My Porsche hasn't had a cat since 1985 or so and always passes emissions easily. There are no visual inspections here My car was a factory delivery and since unleaded gas was not universally available in Europe in 1983, it was delivered without a cat or O2 sensor so it could use leaded Super. When I returned it to Porsche to ship home, the US exhaust system with cat and sensor was installed (for a fee). I removed the US system later and installed a Euro system (with different headers and a muffler where the cat had been) so as to eliminate a part throttle lean surge by running the idle at 2% CO. Later, as an experiment I had a port installed to reinstall the sensor but now only plug it in for biannual emission testing. Because the Motronic has an Autothority chip in it, passing without leaning it out and plugging in the sensor can be iffy. I would never destroy an original Porsche part (the cat) because someday I might need it although the car has had it's last emission test anyway. It is waiting in the garage. Re: [MBZ] 944
The 944 was a pretty reliable engine if serviced according to the book. 150,000-200,000 miles between overhauls not a big deal. Belts do need to be kept on top of, but that's true of any interference engine. I watched a couple of friends do the belts, and it's not a really big job. Best to invest in, or rent a proper belt tension gauge though, not rely on the old quarter twist method. hee hee. I've not heard of any real problems with the balance shaft. Not a car I would mess around trying to do an engine conversion on. The inline 4 is a good engine, and lots of used ones about, so why mess about trying to fit apples with oranges The 944 uses two balance shafts bolted to the outside of the engine, driven by one toothed belt. The cam is also driven by a toothed belt and the failure of one can and usually does take out the other followed by destruction of the valves and maybe the head. It's twice as bad in the twincam versions. The belts themselves are dirt cheap but it takes a lot of labor time to change them. And, the factory P-9201 tool is the best way to tension them correctly. It's always advised when buying a used 944 that if there is no paperwork to document how long the belts have been in the car, change them immediately. My 944, at 55000 miles will be getting new belts soon because even though they have only about 7000 miles on them, they were installed in 1998 and are the third set since new. Cautious owners tension the belts at each 10K mile point and change them at around 30K miles. I'm sure plenty of them have gone much further but it's just not worth the risk. Later models with so called automatic tensioning are safe to go longer. As to engine swaps, I concur that trying to install some iron GM lump would be foolish. But, a local Porsche indy has installed an all aluminum Pontiac V-8 (LS something or other, I suppose) and a 944 Turbo 5-speed transmission in a 1987 944. He built a custom single exhaust system and had to heavily modify the oil pan. The engine fits nicely but the lateral clearance at the back is about an inch. I have driven this car and it's a lot of fun and goes like stink. It weighs about forty pounds more than stock so handling is not compromised. I realize we don't need 3000 SQ. Ft, but.. Unlike the rest, I completely understand why you want to move. Space and room for future use is one good reason. [MBZ] Checklist? Huh?
Got Thrust? Start Engine First As the NTSB continues its discussion of pilot professionalism this week, it might consider the performance of two crews who, on separate occasions, neglected to start the second engine before attempting takeoff. The Wall Street Journal reported that both incidents occurred in regional jets, the first last year as an American Eagle Embraer lined up at Los Angeles for a short flight to San Diego. When the crew advanced the throttles, one engine failed to respond and when they taxied back to the gate to report it, mechanics informed the crew that the engine had never been started. A similar incident occurred last March at Dulles, again in an Embraer operated by Trans States Airlines. Once again, according to the Journal story, the crew noticed the inert second engine only when the thrust levers were moved forward for the takeoff. To save fuel, some airlines routinely taxi on a single engine, then start the second before takeoff. In the first incident, the second officer evidently became distracted by radio calls during the start sequence and failed to notice that the second engine hadn't lighted. Both airlines were or are investigating the incidents. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I usually do that because I neglect to get the alignment before the tires, but have never planned it that way! However, if the car is in the air for the alignment, I don't see how tires would make a difference... Since alignments are done with the car on it's wheels, I suspect you misspoke. And since alignments are a nuts-and-bolts mechanical adjustment, tires cannot change that. Re: [MBZ] fwd:hacking
.RLE: Real life data for me, 39 years of driving diesel cars with mechanical injection, primarily Mercedes Benz. Utterly reliable. Hundreds of thousands of miles, maybe approaching a million of reliable service. That is real life data So then, all of the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of posts on the MB lists talking about cam chains, tensioners, head gaskets, bent rods, injectors, glow plugs, prechambers, algae and on and on are imaginary? But those are just general common MB diesel problems. The ones related to mechanical diesel injection such as the drive chain, the injectors and the prechambers and glow plugs all fail and even the pumps themselves have problems if we can believe the owners looking for help here. Your idea of utterly reliable seems a bit..flexible. Every gasser MB I have owned, I have had the pleasure() of replacing the electronic black box. THAT is also real life data Well, my 116, 202, 203 and 204 all had/have one form or another of electronic injection and there were zero repairs to those components during my ownership. I will admit that the little ignition box in my '72 250 did die soon after I sold the car to a friend at 65K miles. Further, my '84 944, now nearly 27 years in my garage, has never had one single problem with either it's ignition or fuel systems and it's a second year Motronic. I did pull the injectors for rebuild about two years ago which consisted of cleaning out the internal muck and seeing that they operated properly and they then performed as new, as did the engine. I remember back when Ritter had his shop and was forever praising on his list the older cars that made him a wealthy man with never anything good to say about the later stuff. Now that's he's ten years out of the business, he is a bit more candid and isn't afraid to say good things about MB progress. He has also admitted that his 6.3 (about which we heard plenty of praise in those days) was seriously underbraked and could be a handful in a fast corner due to it's swing axle.. My wife and I have been looking at houses and if we are driving very slowly through a neighborhood or idling a lot, the temp gets pretty high. As soon as I get back on the road going normal speeds, the temp drops down. It seems like that means the fan isn't coming on. I have noticed it on once or twice when I got home and pulled into the driveway, I can hear the aux fan (I think)... The aux fan runs when the AC is on, for one thing. My '95 C280 worked this way. They are just revealing their ignorance. I have previously complained about a fully restored vehicle when all it's had is a cheap repaint and a good vacuuming. Re: [MBZ] The value of ABS
I really don't understand why you don't just fix it. It's a safety system with proven worth - why not repair it? Except on loose surfaces, where ABS can actually do more harm than good. (Such as fresh snow or slush, or gravel, or [like the road immediately outside our driveway] a steep gravel road often covered in fresh snow or slush!) ABS is nice enough, but once it starts acting up so that you can no longer trust the brakes, and the easy/obvious repair attempts don't work, then I say that I'd rather disable it than mistrust the brakes, or dump thousands for new ABS parts into a car that cost less than that in the first place. -- Jim.. I'm going to have to disagree with this and here's why. I am now on my fifth ABS equipped Mercedes since 1985 and it's value under 99% of low traction conditions has been proven to me let's say, a time or two. The ONLY malfunction I've ever seen was a one time failure in my '89 190E 2.6 on a twenty degree morning after a big snowfall the day before. The ABS light came on, indicating a fault caused shutdown, which cured itself later that day, never to return. If one reads the road tests of new cars in the German magazines and look at their braking test categories, they test on dry and wet surfaces plus snow and ice if available and under split mu conditions. They publish numbers for these tests with the brakes both hot and cold. ABS can really pay off when you might have a road surface with sand, loose gravel or snow/ice on part of it (near the edges, usually) with the rest wet or dry. The stopping distances between makes can be substantial. It's true that some Audis used to have an ABS shutdown switch for stopping in loose snow or gravel (who drives in loose gravel, really?) and the value of pushing a wedge of something ahead of non-rotating tires can be seen. My 26.5 year old Porsche doesn't have ABS and when I drive it in the rain (almost never if I can help it) I have to keep in mind that it just can't stop as fast on wet pavement as my MB at freeway speeds. After an episode of locked and sliding front wheels and not much speed reduction, I got the message. A car with full traction control must have working ABS because it's part of the whole package. Re: [MBZ] wasser
.No MB diesel came out of the factory with a water separator? maybe so. certainly none for the US market after 1960 or so had a separate device called a water separator. However EVERY MB diesel has a well designed filter that pulls fuel off the TOP effectively trapping up to 8 oz or so of water That may be your theory but in practice it doesn't work worth a damn. I dunno, maybe all that nailing from enlarged injector holes is music to your ears and you consider it normal. I did not. I bought my '78 300D new and during the warranty period (that's the first 50K miles) my dealer replaced thirteen injectors, or later on, injector tips, because of excess diesel rattle. Caused by small amounts of water, they said. And the warranty claims were approved because MB knew damn well that water could get into the injectors. Just about the time the warranty ended, I became aware of water separators and the Racor in particular. I bought one, fabricated a steel bracket for the left fender well for it and from that day on the noises caused by water damaged injector tips were gone forever. I drove it another 70K miles. Just to save some effort here, please, no advice about buying from high volume stations or keeping the tank full to reduce condensation or any other standard advice. Oh, and please don't mention Marshall's comments on the subject. I know that the Fox was a dreadful car with the reliability of a five dollar nuclear bomb. Just a plain-ass little FWD 2-door with no redeeming qualities. The 924 Turbo, a rolling hand grenade with turbo and exhaust problems that would put one in the poor house, had about the same performance as the later NA 944 without the reliability. When the 924S showed up in 1988, it seemed to answer a question unasked. It used the current 944 drivetrain in the old 924 narrow body so looked old even when new. The interior, with the old manual AC, was like the early 944. The 924 was slow and noisy although it handled well. The first ones were 4-speeds and rode like hobby horses, pitching for and aft. These cars were competitors to the 240Z at the same price. We all know what a big success the 240Z was and maybe the main reason people bought 924s was the badge on the nose. No, it is not a good thing. No tinfoil-hattery is necessary to perceive the manifest safety issues. As has been amply demonstrated here and elsewhere in discussion of the runaway-Toyota issue, anyone but the driver having a say in when a car should be turned off (or on) is a recipe for trouble... The discussions here have no bearing on the question since the participants have no technical knowledge of the system. And the media publicity is mostly a combination of uninformed speculation and denials by Toyota. When all this is boiled down to a proven cause, then we will know. A TV interview this AM on ABC with the driver and the CHP trooper involved reveals: The driver, perhaps a typical Pious (I like that) driver said that he took his recall notice to a Toyota dealer who turned him away, saying that his car was not involved. Thus, no fix was done. Soon after, the car took off on it's own on the interstate and repeated efforts to shut it down (he claims) failed and the brakes were ineffective. So, he dials 911, believe it or not, telling the CHP about the problem while steering. A CHP car caught up with the Pious which was doing about 90mph. The trooper, in an interview I watched, said he could smell the brakes and pulled alongside, yelling at the driver (on his loudspeaker) to apply the parking brake along with the wheel brakes which worked somewhat and when the car slowed to about 40mph he was able to shut down the engine. The trooper said he had considered getting in front to stop the car but did not although he did block it after the whole event was over. The Pious driver said he was never going to drive the thing again as it was flatbedded away. Probably the most exciting day the Pious driver ever had. The dealer employee who brushed off the Pious owner has a problem, methinks. These days, what with a clutchless variable flow swashplate AC compressor, a variable flow cooling thermostat and a 17 7-blade electric fan,all controlled by the main brain, the HVAC system is truly set it and forget it. Re: [MBZ] good maintenance
.Your friend has accomplished quite a feat, to preserve a 1979 ML320. It belongs in a museum I saw it just yesterday and it looks six months old. He formerly owned a trucking company and his last Kenworth, sold two years ago, looked about the same which was remarkable considering it's nearly million miles on the odo. He also has owned since new a mid '70s (I think) GM pickup which is a time capsule. Re: [MBZ] so useful
Woger, If you call Rusty, he not only can get anything you need for your MB, he might even be able to supply parts for your front porche and your back porche (or any other porche you may have).. Hi dopey... It just so happens that I have sourced a few items for my cars (shocks, halfshaft, filters etc) over time and was well satisfied with the prices and the prompt deliveries. I just don't feel the need to post my shopping lists here, that's all. The only order they had trouble with was the first one which was due to an employee's inability to read. Could have been Hurst in those days. Re: [MBZ] DeLorean facts??
...Anyway 2 cases he cites to further his stories are Tucker and Delorean. Well until I said But Keith, the Delorean was crap. I followed with A fiberglass body and stainless steel cladding plus a poorly made underpowered GM V6... He shut up quick on that one... It certainly wasn't a GM engine, but a P-R-V. And I've seen a red one. ...Mitched: Oh, then I'm really an idiot. I thought the 320s were V6 and the 300s were I6... No, you are not. The 2007 Bluetec V-6 is badged E320 but it's not a 3.2. Weren't the inline sixes badged CDI? The Bluetec for the US market isn't. Some have allowed as how as Bilsteins last forever but I'm thinkin their standards are in the cellar. Hello to the old lady. Hope them burns from when the still blew up are mostly healed. Re: [MBZ] early 190E
don't know anything about the car, but did find this in the technical data book: 190E 2.3, 201 .028, 102.985 engine, the tranny is 717.412, Engine has 9:1 compressioin ratio, 6k rpm max., 136 hp @ 5100 rpm, 151 lb./ft. torque @ 3500 rpm, premuim fuel. rear axle is 3.27:1, 0-62 mph in 10.6 sec., top speed is 122.4 mph, curb weight is 2690 lb. Fueleconomy.gov says 17 mpg. city and 24 mpg hwy. I bought one of these things new and even the dealer agreed that it was one on the least reliable cars MB ever built. You name it, the warranty replaced it. But, these are just another old banger now and should be as reliable as anything else of the same age since most parts have been changed. Fuel mileage is closer to 20/28. My 89 190E 2.6 was vastly better but of course wasn't a patch on my '08. ...How can you not know by now that a large portion of Rusty's stock is not on the website. We talk about this nearly every single week... Because not all of the trivia on this list is memorized by me. And to be specific, the W204 (all models) uses one 24 type of blade, period. Re: [MBZ] 201 wheels
...Nope, early 201's had 14 15 hole wheels. Bundts stopped in USA in 1985 Which is what I said without mentioning the hole count. The early '85 (until January production) was still really an '84 with the small wheels and no articulating wiper arm plus a lot of other changes including in the engine. Re: [MBZ] Oil subbing
...I think they make the aircraft oil red because it goes in the brakes so that when it is checked it can be seen to be the right stuff. Don't you need almost 4 quarts of oil to completely replace all the oil in the system?.. Urine can be substituted in a emergency. An aircraft crew carries it with them at all times. Re: [MBZ] 600 parts costs
According to a recently retired (after 38 years) tech at my dealer, the heater panel (a row of buttons) cost is ten grand. He tended for years to a 50K mile black 600 SWB that I would see in the service department from time to time. I had the opportunity to look at the bottom side once when it was in drydock on the lift. Made my Visa card tremble. He also did what had to be done on a few 108 Cabs which also can deplete your holdings. I am puzzled by the resentment and disdain shown here by a few toward cars of this sort. I am glad that those who have the resources to maintain and enjoy them do so because when I see a well kept example of an important MB, it's my pleasure. As a motorcycle rider, I find some dark humour in the fact that his helmet didn't save him. (No helmet laws in Iowa.).. Uhhh, luge is feet first. Tonight's TV news showed the accident happening. Re: [MBZ] website parts
The web site is driven by one vendor, I have access to everything. If you don't see it on the web just call. We have it This week I decided I finally needed a pair of wiper blades for my '08 W204. But, no joy. None of the blades shown are for a W204. So I went to the dealer and after 5 minutes or so of CPR, I got up and paid the bill. Almost laughable. Re: [MBZ] Canepa
...Ought to be a crime to slap a bunch of tuner crap onto such a rarecar. Who are these Canepa people? Surely a 959 is going to be less valuable as a collectible (not to mention as a piece of Porsche history) if it's been modified by anyone, with the possible exception of RUF. First, look at this: http://www.canepa.com/trans/difference.html Canepa originated body kits for highway tractors long ago and now they are everywhere. Then, google Bruce Canepa for the rest of it. The 959 was never Federalized and so only heavy hitters such as Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Otis Chandler smuggled them into the US but had to hide them until they were caught by US Customs later. Canepa designed a federalization program which enabled them to be registered and driven here.
