Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** McDonald's

2018-12-01 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
Yes, the old days. I grew up the Huntington area of southern WV. The first
McD anywhere around was there. You walked up to the outside window to order.
There was no where to sit so you ate in your car. The restrooms were on the
outside. And they did have two arches, but I like to joke that I've eaten
there since only one arch. It was a great place to take a date after a movie.
Hamburger, fries, and a soft drink were very affordable for a high school kid.

Anyway, McD been good to me. I hope each of you have a fond memory of
somewhere you ate when young.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays,

Roger

I remember when the sign first said one million sold, then many years
later, a billion. I think the first McD sign I saw in 1961 may have
said 250,000 sold. I remember they changed it several times before it
hit a million.

Shall we change the tone of this McD thread? - How about recall your
first McD visit? My first McD was a coupon for filet-o-fish so I rode
to Forest Park ~1963 on my ~1938 Chicago Schwinn that I still ride.
Parkey's hot dogs were also memorable for their fresh fries ($0.10)
served in brown paper bag all greasy salted yum. Also yum was A
Spanish Bar Cake markdown $0.10 - recipe for A Spanish Bar Cake is
online.
Carry on, guys - Roger has asked for a new tone for the McD thread?
... down memory lane? ... perhaps?

I like the McD's breakfast McMuffin things, lots of fat and protein,
salty. Not something to eat often, but I find them non-offensive and
satisfying. Thow in coffee and hashbrown, about $5 or $6 total, away you

Just about everything else on their menu disagrees with my gut, expect once

The oil pressure sensor on top of the engine needs replaced cause it’s weeping,
there is a small exhaust leak. The one thing that is odd is that the passenger
rear tire is bald down to the belts, and the others show expected wear for a
year old. The doofus owner says he’s done nothing to the tire since he bought
them. If it were an alignment issue or a strut issue wouldn’t it drive all
wonky? It drove wonderfully.

sun-dimming aerosols released into earth’s atmosphere.

Research from scientists at Harvard and Yale universities was recently
published in a journal called Environmental Research Letters which
proposes using a technique called stratospheric aerosol injection to
fight against climate change. The proposed technique would see
scientists launching sulfate particles into the Earth’s lower
stratosphere at altitudes up 12 miles high.

Currently, the technology exists but there are no aircraft suitable to
carry the particles and “developing a new, purpose-built tanker with
substantial payload capabilities would neither be technologically
difficult nor prohibitively expensive,” the researchers stated. The
researchers have estimated that it would cost $3.5 billion to launch a
system in 15 years time and would cost $2.25 billion a year to
maintain over the course of those 15 years.

Scientists have proposed a new method to fight global warming:
sun-dimming aerosols released into earth’s atmosphere.

Maybe they would be more likely to have success with fewer unintended
consequences if the obsolete nukes were fed to a few remote volcanos. That
would spew organical products into the air high enough and wide enough to
increase albedo, as well as spread the goodness into the oceans and reduce the
acidity.

The great prophet of all things about to happen has thus spoken

ONE little disconnect from true logic, however, which is a fatal flaw in
all he says... That is the hard wired genetic human need for self
determination. Rather than letting some one of some thing make all
decisions.

I predict this "mad monkey" will destroy all the pie in the sky ideas about
what the future holds.

Well, that, and a few massive solar flairs which wipe out all things
electrical... which is the total basis for all of his ideas.

And that flapping belt transmits the force of those pulses to the power
steering pump and the AC compressor. The very expensive dual-circuit power
steering pump on my '95 E300 developed a crack in the aluminum mount and
also was leaking from the shaft seal at a mere 250k miles, I suspect that
component as well as the serpentine belt tension device / shock / spring
will all last longer with the OAP clutched pulley.

ostensibly to extend the life of the idler bearing on an M 606 beyond a
mere 200-250k miles or ~20 years. With a cost of ~20 if you change the
bearing or what? ~$60 if you replace the assembly? I think the last
assy I bought cost $5 but it was used...While the clutched pulley
gives little warning, and the idler bearing can give years or 10s of
thousands of miles warning. Give me an 87 300SDL or 87300D
please! Keep the accountant designed junkboxes.

In the meantime the clutched pulley owner spent $80 for 2 pulleys, and
$200 for 2 tows and untold frustration and costs of being stranded.

Theres a video on YouTube somewhere that highlights why the pulley is
useful, without an overrunning pulley the belt flaps all over the

Is that a Red Green reference? *smiles*

Sounds to me like maybe it needs de-sulfating/equalizing. This
effectively means a controlled over-charge. It will shorten the
life of the battery - but if it's junk (or nearly so) that's not
much of a risk.

But if you don't have a way to set the charge 16 V, it may not be
practical.

Here is the text of an article on the topic.

~'^`~ ~'^`~ ~'^`~ ~'^`~ ~'^`~ ~'^`~ ~'^`~ ~'^`~
from https://shop.pkys.com/Battery-Equalization_ep_44.html

Battery Equalization

Equalizing lead acid batteries is a process designed to
de-sulphate the battery plates by carrying out a controlled
overcharge. Battery plates tend to acquire a sulphate coating
over time which then hinders the chemical action between the
electrolyte and the plate. By equalizing the battery in this
controlled overcharge the outer layer of the plate, including
the sulphate coating, is blown off, thereby rejuvenating the
battery and allowing all the surface area of the plates to
interact with the electrolyte. It also causes the electrolyte
to bubble and in wet cell batteries this mixes up the acid and
distributes it evenly throughout the cell.

Recommendations on the frequency at which equalization be
carried out vary from monthly to once or twice a year. Some
manufacturers only recommend it be carried out when necessary,
(Trojan), or once every six months or as necessary, (Rolls).
My personal experience is that equalizing the batteries is a
rather tedious, worrisome and smelly process so once or twice
a year is more than enough. I particularly recommend it
though for boats that rarely come to the dock. Such vessels
get their batteries fully charged less often and seem to
report tired batteries on a more frequent basis than boats
that get fully charged on a regular basis.

Equalizing the batteries is a tool that can be used to
rejuvenate tired batteries or to prevent batteries from
becoming tired. As a tool it is a double edged sword of
course, this removal of the outer layer of the plates reduces
their size and volume and thus their longevity. The material
removed will fall to the bottom and may eventually short out
the plates. I find that the best way to decide on whether to
equalize and how often is to consult the information from the
relevant battery manufacturer. You will find different
opinions even among battery manufacturers on the way
equalization is to be carried out.

Victron Amp Hour MeterIf you are reading this article it is
probably because you are having battery trouble. One of the
best ways of heading off trouble in the future is to install
an amp hour meter to give you a better idea of how your
batteries are performing. Scroll to the end of this article
for more information.

Equalizing wet cell batteries

1. The batteries must be fully charged to begin with.

2. Disconnect all loads. You are going to allow the battery
voltage to rise higher than normal; to 15 or 16 volts for a
12 volt battery bank. You don't want to damage sensitive
electronic equipment that might be connected.

3. Remove any hydrocaps fitted to the cells

4. Connect the charger and set it to the equalizing voltage.
(For Trojan wet cell batteries the recommended equalizing
voltage is 15.5 volts for a 12 volt bank, for Rolls the
   equivalent voltage is 15.5 - 16 volts)

5. Batteries will begin gassing and bubbling vigorously

6. Don't allow the battery temperature to rise much above 115
degrees F and never above 125 degrees. Measure from a
   center cell.

7. Take the specific gravity at hourly intervals

8. Equalization is complete when the specific gravity no
longer rises.

For Rolls batteries the end of the instructions were more specific

9. If severely sulfated, it may take many hours for the
   specific gravity to rise.

10. Once the specific gravity begins to rise the bank voltage
will most likely drop or the charging current will
increase. The charging current may need to be lowered if
temperature approaches 125F (46C). If the charge
controller was by passed, it should now be used or put
back in line.

11. Continue measuring the specific gravity until 1.265 is
reached.

12. Charge for another 3 hours. Add water to maintain the
electrolyte above the plates.

13. Allow bank to cool and check and record the specific
gravity of each cell. The gravities should be 1.265 0.005
or lower. Check the cell electrolyte levels and add water
IF necessary.

Equalizing AGM and other sealed batteries

Equalizing AGM and other sealed batteries is a bit more tricky. The
bubbling electrolyte results in some loss; electrolyte vapor exits the
vent caps. However because there is no way to replace the lost
electrolyte it is obvious

You are correct. Yes.
Heat is bad. Rapid charging causes heat. So slow is better.

Charge rate is usually expressed relative to the amp-hour capacity
of the battery, so the "bigger" the battery the more amps can
still be considered "slow".

But - the alternator is rather high current. I don't remember
what is on an OM61x - 60A maybe? With a bunch of glow and a lot
of cranking the battery voltage could be low enough that
alternator could be supplying more than 40 amps just to charge.

Automotive flooded cell batteries are pretty tough. About the
only thing good in a typical car is the battery is kept charged.
High current of starting is not good. High current of the
following charge isn't good. Heat (in an engine compartment)
isn't good. Vibration isn't good. Use an AGM and when the system
was built for a flooded cell and the voltage will be wrong. Etc.
But we can still expect to get 7 years of use from one.

A big battery that's mostly discharged can take more than a full day at 2A, and
your "2A" charger might not be putting out 2A the whole time. If it's already
80% charged a few hours at 2A should take care of it.
I'd give it more time and see what happens.
Do you have a voltmeter handy?

Yes, high current charging will heat the battery and could damage the

Ah, now I know how the homeless issue can be addressed. If a hotel caused
cancer, then the hobos can be labeled as carcinogens due to the drug use,
smoking, poor food and alcohol usages, living in constant contact to exhaust
fumes and urban air. Yeah, homeless folks be in violation of article 68 or

 LOL
I too have been concerned about those "Known to cause cancer in the state of
California." As a warning sign they're pretty useless.
Reminds me of high school chemistry class where old Mr. Black would put
warnings on all the chemicals, the one with the most dire warnings was good old
H2O. He warned about drowning, heart attacks from shoveling snow, the danger of
electrolyte imbalance and I don't remember what else, dude had a very dry sense
of humor.

Not state employees, but voters.
They're collectively proven to be either morons or easily stampeded sheep.

Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic
Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted as a ballot initiative in November 1986.
The proposition protects the state's drinking water sources from being
contaminated with chemicals known to cause cancer...

I recently stayed at a hotel in California, a rather new hotel belonging to
a major chain. Very nice place. A un-helpful sign near the front door
explained that this hotel is known by the state of CA to cause cancer.

Absurd signs like these convince me that state employees in CA must be
idiots. Who but an idiot would require every hotel to place a sign near
the door about the danger of cancer from the hotel, but absolutely NO
information about what a visitor or employee could do to reduce that risk.
CA residents need to demand more intelligence from their government.

That's known as reduction adabsurdum:

"n logic, reductio ad absurdum (Latin for "reduction to absurdity"), also
known as argumentum ad absurdum (Latin for "argument to absurdity") or the
appeal to extremes, is a form of argument that attempts either to disprove
a statement by showing it inevitably leads to a ridiculous, absurd, or

true, the result would be absurd or impossible."

dies, thus the cause of death is excessive breathing...
