need of a paint job. The seats seam springy and the upholstery is pretty

know it's bad) didn't even get a sputter or clunk out of it, so either the
timing's wy off or she's just plain warn out. It is full of oil though.
The vapors from the starting fluid weren't coming out the exhaust which
could be an indication that it is either in need of some serious engine work
or an engine transplant.
The car is actually a 1974 220D according to the title (thought that the
W115 diesels from 1974-76 were 240D's). It has the smaller bumpers and also
a column shift automatic. The vin starts with 115 110.

If the pump is pumping and it is turning over, then the cam is also
turning. If it weren't you would have heard a loud bang and crunching as
the cam and towers broke from a piston driving a valve where the cam used
to be.

If it is a 4 spd, pull start it. I bet it will run. Then try to get the
rings freed up before you drive it like you stole it. Older diesels (621,
615) have a habit of cracking rings, then the cracked rings chew up the
$150 piston and score the cylinder. Pull starting might work on an auto
too. I've never done it.

Snake oil in the tank, soaking gunk in the cylinders.Other can comment as
to what works in the tank and as a cylinder soak. Mopar penetrating oil
works well as a cylinder soak, but you want to get it out after 24 hours.

Good luck!

If you see oozing, my guess is that the pump is ok. if the caps are loose,
you see fuel ooze. if the caps are cracked just right, you will get high
pressure spurts. about 1/16 turn to 1/8 turn is cracking the line.

it is more likely that you have low compression/stuck rings or bad glow
plugs/prechambers or a combination of all.
it is also possible that the rack in the pump is stuck. I have never
encountered this. What year was this? does it have the mechanical
governor? I think all coupes would have the mechanical governor. I am not
sure when they changed over to the mechanical governor from the vacuum. 77
78 may have vacuum. I know some of the early 123s had the swing tube intake.

them started was to pull start them or hook 24V to starter. The problem is
the rings get stuck. Rings are funny things, the more compression on the

The quantity of fuel ejected from the injection line with each cycle of
the injection pump is TINY. If you agree that the engine consumes maybe
a liter an hour at idle. In an hour there are maybe 72,000 injection
pulses from a 240D idling at 600 rpm. That's 1000 ml/72,000 pulses or
about 0.01 ml with each injection pulse. Even if you double or treble
that amount, that's a TINY amount of fuel.

When I put 24V on the starter what I do is disconnect the starter pos
battery terminal from rest of system. Then place second battery between
original and starter cable. Thus the main electrical system, glow plugs etc
are still 12V and the starter is the only 24V thing.

Again it is much much easier to tow start.

If you're referring to the return lines they have little pressure. The
steel lines to the injectors are high pressure. Picking up cylinders
one at a time is normal in cold starts or after running out of fuel.

Have you ever read the cold start procedure in your Owner's Manual?

What's the best way to check the injection pump?

With an injector pump tester. Actually that is best left to those in

The injection pump is a positive-displacement pump. That means it
pushes out a fixed amount of fuel, and the pressure will build to
whatever it needs to to allow that amount to flow.

The upshot is you only actually see 1800 psi if there's an injector on
the other end of the line. If the line is open the pressure will be
essentially 0 and the fuel will just trickle out.

I have, or rather had, one. Its still here though.

Its going to need at least around 270 to start. If you are seeing
figured below 200, into the 100's or even lower, its got stuck rings or
is just plain worn out. If its healthy, you will see well into the 300's.

probably holes in the pistons.

I don't want you to do it for me. I would like to learn on my own. I paid

it from said it had a hole in the block. I have yet to find one.
