you would easily fit in a MGB - not sure about the later ones but the
pre 74 models have very deep leg areas. A friend tried on my 66 B for
size and within a week had bought one - he was 6'6.

Just don't expect too much refinement in a MGB vs a Miata - but there
was a hierarchy of sports cars from the 60s - let's see if my memory
will work today; (this oughta start some arguments) ;-)

1st - MG Midgets and AH Sprites
2nd - TR 3s and 4s
3rd MGB
4 - TR6
5 - Alfa 1600 Duetto (the Graduate car)
6 - mid 60s Stingray
7 XKE
8 911
9 230/250/280SL
10 - the various Italian exotic stuff...

-- The MGBs and TR4s were equal in many people's eyes.
-- #'s 6,7, 8 9 were usually interchangable although the 911 MBs
build quality usually put them on top although the MBs performance was
inferior. That was tempered by the StingRay's ease of mechanical repair
(and parts cost). But the 911 was usually twice the cost of the
StringRay -

The various Lotus' were in there somewhere between 5 and 8 depending on
model.

All IMO of course Let the Shouting Begin! ;-)

I know I fit in an MG and an Austin Healey, as I've ridden or driven both. A
real b*tch to get in and out of for someone my height, but I fit, none the less.

[MBZ] Scored an R129!

2013-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff
Woo-hoo!

Just made a deal on a 1997 SL500. The good, the bad, the ugly:

Good:
Red with black interior
40th Anniversary Edition (according to VIN)
71,000 miles
Body is near perfect
Interior is very good condition
Soft top is as new

Bad:
Top hydraulics need replacement
Oil tube or tubes possibly bad on right side of engine (slight single lifter
tick)
Aftermarket radio (owner has original Becker)
CEL is on with code for O2 sensor

Ugly:
Hard top headliner gone, will need to replace
Rebuilt title (car was totaled in 2007 due to front end damage, rebuilt by
local dealer)

Price: $5000

Some observations:

According to the VIN this is a 40th Anniversary model. However, it has trunk
badging, which the 40th Anniversary models were not supposed to have. I can
only assume that this was installed in the past when there was a rear end
damage noted in the DMV reports from the original owner. I'm torn as to whether
or not I should leave it on the car or not.

Lifter tick could very well be due to lack of use. The car has been driven less
than 3000 miles in the last 4 years, so it's sat a lot. I'll drain the engine
and refill with the required Mobil1 0W40 as soon as I get it and drive a little
while to see if the tick goes away.

Thanks to Klaus at Top Hydraulics and others it looks like the top controller
is probably OK. The window drop feature does work, meaning that the system is
probably synchronized. However, the PO has operated the top manually, meaning
that they probably upset the system at some point and invoked the safeties, I
suspect. There was some beeping when I started the car, which I believe was due
to the top system complaining.

I was able to raise the roll bar using the switch on the console, however, this
apparently pressurized the system, which caused the leaking cylinders in the
top of the windshield frame to leak hydraulic fluid out the trim covers of the
windshield corners. This also leads me to believe that the hydraulic system is
probably OK but needs to be sorted out.

I'm figuring about $2k worth of repairs (parts) will be necessary to get it
completely sorted out, after which I should have a very nice, 100% working
SL500.

I take delivery on Thursday. What a great Christmas present!

Re: [MBZ] Scored an R129!

2013-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff
I love my W140, and am very comfortable with the systems. It's been a great
car and very reliable.

While it would be nice to have another W140, I really want a convertible to
take advantage of the climate here. Prices on W107s are stupid, and you have
the dated technology that goes with them. They are nice cars, but I wanted
something more affordable and something I am comfortable working on and
repairing.

Early R129s are kind of simple and plain, IMHO. The systems aren't as nice and
sophisticated as the 94 and later (facelift models). 96 and later have a 5
speed tranny as opposed to the 4 speed, and also aren't susceptible to the two
big issues in earlier models - self-destructing wiring harnesses and failing
evaporators.

With the budget I have I didn't expect to find a 96 or later, so this was a
real blessing in disguise. Thanks to Kaleb's help with a Carfax and some
assistance from a friend who has access to the California DMV (where this car
was originally sold) I was able to put together the history in great detail.
My parts buddy at MB of Tampa got me access to the service history, which was
the icing on the cake, so to speak.

Top hydraulics will cost me around $600 for a full set of 12 rebuilt cylinders.
Oil tubes, if it needs them, will set me back about $250 - $300.

O2 sensors might be needed, although I'm convinced that the lifter tick and O2
issues are probably due to the lack of use (less than 3k miles in the last 4
years.)

Hard top headliner is an easy DIY repair that costs about $100 for material and
glue. A good Saturday project and not one that's critical to the operation of
the car.

I'll get all the fluids and filters changed out and drive it for a bit before I
make any changes. I'll hit the hydraulics in January after I get my
vacation/sick days payout from the school district. It looks like it could use
some brakes, so I'll take them on in January as well.

Again, thanks to Kaleb for the Carfax!

While it would be nice to have another W140, I really want a convertible
to take advantage of the climate here. Prices on W107s are stupid, and you
have the dated technology that goes with them. They are nice cars, but I
wanted something more affordable and something I am comfortable working on

Early R129s are kind of simple and plain, IMHO. The systems aren't as
nice and sophisticated as the 94 and later (facelift models). 96 and
later have a 5 speed tranny as opposed to the 4 speed, and also aren't
susceptible to the two big issues in earlier models - self-destructing
 wiring harnesses and failing evaporators.

Woo-hoo!

Just made a deal on a 1997 SL500. The good, the bad, the ugly:

Good:
Red with black interior
40th Anniversary Edition (according to VIN)
71,000 miles
Body is near perfect
Interior is very good condition
Soft top is as new

Bad:
Top hydraulics need replacement
Oil tube or tubes possibly bad on right side of engine (slight single
lifter tick)

Aftermarket radio (owner has original Becker)
CEL is on with code for O2 sensor

Ugly:
Hard top headliner gone, will need to replace
Rebuilt title (car was totaled in 2007 due to front end damage, rebuilt by
local dealer)

Price: $5000

Some observations:

According to the VIN this is a 40th Anniversary model. However, it has
trunk badging, which the 40th Anniversary models were not supposed to
have. I can only assume that this was installed in the past when there was
a rear end damage noted in the DMV reports from the original owner. I'm
torn as to whether or not I should leave it on the car or not.

Lifter tick could very well be due to lack of use. The car has been driven
less than 3000 miles in the last 4 years, so it's sat a lot. I'll drain
the engine and refill with the required Mobil1 0W40 as soon as I get it
and drive a little while to see if the tick goes away.

Thanks to Klaus at Top Hydraulics and others it looks like the top
controller is probably OK. The window drop feature does work, meaning that
the system is probably synchronized. However, the PO has operated the top
manually, meaning that they probably upset the system at some point and
invoked the safeties, I suspect. There was some beeping when I started the
car, which I believe was due to the top system complaining.

I was able to raise the roll bar using the switch on the console, however,
this apparently pressurized the system, which caused the leaking cylinders
in the top of the windshield frame to leak hydraulic fluid out the trim
covers of the windshield corners. This also leads me to believe that the
hydraulic system is probably OK but needs to be sorted out.

I'm figuring about $2k worth of repairs (parts) will be necessary to get
it completely sorted out, after which I should have a very nice, 100%
working SL500.

I take delivery on Thursday. What a great Christmas present!

Re: [MBZ] Scored an R129!

2013-12-24 Thread OK Don
Yup, IIRC, the Alfa and possibly the Fiat 124 Spyder had one handed tops.
The British roadsters were more of a pain to operate, at least up through
the TR4, MGB.
Having owned and worked on MGs and Triumphs in the '60s and early '70s, and
my son having borrowed a mid-series Miata this summer, I can say that the
Miata is both more fun to drive, and a much more refined automobile. An
older MG is more like a stripped down 240D (with no AC or power anything)
that you have to tune every weekend and repair frequently. Don't even count
on the elecrtical system working!

Wilton, there is a big difference between a hole in the roof, and having no
roof at all! Much better without a roof than having a hole in one - BTDT.

The Alfa spider has a very easy top to put up and down. Can be done while
driving. Also a blast to drive.

I'll never forgive my friend Dave for selling his Miata without letting
me have a crack at it. His was black on black, early car with the flip up
headlights. I just barely fit although my head did rub the roof
occasionally. What a fun car to drive.

Want the top up? Reach back and grab it and put it up. Want it down?
Release two latches and put it down. I love that.

Someday I want an early Miata. Actually I'd really like an MG but I
think the Miata would be better to live with.

I can't fit in a Miata - I'm too tall.
