Yes same with my 90 300D 2.5t. Starts in 2nd-can feel kickdown into 1st. My
240D started in 4th-or so it seemed.

I think MB decided almost at random which models to start in 2nd. My '84 190D
starts in 2nd BTW, its quite noticeable when it drops into 1st if you hit the
kickdown switch.

Yes, I'm quite sure. After two fills of M1 ATF, it shifts very nicely.

Stu Ritter's Bible says that only some of the 124 gas cars started in 2nd, if
you can believe him.

Sure about the '87? Mine definitely starts in 2nd. There is a HUGE
difference in acceleration from a stop if I force it into 1st by
flooring it or doing the 2-3-2 trick. Works nicely to surprise
teenagers in souped-up Civics.

However this is not to say that some take off in 1st but as far as I
recall 1st gear is supposed to be used when driving up steep grades or
pulling a trailer.
According to the owners manual for the petrol 124's, they should start
in 2nd under moderate acceleration, when the gear selector is in 3 or D.
As a side note, cars that have a S (standard) or E (economy) selector
switch (very rare on Oz Benzes), they will always take off in 2nd if E
is selected. Basically the Economy/Standard switch varies the length of
the control cable going to the gear box. Which I think is one of those
things that is a waste of time, as you get the same effect with how much
pressure you put on the accelerator pedal. Guess it's one of those "ahh
look other car makers have an economy switch, we better have one too"
situations.

a big sink trap, that looped from the air cleaner outlet to the turbo
compressor inlet. Each end of the U had a thick rubber seal in the end where
it plugged onto the filter box or the turbo.

Apparently the 1985 is a lot different. That 300SD looks to have a rubber
flex hose with hose clamps at each end.

The infamous Lovecraft company opened a veggie oil "conversion" shop
in a hip neighborhood in Portland during the last biofuels boom,
around 2005. I used to pass it every day on my way to work. There
were always a half-dozen interesting cars in front---not just Mercedes
but '80s Japanese diesel pickups, pre-TDI VWs, once a Scout IIRC. The
shop is closed now.
