[MBZ] M-B Color Palette

2009-01-27 Thread Potter, Tom E
Has anyone else noticed the color palettes of cars have gotten very drab
in the past 20 years or so.

I was just looking at the 2009 M-B palette for the 550CLS-like I can
afford one. I thought my monitor had gone monotone. They have four
greys, two blacks, two whites, one silver, one redish, one blueish, and
one greenish.

Not that other manufacturers are any better. All I see on the road are
greys, browns, blacks, and whites (with a few off hue reds mixed in).

I remember cars in the 50s having about 30-40 colors-not counting the
custom colors you could get by special order.

[MBZ] New Vehicle

2008-01-17 Thread Potter, Tom E
Well chaps, I am back in the Mercedes-Benz fold. I picked up a 1985 300D
Turbodiesel yesterday for $1500. It has 238k on the odometer, which is
not too bad. The exterior is Anthracite and needs repainting. The left
front door is damaged and will need replacing. The right front door
needs the trim replaced. There is a tiny rust spot just below the rear
glass on the right, otherwise it is rust free. The interior is Palomino
and looks like new. The engine runs like a dream. I have been waiting
for years to find one like this. I had given up hope when I accidentally
saw this one on Craigslist.

Everything seems to work... from the cruise to the A/C. It has a brand

new injection pump, and the tranny was supposedly recently rebuilt (have

receipt for IP, not for tranny). The engine barely sounds like a diesel

when driving around!!

The suspension is probably original it is VERY hard to drive in a
straight line. The nitrogen spheres are also completely gone... I'm
thinking about upgrading to Sportline suspension while I'm in there.
We'll see how all that goes. Will be a few months before I've got the
time/money to get started on it.

Folks,

This is bit off topic compared to the recent posts about anything but
Benzes. This one IS mercedes related.

Anyway, 1982 300TD, last summer the R4 A/C compressor rattled for a
month or two then finally seized. Now it's hot enough to repair. I
plan on replacing compressor with a new unit, receiver drier and
refilling with fresh R12. What else do i need to do?? Do i need to
flush the system (and how)? I read mixed opinions on flushinh.

Should i replace the expansion valve due to danger of plugging?

Have any of you been in the same boat and what did you do and what
were the results. How many years later were things good?

The climate control system performed admirable before the compressor
crash.

Re: [MBZ] lugs torque?

2007-04-16 Thread Potter, Tom E
There was a long thread about this on another list lately. The consensus
was that anti-seize was OK, but you needed to reduce the torque about
15-20 percent. They had some backup data about the 15-20 percent, but I
do not remember the source.

I have used anti-seize on my vehicles for at least 40 years with no
problems.

What most people fail to realize about torquing is that the values are
valid only if the threads are in PERFECT shape, which is rarely the
case. In addition, most torque wrenches (especially the click type) are
rarely calibrated and the readings are suspect.

I have yet to hear ANYONE mention that coal is filled with radon
(radioactive) gas. Coal piles emit much more radioactivity than any
nuclear power plant.

I am always struck by the fact that those who oppose nuclear power are
the same folks who just ADORE skiing in the Colorado mountains (high
elevation = more radiation + the rocks are the source of uranium), or
they LOVE the beaches of California (soaking up additional radiation).

Simple solution.Throw some sand bags in the back. No more light

rear end. Grew up driving 2wd Chevy trucks. My Dad didn't believe
there
was any need for a 4WD truck. I'll take a RWD anything with a little
weight

In any kind of bad weather a pickup truck is about the WORST vehicle
to
 have.
The pickups of today are especially bad. Big engines, light rear ends
and
 bad gas mileage.

But wait you say, how could bad gas mileage make pickup trucks more
dangerous? I know this one because I've been there. Bad gas mileage
gets
worse in four wheel drive so some pickup truck drivers will try to get

away without being in four wheel drive in conditions where they really

 should be using it.
A pickup truck in slippery conditions in 2wd is downright dangerous,
especially an automatic transmission truck, especially an overpowered
automatic transmissioned truck (which is like 90% of pickups being
made
 today).

Don't get me wrong I love having a v8 in my Dodge Dakota but having
taken
on a guardrail while traveling sideways at 60mph up Rt 95 at the tail
end
of a snowstorm I've learned to be vary wary...

We were going up a fairly small hill, anybody who's driven 95 in
southern
Maine knows its made up of mostly gently rolling hills. The snow had
quit
an hour or so before and the roads were mostly clear so I'd shifted
into
2wd to save some gas. I was young and dumb.
I was going a bit faster than was prudent (young and dumb) even though
the
back end of the truck had kicked out a bit a couple times before.
So finally the back end kicked out so bad I couldn't get it back. The
big
problem was that I was used to driving a manual transmission which
doesn't
shift by itself. On those hills the auto would shift and the increase
torque would send us skittering. I've since learned to manually take
it
out of overdrive in those conditions. Oh and I drive slower now too
and
gas mileage be dammed I keep it in 4wd.

Anyway my story ends pretty well, we slid down the crown of the road
into
the guardrail which was fortunately covered in snow. Bounced off, slid
180
degrees and came to a stop without getting hit by traffic. The bumper
was
dented up and some plastic trim damaged but still intact. I've left it

 that way as a reminder...
Note that at this point I'd been driving for 6 years and had logged
probably 90,000 miles, much of it in the snow. The problem was that I
was
inexperienced with that vehicle and fueled with a bit of remaining
young
man testosterone invincibility... I'd bought the Dakota myself with my
own
 money...

There will always be some risk in any activity, driving, flying, or
 just
sitting at home. But the danger on our highways could really be
 reduced
substantially IF we required drivers to actually LEARN how to drive,
 and not
issue licenses out of cracker jack boxes.

It takes about 2 years in Europe to get a driver's license, and you
can
 lose
it for a long time and pay heavy fines if you are caught doing
 something
 stupid.

Here in the USA, in some states we have 16 and 17 year olds (given
BMWs
 and
Caddy SUVs by indulgent parents) on the road legally after passing a
 very
minimal written test, and they may or may not even have to pass a
 driving
test. And that test is usually more about parking than knowing how to
safely drive at legal speeds. One has to wonder if the parents
realize
 that
they are seriously jeopardizing their children's lives by turning them
 loose
without proper training and in too much of a car?

That spinning 3/4 ton truck was probably either driven carelessly or
by
 a
driver that was never taught how to keep from losing it. Its wrong
 to
pre-judge without knowing the facts, but IMO, 9 times out of 10, the
 driver
in the skid did something wrong.

Subject: [MBZ] Auto extending_retracting antenna on 300D

I periodically use a silicone spray lube on my '84 300D antenna to clean
the
shaft(s) to prevent sticking due to dirt. The antenna appears to have
four
sections, but only the top (narrowest) and bottom sections extend no
matter
how much effort is taken in cleaning and running the antenna up and
down.
I've even tried pulling on the top section as hard as I could while it
was
extending to see if I could help unstick the center two sections.
Anybody
got a clue? TIA.

Yes, sorry I don't really know my auto-body terminology.

If your car does have those fender liners you'd do well to remove

Will check it out. What about the rust already starting? Can I treat
it with anything? I know there are a few products that claim to
convert the rust to prevent future corrosion, but don't know if they

Very rarely the track rod (aka brake support rod) BEARING on the
control arm will go bad. Requires removal of the control arm to fix,
and they are expensive. Usually that noise is the bushing on the
firewall end, but if you've replaced them, all that's left is a bad
bearing or a bad control arm bushing.

Actually it's important that the AC compressor be turned on and run
every few weeks (for a few minutes) ALL winter. That prevents seal
hardening and greatly increases compressor life. It's not necessary for
the later systems (124/201, later 126) that use the Nippondenso
compressors that function whenever the system is in defrost (and the
temperature is in the correct range).

Discovered that my 79 300D ( non turbo ) does not have the vent pipe
from water pump housing to head as it should have according to the parts
list. Could this explain erratic temperature fluctuations as I suspect
that air pockets are forming in the engine due to cavitaion or whatever.
Later Om617 ( +- 1983 's ) however did not require this vent pipe even
thogh pump and housing remained the same - so I'm a bit puzzeled as to
weahter one actually does need this vent.

Tom,

I drive a 97 e320 on a daily basis. Here are the things that have come
up on
mine over the past three years:

1. Transmission: The tranny is controlled by a computer and the cable
that
connects the two weeps tranny fluid into the controller. You need to
replace
the seal and wiring harness, and clean the fluid that will has
accumulated
in the control housing. It is located on passenger side of engine
compartment under a black plastic lid. Mine started to not shift out of
first gear when cold, and I could smell something a little funny. Took
the
controller apart and it was about half-way dipped in fluid. Cleaned it
good
with electronic parts cleaner, replaced the seal and cable, and has been
a
lot better. Still likes to stay in first now and then, but going to N
and
back to P fixes it.

2. HVAC filters: These need to be replaced as soon as you get the car -
they
clog, and then cause the blower motor to overheat and blow the control
module. Expensive to fix, filters are cheap.

3. Rust: My car was from Georgia and only in NY 2 years when I bought
it.
Over the past three years, rust has started to form here and there. I
fix it
as it starts, but not something that I like.

4. Head gasket leak: These motors are known to weep a little oil from
the
head gasket in the front. Mine had traces of doing it when I bought it,
but
after I put Mobil 1 in it, it appears to have stopped.

5. Light bulbs: seems I have had to replace quite a few light bulbs.

Other then that, mine has been a good car.

Re: [MBZ] Bad gas recourse - was Saab stranded me in cold

2007-01-22 Thread Potter, Tom E
One thing I haven't heard yet is that some gas stations may not
adequately remove the water that has collected in their tanks from
condensation. Yes, gas station tanks also collect water from
condensation. When I operated stations, we had to pump the water out
every few weeks. We had a dipstick onto which we applied water detector
(in a tube like toothpaste). The detector was blue and would turn red up
to the level of the water. We had a small pump with a long suction that
drew from the bottom of the tank. It would remove the water in 5-10
minutes.

I have no idea if modern stations even do this.

BTW, I did get a tank full of bad gas a few years ago. It cost about
$1000 by the time the fuel system was cleaned and repaired.

Leeee.. I own a gas station. I pay a buck 90 or so for gas.

more bucks. All I have to do is figger out how much water i can put in
the
tank, based on how much water the alcohol will suspend, and the %alcohol

the gas...

Now, what if this rube or the rube at the gasoline distributor put in a
little more water than the alcohol can suspend? Or the station rube put
in
water but didn't know the distributor had already added water?
Then there is condensation etc...

Re: [MBZ] OT House Build Quality

2007-01-17 Thread Potter, Tom E
Give up. I don't think it has as much to do with the quality of material
as it does with the quality of the workmanship. You will NEVER get a
well-constructed house unless YOU supervise EVERY aspect of the build.
Every builder I know hires teams of illegal aliens to do the
construction. I do not think any of them know how to use a square or
level.

When I was a teenager, I worked for a builder who demanded quality work.
If a wall was not within 1/8 inch of being square and plumb, he made you
tear it out and rebuild it on your own time. I have NOT seen such
quality work since.

I think there are two bolts that hold the glass in its lower frame
(which would be the top piece of the regulator assembly), if I am
remembering correctly. Stick your hand in there and feel for them
(there is an access hole in the door frame to get at them, but you might

have to drop the glass a bit). You can put in a little wood wedge to
hold the glass in place, remove those, and then drop the regulator to
wrestle it out, see what the problem is. When I get a chance I'll look
up on the CD what the arrangement is, my memory is a bit unclear as I
usually do that job on autopilot. Once you feel it out, it is quite
apparent what to do with it.

I have only removed the door panel, worked the window back up and

Re: [MBZ] Drivers door window problem, 81 240D

2007-01-11 Thread Potter, Tom E
I don't have that part, but you could probably find it at a recycler.

I replaced a driver's window in my '81 300D several years ago. If I
remember correctly, the glass just fit TIGHTLY into a rubber insert in
the track. This was 6-7 years ago, so my memory is a bit foggy.

I think there are two bolts that hold the glass in its lower frame
(which would be the top piece of the regulator assembly), if I am
remembering correctly. Stick your hand in there and feel for them
(there is an access hole in the door frame to get at them, but you
might

have to drop the glass a bit). You can put in a little wood wedge to
hold the glass in place, remove those, and then drop the regulator to
wrestle it out, see what the problem is. When I get a chance I'll
look
up on the CD what the arrangement is, my memory is a bit unclear as I
usually do that job on autopilot. Once you feel it out, it is quite
apparent what to do with it.

Re: [MBZ] Fun in the cold this morning

2006-12-06 Thread Potter, Tom E
The answer to A is YES. I had a 280Z that would not turn over the
engine. The battery indicated a full 12 volts, all the connections were
clean and tight, but it would not turn the starter. Just for grins, we
stuck in another battery, and it started right up. We took the battery
and had it tested. It showed two cells bad, and would carry almost no
load.

Subject: [MBZ] Fun in the cold this morning

So... as of last night I was thinking well it's supposed to be around
15F
this morning so I'll see how my 83' 300D handles that temp. Woke up
this
morning and it was 25F, Pff, no problem.
Well... Something funky seemingly with the battery... It ran the glow
plugs fine, but barely turned over the engine. OK, get the charger...
Try
to start. Get some almost starting, but not quite.
So... after a good while of monkeying I found out:
A) The battery charger seemed to think that the battery was about full,
yet
it would barely turn the engine over on it's own. (Have I got some
issue
where my battery still has voltage, but has lost it's amps?)

B) My fuel gauge has only ever read lower than normal, but apparently
the
sputtering I dealt with last night on the side of the road for a few
minutes
was because I was down to about a gallon of fuel and while sitting in
the
driveway with the left side lower there was effectively no fuel. Had to
borrow a couple gallons of kerosene from the farm and prime for a while.

I filled her up with diesel this morning and she started fine after
that.
We'll see how she does this afternoon. Of course it's supposed to be up
to
around 40F or higher by then.

I'm just surprised, this battery has yet to show any problems (other
than
when the dog turns on the hazard lights for a few hours and I then try
to
start it) and it showed no problems yesterday at 20F a couple times.
But
this morning it suddenly loses amps? (I'm assuming the battery charger
is
looking at voltage and that the voltage must be fairly high if it's
showing
as pretty much full...)

Ahh well... If the battery IS the problem, seems like someone said that
Wal-mart had a 1000Amp battery that was a direct replacement? Anyone
have
the model number? Or somewhere else where I could get a reasonably
priced
GOOD battery? i.e. I don't want to pay 3 times as much for the same
battery
that says Mercedes on it and I don't want to get a 350amp battery

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Totally OT Ford Explorer

2006-12-06 Thread Potter, Tom E
This sounds facetious, but it is close to the truth. Remember, you are
NOT working on a Mercedes. THEY do NOT WANT you to fix ANYTHING. THEY go
to a lot of effort to make sure you cannot make any repairs. For
example, look at the connections for a Ford fuel filter. Take note of
the weird taillight bulbs.

On older Ford trucks, this is a 4-hour job (at least).

Not that GM is any better.

Re: [MBZ] 83' 300D Steering box change

2006-10-31 Thread Potter, Tom E
The pitman arm may be in a different position on the gearbox. You may
need to remove and reinstall the pitman arm to get the steering wheel
centered. I have not read up on the proper installation, but I suspect
you need to make sure the gearbox is in the center of travel and adjust
everything else to that.

Subject: [MBZ] 83' 300D Steering box change

OK, so I swapped out the steering box in my 83' 300D. I haven't driven
it
much yet, but someone explain this to me:
--As near as I can tell, the steering shaft from the steering wheel to
the
box is more or less slotted with a knotch where the allen bolt tightens
down
the clamp from the box around the shaft as well as so that the shaft
could
not slide out of the box as long as the allen bolt is in place.
So... If that's the case, then when swapping gearboxes, what could
allow
the wheel to not be straight when the old one was? It's just off a
ways,
not like 180 degrees. Or is there some adjustment where the steering
arm
attaches to the box? (My replacement box had an arm connected so I
disconnected at the tie rod ends.)
I guess my main concern is that I could not have somehow gotten the
shaft
in partially turned where it could potentially slip.

-Other minor issue:
Where exactly is that power steering filter supposed to be? My pump
went
dry and I was looking at the bottom of the reservoir which appeared to
just
be flat with a few holes. I have a new filter and I didn't see anything
in
the pump that looked like that unless it's submerged down in flush with
the
bottom of the reservoir. I was wondering if someone just took it out at
some point. But it would seem like they would have had to have put in a
different spring at that point as well...

Anyway... NOT a fun job to do by oneself. Without another 6 inches to
my
arms it was near impossible to get the new box in and line up the bolts
by
myself.(which got more fun out in the gravel driveway as the sun went
away)
(: Luckily the wife came home and managed to get the bolts started
while I
manuevered the box.

Thanks!

2 model 94s, one is serial number 5,xxx in 38-55, fully octagonal

The other is later but has the very rare semi-octagonal barrel its

yes, closed doors. there are lots of efforts to find someone to take
over, so there is some hope.

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.

the gun is of such worth that it was produced up until the factory
closed its doors a few months ago. so many of brownings guns are as
useful today as they day they were first produced. i mean, is there
really a better pistol than the 1911?

The 38-55 is a much longer cartridge although it uses the same diameter

It was good on most large game out to about 100 yards although its a bit
small for moose.
It was also quite popular as a paper puncher out to 200 yards because of

2006-10-25 Thread Potter, Tom E
Oh yes, that was one of the first things I noticed about the Mercedes
vehicles. They were like a slot car at speed. They felt so stable and
secure as opposed to Detroit iron, which took two hands and white
knuckles to drive over 65 mph.

Tom Potter

...
I think owning this MB was when I first noticed the way the suspension
changed (or maybe my 69 280SE) -- when I got to around 80mph or so - it

seems to do it in all the MBs I've owned - at high speed the suspension,

like,... changes - it kind of 'hunkers down' and the ride gets
so
smmoth! It's an amazing feeling actually - it's like being in a

totally diffferent car. The pavement strips get virtually silent and
the
bumps disappear - and the car seems to float down the road. I suspect
some
others of you have felt the same thing --

I had a 1967 230 (gasser). I think it was better built than the later
M-Bs, though I was not a fan of the fins. It was a rock solid body and
engine. I never had any problem finding parts.

It had a heater fan. In fact, I still have an good heater core, if
anyone needs it. I also have the factory manual, if anyone is
interested.

The engines are stout but subject to timing chain failure, just like
later

broken
camshaft and cam tower bearings.
I am pretty sure the 66 has 5 main bearings, parts are still available,

especially since the creation of Mercedes' Classic shops. Worst case, a

nearly
as much as the original engines.

Driving one of these will scare the crap out of your passengers, as the

My 300TD has started to run on when I switch off. Because this happens

I'm completely ignorant of how the pneumatic system shuts the engine

leak.

JP-4, kerosene, jet fuel, gasoline/diesel blends, #1 deisel, #2 diesel,
it's not picky. Some smoke more that others, some cause power loss,

Ah Yes, the FAA. What an anachronism. They have yet to recognize LORAN
as an acceptable navigation instrument. Last I heard, they still
demanded that you navigate by ADF--like Lindberg. I heard that a few
years ago they wrote specifications for a landing aid that required
tubes. The contractor had to go to China to get the tubes; nobody else
manufactured them.

And automotive diesel is a common fuel for jet engines that have been
repurposed to power dragsters and the like. (In aircraft that would
be a serious no-no -- it might gel in the cold air at altitude.)

The real question is a legal one. If this stuff is substantially
different from normal jet fuel, the engines and fuel system will have to
be recertified for it before the FAA will let airlines use it. If the
savings are substantial enough, though, someone will pay for the testing
to make that happen.

Re: [MBZ] Falcon

That was similar to the GM switch. Also, the GM blower high speed switch
had 30+ amperes running through a slip-on connection, which tended to
corrode, get loose, and consequently heat up and melt.

1980s-1990s VWs are famous for their melting blower switches, too. It
comes down to cheapness...the switch is adequate for a new blower, but
when they get old and start drawing more current, the switch heats up.
A relay for the high speed would avoid the problem, but it'd cost an
extra few bucks per car. Multiply that by a million or so cars and
you're talking about real money.

I remember those foot-powered dimmers too. I had one of those that
worked intermittently. I don't know who panicked most when the

And GM wonders why nobody wants their vehicles. They never could produce
a heater fan switch that lasted very long.

Ya, like the foot powered high/low beam switches that would get full
of salty water there on the floor, corrode and break, resulting in no
lights when you
flipped from low to high. Or the turn signal switches made of cheap
pot metal that would break while making a left turn across 6 lanes of
traffic on a highway, fortunately steering wheels were really large
so you could really torque them to the sound of snapping metal. And
yes I was the villain that
snapped up the last three speed fan switch (jam and break) (what you

Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a try today. The button on the trunk

lock will not go all the way in, it only moves about 1/4 inch. I thought
it
might have something to do with the factory alarm but I found the main
pin
connection under the driver's side dash and disconnected it. The vacuum
system works fine as everything locks and unlocks with the drivers side
door

moving. I'll use some WD-40 on it and see if it frees up.

hi all,

I had the head decked on my 72 250 W114, took a while. I rebuilt the
carburetor. Fired it up on Sunday, stalled. Tightened the choke plate and I was
on the road.

This morning, weather was a little cool, 65 vs 85 on Sunday, and it took a lot
of coaxing to get her running. When I did, putting her in drive or reverse
cased her to stall. Let her get to temperature, failed again.

Any idea what may be causing this trouble?

Thanks

Since I won't go too much further off topic here. Does anyone have a VSS
for an older model 700R4 from an early '80s Pontiac Firebird. I need the
one with the gear drive in the transmission and the electronic output
for the electronic speedometer.

I swapped an older 700R4 into my 1992 GMC and now I have no speedometer
until I find a proper VSS. The newer model VSS is operated by a reluctor
ring on the transmission tailshaft. Swapping a reluctor onto the older
transmission can be done, but it is a lot of work. From what research I
have done, I understand that the early '80s Pontiac Firebirds had the
electronic speedometer with the gear drive on the tailshaft.

Hmm. Tempting. The consensus seems to be that most of the time, a good
result can be expected.

I'm sure there's a limit to how bad the dent can be and still have this
work.

I've heard mention of hail damage - that would seem to be small dings.

My dent is more like a pushed-in area on the pass. rear door. Not too
bad,
in fact somewhat hard to notice. But the area of damage spans about a
foot
in radius, and unfortunately, crosses the horizontal crease in the door.

Wonder if that's the sort of thing that dentless handles.

There is some difference of opinion here, on whether turbos are
'user-serviceable' or not.

I fall on the side of the fence that says they are a machine-shop
service
item, and even then only a shop that works on turbos regularly.

If you have a heavy truck service outlet in your area, ask them who
rebuilds
their turbos. You may find they send them out of town to a big turbo
rebuilder; often these operations sell on an exchange basis.

Put it this way: I know two guys who rally on the pro circuit, and build
their own engines, and even they won't mess with a turbo themselves.

Re: [MBZ] '82 300 CD excessive oil usage-update

2006-09-07 Thread Potter, Tom E
I agree with Dave's philosophy. I am not comfortable with machinery that
is designed so that I cannot work on it. Either the engineer did not
know how to properly design it, or he purposely designed it so that I
would have to spend lots of money to fix it.

Simplicity is elegance in design. Complexity is an admission that one
lacks a comprehension of physics (aka Rube Goldberg).

You mark the position of the turbines on the shaft and put them back
in the same place when you are done. You are just swapping some
frigging brass bushings. You can believe they are somehow magical and
that you need to belong to the club or end up in hell if you try to
break the code of silence, but I believe in physics. I have seen
inside the wonders of the turbo and can tell you from experience that
there ain't no magic in there.

I am fully aware that I risk royally screwing things up by working on
them myself - and I still choose to do so. I learn NOTHING by sending
it out for repair. I'll admit that I have made some expensive mistakes
with this philosophy, but they were mine to make.

If you follow the Mercedes Guidelines on 'user-serviceable', we would
not even be changing our own oil.

I fall on the side of the fence that says they are a machine-shop

If you have a heavy truck service outlet in your area, ask them who
rebuilds
their turbos. You may find they send them out of town to a big turbo
rebuilder; often these operations sell on an exchange basis.

Put it this way: I know two guys who rally on the pro circuit, and
build
their own engines, and even they won't mess with a turbo themselves.

Geez Man, you live in western NC. Them mountains be transmission killers

I am no expert on M-B automatic transmissions, but I do have experience
destroying GM automatic transmissions by towing with them. The
automotive and light truck transmissions heat up significantly and
destroy the clutches if you add much trailer weight. I would only tow
with the heavy duty truck transmissions.

I need to use my 82 300D Turbo to do some towing of a 5 x 8 foot

Howdy,
A friend has a '01 A4 Audi which is losing oil - usually all at once -

there's the ocassional smell of oil - and puffs of smoke as his wife
drives
away. Can't see any leaks. I suggested he keep the level at 1/2 beween

low and high but we'll have to wait and see how it does.

Does anyone have any experience with these cars? It's been maintained
by
the book - regular (3k-5k mi) oil filter changes - is there any
inherent

Any websites with info about Audi's?

Sacrifice a lug-bolt by creatively cutting a slot along the threads near

the bottom (off-center, ie about 1/3 way in from the top right with the
bolt end facing you).. make the slot about 6 threads long and a bit
deeper

I'm also a big fan of New Balance - unfortunatly they don't make
them in
wide sizes - although I have a couple of pair that I wear anyway - but
the
Wides are *much* more comfortable - if you've never tried your size in a

Wide I suggest you give it a try - IMHO a huge part of the population
should
be wearing Wides but because they're not available everywhere they buy
Medium/Regular and suffer because of it.

Anyway, just bought a pair of EasySpirit sneakers (yes, they make them
for
men also) ;-) and they're the lightest, most comfortable shoes I;ve ever

worn. Sadly, they're Made in China - - it's getting hard to find
something
that's *not* made in China although I try -

I rarely pay more than $30 for sneakers/running shoes.
They usually have a manufacturing cost of $5 a pair or
less these days, but the New Balance that I try to buy
have a certain level of US content and likely cost more
to make. My last shoe purchase: Meijer's (kind of like
a midwest only Walmart) had a buy one, get one for a buck
sale on all shoes. The $1 pair couldn't cost more than the
pair you were paying for. They also had 25% off on New Balance.
The sneakers I wanted were tagged $65, so they were a bit under
$49. I picked up a pair of $50 Nunn Bush (now made in India)
loafers for the office, paid a buck for the sneakers, and
paid $51 for all. Normal discount store price on the shoes
was $115. I could have just as easily bought two of the $65
running shoes for $50 total that day. I never pay more than
half price for shoes at that store.

Yeah, the high-level waste fuel material. The lower-grade stuff is

 1. I have had a thump, thump when applying the brakes.

If there's no visible brake problem, you could have something loose
like a wheel bearing or brake rotor. Try disabling the ABS, an easy
way would be to pull the overvoltage relay and take a quick test drive.

Oh, and the four-speed automatic does not have a torque
converter, only a fluid coupling. (Not sure that means
anything, other than it has a low first gear to make
up for it.)

The dual Zenith carbs, when they're working right, work
very well. They also are fairly trouble-free if they're
not broken. It can be hard to find somebody who knows
how to put them right, however. But once right they
ought to stay that way for quite awhile. (And yours
may be just fine.)

I never understood the idea behind lifetime brake pads and shoes.
Something must wear. If not the pad and shoes; the rotors and drums will
wear. The whole point of a pad or shoe is to have something
sacrificial that is easily replaced. I prefer replacing pads and shoes
to rotors and drums.

I am of the form should follow function school, so I think a truck
should look like a...truck. While I am not experienced in the psychology
of design, I do think certain forms evoke definite emotions from us. I
am sure good designers have (or should have) studied this. I am not sure
what emotions they hare hoping to evoke from us with some of the current
designs such as the Element. Maybe they want us to think of our happier

Hi Trampas,
I tried the kicking method - no luck - then I looked for the fuse. I
found
the main GP 80A fuse directly in front (bumper side) of the master fuse

box - at least I believe it's the main fuse for the GPs. Then I looked
inside the master fuse box - the label said the fan motor was outside
the
fusebox. But I haven't found it. Along side the fuse box is a plug
type
affair - I unplugged it and it looks like an aluminum male plug going
into a
alum female receptacle. Does that have anything to do with it?

I'm getting ready to search my workshop manuals The Bible for info
on
RR'ing the motor/cage along with any fuse location info - but they
kinda
assume the reader is able to find fuses! ;-\

I'd like to change it myself - for the satisfaction. And I'll know how
to
do it next time - I plan to keep this car a long time. It just turned
107k - it wasn't driven regularily before we bought it last Feb - so I
think
these kinds of problems are inevitable - but should be fixed easily.

Thanks again for sharing your hands-on experience !

Try kicking under the passenger dash. Usually the brushes on the
blower
motor goes bad around 150k miles. Kicking under the passenger dash
will
 make
it work for a bit longer, at least long enough to call Rusty.

Also check fuse under hood on driver's fender, it is not with other
fuses
but in it's own black case. If it is good order a spare from Rusty and

 keep
in dash, they will eventually fail due to vibration.

Note the blower motor can be ordered with or with out squirrel cage. I

 order
with out, which is cheaper, then use an air hammer to remove squirrel
 cage.
To do this hold squirrel cage and use air hammer on motor shaft, old
otor
will fall to ground. I have done about 6 blower motors this way and
have
 never broken plastic squirrel cage.

 Howdy -
 Have 2 problems - 1st, the blower fan in the ACC system stopped today;
naturally it's in the low 90s. I seem to recall it hesitating - for
maybe
 2

seconds, then it started blowing normally. I confirmed the compressor
is
engaged.. Also checked the fuses and outside temp indicator - both
were
 normal.

Any suggestions? from reading the WSM it seems like I would need
remove
 the

glove box to get to the fan. I plan to check connections if I can
figure
out what I need to check - a loose wire would explain the short delay
before the fan came on. Unfortunately, today, the fan didn't come on
at
 all.

2nd problem - the ACC Wiring Diagrams section 83-606, should have my
 wiring
diagram. But after going thru the pages 3 times I believe they're
missing
the 124.128 chassis - perhaps there's another similar chassis that
works?
Or perhaps the WDs for the ACC are still on the internet somewhere?

Did you try wiggling the ignition key a bit? I had to move mine back a
bit from full ON position to get the ACC to work.

 Hi Trampas,
I tried the kicking method - no luck - then I looked for the fuse. I
 found
the main GP 80A fuse directly in front (bumper side) of the master
fuse

box - at least I believe it's the main fuse for the GPs. Then I
looked
inside the master fuse box - the label said the fan motor was outside
 the

And I'll know
how
 to
do it next time - I plan to keep this car a long time. It just
turned
107k - it wasn't driven regularily before we bought it last Feb - so I
 think
these kinds of problems are inevitable - but should be fixed easily.

Thanks again for sharing your hands-on experience !

 ;-)

Try kicking under the passenger dash. Usually the brushes on the
 blower
motor goes bad around 150k miles. Kicking under the passenger dash
 will
 make
it work for a bit longer, at least long enough to call Rusty.

Also check fuse under hood on driver's fender, it is not with other
 fuses
but in it's own black case. If it is good order a spare from Rusty
and

 keep
in dash, they will eventually fail due to vibration.

 Howdy -
Have 2 problems - 1st, the blower fan in the ACC system stopped
today;
naturally it's in the low 90s. I seem to recall it hesitating - for
 maybe
 2

seconds, then it started blowing normally. I confirmed the
compressor
 is
engaged.. Also checked the fuses and outside temp indicator - both
 were
 normal.

Any suggestions? from reading the WSM it seems like I would need
 remove
 the

glove box to get to the fan. I plan to check connections if I can
 figure
out what I need to check - a loose wire would explain the short
delay
before the fan came on.

 TIA --

Look in the Old Engines groups. Lots of them are tinkering with old
generators.

I just picked up an old Onan Generator. Anyone have ideas on
availability of information for something like this?
The fellow I got it from talked about a group on the net that were
interested. I wasn't quick enough to ask for
details. I assumed it had to be a Yahoo group or something easy to find.
I have done a little bit of looking and
not come up with anything positive. Will keep looking but thought I
would ask if any of you knowledgeable folks had
run across such in your various travels.
