[MBZ] Something for K'leb

Seems to be a lot of bills needing paid in GNW. CL is littered with crack
price collected cars, garage space freed up to feed the family, and a glut of
handicap vans(?). Found these for the list, as I am without garage space or
desire to store outside.

Depends upon what stations you listen to. I found the hard rock and talk
stations had USAA and other military support service ads. The nancy pants NPR
and sissy stations never had ads supporting the services. When USAA opened it
to all service members, the word needed to get out. The enlisted and NCO
probably are paying more than the officer corps (well, above O3). I do like
the multiple refunds the current plague has USAA returning to me on home and
auto.

I wouldn’t mind having that 560SEL. Always wanted one but have never been brave
enough to pull the trigger. Price is reasonable for the condition, as long as
it’s running.

The 350SDL isn’t bad, either, but that’s a price for a running one. I wonder if
that one is operable?

1966 Mercedes Benz 230s Fintail sedan w/OM606 swap
$2,250

›
Cars

Listed a week ago in Myrtle Beach, SC

   Details
   …

 *
   Condition
   Used - Good

Selling a 1966 Mercedes Benz 230s sedan “Fintail”. It has a running n/a
OM606 3.0l Diesel engine and matching transmission from a 1995 e300d.
The vehicle has very rusty floors that will need to be repaired and
replaced. The vehicle will most likely need transmission repair, as the
person who did the swap hacked the drive shaft together and it broke and
cut through the floor (vehicle needs floors regardless of this damage)
and will need a proper driveshaft. The body is all there and all the
exterior trims and lights are there. It’s on the original 13” wheels and
I do have all 4 center caps (removed for safe keeping) I did not do any
of the work on this vehicle or the swap, so I cannot provide much info
on that part of the car, although I can answer most questions related to
these cars you may have. I am open to reasonable offers. I can deliver
to anywhere within a reasonable distance of Myrtle beach, South Carolina
as well. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Re: [MBZ] Insurance

2020-08-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
My credit union was originally for the teachers and instructional support
people of our school district. They’re now the largest credit union in Florida,
I believe. We don’t pay fees and have stupid low interest on credit cards, like
6%-8%. Their mortgages are competitive, but like most banks and credit unions,
the process is stupidly slow so whatever you might gain by using them you lose
in the ability to act quickly.

We’ve used a national mortgage broker for the last three home purchases and
they blow through the process like you can’t believe.

Good deals on car loans, too, if I ever needed one. Very competitive and will
loan on “older” vehicles, too.

Yup. If I recall the roofer was able to convince the adjuster that more than
50% of the roof had sustained damage from “wind events”. We just had Irma go
through a year earlier and we had gusts up to at least 60-70 mph. I think that
was the angle he used.

My employer credit union was originally open to Indiana University
employees only. Then they started accepting anyone employed in education
at any level. Now they are open to anyone, and even offer business
accounts and business lending. They've basically turned into a
commercial bank, complete with punishing fees for overdrafts, minimum

2020-08-23 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I don't know how my parents found them, but an experienced and small
company did their roof for less than twice what the shingles would have
cost at Home Depot. The owner and his son did all the work. Far better
than paying a lot more for a crew of newbie monkeys.

That's what I want, two men and a truck, willing to put a reasonable labor
charge on top of their cost of materials. They're harder to find because
they don't have a ton of money to put into advertising. And you want a guy
who's been a roofer for 10-20 years straight, not some random moron who
can't get a job so he calls himself a roofer when he needs money for more
drugs/alcohol.

They really replaced a 20 year old roof without pro-rating it? I would
have assumed you'd pay about 2/3 of the replacement cost, if the
shingles were the nominal "30 year" grade.

Re: [MBZ] Insurance

2020-08-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Around here, as I’m sure is the same case in your area, they troll the
neighborhoods after storms to get business. Many of them want to handle the
whole insurance claim process, where they get you to sign over everything to
them to handle. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but what can happen is they
do a crappy job and you have no recourse because you don’t control the payment.

There is quite a business in weather apps that identify storms and winds down
to the individual address. They subscribe to these services and use the
information to go out and canvass for business. It’s also what they use to
promote a claim with the insurance companies.

Find a couple of local roofing companies and have them inspect the roofs. Tell
them you believe you may have storm damage and they’ll know to look for it.

Also, how to find a good roofer? I see commercials on TV every night for local
roofing companies and see them driving around. They all seem be driving very
expensive trucks with very expensive wraps. I’m sure they charge a very
expensive price.

I probably need to do that. I didn’t know if they did free inspections or not.
I do need to do something at this house soon. A few years ago we had some
shingles blow off at the peak of the roof. There were left knee shingles in the
garage so I replaced them myself. Last week we had a pretty good storm blow
thru and a couple of days later while out mowing found some shingles in the
yard. I think they were part of the previous shingles I replaced. At the very
least I will probably get quotes to have that fixed instead of doing it myself
again.

Also, this roof was supposedly put on in 12 I believe. Whoever did it I do not
think did a great job. There are a few spots along that edge of the roof where
I don’t think they ran the shingles out far enough past the edge to get the
water flowing into the gutters. Instead it has ran down behind the gutters and
started rotting out the decking along the edge. Probably will need about a 6”
section of decking replaced it some spots. I know I have mentioned this before
here but have not addressed it yet.

This roof is pretty simple as far as roofs go. The roof on the other house is a
different story. It’s a very steep roof with multiple shapes and peaks.

2020-08-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Our roof of nearly 20 years on our previous house was in need of replacement. I
got quotes from two different roofing companies in the area,
both with good reputations.

The first guy came out, climbed on the roof and was up there for about 10
minutes. I asked him if there were any signs of damage (we had a hailstorm a
year previous) and he said there was so little it wasn’t worth the trouble to
engage the insurance company.

I called my insurance agent and asked him. He said to call the insurance
company’s claims line and schedule an inspection anyway.

The following Tuesday both the other roofing company’s estimator and the
insurance company’s inspector showed up at the same time. They were on the roof
for over 45 minutes. It seemed that the roofing guy took the inspector around
and pointed out numerous areas of damage, and the inspector concurred. We had a
small leak that was due to a nail lifting under a shingle that the roofing guy
identified almost immediately from the roof side.

The insurance inspector left and the roofing guy spent about 30 minute with me
going over all the stuff he found documented on his iPad.

That Friday I got the call from the insurance company, saying they were
replacing the roof. I immediately gave the job to the second roofing guy, who,
I would add, was not the cheaper of the two, either.

The total bill was close to $20k. We paid something like $900 out of pocket.
Nice.

Also, because the roof was installed with a newer nailing schedule that
complies with the latest code, our insurance dropped about $400/year, too.

Get both roofs inspected. Don’t cost nothin’ and you might get a new roof or a
good part of it covered.

Commercials for credit unions and mutual insurance companies are the first
obvious sign that management is running it as a for-profit business,
instead of for the mutual benefit of the member-owners. At that point, the
best you can hope for is demutualization with a chunk of free stock shares
going to you as a prior owner.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering

2020-08-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Only thing I can suggest is:

1.) Set up a password that’s simple and tell the congregation what it is; or,

2.) Get a consumer grade router in line with the existing access point and use
it’s parental controls feature to filter.

I’ve got an Asus router I use for my internal network and it’s got parental
controls and filtering available as an option.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Internet filtering

2020-08-23 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
The school's hot spot is on their own LAN, not my problem.

There are many functions other than church services, typically in the
fellowship hall (church meetings, parties, weddings/funerals, men/women/senior
groups, etc.) where folks want their cell phones to work. If they don't
connect to the Wi-Fi those cell phone batteries go down fast as the phones try
to ping a tower transmitting at max power.

I could add a password but then would need tell everyone.

I already configured OpenDNS but still looking for something better. I plan to
install a Unifi Security Gateway so I'm looking for a way to use that. There
are many consumer routers that could be adapted and security appliances
(without routing), like Circle. Still looking.
