Re: [MBZ] OT: The West Wing

2009-04-08 Thread Jim Cathey

Today was not a car day. It was View Improvement day.
I cut down two pines that impaired the view of the dry
(-ish) lake bed from the new addition, and cut up the blue
spruce they pushed over with the Cat before construction
began. All for next winter's firewood. More tomorrow,
I think.

It's painted. The stone work is done except for some

 that's left.

Oh, and landscape repair. Lots of that...

BTW, how's the construction going?

Wiring is all in, for good or ill. (I planned Cat 5e and RG6
feeds from here to there, let's hope I did it right.) Speaker
cables run for house 'Muzak'. Media room wiring wasn't to be
a part of this project, this isn't where the big stuff's to be.
Drywall is mostly in, mudding will start today. Windows all
in. Deck built, but no railing yet. (That's to be custom to
match what's already there, and it's my responsibility not the
contractor's.) It's looking pretty good, though not particularly
picture-worthy again yet. Ceiling fan ordered, and in-wall heat
circulator as well.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The West Wing

2008-12-17 Thread Jim Cathey

Work is proceeding slowly, the front yard is all dug up:
trenches for the moving of the underground power wire.
Yesterday they were out there using a weed burner to try
to thaw the ground so that they could expose the live
wire for tying into. Not a fun-looking job if you ask
me! The delay caused by this unplanned wiring project
meant that they haven't yet got the Cat in here to do
the foundation digging. Part of the plan was to use the
Cat to push over the blue spruce that's in the way.
(That way the root ball comes up too.) My plan was to
then top it for our best-ever Christmas tree, but we're
running behind. So yesterday I came home at lunch while
Jill was away (as she objected) and I scaled the tree with
a little folding handsaw. I cut off the top and came back
down. Turned out the tree had forked a few years back, so
the tree still has a top and doesn't look bad. Of course,
the fork meant that my new tree doesn't look as good as
it might have. Oh well. Part of the fun of harvesting
your own.

The good part of this new power wiring is that I'm getting
rid of the extra pumphouse meter ($20/month forever), and
I'm getting a service cutoff switch down at the power pole.
That's where I'll put the generator hut, someday.

Pine tree potting soil. At least, so it seems based
upon its behavior. Can't keep the pine trees from sprouting
up everywhere. Decomposed granite, very well drained.
The lawn area, where they touched upon, had some kind of
topsoil trucked in, IMHO. Probably lake bed muck from
the nearby drained (20's) lake.

Being a real blackberry and not that invasive chinese sort, it

Care? Feeding? Hmm, maybe I should try that sometime.

I just moved them out of the yard and over near the little

Don't hold your breath. My dad's been trying to grow Pinot Noir
for years. It's holding on, but the growing season is just a little
too short for them to ripen all the way, most years. This is a bit
north of Portland. Pinot does well south of Portland, but not to
the north. You're in worse shape, at least so far as the traditional
wine grapes I'm aware of. You could probably make some nice Concord
wine...

That being said, and good advice too. Have EVERYTHING ready to go in
and know EXACTLY where it all goes. Spec every last detail and shop
it about so you get best prices. There is nothing as frustrating and
homicide inducing as having to unbuild what you just put in because
you came late with the engineering and products.

Had to redo structural because the engineering for the balcony came
back as can't be done. Builder figured out it could be canted and
tore up everything he did for two weeks to make it happen. Then SWMBA
chose her bathroom fixtures. Had to tear out the floors and walls to
redo plumbing we put in a month before to accommodate that choice.
Oak flooring came in two batches because she changed her mind on wool
carpeting needed to be oak now. Found out, after installing 900sqft
that the initial 700 were red and the other 800 were white. Oak burns
REALLY hot and I still have enough after 8 years. Contractor ate that
one.

What they say and what it ends up is a tad bit different. Most of the
contractors I had bid came in low and specified low end products and
finish. I picked the TM anal retentive fellow who would do great
work and contracted it myself. No mark up on product and I had to
make the builder happy with what I sourced. All dimensional #1 and
finish grade ply, not knotty wood and particle board. Ended up 33%
more than the most expensive bid, but craftsman quality, not beaner
with a nail gun.

The advice given to me for a similar project was: get the divorce first ...
you can always get remarried again later if it works out.

Seriously, we did a major remodel on two houses while living in them. Check
out your builder AND his subs before you sign. Check references and
suppliers too.

It looks like we might be pulling the trigger on a little
project I've wanted for a long time: an extension off the
side of our living room. 18x20', two-storey, vaulted
ceiling, deck, porch. Two small bed/office rooms below.
French doors onto the deck, windows on both other sides.
Passage cut on one side of our existing fireplace. Free
standing wood stove in the new addition, along with a
nice ceiling fan. Styled to roughly match the rest of
the 70's house, but with Craftsman influences where we
can get away with them. Just like the 6-car garage
addition, rule #1 is to make it look like it was always
there. There are a few complications, the worst is that
we'll have to move the power feed to the house. We'll
also have to cut down one of the two big blue spruces
in the yard. (I plan to use the top for our Christmas
tree, it'll be the best-looking tree we've had by far.
[We get them off our property every year.]) The bid
is $97k.

Opinions? The contractor is recently returned to the area,
he used to do chores for the previous owner. His dad still
lives across the road.

My jokes to SWMBA about having room to park another car
under the deck didn't seem to go over very well.

We just transplanted the rose my deceased mother planted
by the entryway, and the never-happy blackberries she
also gave me that I've been hoping will grow. They're
not the usual giant Washington car-eating blackberries,
these are smaller with a very good flavor. Supposedly.
They've never fruited, never even grown in ten or so
years. But they're not dead yet, either. Unless I just
killed them.

Yeah, don't push that too hard. With a 6-car garage, you shouldn't have
to. Besides, it sounds like it's your wife's turn for something nice.

Eight-car garage. Did I imply the house didn't have a garage
before I put on the extension? :-) Even so we've got as many
cars outside as in, right now.

She does get something nice: empty space with none of my
crap in it. A bigger deck. A bigger entryway. And a porch.
And the opportunity to furnish/decorate it at her whim. Along
with choosing new carpet for the house as well.

Absolutely. The subs will ask for money on Friday night with a story about
the kids need shoes and food, haven't eaten for two weeks etc. Be hard with
