problem resolves.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-24 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Oft-overlooked costs of replacement are the hauling and disposal of
the old, the time it takes to install, hook up, and learn about the new one.
The time it takes to re-train all operators on how to best use it, etc.
Plus packaging disposal, cleanup, patching wall dings...

Keeping one you _like_ going is usually worth it, unless the repair
costs get stupid. (As they usually are on anything with a CPU in it,
fairly soon.)

I pay for my water. Not a lot, in comparison to some areas, but it's not
free. Front loaders use less water which is the main reason I bought
this one.

I do have our old top-loader out in the garage, which I will probably
use until I decide whether to repair or replace the LG, assuming it's
still water-tight. It's been sitting for at least 4 years.

2020-05-24 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Took the back panel off and can see the motor but not the bearing. Turns
fairly easily by hand but something is scraping.

The current base level LG front-loader (without WiFi and other useless
gizmos, and basically the current model repacement for what I have) is
on sale at Lowes right now so I might just do that and be done with it.

Any issues with mildew in your Maytag? That was mentioned many times in
the reviews I've read. Never had an issue with mildew or odor in the
LG. Maybe because we use it almost daily.

Someone (off-list) said I should look at Staber. They use industry
standard bearings and parts, designed and manufactured to be easy to
repair. But they are 3x the price of the LG and have an 8-week lead time
on orders.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cure worse than disease

2020-05-24 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes
9 weeks after they locked down medical services, I'm more concerned with
those whose conditions are worsening or even dying due to the inability to
get nonemergency health care.

Example One: The local hospital's rehab center has been 100% shuttered for
nine weeks now. Taking away my 87 year old father's pulmonary rehab has
not helped him any.

Example Two: My mom nearly died from Giant Cell Arteritis ten years ago,
it was quite the race to get it diagnosed/treated before she went blind or
toes up. As our retired family physician said when she told him about it
later: "Arteritis! That's the last thing you check for!" To which Mom
replied in her deadpan way: "I noticed".
In the current environment, zero chance of success.
Can't get a face to face doctor's appointment, only 'phone examinations'.
Can't see the brain specialist who finally ordered the biopsy.
Can't do scheduled surgeries, like biopsies of arteries in your head.

Exactly. And that’s where some of this reporting is really messed up. It omits
background data that would make the claim pretty lame.

I can totally understand an increase in suicides over what’s taking place.

Depends on the LED driver. There are quite a few different ones.

The Dollar Tree lamps current limiter probably won't cause
troubles as it is not a switching mode power supply, though it
might generate some broad band RF noise. I have not checked.

as a simple metal filament. Consider an EMP. The filament has to
actually be heated more than white-hot by the pulse in order to do
damage. To do fatal damage to an LED junction, or junctions in any
semiconductor devices in its power supply, requires much less energy.

[MBZ] Nice 240D, reasonable price

1983 Mercedes-Benz 240d

Vehicles
Listed a day ago in Wilmington, NC

 About This Vehicle…

Driven 360,000 miles
Manual transmission
Exterior color: White · Interior color: Blue
Fuel type: Diesel
Good condition

 Seller's description…

This Mercedes 240D is in very good shape for its age. I bought it from
the original owner five years ago and he meticiously took care of this
vehicle from off the lot. I have every single record on this vehicle
including every single diesel fill-up and everything that has every been
done to this vehicle. The records are thorough, detailed and it is
impressive what care the original owner took of it. I also have the
original official Mercedes mechanic handbooks and tons of extra parts.
It is a great, solid, running vehicle with a four-speed transmission. It
does have a few rust spots on it that I will show when viewing. Other
than that, it would be a great daily driver for someone around town. I
just put in a new master cylinder and clutch slave cyclinder, battery
within the last 3000 miles and the tires have lots of life left on them.
My main goal for this car is to go to the right person that will truly
appreciate it. $3,000 or offers from the right person will be considered.

Re: [MBZ] What is the deal with light bulbs?

2020-05-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Here’s some trivia around the use of LED bulbs in automatic garage door openers:

The power supplies for the LED bulbs generate RF in the same range as automatic
garage door openers, enough that it’s been shown that their use will reduce the
range of the wireless remotes due to interference.

That means that using 25W incandescents (100W) will not generate enough heat to
cause a fire,
or other failure of the fixture itself, or overheat the ceiling, or harm the
incandescent bulbs themselves.
Your 5W (actual) bulbs will not cause the fixture or the ceiling any problems.
However, 20W of heat
_may_ cause the LED bulbs themselves problems, if it gets too hot in there.
Probably not, though.
The current-limiters in the bulbs are electronic, and need heat sinking. The
smaller ones now put that
in the screw base, where the heat can be conducted away by the socket. The
heat from the LEDs
proper in those is usually conducted/convected away by Helium gas in the
envelope.

No, it's not. But not too horrible if all it needs is a reasonably-priced
servicing. I do not ever intend to have a front-loader, I think they're
inherently more failure-prone. Water here is free. It is pumped up
out of our own well, used, and (eventually) dumped back out on the
ground to filter back down to the aquifer. Water 'savings' is not any
part of our plan, and never will be.

LEDs seem to be at about the 10% point now, when compared to an equivalent
incandescent.
Yes, significant where the waste heat must be removed via heat pump. Nearly
insignificant
in colder climes in houses with electric heat (like ours). But, we don't use
AC but rather a
swamp cooler. It doesn't cycle and runs continuously from mid-morning til
night. Still, less
heat load in cooling season means the room gets cooler than it would, which is
good.

The remaining 'problem' light is a 500W torchiere that my wife uses for jigsaw
puzzles.
Basically, a work light. I haven't seen anything good advertised for those,
yet. A unidirectional
cob panel type would be perfect, if it emitted the same effective lumenage.
Oh, and it needs to be
dimmable. I guess we have three of these, two more get used when her quartets
and quintets
are over for rehearsals. The bright but soft indirect lighting (from the
ceiling) is wonderful
for reading sheet music.

We bought a Samsung refrigerator about 2 years ago. While the refrigerator
itself is so far good, their ice makers are total piles of crap. Ours is a
French door refrigerator with the freezer in the bottom. It has 2 ice makes one
up top for the door and one in the bottom freezer. The bottom one works fine
but the top one does not work more often that not. When it drops ice it
continually gets jammed up and won’t drop further ice. It then often ends up
turning into a huge block of ice that is very difficult to remove. I will never
buy another one again.

Re: [MBZ] What is the deal with light bulbs?

2020-05-24 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> Several years ago, believing that 100W bulbs were being banned,

I believe the ban was repealed or postponed. Not, however, before the last
bulb-making plant in the US was killed as a result.

The 40W-equivalent bulbs I'm so fond of, the decoratives, are Philips,
which is a brand I trust. They also seem to be extremely well designed,
and I've yet had one to fail in any way. We're running 16 of them, most
of them outside. Most of them are lit many hours of each day, it's been
over two years now. Other lamps that are on a lot I have replaced with
LEDs as they burned out. We still have a lot of incandescents in the
house, and some CFLs, in the rarely-used fixtures.

I prefer the warm white bulbs, the daylight bulbs are simply too 'cold'
looking for my taste. Yes, they have more lumens. So what?

The camper got the same treatment. And there, the 10x reduction in
battery draw is very significant. There are only two incandescents left
there. One of them needs to be an incandescent, the one in the refrigerator,
because its heat output is functional. (The 'Winter' setting turns the bulb
on inside the cabinet, to make it run more so that the freezer doesn't thaw.)
The other (closet) I haven't found a form-factor LED bulb for.

Yes, lumens is the better way to rate. Problem is that I don't know the lumen
ratings of any of the incandescents I used to buy! If I needed bright, I put in
a 100W bulb... So, watt-equivalent is how I think. The packages should be
marked with both, then everybody is happy.

Hmm, my own rant. Incandescent and CFL bulbs are generally omnidirectional.
If I buy an LED bulb that is not, let's say, then maybe it's _not_ a
watt-equivalent
bulb. "I replaced this 60W bulb with a 60W-equivalent LED, and it sucks!"
The one place I have exploited LED-ness is in the range hood in the camper.
The peanut incandescent (omni) bulb was replaced with a square stick-on
panel of supposed-equivalent lumenage, but ALL of the light now aims down
at the stove surface. VASTLY better than the lame-o bulb of the original
design.
But, not as good as a night light...

Several years ago, believing that 100W bulbs were being banned, I stocked
up on them. I use them in shop lights, where I frequently break bulbs.
But it seems like I've seen them on sale recently.

I went pretty strong on the CFL bandwagon about 15 years ago.
The number of 5000 hour bulbs that I replaced starting about a year later
was quite prodigious.

Then five years ago, Philips LEDs became as cheap as CFLs of a decade
before. I bought a bunch, and started swapping out the CFLs.
I have yet to have a LED fail.

The Philips soft white are rather yellow, I believe 2700K.
The daylight are somewhat blue and harsh at 5000k.
I wish they were more like 3200-4300k. The 4300K bulbs in my S420 are
about as blue as I'd want.
With the Philips, I've been using soft white in open bulb fixtures, like
in the basement. If the bulb is covered, the 5000K daylight are OK.

A lot less electricity. That and they don’t produce any discernible heat,
either. That’s important in my part of the world where AC is on a good part of
the year. In my kitchen there are seven can/recessed fixtures. A day or two’s
worth of use with incandescent lamps is easily the total of the year’s
consumption of the same lamps in LED. Yes, they cost more, but even considering
the additional cost they’re still cheaper in the long run and we don’t have the
additional heat load.

It’s been my experience having used LED bulbs throughout my house for a good
five years if not longer that they do last longer than an incandescent bulb of
the same wattage and size.

Incandescent bulbs have been on the way out for a while. I believe their
production has been mandated to be either eliminated or severely reduced over
time.
