[MBZ] M-B Color Palette
Has anyone else noticed the color palettes of cars have gotten very drab in the past 20 years or so. I was just looking at the 2009 M-B palette for the 550CLS-like I can afford one. I thought my monitor had gone monotone. They have four greys, two blacks, two whites, one silver, one redish, one blueish, and one greenish. Not that other manufacturers are any better. All I see on the road are greys, browns, blacks, and whites (with a few off hue reds mixed in). I remember cars in the 50s having about 30-40 colors-not counting the custom colors you could get by special order. Tom Potter -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [MBZ] New Vehicle
Well chaps, I am back in the Mercedes-Benz fold. I picked up a 1985 300D Turbodiesel yesterday for $1500. It has 238k on the odometer, which is not too bad. The exterior is Anthracite and needs repainting. The left front door is damaged and will need replacing. The right front door needs the trim replaced. There is a tiny rust spot just below the rear glass on the right, otherwise it is rust free. The interior is Palomino and looks like new. The engine runs like a dream. I have been waiting for years to find one like this. I had given up hope when I accidentally saw this one on Craigslist. Re: [MBZ] lugs torque?
There was a long thread about this on another list lately. The consensus was that anti-seize was OK, but you needed to reduce the torque about 15-20 percent. They had some backup data about the 15-20 percent, but I do not remember the source. I have used anti-seize on my vehicles for at least 40 years with no problems. What most people fail to realize about torquing is that the values are valid only if the threads are in PERFECT shape, which is rarely the case. In any kind of bad weather a pickup truck is about the WORST vehicle to have. The pickups of today are especially bad. Big engines, light rear ends and bad gas mileage. But wait you say, how could bad gas mileage make pickup trucks more dangerous? I know this one because I've been there. Bad gas mileage gets worse in four wheel drive so some pickup truck drivers will try to get away without being in four wheel drive in conditions where they really should be using it. A pickup truck in slippery conditions in 2wd is downright dangerous, especially an automatic transmission truck, especially an overpowered automatic transmissioned truck (which is like 90% of pickups being made today). Don't get me wrong I love having a v8 in my Dodge Dakota but having taken on a guardrail while traveling sideways at 60mph up Rt 95 at the tail end of a snowstorm I've learned to be vary wary... We were going up a fairly small hill, anybody who's driven 95 in southern Maine knows its made up of mostly gently rolling hills. The snow had quit an hour or so before and the roads were mostly clear so I'd shifted into 2wd to save some gas. I was young and dumb. I was going a bit faster than was prudent (young and dumb) even though the back end of the truck had kicked out a bit a couple times before. So finally the back end kicked out so bad I couldn't get it back. The big problem was that I was used to driving a manual transmission which doesn't shift by itself. On those hills the auto would shift and the increase torque would send us skittering. I've since learned to manually take it out of overdrive in those conditions. Oh and I drive slower now too and gas mileage be dammed I keep it in 4wd. Anyway my story ends pretty well, we slid down the crown of the road into the guardrail which was fortunately covered in snow. Bounced off, slid 180 degrees and came to a stop without getting hit by traffic. The bumper was dented up and some plastic trim damaged but still intact. I've left it that way as a reminder... Note that at this point I'd been driving for 6 years and had logged probably 90,000 miles, much of it in the snow. The problem was that I was inexperienced with that vehicle and fueled with a bit of remaining young man testosterone invincibility... I'd bought the Dakota myself with my own money... -Curt Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2007 19:14:43 -0400 From: Werner Fehlauer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] what are your odds? But the danger on our highways could really be reduced substantially IF we required drivers to actually LEARN how to drive, and not issue licenses out of cracker jack boxes. It takes about 2 years in Europe to get a driver's license, and you can lose it for a long time and pay heavy fines if you are caught doing something stupid. Here in the USA, in some states we have 16 and 17 year olds (given BMWs and Caddy SUVs by indulgent parents) on the road legally after passing a very minimal written test, and they may or may not even have to pass a driving test. And that test is usually more about parking than knowing how to safely drive at legal speeds. One has to wonder if the parents realize that they are seriously jeopardizing their children's lives by turning them loose without proper training and in too much of a car? That spinning 3/4 ton truck was probably either driven carelessly or by a driver that was never taught how to keep from losing it. Its wrong to pre-judge without knowing the facts, but IMO, 9 times out of 10, the driver in the skid did something wrong. Werner - Now that's room service! Choose from over 150,000 hotels in 45,000

It's not necessary for the later systems (124/201, later 126) that use the Nippondenso compressors that function whenever the system is in defrost (and the temperature is in the correct range). Re: [MBZ] Water pump vent pipe
My '81 300D had the U-shaped vent pipe. Tom Potter -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Peter Merle Sent: Tuesday, February 20, 2007 1:41 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] Water pump vent pipe Discovered that my 79 300D ( non turbo ) does not have the vent pipe from water pump housing to head as it should have according to the parts list. Could this explain erratic temperature fluctuations as I suspect that air pockets are forming in the engine due to cavitaion or whatever. Later Om617 ( +- 1983 's ) however did not require this vent pipe even thogh pump and housing remained the same - so I'm a bit puzzeled as to weahter one actually does need this vent. Here are the things that have come up on mine over the past three years: 1. Transmission: The tranny is controlled by a computer and the cable that connects the two weeps tranny fluid into the controller. You need to replace the seal and wiring harness, and clean the fluid that will has accumulated in the control housing. It is located on passenger side of engine compartment under a black plastic lid. Mine started to not shift out of first gear when cold, and I could smell something a little funny. Took the controller apart and it was about half-way dipped in fluid. Cleaned it good with electronic parts cleaner, replaced the seal and cable, and has been a lot better. Still likes to stay in first now and then, but going to N and back to P fixes it. 2. HVAC filters: These need to be replaced as soon as you get the car - they clog, and then cause the blower motor to overheat and blow the control module. Expensive to fix, filters are cheap. 3. Rust: My car was from Georgia and only in NY 2 years when I bought it. Over the past three years, rust has started to form here and there. I fix it as it starts, but not something that I like. 4. Head gasket leak: These motors are known to weep a little oil from the head gasket in the front. Mine had traces of doing it when I bought it, but after I put Mobil 1 in it, it appears to have stopped. 5. Light bulbs: seems I have had to replace quite a few light bulbs. Other then that, mine has been a good car. Dave Wakin My granddaughter is looking at a 1997 E320 with 90k miles on it. Does anyone have any advice about this model vehicle? Re: [MBZ] Bad gas recourse - was Saab stranded me in cold
One thing I haven't heard yet is that some gas stations may not adequately remove the water that has collected in their tanks from condensation. Yes, gas station tanks also collect water from condensation. When I operated stations, we had to pump the water out every few weeks. We had a dipstick onto which we applied water detector (in a tube like toothpaste). The detector was blue and would turn red up to the level of the water. We had a small pump with a long suction that drew from the bottom of the tank. It would remove the water in 5-10 minutes. I have no idea if modern stations even do this. BTW, I did get a tank full of bad gas a few years ago. It cost about $1000 by the time the fuel system was cleaned and repaired. Or the station rube put in water but didn't know the distributor had already added water? Then there is condensation etc... Re: [MBZ] OT House Build Quality
Give up. I don't think it has as much to do with the quality of material as it does with the quality of the workmanship. You will NEVER get a well-constructed house unless YOU supervise EVERY aspect of the build. Every builder I know hires teams of illegal aliens to do the construction. I do not think any of them know how to use a square or level. When I was a teenager, I worked for a builder who demanded quality work. If a wall was not within 1/8 inch of being square and plumb, he made you tear it out and rebuild it on your own time. I have NOT seen such quality work since. Re: [MBZ] Fun in the cold this morning
The answer to A is YES. I had a 280Z that would not turn over the engine. The battery indicated a full 12 volts, all the connections were clean and tight, but it would not turn the starter. Just for grins, we stuck in another battery, and it started right up. We took the battery and had it tested. It showed two cells bad, and would carry almost no load. Tom Potter -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Levi Smith Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2006 6:18 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] Fun in the cold this morning So... as of last night I was thinking well it's supposed to be around 15F this morning so I'll see how my 83' 300D handles that temp. Woke up this morning and it was 25F, Pff, no problem. Well... Something funky seemingly with the battery... It ran the glow plugs fine, but barely turned over the engine. OK, get the charger... Try to start. Get some almost starting, but not quite. So... after a good while of monkeying I found out: A) The battery charger seemed to think that the battery was about full, yet it would barely turn the engine over on it's own. (Have I got some issue where my battery still has voltage, but has lost it's amps?) B) My fuel gauge has only ever read lower than normal, but apparently the sputtering I dealt with last night on the side of the road for a few minutes was because I was down to about a gallon of fuel and while sitting in the driveway with the left side lower there was effectively no fuel. Had to borrow a couple gallons of kerosene from the farm and prime for a while. I filled her up with diesel this morning and she started fine after that. We'll see how she does this afternoon. Of course it's supposed to be up to around 40F or higher by then. I'm just surprised, this battery has yet to show any problems (other than when the dog turns on the hazard lights for a few hours and I then try to start it) and it showed no problems yesterday at 20F a couple times. But this morning it suddenly loses amps? (I'm assuming the battery charger is looking at voltage and that the voltage must be fairly high if it's showing as pretty much full...) Ahh well... If the battery IS the problem, seems like someone said that Wal-mart had a 1000Amp battery that was a direct replacement? Anyone have the model number? Or somewhere else where I could get a reasonably priced GOOD battery? i.e. I don't want to pay 3 times as much for the same battery that says Mercedes on it and I don't want to get a 350amp battery Thanks! Re: [MBZ] Totally OT Ford Explorer
This sounds facetious, but it is close to the truth. Remember, you are NOT working on a Mercedes. THEY do NOT WANT you to fix ANYTHING. THEY go to a lot of effort to make sure you cannot make any repairs. For example, look at the connections for a Ford fuel filter. Take note of the weird taillight bulbs. On older Ford trucks, this is a 4-hour job (at least). Not that GM is any better. Re: [MBZ] 83' 300D Steering box change
The pitman arm may be in a different position on the gearbox. You may need to remove and reinstall the pitman arm to get the steering wheel centered. I have not read up on the proper installation, but I suspect you need to make sure the gearbox is in the center of travel and adjust everything else to that. Tom Potter -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Levi Smith Sent: Monday, October 30, 2006 6:02 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] 83' 300D Steering box change OK, so I swapped out the steering box in my 83' 300D. I haven't driven it much yet, but someone explain this to me: --As near as I can tell, the steering shaft from the steering wheel to the box is more or less slotted with a knotch where the allen bolt tightens down the clamp from the box around the shaft as well as so that the shaft could not slide out of the box as long as the allen bolt is in place. So... If that's the case, then when swapping gearboxes, what could allow the wheel to not be straight when the old one was? It's just off a ways, not like 180 degrees. Or is there some adjustment where the steering arm attaches to the box? (My replacement box had an arm connected so I disconnected at the tie rod ends.) I guess my main concern is that I could not have somehow gotten the shaft in partially turned where it could potentially slip. -Other minor issue: Where exactly is that power steering filter supposed to be? My pump went dry and I was looking at the bottom of the reservoir which appeared to just be flat with a few holes. I have a new filter and I didn't see anything in the pump that looked like that unless it's submerged down in flush with the bottom of the reservoir. I was wondering if someone just took it out at some point. But it would seem like they would have had to have put in a different spring at that point as well... Anyway... NOT a fun job to do by oneself. Without another 6 inches to my arms it was near impossible to get the new box in and line up the bolts by myself.(which got more fun out in the gravel driveway as the sun went away) (: Luckily the wife came home and managed to get the bolts started while I manuevered the box. Re: [MBZ] 450SL tranny update, and rough running
Oh yes, that was one of the first things I noticed about the Mercedes vehicles. They were like a slot car at speed. They felt so stable and secure as opposed to Detroit iron, which took two hands and white knuckles to drive over 65 mph. Tom Potter ... I think owning this MB was when I first noticed the way the suspension changed (or maybe my 69 280SE) -- when I got to around 80mph or so - it seems to do it in all the MBs I've owned - at high speed the suspension, like,... changes - it kind of 'hunkers down' and the ride gets so smmoth! It's an amazing feeling actually - it's like being in a totally diffferent car. The pavement strips get virtually silent and the bumps disappear - and the car seems to float down the road. I suspect some others of you have felt the same thing --

Interestingly, the coolant system in mine worked on natural convection, as I found out when I broke the fan belt once, some distance from home. The engines are stout but subject to timing chain failure, just like later diesels. Check the chain stretch as soon as you can, before you have a broken camshaft and cam tower bearings. I am pretty sure the 66 has 5 main bearings, parts are still available, especially since the creation of Mercedes' Classic shops. Re: [MBZ] Synthetic jet fuel
Ah Yes, the FAA. What an anachronism. They have yet to recognize LORAN as an acceptable navigation instrument. Last I heard, they still demanded that you navigate by ADF--like Lindberg. I heard that a few years ago they wrote specifications for a landing aid that required tubes. The contractor had to go to China to get the tubes; nobody else manufactured them. (In aircraft that would be a serious no-no -- it might gel in the cold air at altitude.) The real question is a legal one. If this stuff is substantially different from normal jet fuel, the engines and fuel system will have to be recertified for it before the FAA will let airlines use it. If the savings are substantial enough, though, someone will pay for the testing to make that happen. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

That was similar to the GM switch. Also, the GM blower high speed switch had 30+ amperes running through a slip-on connection, which tended to corrode, get loose, and consequently heat up and melt. Since I won't go too much further off topic here. Does anyone have a VSS for an older model 700R4 from an early '80s Pontiac Firebird. I need the one with the gear drive in the transmission and the electronic output for the electronic speedometer. I swapped an older 700R4 into my 1992 GMC and now I have no speedometer until I find a proper VSS. The newer model VSS is operated by a reluctor ring on the transmission tailshaft. Re: [MBZ] '82 300 CD excessive oil usage-update
I agree with Dave's philosophy. I am not comfortable with machinery that is designed so that I cannot work on it. Either the engineer did not know how to properly design it, or he purposely designed it so that I would have to spend lots of money to fix it. Simplicity is elegance in design. Complexity is an admission that one lacks a comprehension of physics (aka Rube Goldberg). Geez Man, you live in western NC. Them mountains be transmission killers without a trailer. I am no expert on M-B automatic transmissions, but I do have experience destroying GM automatic transmissions by towing with them. While I am not experienced in the psychology of design, I do think certain forms evoke definite emotions from us. I am sure good designers have (or should have) studied this. I am not sure what emotions they hare hoping to evoke from us with some of the current designs such as the Element. Maybe they want us to think of our happier years in Kindergarten.
