Re: [MBZ] OT web cam and cheap tablet

2015-07-13 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I found a refurb Belkin Netcam on Amazon for cheepcheep, arrived this
morning, took about 3min to set it up, works great. You can set motion
sensing at various levels, sends an email when it detects some motion.
Can view on various devices. Easy and cheap solution.

I guess I will abandon the old one, or find the setup software and see
if i can see it on a winders box.

Now I am wondering if I could use a cheap tablet as a monitor for
it, somehow. I have an old Android phone and an old ifone too, there
is a VLC app for the phones and ipad, so I am wondering if that might
work somehow. If I could get it working then I could buy one of those
$50 tablets and have a continuous monitor. THere might be some other
apps too, I have not looked into it.

I have an application called TinyCam (Android) that does this, no idea
whether it will support your camera. I have also heard of IP Cam and
Quick Cam (I think). There are another hundred of these apps in the
store, many of them hardware specific, if the generic ones don't
work. I assume the Apple store is similarly blessed with options.

I would not bother with VLC for this use, at least on Android. I
expect one of the aforementioned apps will work more conveniently.

Best,
Tim

The Linksys 932 and 933 wireless models work well for this sort of thing and
are close in price. Linksys has a nice application that lets you view multiple
cameras on the same screen, too.

I have three of these around the exterior of the house, and I'm pleased with
them. I'm surprised at the IR visibility, as it's pretty good considering the
distances involved and the light levels.

The one on my lanai is inside the screen, so it won't see beyond the screen
with the IR. That being said, the motion detection part can see past the
screen, and it appears to trigger when wildlife goes by, but I can't see it.

None of mine are rated for outdoor use, but I have them mounted in protected
areas (under eaves) that are exposed to the elements. No problems for a year
now.

Great work, guys.

So here is my scenario. Doorbell rings. I want to look at know who's at
the front door from an upstairs office in the rear corner of the house.
How do I access the video feed? Can I do it on my computer or smart phone

whoever is ringing the bell, without bothering to go downstairs?

[MBZ] OT web cam and cheap tablet

2015-07-06 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

Or, web cam and existing fone or ipad...

I have an older wifi cam and wanted to see if I could get it working
with a cheap tablet of some sort as a remote viewer. The cam had some
sort of windows software that I never used, but I could see it with VLC
on my Mac after putting in some sort of weird script, but a VLC upgrade
would not see it any more. I found an earlier version and installed
that and it worked again, but then I got a new router with my Uverse
install, and it wouldn't see it anymore though it was still visible on
the network. I sorta gave up on fooling with it at that point.

Now I am wondering if I could use a cheap tablet as a monitor for it,
somehow. I have an old Android phone and an old ifone too, there is a
VLC app for the phones and ipad, so I am wondering if that might work
somehow. If I could get it working then I could buy one of those $50
tablets and have a continuous monitor. THere might be some other apps
too, I have not looked into it.

Or should I just buy one of these and use it and not fool with the other
one? Or will the same s/w work with the old one I have?
