Re: [MBZ] OT BMW diagnosis
You drove 60 some miles from the first sign on to death. Electical things die mostly suddenly. Mechanical parts not so much. Computers are weird. Best bet is the OBD2 plug. There will be a code. The SIS was on telling you something. On Feb 17, 2015 2:33 PM, Donald Snook via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: It has coil on plugs, too. AND until it stalled and would not restart, I really thought it was either a plug or coil. BUT, since it won't restart it sounds like fuel instead of spark.I just found out the fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel filter (I wonder how much that will cost). So, it could be that. I went home at lunch and tried to start it again. It tried to start and turned over for half a second. But, stumbled immediately. The fact that it started (albeit for just a few strokes) makes me think that the fuel line had SOME fuel in it. But, I tried to let it sit for 10-15 min and see if it would do it again. But, it just cranked and cranked and cranked. -Original Message- From: Randy Bennell [mailto:rbenn...@bennell.ca] Sent: Tuesday, February 17, 2015 2:26 PM To: Curt Raymond; Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT BMW diagnosis Any chance you got some bad fuel? Not so common as it once was but a bit of water in the fuel and some cold weather and we have a problem. We used to pour methyl hydrate in every tank but I think the gas companies include that now and the environmental police make sure that the fuel tanks at stations don't leak like they used to. The early part of your message saying it ran ok if not climbing or accelerating sounds like what my truck did when I had a coil go out. Not sure what the setup is on your car but my truck had a coil on plug setup so each cylinder has its own coil. It was essentially running on 7 cylinders which was fine on level ground and just cruising but it stumbled climbing hills or accelerating. The OBDII reader told me which coil, I believe. We then swapped with another coil and the reader then told me it had moved to the other cylinder so we were pretty certain it was the coil. Remember, that the computer read out just gives you clues as to what is wrong and you should try to verify what it is before throwing parts at it. It is a 2000 BMW 740iL with 216,000 miles. Yesterday I had to make a trip to a town about 35 miles away and it started acting up. It felt like a misfire. If I was going at a constant cruise on the highway (75-80 mph), it was going great. But, when I had to climb a hill or accelerate, it started sort of jerking, like a misfire. It felt like a bad plug or plug wire (I know this engine doesn't have wires, but that is what it felt like). As I went further it got worse. I arrived in the town, took care of my appointment and headed back. Same thing. If I had to accelerate, it started jerking and bucking. At a steady cruise it was fine. I decided I would replace the plugs (I have had it for over 40,000 miles and have not done them). I think they were done previously with a little over 120,000 miles. I stopped at Autozone and got the plugs and headed home. My house is ten minutes away. As I pulled into my subdivision, it stalled. It would not restart. It just cranked and cranked. So, I am pretty sure that means its fuel. I parked it on the first street and walked home (it was only 5-6 blocks). I thought I would try again in the morning. So, my wife and drove over and I tried starting the car. As soon as I hit the key, it cranked and turned over, but stumbled and died. Then, it would only crank -- not start. Sounds like fuel, right? The SES light came on a week or so ago. I was going to bring it to my guy and assumed he would say, it was O2 sensor. Now, I am not so sure. The SES could be signaling misfire, because I think the computer shuts off fuel to misfiring cylinders. But, the fact that it will only crank now sounds like Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, etc. Last weekend, (not the one a couple of days ago, but the previous weekend), I drove to Ardmore Oklahoma and back (600 miles total driven) at highway speeds (sometimes even higher :) ) and it did great. No problems at all. The only thing I have noticed is that if I drove exclusively on the highway, I could get 25-26 MPG. But, the last few trips, the best I could get was 22-23 mpg and on this last trip it was 21. I had attributed that to either O2 sensor, or plugs or just winter fuel, heavy foot, etc.

Re: [MBZ] First Cars
First MB I drove (learned to drive) was my dads 170D ragtop. First wheels I bought other than my 10 speed was a '58 Ford Taunus 12M station wagon. My first car was a 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88. It was light metallic blue. It was my older brother's car and he was going to sell it or trade it in. I ended up buying it from him. It had the crappy 260 V8 and it was worn out. We called it the Snookmobile. My brother called it the living room on wheels. It had a whole bunch of problems. The headliner sagged, so in my 16 year old wisdom, I staple gunned it back up. It took about 800 staples! The exhaust had a hole in it and if you opened the passenger door, exhaust would poor in. If the car was parked with the nose downhill, the horn would come through the rear speakers. If you pressed the cigarette lighter in, it would shoot out onto the passengers lap. It required a quart of oil every three days. By the end of its tenure, it was a quart every day and a pint of power steering fluid. The little knobs on the window cranks were all broken, so it took forever to raise or lower the windows. One Spring break in High School I decided I wanted to visit my father in Mississippi. He bought new tires for the car. I made it about 65 miles out of town when it blew a hose. I think it also blew a headgasket. I drove it for a few more months and anytime I drove it over 15 minutes, it would overheat. Finally, I traded it in to my Uncle who had a small car lot. He gave me a very generous $450 dollars for it. He took the new tires off, and the trailer hitch, and junked it. Even though it had a lot of problems, I loved it. This shrinking action breaks the rust bond which has welded the fastener in place at the threads. In the case of your brake caliper which is cast, and the bleed screw, which is steel, the density of the cast caliper will lose heat less quickly than the bleed screw so you should get a good separation of the rust bond at the threads. After cooling, give the fastener a sharp rap with a hammer directly on the tip to jar lose the rust flakes, [might have to use a hammer and a flat faced punch due to the lack of space available to get a good rap ] apply a good vice grip [clean sharp jaws] and remove. My system only works from the drivers door. When it times out the pump quits sudden after ~20 sec. and sometimes is difficult to reset. So I gave up and left it timed out, but now realize that it drains my battery. Now the thing is unplugged in the trunk. I am not desperate to get it to function, but rather curious what is going on. What seems strange is that when I disconnected the + battery cable which should reset the pump I still read 1.5 A discharge. If it resets and does not run it should not draw a current. Re: [MBZ] 240V
On that note, I have a related question: I try to hook up a 30A/240V generator to my service panel trough a 2-pole breaker with fail safe main breaker lock-out (one has to be off before the other can be switched on). Manual calls for a 10-4 load cable and separate grounding of the gen. I can only find 10-3 cable. Since I go through my service panel where Neutral is grounded, why could I not combine Neutral and Ground in one wire and use the ground rod of the panel? Re: [MBZ] 240V
What bugs me is that my dear friend Master Electrician Speedy Kilowatt insists that what I am doing and essentially Mitch is doing is dangerous. He is mumbling of possible feedback of potential to the grid via the neutral wire. I don't see how a grounding I can establish is better than what the power company put in place. I think when electricians hear of an emergency generator they assume it is a stand-alone installation, i.e. then gen is hooked to a load with an extension cord. In this case I see the need for grounding the gen. Of course, feedback in this case is not possible, but I can become the grounding rod. It does measure the voltage between it's line and neutral, but if you return the load to the other line wire (line 2), it will still show the power drawn from its line. If you then have a second kill-o-watt in line 2, it will show the power drawn from line 2. Re: [MBZ] Another LED myth?
Some of us think the sun flickers. LED's themselves are cheap and last as long as a transistor lasts. The arrays they have to be put in and the driving circuitry embedded in that array is the driver for the cost factor. Allthough not cost effective for manufacturers in the short run, the benefits are out there. Considering marketing appeal - looks sooo cool, last forever, use less power, etc. - combined with the price tag of replacements, why not. When the bulb on the tail light of my truck burnet out, $ 1.95 fixed that. When the lens cracked (not my fault, I swear), $12.50 fiixed that. The LED tail light on my friends SLK 350 got hit and shattered. It still works, but the cosmetic damge is 1.200 bucks worth. They do it for energy saving and less maintenance although first cost must be higher. German cars are slowly converting to LED headlights, Audi being first and now MB and I'm sure BMW will do it just to keep up. Cast in “Stone” they are; Gravity, Kinetic, Dynamic, Static, Electric, etc., etc. A glow plug is a resistor, a electrical conductor with a designated resistance. Current flowing through a conductor excites molecules/atoms and causes heat - it glows and eventually burns up if current is not limited. Not knowing the metallurgical/chemical composition of a glow plug element, it stands to reason to assume that the electrical characteristics deteriorate, i.e. resistance increases. More resistance, less current, less glowing. Ohms Law is irrefutable, nor is the fact that things deteriorate with age and use. Ohm’s law is similar to the principals of Hydraulics: Pressure (V) - Head (Ω) - Flow (A). Only difference is that Head is influenced by Newton’s law (Static + dynamic). Electricity is weightless and thus exempt from gravitational influences. I just can’t get past the fact that Ohm tells me the plugs dont even get warm. I am reading 95 Ohm instead of 0.9 Ohm. Kind of like 95 % dead. A Ohmmeter tells you just the same as an Ammeter knowing the Voltage. Makes sense of my experience. No pre glow fault indication, but the motor was hard to start below 40 F. [MBZ] Volt vs. Gas
Eric Bolling (Fox Business Channel's Follow the Money) test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors. For four days in a row, the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine. Eric calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery. So, the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. It will take you 4 1/2 hours to drive 270 miles at 60 mph. Then add 10 hours to charge the battery and you have a total trip time of 14.5 hours. 270 miles in 14.5 hours would be 20 mph averge speed. According to General Motors, the Volt battery holds 16 kwh of electricity. It takes a full 10 hours to charge a drained battery. The cost for the electricity to charge the Volt is never mentioned so I looked up what I pay for electricity.I pay approximately (it varies with amount used and the seasons) $1.16 per kwh.16 kwh x $1.16 per kwh = $18.56 to charge the battery.$18.56 per charge divided by 25 miles = $0.74 per mile to operate the Volt using the battery. Compare this to a similar size car with a gasoline engine only that gets 32 mpg.$4.00 per gallon divided by 32 mpg = $0.125 per mile. Gasoline prices would have to rise to $23.68/gal to break even (assuming the cost for electricity -–to charge the Volt’s batteries –- remained unchanged). The gasoline powered car cost about $15,000 while the Volt costs $46,000. So we are encouraged to pay 3 times as much for a car that costs more that 7 times as much to run and takes 3 times as long to drive across country.REALLY? -- Hans Neureiter, Katy, TX '82 300SD '01 VW New Beetle 1.9L TDI ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Most missed my point. I copied the junk off the Internet and immediately made a comment what is wrong with it. Obama? Has nothing to do with that, but it is used to make him look bad. I retired from an engineering position with a national company in the business of remediation of hazardous materials. NASA hired us to do research and testing to dispose of Lithium batteries. Not feasible under all the governing rules (EPA, FHSA, NMSA, CFR, OSHA, etc). Well, we throw them in to a furnace and look the other way and ignore emissions. (Don't do that at home!) Glow P's carbon up like anything else in that motor. Carbon is a conductor. But as always, I was wrong before. (I read the whole post). Glow plugs. After ~ 2 min. warmup, the idle smooths out and the smoking ceases. Note: the car does not burn any oil, nor does it lose any coolant and the glow plugs and circuit are all OK. I took the car to a M-B indy in town and they suggested possibly low compression, so I had them do a compression check on a cold engine and they obtained the following compression check numbers: #1 Cyl. 430 psi #2 “445 “ #3 “430 “ #4 “320 “ #5 “320 “ This shop said the M-B spec for the maximum pressure deviation between cylinders should be no more than 43.51 psi and they question either sticking oil rings in #4 #5 or misadjusted valves. Since I do my own valve adjustments on both my '84 300D and my '85 300TD, I'm convinced the last valve adjustment (1000 mi. ago) is OK and the rough idle and serious smoking issue was present when my brother owned the car, but it's easy enough to check the valve clearances which I plan on doing tomorrow. Also note, for those who may not remember, at the suggestion of possibly the best M-B mechanic in the Pbgh. area, I replaced the valve stem seals on the 300TD in summer 2011. Any suggestions? G. M. Bottom line: you cant't fix a crack in the dash board unless you have a Williy's with naugahide glued to metal. The plastic surface gets brittle , curls up and the foam underneath opens up like the Grand Canyon. Sun and temp changes do that over time. Never use mine. Too scared it woun't close when the rain comes. Actually the sun roof was an expensive fall-out from the Citroens CV 2's and Fiats 500's roll-back tops. They saved sheet metal. Matra/Simca put a turbo on a 4 cyl F1 about 1965. Rules stipulated that a CAI motor can only be half of the displacement of a NA motor. And they won. My dad hd a '30's? Citroen C 4. What a car!
