Re: [MBZ] This is not political, but a serious question, if you can?t handle it then hit delete

2020-12-17 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Showing your (young) age Kaleb!

A "hanging chad" is a partially detached punch-out on an IBM data card. You
probably don't remember people carrying around huge boxes of IBM punch cards,
I've not seen a punch machine in use since 1983 when SIU retired their last one.

The Votomatic system used an IBM punch card with partially cut holes, the voter
used a stylus to push out the one next to the name of the candidated they
wanted to vote for. Needless to say, the card were fragile, and after a few
trips through the reader started to shed un-selected "chads", making them
unreadable.

The major drawback to them in high voting areas is the the tray that caught the
chads punched out by the voter were fairly shallow, and if not emptied often
enough the stylus would hit a pile of punched out chads and NOT completely
remove the selected on. If it didn't come off completely, it would hang onto
the card, a "hanging chad", and if the ballot was handled much, a lot of them
could come loose. So was the hanging chad a vote or not? Impossible to tell.

Just watched Man Lab season 3, episode 1. Sort of quirky, but engaging. The
pizza oven build wasn’t that great, but calling the national steeplechase was

Unlike much of what I have watched lately, I don’t feel like I want my time

[MBZ] engine swap survey

2020-12-17 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Ok I have the following conveyances:

1. 1994 e420 90k miles looks new from 20 feet, 2.82 rear

2. Murdered out matte black om606 87 wagon in suspended animation while I
make hard lines for the turbos and develop a data collection regime for
temps and pressures, 1995 interior, new dash, new suspension sls and
sportline suspension on all 4 corners, 722.3

3. 1985 wagon, stock, mostly everything new but thinking of rebuilding
injection pump due to lope at idle

4. Euro (no sunroof-huurah!) 1983 wagon, smashed in L rear quarter by
delivery truck, fighting with insurance who will likely total it. It has an
om648 with stock ecu and 722.6 with controller. Just a treat to drive but
probably too far gone to rebuild.

Somehow I need to make these into two cars. I am thinking sell the 85 as it
is nice, keep the e420 and the 87 wagon as they both have new suspensions
etc. Take the insurance check for the 83, buy it as salvage and take the
motor and transmission out for later use.

Question is what to do with the om648. It is such a nice motor and factory
tune. Maybe better than the 606, which smokes, is loud and has the crappy
old tranny anyway. Maybe swap the 648 into the 87 wagon and sell the 606?
But then there is the AC problem - need to find a clutched version of the
nippondenso to match the old style AC setup in the 87 124. Coukd find
another 12e wagon chassis and do a direct swap, but most of them are
totally knackered and need everything done that I already did to the 85.

What do you guys think? We use wagons a lot due to Yoda the Komondor, but
one is probably enough.

One good thing about COVID is that our dining out budget has shrunk
dramatically. We've always cooked but from March until May we "ate out" about
once a month and that was going to my friend Jon's food truck for the best BBQ
around.
These days we eat out once or twice a week, usually Sunday breakfast. I get
blueberry pancakes and bacon, eat a third and bring the rest home for breakfast
Monday and Tuesday...

Even if attention is paid, sometimes the medico fails to explain just what is
going on.

Dad had multiple visits to the poop scope folks, history of cancers, and all he
knew was that there was a benign adenoma in his duodena. Procto-idiot just
shared that, and let it fester. For years. Even gave him more colonoscopy.
Then, Dad feels horrid and thinks it is the Warfarin he is taking for clots
that has made his tummy unhappy. Lots of vomit and weight loss, he gets an
ambulance ride and finds out he had stage four gut rot. Died six months later.
He would have been 93 this weekend.

Re: [MBZ] A quiz question for you

2020-12-17 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
Drat!

Same sort of thing at my home. I get bills bi-monthly for water/garbage.
Last time I used water was 12/27/2019 in SEA. Got the bill for September and
it shows massive water usage and $180 bill. Had my neighbor take a walk
through to see if he found flowing water or anything out of the ordinary. He
reports nothing obvious. Last time I had water usage like that, it was a VERY
dry summer and I watered the garden, had kids taking showers galore, washing
four cars, and being teens, having to do loads of wash. Gave the municipality
a call and they claim stupidity, but will hold it in abeyance until the next
reading. Most recent bill showed even more usage, to the point I am thinking
the line from the meter to the home has failed and is washing away the
foundations. Neighbor once more finds nothing, but does note that there is
half consumed food and soda in the kitchen, which he had not noticed on his
many previous visits to raid my tool cupboard.

SQUATTERS!?

He does another walk through a few days later and still finds no obvious water
consumers running wild. Figure it was time to get a real plumber in to see
about that main line. They show up yesterday and wander the home. Turns out
it was a busted valve on the master throne, as well as worn flapper and float
causing chronic, but inaudible, consumption. Total cost = $1k in repair and
billing. And I am still not able to get out of GWN and home until summer.

Claremore, OK has a HUGE problem with electric going on the last several
years, has been quite a deal which they deny there is any problem.
There are people who have small little 1000sqft houses that hardly run
anything electric with $800 a month electric bills, this is after they
went to smart meters.

Colonoscopy cures colon cancer, since it's almost aways very slow growing. I
had two pre-cancerous polyps removed during my first one -- had I not had it,
in ten or fifteen years I would likely have gotten serious colon cancer.
Removal of the pre-cancerous polyps removes the origin of eventual cancer --
cheap cure.

Until a tumor is large enough to affect the water balance in the colon (they
tend to leak) or obstructs the bowel, there are usually no symptoms, and by the
time symptoms appear, it's inoperable. Killed a good friend on mine in Canada
in 1994. No colonoscopy in those days, and certainly not for someone 35 years
old with no family history.

Yep.  The water company called this morning saying they were out reading
meters and noticed we must have a huge leak or something because there
was 90k usage this past month.  The renter has been out of town since
the 5th for training and we figure the moron must have turned the heat
off and caused the pipes to freeze.  I get there expecting to open the
front door and all the furniture comes rushing out with flood waters.
Do not see anything wrong so I turn water back on.  One of the toilets
is running.  Apparently the handle somehow stuck up and did not close
the flapper.  Its as been running full blast since then.  I flushed it
10 times and it never stuck so it was just a fluke.  Just one of those
things that happens sometimes.  Anyway, yes the bill is their problem

I find it funny that these are called Dominion.  It so happens my former
company was Dominion (not related that I know of) and we were notorious

it to working, by which time our competitors had already come out with
the next best thing.

little levers. My father was a precinct committeeman and working
elections was expected of all of us kids, and most of us have
continued that effort since.

The “check in” station you mention is connected to a secure network
that is used to access the voter rolls. It’s not on the “Internet”,
it’s an end to end, encrypted, tunneled connection to the SOE which
can be a hard wired or wifi connection. This is common practice and
is configured and set up well in advance to maintain the security of
that data. One of my teams is charged with testing and verification
of these connections prior to the elections. The ballot printers are
a part of this system.

The scanners are purely stand-alone devices and have no connectivity.

Counts are typically moved from the scanners to the polling system
via secure memory cards that are encrypted. Some scanners also have
the capability of printing out results on a paper tape, like an
adding machine. The numbers, after being reconciled, are either
transmitted to the supervisor of elections’ via the local client at
the polling place or the data can be hand carried (in a secure, chain
of custody strongbox) back to the SOE (which is how they get back
there anyway, along with the paper ballots.)

Anyone who has worked the polls has been exposed to these processes
and procedures used to guarantee the integrity of the elections. It’s
certainly different from one state or municipality to the other, but
the general approach is the same. It’s highly controlled and closely
audited. Again, it’s not perfect, but the claims of widespread,
massive voter fraud are gross misstatements.

Dan, I'm afraid your experience is limited.  Here in SC, the voting

reported in

the press, and the "glitches" that always seemed to switch votes in one
direction (from Trump to Biden) point to the need for a thorough
forensic

audit so we can be sure the right candidate really won.

Our system is similar to what many of you described: one machine
where you
'vote' which creates a paper ballot, and then the voter takes their
ballot
(which they can review to make sure it is correct) and feeds it into
the

scanner, which counts the vote.  Locally, at each polling place, the
scanner totals are printed out after the last vote, and the total
number of
votes cast is compared to the number of voters who came into the
polling
place.  If those two numbers don't match, then they have to try to
resolve
that at the polling place, with the poll watchers from each party
present

(if they bothered to show up, a great many of our polling places had no
poll watchers - not enough volunteers).  Once the count is resolved,
then
the electronic votes and the paper ballots are taken to the county
election

headquarters and reported out.

The first station at the polling place was voter check-in to make
sure the
voter was registered / at the right polling place, and they (the
laptops)

were connected to a local WiFi hot-spot that was part of the system, so
they could communicate / get updates back to the county HQ voter
database.
I'm not sure if the ballot printer and ballot scanner were also
connected,

but once the count was resolved, it was loaded back onto that laptop
somehow (I'm pretty sure via the local WiFi hotspot) and that laptop
was

the way the electronic count was returned to county election HQ.

Here in Charleston, we had a lot of folks examining the totals and
comparing them to historical patterns, and although the results were
disappointing in some cases and pleasing in others, nothing was
observed to

raise alarms in the result.

What was troubling to me was that we had three known instances of clear
violations of voting law at the polling places, where one party
tried to
influence voters or intimidate poll watchers and so favor one party
over
the other.  This pattern has been repeated locally for years; one
side is
convinced that breaking the law and bending the rules in their favor
is OK,
and at every election we have to be ready to try to counter this

swapping in a 500 would be on a dead 350 car, R, E, whatever, the ones

I would think it would be mostly plug and play, I wonder if engine
mounts are the same or easy enough to do an adjustment. I have this E500

Having been the beneficiary of some of those young ladies (meal-wise,
not the other way...) I can say that the ride was good while it lasted,
but the rules changed and that put an end to a lot of the freebies.

Once when the former missus was an oncology fellow at MDAnderson, about
this time of year a drug rep took 6 or 8 fellows and spouses out for an
evening at a very nice restaurant in Houston (one that I had been kicked
out of a coupla years before, but that is a different story...) and I
happened to sit next to her at the big table.  The waitron brought
around the wine list, which was very large, and she says "I don't know
anything about wine, here you take it" and gives it to me.  I figured 3
bottles would be good to start, so I asked her what her rules were and
she says "it is the end of the year and I have a lot of my budget left
so have fun." I ask her, "How much fun?" and she says "As much as you
want." um, OK...  so I order 3 bottles that were like $150 each, some
wines I had heard about and one that I had at the same place at a
business dinner (Enron, my boss bought it) a little while before. So
those go down pretty fast among that crowd, it's time to order more, so
I ask her if I should, she says "I didn't really like those why don't
you order something better."  Uh, OK... so I did. I think we did another
round too, maybe like dessert wines or something, bubbly, I don't
remember.  We ate very well too.  I think the bill came to $2-3k that
evening, she didn't even look twice at it and handed her card over.

Ah for the good old days

PS she was quite a looker too, and a LOT of fun...

[MBZ] OT - Wright Brothers Day

2020-12-17 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
The Greatest Photograph of All Time?
The photograph above was taken by John Thomas Daniels, a member of the U.S.
Life-Saving Station in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. He recorded the
first powered flight in history, on December 17, 1903.

Daniels had never seen a camera before, and later said that he was so
excited by seeing the *Flyer* rising that he nearly forgot Orville Wright's
instructions to squeeze the bulb triggering the shutter.

Thankfully he remembered, and took one of the greatest photographs in
history, capturing the exact moment of a truly world-changing event.
*Happy Wright Brothers Day *
Today we commemorate the first successful flights in a heavier-than-air,
mechanically propelled airplane, that were made by Orville and Wilbur
Wright on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Since 1959, as declared by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, December 17
has been recognized nationally as Wright Brothers Day.

Re: [MBZ] A quiz question for you

2020-12-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Right after grad school I lived in an apartment that had gas heat and
stove.  It was on the 3rd floor of a big old house so I did not need a
lot of heat as the lower floors sorta migrated up to me, and I was not
around much anyway what with working.  So my bills would maybe be
$20/month if that in the winter.  One month I get a bill for $13k.
h.  So I called the gas company, went and read the meter, and she
says well that is the reading we have too so I'm not sure what
happened.  A week or two goes by and this woman calls me back,
apparently for some reason the meter got swapped and no one bothered to
write down the old meter reading, so I got billed for about a trillion
ft3 of gas.  She waived that bill and just restarted it from that last
reading, I got a month of gas free.

That's the complete toll for water use though right? I have doubts about
running that much water through a toilet at all in 2 weeks...
I can't imagine putting up with a toilet running for 2 weeks straight, it'd
drive me insane.
There ought to be a clause in the rental agreement about not reporting faults
to the landlord and holding tenants liable. Probably illegal though, imagine
holding somebody responsible for their actions, or inactions for that matter.

Re: [MBZ] A quiz question for you

2020-12-17 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> Anyone know a good way to cross check a power meter?

You need an integrating wattmeter. Basically a whole-house Kill-A-Watt
type device. It could clamp onto the feed wires for current, and tap them
directly in the breaker box for voltage. Then it integrates the instantaneous
product of current and voltage over a lengthy time, which accounts for both
the power factor as well as normal load variation.

It's not an inherently complex device, witness the Kill-A-Watt, but getting one
that's
intended to do the job you need... Well, I thought you used to be able to buy
them.

You need to check for the unexpected, too. I used to live next door to a guy
who wondered why his apt. power bill was so much larger than mine, yet when we
compared use patterns there shouldn't have been much, if any difference. Turns
out the apartment complex's exterior lighting was tapped off of his meter.
Once that
was known he got a rent break from management. I wonder if the current
occupants
know this?

Central Maine Power recently had to admit they were "probably" massively
overcharging a bunch of customers. I don't know what has become of it, if
anything but IIRC one of the reports was a snowbird home that got charged tens
of thousands for power at a house that was shut...

Re: [MBZ] A quiz question for you

2020-12-17 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl, do you have a 'smart' meter? Those basically allow the power company
to charge you a different rate for electricity used at different times of
the day. If your state utility / laws / regulations allow it, the power
company can charge you in ways that will be impossible to figure out if
they're fair and legal or not.

Dr. Bill Wattenburg used to have a radio talk show (maybe he still does?)
and he detailed the problems with CA utilities back in the Enron days, I'm
repeating what he talked about. He also went into a lengthy diatribe of
how the power companies will increase your line voltage above 115 volts,
sometimes as high as 125 volts, so you use more power and they can charge
you more money. He did a major study when brownouts where plaguing CA 15
years ago or so, and his study indicated that the brownouts could easily
end if the power companies reduced the line voltage so that your house saw
110 volts, with no damage or noticeable difference in how your appliances
etc. operated. No harm to households, just less power overall used, but
the power companies refused to do that because they made more money with
higher line voltages and the politicians refused to force a change because
they benefit from the crisis, even if it is a manufactured crisis. Sound
familiar?

What do you mean by “cross check”? Are you just wanting to compare your
readings with the power company’s?

“Sense” is probably the latest and the best from a consumer standpoint if you
want accuracy and lots of features.
