Is the VIN plate screwed into the radiator crossmember, or riveted into the

The guy with the mohawk who's name escapes me at the moment does a decent job,

Another thing to be careful of is to make sure that they put the car on the
Hunter machine, not the much simpler (and less accurate) two wheel machine.
These older Benzes aren't adjustable in the rear and can be out a little - our
wagon has a little more toe-in than it should in the back. The two wheel
machine doesn't compensate for that, and the first attempt resulted in the car
still pulling - a quick trip back and a drive onto the Hunter, a more
experienced tech, and the car tracks true.

And yes, they are still $55.

at a vehicle and I dislike it.

The weight should go wherever the weight needs to go - whether that be middle of
the wheel, inside lip, or outside lip. If the wheel and tire are out of balance
on the outside edge, putting a weight on the inside or middle of the wheel isn't
going to correct the imbalance.

My entire enginge number is 616 912 102 681 24

I don't see 601, 602, 603 in my engine number.

The engine is a rebuild from Metric Motors out in California. The injection

special IP work, should be a very fast (relatively) 240D post break-in - lower
no-load max RPM, higher load RPM, and higher fuel delivery in mid-range and up.

Donna degreased the engine compartment for the most part - the bottom is still
grease-laden, as I found out when bolting up the motor mounts. The transmission
was cleaned as best as possible after removal, and then I touched up the top
half with some fine steel wool to remove the oxidation. As I mention on at
least one page, the photos simply do not do the motor justice. I hated to put
the motor in the car, and would have rather set it in my living room.

Well, that one was a do-or-die parking lot job here at the apartment. Needed
the mount changed so I could go pick up a new set of tires the following day,
and had 2 hours of daylight to get the worst offender swapped out. I installed
the passenger side mount about a week or two later.

Both mounts lasted from about late Febraury/early March of last year until
November or so, and I had to replace them again - did them in pairs that time,
and had no major problems. Motor mounts are now more one of those Zen-like

like most things these days, except for the clutch master cylinder in the 280S

No.

The real problem is that drivers in cars are never taught driver responsibility

The systemic problem is improperly, poorly, and/or inadequately trained drivers

front halfshaft
shift linkages
transmission crossmember
flywheel

And that's it. The flywheel, you can get by with a 240D flywheel. The
transmission crossmember problem can be solved by taking the crossmember from an
automatic (not manual!) 240D. All that's left is shift linkages (orderable from
Germany, was like $60 or so for all three through Rusty last year) and
half-shaft (orderable, but pricey).

Keep in mind, you'll also need to get the driveshaft rebalanced if you replace
or modify the front half.

I'll put my bet on precisely what you want, and not a penny less.

Could I remove the manual tranny from this car and put it into my 300d that
currently sports an automatic? I bought the car for a pretty good price
knowing it did not shift into high gear. When I got it home and put it up on
our lift, I discovered a brand new rebuilt tranny complete with new or rebuilt
torque converter. Since I'm not sure how to fix it, I thought about buying on
older 240D with a manual tranny and performing the swap. Can this be done?

Yes, it can be done. It isn't quick, cheap, or easy, but it can be done.
