Re: [MBZ] Okie alignment

2023-10-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I checked and they all appear to be working. I then had the thought that
perhaps the toe is so far out on the front that the wheel on that side is
cocked out enough to where there is not a line of sure to the back sensor. Sure
enough turning the wheel a little fixed that issue. For some reason I’m getting
an error for the RF saying the toe transducer has a problem. That’s the error I
was getting when I would block the eye, then that error would pop up for a
second before going to the sensor blocked error. I’m done messing with it for
today but I think what I’m going to when to do is just a straight 2 wheel
alignment first to get the toe correct, then do a 4 wheel. Will see how it goes
tomorrow. Otherwise I will take it down somewhere to have it done as I’m going
to need to start driving the car week after next.

I might keep an eye out for a new set of sensor heads but the ones I found at
the moment they are asking more than I paid for the whole setup.

[MBZ] Okie alignment

2023-10-07 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Been messing with this alignment machine learning all about it today. I have
the car setup and the sensor heads compensated but I can’t get the 2 left
sensors to see each other. These have a IR beam from to back on each side; then
side to side on the front. At first the fronts could not see each other but one
of them had a mess of cob webs in the opening covering the eye. Cleaned that
out and they are fine. Now i still can’t get the left side to cooperate. If I
put my hand over the lens then remove it, machine says there is a problem with
the beam, then goes back to saying it’s blocked. It’s clear, nothing is in the
way, no cob webs blocking anything. Of course with this blocked I can’t get a
full set of readings

I may have to throw in the towel and take the car somewhere Monday to get
aligned.

Subject: [MBZ] Okie Acres wind farm

There is a wind farm going in around here. They are paying $20k per year per
turbine to put it on your land. I’m aiming to get 5-6 of them installed, maybe
more. I need to get more details on this.

There is an Okie acres for just about everything. Yesterday I was driving thru
the middle of nowhere Missouri and a guy had a pasture full of hundreds of old
broken down backhoes, and various other earth moving equipment. There is a guy
not too far from me that has hundreds and hundreds of old riding and mush
mowers sitting in his pasture.

Just from the pictures, everything of value to actually make them airplanes
again is GONE.. long gone... plus, I'm seeing corrosion which is the
Mercedes equal to tin worm...
Very few parts left to strip out and try to sell to a very limited market..
Good luck to the new owner

Another neat trick is a movable chain fall.
Not really necessary if you're just rolling scrap cars in, lifting the
engines, and rolling them back out, but the bee's knees for remove and
reinstall.

I've seen two ways of doing that.
One guy put an upright pole in wheel bearings, with an arm jutting out.
He swings it over the engine bay, lifts the engine, and swings the
engine out of the way.

The better setup has a 6" I-beam attached to several trusses, and a
chain fall on a trolley, using the beam for a track.

Good point.
A friend probably paid about as much for his 4' racks as I paid for my
MBZ collection. OTOH, in the past he's forklifted RX-7s onto those
racks, but not the ones along the walls. Actually, I'm not sure if any
of his racks are on the walls, or if he can walk around all of them to
pile parts on the back side. But I'm pretty sure his warehouse is bigger
than Kleb's, it's maybe 80' wide and over 100' deep.

2021-10-15 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It looks like most of what is pictured is 48" deep uprights. I choose to go
for 32 inch deep rack because 4' deep shelves are too deep to easily get
access to whatever is pushed to the back. Plus, I didn't want to give up 4
ft of the perimeter of the building. Also, narrower racks are not as
popular with warehouses which usually use both sides in long pallet rack
runs, so it's cheaper..
Keep looking, the right deal will come. With the present economy, there are
a lot of stores closing, so should be a bunch of "slightly used"
pallet rack on the market in near future.
You decide what will best work for you.

2021-10-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I almost always work by myself, so moving a dead car onto a rack, or around
the shop is a pain.
That's why my rule is make it easy, straight in, straight out, and use your
concrete drill to drive a thread insert to mount a pull point for a
electric winch then let your finger pull in the car.. you'll feel a lot
more like working on it when your back doesn't hurt from horsing it into
position to lift.
Cheat when you can. ;))

It is older heavy duty rack, not bent [do NOT buy bent rack, it will hurt
you] the paint is crappy, so it's not pretty, but it's solid. I got the
whole batch for $350. Later went back and bought more cross beams [to make
more shelves.. another $250. So, all in $600.
You need a helper to set up the racking.. don't try 12 ft uprights by
yourself..

There are 2 other overhead doors, but the 2 smaller ones are right
across from each other at the back as seen in the photos. Neither of
those would work very well for straight in.

I also suggest you add a second door, and move the angled lift to line up

where the door would go.] Same thing, straight in, straight out. Then you
actually can use the second lift, instead of shoehorning a car into an

Yes, straight in, straight out, to the lift, with a winch to pull a dead
car, instead of breaking your back trying to push it in, or out.
I also suggest you add a second door, and move the angled lift to line up
with the second door [Presuming there is clear space for access outside
where the door would go.] Same thing, straight in, straight out. Then you
actually can use the second lift, instead of shoehorning a car into an
angle.
[It's always easy to spend somebody else's money, so cut a hole and buy
another door.. haha]
Just a suggestion to make the shop work for you, instead of you working for

step up the search.  Don't need a fork lift as the tractor will lift as
high as I would want to go.

"tip resistant" [unless you do something really stupid].
THEN, organize all the "stuff" that is taking up floor space on the racks

because you allocated rack space to THAT project.
Suddenly, you have work space for each car instead of clutter..

Every time I have tried to sell small items on CL or eBay it has ended up being
more work and hassle than was anywhere close to being worth the time for the
money.

If you have stuff you haven't touched in 5 - 10 years (some would say less),
unless it is some kind of family heirloom/keepsake, get rid of it.

The hardest part is figuring out what to do with all the crap. I have a couple
of additional shelving units to put it but I don’t think even that will be
enough.

I think putting it straight in the door would be easier to get a non opp car on
it and would probably net more room to work around it, but I want to also
maximize area to store cars indoors. When I say store cars I mean running cars
that I can easily pull in and out when I need the space for work.

Re: [MBZ] Okie shop

2021-10-14 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I was thinking of angling it to the left of that other lift, toward the smaller
door. If I do it to the right it will be a real tight turn trying to get it in.
If I do it straight in, if far enough in I would have room to park cars behind
it and should have room to the right to get around it and park cars in that
spot to the left of the other lift, as well as to the right of it.

Use your backhoe or front loader to dig a pit, then sprinkle some diesel on
them, then a sprinkle of gas [stale gas if you have it] with a trail out of
the pit... pitch a match on the trail, let the gas fire off the diesel,
which fires off the tires... Then you have a contained fire that you can
bury over when you're done... A tire fire throws off a lot of heat and
smoke, so you might draw someone's attention with a fire call.

Re: [MBZ] Okie shop flooded

2021-07-11 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
You need gutters on the roof with drains to carry the water to lower ground.

If there is a path to lower ground and you don't mind an open ditch that would
be easiest. Maybe a more gentle "swale" you could plant grass in so it isn't so
ugly as an open dirt ditch.

Yeah dig a trench around the perimeter of the building, put in some
gravel then a drain pipe with gravel over, then connect it to a drain
going out to your retention pond or ditch or whatever.  Kind of a
reverse septic field.  You want to get the water from around the building.
