,,,Speaking of such - panic, and all, I just reads this in the NYT ---

Nearly all of the millions of flights that take off and land each year
proceed safely, without incident. Any number of accidents can (but rarely
do) put a flight in jeopardy: from engine failure, to the sudden
 apparition
of a flock of geese, to electrical storms, to ice, to air pockets

That's it. The reference to 'air pockets invalidates the whole article.
People like this think there are two kinds of airplanes, Piper Cubs and 747s.

Re: [MBZ] your dent

2010-01-06 Thread RELNGSON
..BIG SNIP..BTW, I don't want to be made rich, I was just
curious about the used door thing.  The nearest dealer is two hours away,
and I really don't want to fool with getting the car there and back for the
 body work

Look, you are going about this bass-ackwards. If you have chosen a body
shop that can do the job that you require, get an estimate from them FIRST, And
by the way, before the shop or your company sees the car, clean it up. And
I mean clean. A clean car makes a big impression on those who have to work
on it whether it's mechanical or body work and they will do a better job. If
you bring in a dirty car with black wheels and crap all over the carpets,
your question about paint matching will fall on deaf ears.

And taking it to a dealer for body work is no guarantee of anything and in
fact most of them don't have a body shop and will farm it out, adding their
profit to the bill.

Your comment about letting your own company's adjuster decide what the
repair cost is before the body shop sees it can be bad because what the company
does when the shop calls to tell them that it will cost more, the answer is
If you want any more business from us, you will accept our price. Farmer's
Insurance (for one) has done this and the quality of the repairs reflect
it.

Changing the door will cost far more than repairing it.

I wonder how attractive bio-diesel is going to be now that the $1.00 per
gallon federal subsidy (paid to the refiners) expired on 12/31. A local
producer stated in a small newspaper article this week that he was receiving
$48000 per week from the Feds and thought that passing along the buck a gallon
increase might effect sales.

Just yesterday I glanced over at the bio pump at my card-op station and the
price was $3.63 per gallon.

Does optional vs standard make a difference? Rear side bags are an

About $700 (a guess) is the difference. My W203 2001 C320 had four door
bags and curtain bags as standard. TeleAid was also standard.

For the W204 rear bags became an option as did TeleAid. I skipped both. The
side bags are now in the side of the front seat and fire forward. In some
markets the driver gets a knee bag but not here.

I would think the W212 arrangement would be the same. Crash tests (barrier

In the W202, the battery is in the trunk with a vent line overboard. The
W203's is under the hood. The W204's is under the hood except the diesels
where it's in the trunk on a big mounting plate next to the spare tire. The
mounting in the trunk is present but not used in my W204 gasser. I think a big
fat copper battery cable from a rear mounted battery up to the starter is a
significant cost, also.

A while back when I thought I'd eyeball the electrolyte level, I was
surprised to see that the battery is sealed. So, no maintenance and it either

The optional black glass Panorama roofs on the current cars are even larger
although they don't slide. I skipped it on my present car mostly because of
the nooks and crannies where dust could accumulate when the roof was tilted

on top of the roof. There is a second non opening glass over the rear seat

[MBZ] Another SAAB story

2009-12-30 Thread RELNGSON

General Motors has apparently extended its December 31 deadline to sell its
Saab brand while continuing the 'orderly wind-down' process. A Saab
spokesman also told just-auto today that the firm plans to resume the
production of
cars from January 11.
GM said on December 18 that it would begin the wind-down of the brand
after a proposed sale to Netherlands-based exotic sports car maker Spyker had
hit due diligence problems. Spyker had emerged as a leading bidder for Saab
following the withdrawal of Koenigsegg as preferred bidder in November.
However, following GM's Saab wind-down announcement, Spyker submitted a
revised bid amid some uncertainty over the status of GM's original December 31
sale deadline. Reports suggest that the end-year Saab sale deadline has now
been dropped.
Spyker Cars CEO Victor Muller told Reuters today that GM had extended the
deadline for a final offer from Spyker Cars until January 7. Muller added he
believed there are multiple bidders for Saab.
Saab spokesman Eric Greer told just-auto today that GM had decided to
initiate the wind-down process while at the same time evaluating bids.
When GM will communicate the outcome of the evaluation we don't know, he
said.
He also confirmed that Saab will start meeting customer orders and will
start producing cars from January 11.
Publicly, GM executives have declined to identify their problems with
Spyker, but several officials familiar with the private negotiations have said
GM was troubled by Spyker's reliance on Russian loans to finance the deal, as
well as the fate of Saab's proprietary technology under Spyker. The biggest
investor in Spyker is the Russian bank Convers Group.
Another snag has been the question of whether Spyker could win a loan from
the European Investment Bank.
Earlier this month, Saab also announced that it had closed on the sale of
some 9-3, current 9-5 and powertrain technology and tooling to Beijing
Automotive Industry Holdings (BAIC), a move that raised much-needed cash for
the
beleaguered brand.
The news that the Trollhattan plant is planning a production resumption
and that negotiations with Spyker (and possibly other bidders) are not yet
dead will keep hopes alive in Sweden that a deal can be concluded early in the
new year to keep Saab going - in some form - under a new owner.

The Douglas DC-9 morphed into the MD-80 (McDonnell-Douglas) and successors
(MD-83) and when the Boeing/McDonnell-Douglas merger occurred, the
remaining production M-D series were renamed Boeing 717 etc. I think American
had
more MD-80 and MD-83s than anyone but all their MD-series were to be

The 737-800 that was demolished in Jamaica yesterday was an American

[MBZ] Chinese Volvos

2009-12-23 Thread relngson
 SWEDEN: Ford confirms Volvo sale

 23 December 2009 | Source: just-auto.com editorial team
Ford confirmed on Wednesday that all substantive commercial terms
relating to the potential sale of Volvo Car Corporation have been settled
between
Ford and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company.
While some work still remains to be completed before signing - including
final documentation, financing and government approvals - Ford and Geely
anticipate that a definitive sale agreement will be signed in the first quarter
of 2010, with closing of the sale likely to occur in the second quarter
2010, subject to appropriate regulatory approvals, the automaker said in a
statement.
The prospective sale would ensure Volvo has the resources, including the
capital investment, necessary to further strengthen the business and build
its global franchise, while enabling Ford to continue to focus on and
implement its core ONE Ford strategy.
While Ford would continue to cooperate with Volvo Cars in several areas
after a possible sale, the company does not intend to retain a shareholding in
the business post-sale.
More details will be made available once the expected definitive sale
agreement is signed in the first quarter of 2010, Ford added.
Geely was named as the favoured bidder for Volvo in October and the two
companies had been said earlier to be ready to lay out an estimated timeline
for completing the sale in a statement to be issued today.
Volvo was put up for sale a year ago as Ford shed its overseas luxury
brands to focus on the blue oval brand.
Geely is understood to be offering about US$2bn, less than one-third what
Ford paid for the Swedish unit a decade ago.
People close to the talks told Bloomberg News ahead of the Ford
announcement Geely was also planning to build a Volvo factory in China after
the
purchase is completed. Beijing is the most likely location although the Chinese
carmaker is also considering two other cities for the facility.
Ford and Geely are still finalising details and resolving sale issues such
as protection of intellectual property. Geely wants to gain insights into
western vehicle development and manufacturing through Volvo, people familiar
with the negotiations have said.
Intellectual property protection was a stumbling block in the takeover
because Ford will continue supplying components following a sale. Geely Group
said last month the Swedish company would retain ownership of technology
following the sale.
Geely is seeking Chinese government support for the Volvo acquisition and
has hired German-based Roland Berger Strategy Consultants for advice on
restructuring.

Re: [MBZ] lichten

So why do so many of the cars I see with projector lights absolutely
blind me with glare at night, whilst conventional headlights do not?

A lot of reasons can be considered. Misadjusted light units. Cheap high
wattage bulbs, white or bluish for the rice rocket crowd. Xenon or Bi-Xenons
without OEM self levelling (required by Federal standards) or aftermarket
Xenons installed in conventional lamps. Or any Ford truck built in the last
twenty years.

Another reason for glare is aging eyesight to include the beginnings of a
cataract or simply the need for a new prescription.

About ten years ago I got a new glasses prescription and immediately began
seeing stars around oncoming headlights and night driving was worse than
before. My Opthalmologist made a small change to the prescription and all was
normal once more.

You may need new glasses.

Another problem with the projection lamps is that they don't,
obviously, have the shield over the filament (other other light
source) that removes the stray light coming off the source at an
acute angle to the edge of the lamp (read glare)...

This does not apply to Xenons or Bi-Xenons.

Re: [MBZ] steering shafts

2009-12-17 Thread RELNGSON
If you spike the steering wheel so they have to look at it all the
time, it might have deterrent value. By the time the steering shaft comes
flying back at them, it's too late to change their driving habits

About ten years back, my friend CB moved back to Tacoma from Bend OR and he
needed to get the remaining two of his cars home. So three of us set off
from Tacoma in his Diesel Suburban (Banks Turbo) with the enclosed car trailer
in tow. We stopped at his hangar at the Bend airport where the Cad-Allard
and the '49 Super 88 convert were stored before heading to the hotel. The
Allard went into the trailer and I drove the Oldsmobile.

The Olds was one of those light green ones with the dark green leather
interior and a black top. Sort of a Saturday night parade car. The big steering
wheel had a half-round hub pointing right at my chest and I knew the other
end was right out front. With the way it drove, I am convinced those Daytona
Beach race drivers were real heroes because although it moved right along,
changing direction was not it's strong suit. Anything over 70mph meant
playing close attention to piloting the thing.

I did remember to put the Hydra-Matic in reverse when parking it.

Definition: Morbidity is an incidence of ill health. It is measured in
various ways, often by the probability that a randomly selected individual in a
population at some date and location would become seriously ill in some
period of time.

Seatbelt usage reduces the chance of injury or death. There is no question
about that.

And anyone who does not use the available safety equipment in their car is
a fool. Further, in some states failure to use it in a crash is judged to be
contributory negligence.

No W211 diesels have used Urea at this point. The W212 Diesel will show up

miles and get back to me with the service history. And the resale value, while
you are at it.

Who are the European makers you refer to? Not Mercedes, I'll bet, and the
rest of them were on the ropes before Hyundai ceased to be a Korean shitbox
which is just recently.

BMW buyers wouldn't consider a Hyundai, even the beginners. And the rest,
Jaguar, SAAB and Volvo can't blame their problems on Korea. The people who
would buy a Genesis are the leasers who go for the make dujour on their next

[MBZ] Korean car lovers weep...

SOUTH KOREA: Court postpones Ssangyong fate decision

 11 December 2009 | Source: just-auto.com editorial team
A court decision on the future of debt-burdened SUV specialist Ssangyong
Motor was on Friday delayed until 17 December after a revised rescue package
failed to win approval from creditors. The court will decide on whether to
approve the plan or liquidate Ssangyong.
Ssangyong, which has debts totalling KRW1.23 trillion (US1.05bn ), last
month submitted a plan to shareholders that it hoped would save it from
failure. That plan was rejected by the creditors, forcing the revision, news
agency AFP noted.
The latest offer would see its biggest shareholder, China's SAIC Motor,
having its 51% holding cut to 11.2% through a five-for-one writedown. Other
shareholders would face a three-for-one reduction.
That plan was also rejected Friday, leaving the fate of the carmaker with
the Seoul Central District Court.
Ssangyong spokesman Choi Jin-Woong told AFP: Our rehabilitation package
failed to win approval again due to opposition from foreign creditors. We
hope the court will push through our plan next week, he said.
A Ssangyong source told just-auto insiders were still confident the
automaker wouldn't be allowed to fail.

the Museum and is under restoration for eventual public viewing but because
of wing spar corrosion will never fly nor will the engines be started. It
will be electrically functional including gun aiming and movement. The B-17,

[MBZ] Daimler shift sparks union concerns

2009-12-04 Thread RELNGSON
Daimler shift sparks union concerns
This week’s decision by Daimler to shift parts of the future production of
its best selling Mercedes C-Class sedan to the US exposes the mismatch
between large domestic footprints and global sales of many German industrial
companies.

Daimler said earlier this week that it would centralise German production
of the C-Class in Bremen and would start assembling the next generation of
the model in its Tuscaloosa plant in the US from 2014.

The plan was a blow to its 94-year-old Sindelfingen plant, where the
C-Class will no longer be produced, and highlighted how managers are looking to
expand plants in regions with low labour costs and weak currencies.

Less than 25 per cent of Daimler’s sales are generated in its home country,
but Daimler continues to employ about 60 per cent of its 273,000 workers in
Germany.

Rival carmakers and other large German industrial groups also lag behind in
moving production to low-cost countries. Siemens, Europe’s largest
engineering group, is one example.

“Siemens’ manufacturing and headcount are heavily weighted towards
Germany, which accounts for 17 per cent of sales but 27 per cent of Siemens’
production and 31 per cent of total employment,” said Andreas Willi, analyst at
JPMorgan. “Addressing the industrial footprint ... would be a key value driver”
 for Siemens, Mr Willi said.

Given many companies’ lopsided production footprint, Daimler’s decision
this week sparked anxiety among German unions.

IG Metall mobilised more than 10,000 Daimler workers on Wednesday against
the move. Thanks to the weak dollar, workers in Alabama earn about €30 ($45)
an hour, which compares with about €50 in Germany.

Other premium carmakers such as BMW and Audi have been producing sports
utility vehicles and smaller models in eastern Europe and other low-cost
regions for a while. They have also started to spread production of their
smallest
sedans such as the C-Class around the world. Daimler is producing the
C-Class at its South African plant and in China.

Daimler’s arch-rival BMW is producing its 3 series sedan – which is
comparable to the C-Class – mainly in Germany but also at its South African and
Chinese plants.

BMW does not plan to produce the model in the US because it can import it
from South Africa without suffering from the two factors that make imports to
the US expensive: the weak dollar and tariffs.

South Africa’s rand is pegged to the dollar and there are no trade barriers
between the two countries.

But BMW has also ramped up production of its roadster and sports-utility
models in the US. Norbert Reithofer, BMW’s chief executive, said: “We already
made this decision two years ago when we agreed to lift production in our
Spartanburg plant to 240,000 units.”

Christoph Stürmer, analyst at IHS Global Insight, said that more than
anything else, the decision showed the dire state of Daimler’s US plant. “The
plant in Alabama is running far below capacity so Daimler had to do something
about that,” he said.

Mr Stürmer said that in spite of the skewed manufacturing footprint, he did
not expect a wave of production shifts of the more expensive premium models
from Germany to low-cost countries.

“Germany has a high competency for complex products in small series, which
makes up for cost disadvantages,” he said.

Re: [MBZ] Museum of Flight

2009-12-04 Thread RELNGSON
 Dieselhead (?) challenges:

 What is the location?

The Museum is located on East Marginal Way south at the SW corner of Boeing
Field adjacent to the touchdown zone of runway 31L. It is on property
formerly owned by the Port of Seattle which owns the airport. Boeing does not
own
the airport or the Museum. It has, however, provided all kinds of support,
financial and otherwise and continues to do so.. For example, when the
Museum's Concorde (on permanent loan from BA) arrived, Boeing provided the
personnel and tugs to move it to it's temporary and later permanent parking
spots.
Their crash trucks were also on hand until it was shutdown for the last
time. I was there.

.tell us what is the red barn?...

It is the original Boeing factory originally located on the Duwamish River
upon which it was barged upstream and then moved across country a short
distance to it's permanent location as a wing of the new Museum building.

What is the name of the airport adjacent?..

The official name is King County International Airport but it's been called
Boeing Field since the thirties (at least) by all including the FAA. When I
first started flying out of there it was the 13th busiest airport in the
world. So said the sign, at least. Nearly all General Aviation flights.

Always pleased to be of service.

...Same here with my '60 Falcon.  When I first had it I'd have swapped it

I bought an elderly Falcon as an interim car while waiting for my 914-6
which turned out to be five months. It was a '60 in that sort of almost-white,
a 4-door 3 speed. It hummed along just fine once it reached cruising speed.
Of course it had no crash safety whatsoever but who did? I think it was a
170 cubic inch and no idea what the HP may have been. Under 100 for sure.

One of the great things about it was that it cost pennies to repair. I
remember replacing both U-joints one night after dinner in about an hour with
a
few simple hand tools none of which was a torque wrench. Total cost must
have been 10-12 bucks from the autoparts store.

Changed all the brake shoes for about twice that. Wouldn't mind having it
around today.

[MBZ] US built C-Class in 2014

2009-12-03 Thread relngson
This message was sent to all US dealers this morning:

Dear employees

As you know, in the last few weeks we have scrutinized the possible
production locations for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class successor generation from
2014
on. This is our top-selling model series abroad. That is why it is
particularly important to produce it in close proximity to our sales markets.

With the present decision we will bolster the market-based production of
our passenger car models worldwide in due consideration of our responsibility
for Germany as a business location. At the same time, we will be able to
safeguard the jobs of the Sindelfingen employees in C-Class production.

In this context, the Board of Management has decided the following:

The C-Class production for the European market and the model variants will
be combined at the Bremen plant beginning in 2014. Through this bundling, we
are improving our efficiency, reducing costs and bolstering the strength of
the Bremen plant as a center of competence for the C-Class.

From that time on, for the first time, the C-Class will also be produced
at the Tuscaloosa plant for the key NAFTA market. This will enable us to
achieve close-to-market production of the new C-Class sedan independent of
currency fluctuations. At the same time, we can also utilize the existing
capacities at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI). Currently, the local
scopes
account for nearly twenty percent of the C-Class production worldwide.

To enable covering the approx. 20% higher C-Class production volume in the
Bremen plant, the assembly of the SL roadster will be moved from Bremen to
the Sindelfingen plant in return. We will use the resources freed up in
Sindelfingen through the discontinuation of C-Class production to strengthen S
indelfingen as a central technology and research location and worldwide
competence center for the production of premium and luxury class vehicles,
increasingly also with alternative drives.

For the Sindelfingen plant, we have developed a personnel concept for
compensating a substantial portion of the employment effects arising from the
reorganization of C-Class production from 2014 through the assembly of the SL.
The remaining affected employees, which number about 1,800, will also be
offered attractive employment opportunities in the future. This will enable
maintaining the employment of the Sindelfingen employees engaged in C-Class
production. In Bremen, employment will be safeguarded for the long term as a
result of the extended C-Class production.

Due to the high regional demand in China, the capacity for the C-Class
assembly at the Beijing plant is to be expanded as planned.

Along with the future Rastatt-Kecskemét coordinated production system for
our compact vehicles, the C-Class production network will make a decisive
contribution to the even more dedicated use of our resources, thus ensuring
clear and stable future prospects. We currently produce a good 80% of our
vehicles in Western Europe but sell less than 60% there. This gap will continue
to widen over the next few years and our overseas markets will increasingly
gain in importance. That is why we must move our production closer to the
market in order to facilitate an even quicker and more flexible response to
regional customer requirements, utilize customs and logistical advantages and
at the same time eliminate our dependency on currency fluctuations. In
addition, by honing the expertise of our locations, we are reducing the level
of
complexity in our production processes. This is indispensable, particularly
in the price-sensitive and intensely competitive segment of the C-Class.

In this process, Germany will remain the essential core of our production
network. A look at the figures illustrates this. Although we generate “only”
around 28% of our revenues in Germany, 89% of our division’s employees
work here. In addition, we recently announced that we want to invest around €3
billion in the German passenger car locations in 2009 and 2010. That, too,
is another signal for Germany as a business location.

We will explain all other details to the Works Council and elaborate the
effects on the employment situation. Of course, we will keep you informed on
the results and next steps!

 Yours,

 Dieter Zetsche Wilfried
Porth Rainer Schmückl

[MBZ] SAAB fades

2009-12-01 Thread RELNGSON
Saab Automobile on Tuesday faced the threat of closure as the General
Motors board met on Tuesday (1 December, 2009) to hammer out plans after a deal
collapsed to sell the Swedish brand.
Time is running out for Saab after Swedish luxury car maker Koenigsegg
pulled out of bid talks last week, putting in doubt the future of the
loss-making GM unit and analysts have said the most likely outcome is a
closure,
Reuters noted.
The reality is that to try to get someone in at this stage just looks not
feasible, an auto analyst who requested anonymity told the news agency.
There is no further quality offer likely to pop up.
According to the report, Saab and the Swedish government have said other
investors have approached GM regarding Saab, but in light of the US car
maker's vow to drop the brand by early 2010, there is very little time in which
to forge a new deal.
It is clear that they (GM) have to find a solution as quickly as
possible, without high costs and without creating a situation of new
competition,
said professor Christer Karlsson at Copenhagen Business School.
For instance you can't sell it to anybody who wants to sell Saab on the
Chinese market because then it will compete with GM's own products, since the
new Buick [LaCrosse] is more or less the same car as the new Saab.
According to the news agency, Swedish government officials met with GM
this week ahead of the board meeting, which was expected to last all of Tuesday
[EST], to underline that it was ready to provide loan guarantees to a new
owner though it has ruled out taking a stake in Saab.
State secretary Joran Hagglund told Swedish news agency TT after the
meeting with GM in Detroit that he remained hopeful that a closure of the
60-year-old brand might be avoided.
Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp (BAIC), which tied up with
Koeningsegg in October, could still be among the possible contenders to take
over
Saab, which has not made a profit since 2001, Reuters added.
The report noted that Merbanco Merchant Banking, based in Wyoming, has
also said it remains interested in Saab while US financier Ira Rennert and his
Renco Group had also expressed interest in pursuing a deal for Saab before
GM struck a preliminary deal with Koenigsegg earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg News, citing two people familiar with the talks, said
GM may sell parts of Saab to BAIC and shutter the brand.
A sale of assets, including production machinery, was among GM's options,
the sources said.
Beijing Auto plans to move fast on Saab to help improve its technology,
the automaker's president Wang Dazong said yesterday, according to
Bloomberg.
It's very difficult to see a future for Saab, Stefan Bratzel, director
of the Centre of Automotive at the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch
Gladbach, Germany.
Beijing Auto is one of the potential candidates because Chinese
manufacturers are looking for a foothold in Europe and need the
distribution network,
the technology and the brand, he was quoted as saying.
The Wall Street Journal has suggested that Saab might sell BAIC the
tooling for the outgoing 9-5 model, which dates back to the 1980s 9000 model on
a
