I paid $1.99 for diesel just a couple days ago. That was nice, ~20.5

[MBZ] 1995 E300 mono-valve replacement

2020-01-27 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yesterday I installed the new monovalve, which is the version for a gasser
124. This version does not have the bypass of the heater core plumbed in
the same manner. I'm still not entirely sure why MB designed the coolant
flow circuit they way they did. New valve works great, there is still sort
of a bypass via the heating loop for the wiper washer bottle.

I used a 3/4" OD copper pipe to replace the "Y" pipe on the driver's side,
so that bypass feed is eliminated.

On my 1994 gasser wagon, which uses the same mono-valve as the replacement
I had purchased for the diesel, there is the same "Y" pipe and a bypass,
but that bypass feeder goes to the washer bottle heating loop. After it
leaves the washer bottle loop, it goes to the mono-valve as the same point
as my diesel car. Basically this means that on the diesel, there were two
bypass loops, one via the washer bottle and one via a straight feed into
the mono-valve.

Despite the mystery reason for the extra bypass line, the new monovalve is
working great, making hot or cold as required.

I found a thread on Peach Parts where a fellow opened up a monovalve, and
using hardware store plumbing bits, replaced the failed rubber bits and
restored function. I just may try that with this old original monovalve.
Found a new coolant leak, at the base of the circulation motor which is
built into the monovalve, hopefully that is just a bad seal that I can
reproduce. If the plastic housing is cracked, maybe a JB Weld repair.
we'll see.

Re: [MBZ] 1994 E320 (M104) No-Start

2020-01-27 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well I bought some starter fluid, and then immediately tried it and
the car started right up and stayed running. I wish I had tried to
start without using the starter fluid to make sure it was still a
"no-start" condition.

Once started, the CE light was no longer lit. I put on my code reader
at the diagnostic plug, got a few codes at pins 8 and 14, mostly
errors in communications between various gasser modules which are
mysterious to me. Cleared all the codes. Shut down the car, and it
immediately re-started no issues, no CE light.

Waited a bit, and then it would not start. Tried to listen for the
fuel pump, could not hear anything when the ignition was turned on
(should the pump run all the time when the ignition is turned on, or
does it run for just a bit to build pressure, or does it wait to run
until the starter is cranking?).

I tapped on the relay for the fuel pump, made no difference. Gave it
another shot of go juice, and it started with difficulty, actually it
took two shots of go juice.

Got down next to the car at the fuel pump, I think I could hear it
running, also observed a drip of fuel, so need to pull off that cover
and see what's leaking.

Re: [MBZ] Booting the axle

2020-01-25 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Are you working on 124 or 123 axles? In order to use the factory tool /
parts on 123 boots, you need to destroy / remove the can, and then affix a
new can which requires a special tool to roll the edge and make a seal.
I've heard of skilled DIYers that have rolled the edge with hand tools and
gotten the job done without the special tool. There was an MB garage here
in Mt. Plastic that had the special tool, and quoted me hundreds of dollars
per axle to re-boot. A used axle with good boots at $25 or $50 was a much
better deal.

No idea on the 124, might be similar?

Re: [MBZ] OT Mitch can pick up a Cruze cheap

2020-01-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I've told this story before, I drove a cab in college, fellow cabby told me
this. Details getting foggy, but here's the rough story. Fellow driving
for a different company, same town, had two unrelated passengers in his
cab, a man and a woman. Man starts harassing the woman, IIRC he was not
touching her but was very insistent that she submit to his charms. Despite
request from both woman and driver to lay off, man continues. Driver stops
cab, brandishes pistol and tells the man to get out. Man gets out, calls
cops, and cabby gets arrested in the Peoples Republic of Madison WI.

A simple enough weapon was a couple athletic socks around a few rolls of
coins. Perfectly legal to have coins, what if I need to make change?
Swing that correctly, connect with head or neck of the perpetrator, they
will probably decide to release the strangle hold.

Re: [MBZ] OT Mitch can pick up a Cruze cheap

2020-01-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Easy. Criminal in back seat brandishes a weapon and demands some property
which belongs to the driver. Any action the driver takes can be justified
as self defense. If the criminal actually uses force, the driver's
response is also self defense. For instance, criminal puts a knife to
driver's neck and asks for money. Now you have capability (knife) and
intent (ask for $) and opportunity (close physical proximity).

I think you're right, and I've made one of those. Just took a look under
the hood, all I see is the square diagnostic port by the battery.

Also noticed a coolant leak at the "y" junction for the heater core bypass,
piece looks corroded, so maybe need to run by the LKQ to snag one of those.

[MBZ] $500 Wagon Update, CE light is on now

2020-01-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
This week I'm driving the "new" 1994 E320 TE. Yesterday the commute was
uneventful. The front struts are totally flabby, so the car floats like a
70's 'Mericun boat. I may need Dramamine. Heat and AC both work, this
week I need the heat.

The coolant temp gauge has issues, starts out dead with the needle stuck at
cold, then it will jump to pegged, and then if I pound my fist on the dash,
it will drop and read normal after about ten minutes of driving.

Today a new problem presented, Check Engine light came on with the first
start this a.m. I've noted that fuel consumption appears to be very high,
only about 70 miles on the first full tank of fuel, and the needle says
about 3/8 of the tank is gone. Occasionally when warm, she is also hard to
start, requiring several rounds of cranking before the engine will catch
and run. Runs very smooth with plenty of power once started.

Maybe the check engine light is telling me that the O2 sensors are dead?

Occasional "no start" maybe a bad crank position sensor?

Re: [MBZ] 124 Convenience Control Module

2020-01-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well I learned something new. Dwight shared that holding the key in unlock
or lock position for 3 seconds will activate this feature. I just tried
that on the '95 E300 I bought from Dan, works on that car. Tried that on
my $500 '94 wagon, doesn't work, no surprise there as I know the central
locking system has issues.

I have read that on my cabriolet, if the windows are up when the top is
lower or raised, the windows will automagically lower a bit, and then
return to "up" once the top is fully up or fully down.

[MBZ] 124 central locking

2020-01-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
The central locking system on my $500 124 wagon, 1994 model E320, needs
attention.

The driver's door does not activate the system.

The front passenger door, when locked, will activate system and lock all
doors, and then immediately unlock them all.

The tail gate will start an endless do-loop, lock / unlock, until I unlock
it.

I suspect the driver's door is the issue, giving a continuous unlock
signal, so I'm planning to start the diagnosis there, but if anyone has
experience and can offer some insight, I'd love to hear it.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement Key Head for 124

2020-01-14 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I'll try to find something which can be dyed the same color as the car,
I've got too many black MB keys now and need a more elegant way to keep
track of which keys go with which car. Maybe color-coding will be the
answer, although I would hate to ruin a perfectly good key head simply to
change the color. Maybe the second key for each car, or a third spare
key...

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10

2020-01-13 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yay?

I just finally found and installed the last driver that I think I needed,
which was for the PCI serial bus. Took some searching to find a post on
Toms Hardware that had the link to the MS support page with the updated
driver for Win10 64bit. Device manager doesn't have anymore errors for
missing drivers, and all my stuff seems to work fine. I've got maybe a
couple pieces of software to install, but mostly I've still got to get
Outlook set up with the current email accounts and the archive .pst files.
Once that is done, the Win7 drive goes into storage, but because it is SSD
I'll bet it won't work if I let it sit too long with no power. Maybe I'll
get a caddy for it and make an external HD for moving files or something.

Re: [MBZ] A Great Deal of “Rollin’ Coal” at Start

2020-01-13 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On that engine, test the glow plugs, and if any are needed, pull the intake
manifold and replace them all. Not very easy to get to some of the plugs
with the manifold in place, plus if you pull the manifold (need a new
gasket) then you can also refresh the delivery valves with new washers and
new o-rings (if you have the special splined socket for the DV holders).
Between those two jobs, you'll have eliminated some pretty common
maintenance items for the next 100k miles or so. If you also replaced the
injectors (get a balanced set, don't forget that the heat shields must be
renewed as well) and overhaul the fuel pre-heater (new o-rings) and put in
new rubber fuel lines and return lines, you won't need anything but oil
changes for the next 100k miles.

Oh yeah, don't forget the plastic clips that hold the steel fuel lines in
place, and the little rubber pads that go under the lines. Another ten or
fifteen dollars in parts, but vital to longevity of the steel lines.

That is pretty neat. Swap that special-build body onto a more modern

May be as simple as a dead glow plug or two, maybe a glow plug relay issue
as Curly mentioned, maybe an injector is not spraying a fine mist anymore
until it warms up, might be time for a "rebuild" of the injection pump

Agree, that's it, and the 202 part number lines up with my memory.

When you get them, measure each end with calipers, and you'll find that one
end is slightly smaller and that is the end to insert first. Similarly,
one end of the arm has an opening slightly larger than the other end.

Have a hydraulic press?

[MBZ] Replacement Key Head for 124

2020-01-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I bought one of these for a 124 key that was missing the plastic head:

https://blenddoor.com/product/billet-aluminum-key-head/

Nice product, looks and feels good. We'll see how long it will hold up,
undoubtably a lot longer than the cheapo plastic replacements that are out
there.

Only downside is that these aluminum heads probably will gouge human flesh
in the event of a collision.

Re: [MBZ] More windows 10 update

2020-01-10 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I don't think I ever got a question about get updates later, but maybe I
blew past that. It was Win 10 1909 version from Nov 2019, going from the
official Windows download site. Once I got it up and running, I ran the
updates and it only had about 3 that it needed.

Glad to hear you're going to wipe the HD and do a fresh install, I'll be
very surprised if that fails. Did you check for BIOS updates like Roger
recommended? I did that as well, but no update was available.

When you get it fully set up, leave the OS on the primary HD, and keep all
your personal data folders and stuff on the second, that way "next time" it
will be much easier.

Does the dog wear an extra coat? I would think an indoor dog would
object to such cold weather without putting on another layer of
insulation.

Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Karl, Jaime: what about fine tuning the alignment of the differential, once
you get to the point of connecting the driveshaft? IIRC, when I swapped
differentials on my 124 last fall, new bushings were supposed to be
installed with a special tool in order to get the differential aimed
directly at the driveshaft so the entire assembly would be straight and (I
assume) minimize flexing at the flex disc and sideways loading on the
bearing at the nose of the differential. I didn't have the special factory
tool, used a Mark 1 Mod 0 Eyeball and calipers, paid attention to alignment
of the old diff and focused on getting the new diff into the same
position. The fore/aft depth of each bushing can affect the diff
alignment, if they are grossly different.

Re: [MBZ] Fw: Re: pizza oven talk

2020-01-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I remember reading that as well.

I'm totally spoiled, having eaten pizza in bella Napoli for years and
years. On the must-do list at every trip to Italy is pizza made in a real
brick oven, the closer to Naples the better.

Once when family was visiting, we all went to a local pizza ristorante to
pick up about five pizzas. The pizza oven was right up front next to the
cashier, big wood fired brick oven, heated up like a blast furnace. We had
so much fun just watching the chef build each pizza, put them all into the
oven, and then turn them a time or two and minutes after they went in, they
came back out, perfectly done. Family from the mid-west was suitably
impressed, probably their favorite event of the day, talked about that
pizza oven experience for a long time afterward.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Temperature in MidEast just went up

2020-01-06 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Sadly they are either floating museums or in mothballs again, and I do
believe they are no longer viable to be recalled back into service. They
were enormously expensive to operate (steam plants burning bunker oil, and
any casualty to the propulsion plant would pretty much require custom
fabrication of replacement parts) so after the evil empire fell apart, the
Navy was eager to retire them as quickly as they could. Tragedy on the
Iowa hastened retirement.

Re: [MBZ] Windows 10 upgrade failed again

Try this, if you have a spare hard drive so you can keep the old and not
lose your data.

Download the clean installation from here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Install a clean version, and when you connect to internet and it asks for
the key, use your Win7 key. Buddy told me that's how he did it, worked
fine.

I'm going to try this with my factory installed win 7 pro key.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Temperature in MidEast just went up

2020-01-06 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yes indeed, the shells weighed about as much as a VW beetle, IIRC a range
of over 30 miles (well over the horizon).

I read a very impressive / humorous account of an Army patrol in Vietnam
war that called for artillery support during an engagement with enemy
forces. Their first call to the primary artillery support unit got no
response. The secondary and other "normal" back-up artillery support units
also could not respond immediately. In desperation and in danger of being
over run, they put out a general call for any available artillery support,
and the response came from one of the Iowa class battleships. The Army
patrol did not recognize the call sign but proceeded to give their
coordinates and requested fire, not realizing they were calling in 16-inch
high explosive shells. Just one round of fire from that battleship
completely destroyed the enemy attack but also was so close to the Army
patrol that they were covered with falling dirt and debris and absolutely
stunned with the result of the shelling. In awe of the destruction of the
enemy and near death experience for the soldiers, they asked some questions
and then realized that a battleship had responded to their call. The
battleship was eager to provide another round of fire, but was assured that
the first round had been more than sufficient.

Re: [MBZ] OM617 Cherokee?

Have you the OM617 waiting for a new life?

Looks like the kit only has the parts to mate up to the transmission. What
about engine mounts, radiator hoses, fuel tank / fuel lines, throttle
set-up? Exhaust?

I'd think that if you had an entire donor car to start from, fabricating
all those bits would be a nice project.

SWMBO has offered that the OM603 burns a little too smokey for her taste,
for use in the "new" 124 gasser wagon project, so I might be making Floyd
an offer on that OM606 turbo that is wasting away on his vast estate...

[MBZ] New Cheap Wagon Weirdness

2019-12-28 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yesterday I had time to get to the DMV office, which was finally open after
the Christmas holiday, and completed the paperwork to register and license
the $500 wagon. Very long line at the DMV, but I have to say they are very
proactive / engaged, and only sucked up an hour of my time for the pleasure
of relieving me of about $120. The county property tax bite was $11.50,
outrageous!

Got home and finished up some yard work, put the plate on and hooked up the
battery and went out for a spin. First drive since I got the car home a
couple weeks ago.

The central locking system has some fault, which causes the locks to just
cycle open and closed constantly, if I try to lock the car. Only happens
when locking from passenger door or rear hatch. Driver's side lock doesn't
activate the central locking system. I guess I'll start with the driver's
door and see if that is the entire issue.

I drove down to local 7/11 to clean the windows and check the ATF level and
engine oil level. The low oil light is constant on, and the oil pressure
gauge pegs at 3 bar as soon as the ignition is turned on, so a couple
issues there.

While idling at the gas station to check and correct the ATF level, about
ten - fifteen minutes, the engine temperature crept up to about 110 deg C,
I guess there's some fault with the cooling system, so maybe a new
thermostat is in order. Once I started driving again, temp returned to
normal range. I had the AC running, I guess that additional load was too
much. Maybe there's also a bunch of leaves and dirt between front fan
shrouding and the condenser / radiator. I should probably start there
first.

Headlight switch is messed up but still works sort of. Monowiper is really
slow, maybe just needs the workings to be cleaned and lubed. Factory radio
has a dead display, so I guess I'll need to order another of those
Continental radios. I'm tempted to send this radio to those Becker folks
in NJ to get this one refurbished and add an aux-in cable, and then try out
a bluetooth adapter that feeds the aux cable.

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Craig - your VIN brings up the same $$$ monovalve as my '95 E300. The
Daytona FL dealer I've been using has a list price of $520 for it.
001-830-40-84

004-830-20-84 seems to be for non-heated washer bottles, and lists for $153
at same dealer. I'm going to poke around a bit more to see what I can
learn about this valve, and then I'm probably going to order it and try it.

Another possibility is 001 830 38 84, which is about $275, and seems to be
appropriate for late model 124 gassers as well as diesels. Maybe this
valve doesn't have the bypass option, but does have fitting for heated
washer bottle? Very strange. This is the valve that should work in my '94
gasser wagon.

I bought my Vertx pants around 2010 or so. Nine years of service long
enough for you? The price is rather steep, some re-sellers will have a
sale now and then for 20% off or so, but given the long life, I'm not going
to hesitate too much when I buy some replacement pairs.

I really like Vertx cargo pants, because the cargo pockets are more
discrete and perfect for carrying a smart phone and a small notebook. I
wear these with a nice shirt to work (unless I need to wear a jacket and

It looks like they have replace the model I bought with the linked

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

My current theory is that the bypass goes with the heated wiper washer
fluid bottle. The bypass pipe parts are noted in the EPC to go with the
heated bottle.

Does anyone have a 124 diesel with no heated wiper washer fluid bottle?
I'd like to know if your monovalve set-up includes the heater bypass.

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well the mystery deepens. Looking up a generic E300, instead of searching
by VIN, a different monovalve comes up, and it is forward compatible with
many later cars from 1995 up until 2011, including 210 E300 with OM606,
both turbo and non-turbo. Looking at the 124 2.5 models, 1991 used a
different type than 1992-1993. So perhaps there were two different
variations of heater / monovalve set up, some with a bypass and some
without, for my E300 and for other years. Perhaps it was a
climate-specific variation, or related to some other options?

Re: [MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yes, that part is pretty straightforward to design and execute.

Plumbing the coolant flow is where it gets fun. I need a new branch off
the coolant circuit on the other side of the existing monovalve for the
bypass circuit. Right now that branching occurs in the existing monovalve
body. This means finding a "Y" or "T" fitting of the right diameter and
splicing that in, and routing the new branch off that fitting to the newly
added monovalve / bypass circuit.

[MBZ] 124 monovalve variations

2019-12-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I compared the '94 gasser monovalve to the '95 E300 monovalve, and the
major difference is that the E300 version has a bypass around the heater
core, so the valve is two-way and either feeds coolant to the heater core
or bypasses the heater core. Gasser has no bypass, so the valve is simple
on-off.

One way to re-engineer would be replace the $450 valve (two-way) with two
on-off valves, one on the heater core circuit and one on the bypass
circuit, controlled so that either one or the other is open. That would be
a bit of work, but less expensive than a new monovalve.

Approach with caution. I think I've dealt with Kenny before, was not
pleasant to talk to. Maybe he was having a bad day. He had a nice 124 2.5
turbo on craigs list some years ago, someone asked me to get the
particulars on it, after 1 phone call the interest from the potential buyer
withered and died. IIRC, Kenny was hostile to the idea of me inspecting a
car for the potential buyer and even hostile to getting a PPI, but wanted
big bucks. I think Kenny flips cars for a few bucks on the side.
