Re: [MBZ] W123 - parts

2019-09-14 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Yes, I went through the same drill with my Euro wagon, an 85 non-turbo, which
had no AC. Had to replace front springs, it had version for USA turbo car
which were too strong so the front end was too high. I determined that my
wagon needed same front springs as a USA 240D, so I got a set of those, and all
was good.

I have manuals printed for USA cars but springs may not be
differentiated between USA versus euro? Do you have access to VIN
specific data? This is '84 240D VIN

For euro import car? Like the slave cylinder - standard part for USA
car did not work. Transmission, AC, sunroof, etc seems probable the
same USA versus euro import. Stu was saying the 250 engine parts are
NLA, period. Sure they make special order parts from scratch but that

Choosing springs is a tricky thing, and best left to a competent dealer parts
person or maybe Tom at the Classic Center if you don’t know what you’re doing
and/or don’t have the factory manuals.

For my finnie I think there were no less than eight possibilities for springs,
although you could immediately eliminate about half of those out of the gate as
some were for special applications. From there it got down to the version of
the suspension (early/late) and then the equation for accessories.

You can always see if your springs have paint marks on them, as those are also
a means of identification. As for spring pads, you should be able to see the
“burls” (pins) on the sides of them to know which pad thickness to use.

You need to check in the FSM for the section with the survey on suspension
springs, calculate which spring is right for your car. Things like
automatic vs. manual transmission, AC, sunroof, will determine which spring
is right. I don't think euro makes a difference, but less risk overall
going the dealer / classic center route.

Anyone have a right rear taillight lens for a W123?

While disassembling my car, I found that the PO tried to “seal” cracks
in the right rear taillight lens using RTV. And not well, I might add.
Looks like the lens took a minor hit or push and cracked at the joint
between the red and yellow sections. I see nothing that would indicate
any incursion of water so I’m assuming they were aware of the problem
and were trying to be proactive.

Part number should be 123 820 32 66.

I’ll have to order a seal as well, as they smeared a fair amount of
RTV on it, too, making it a real mess. Fortunately I was able to clean
almost all of it off the seal and lens.

Thanks for checking, Dwight. Being the dry season here, it’s not a critical
issue.

I found a new one at Part.com for $68.00, which I’m sure is wrong, as dealer
list is $146.00. Just for grins I ordered it to see if they would rescind the
order. We’ll see in the morning once a live person can check the order.

I’ll buy a new seal as they’re cheap and not something I would take chances
with.

Again, thanks!

yellow sections. I see nothing that would indicate any incursion of water so
I’m assuming they were aware of the problem and were trying to be proactive.

Part number should be 123 820 32 66.

I’ll have to order a seal as well, as they smeared a fair amount of RTV on it,
too, making it a real mess. Fortunately I was able to clean almost all of it
off the seal and lens.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Parts

2016-11-15 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
My 78 300TD came with a cast iron style check strap mechanism that
eventually broke (lose pieces in the door). I replaced them with a stamped
steel version (style with the big ball bearings) which were fine as long as
the lube lasted. Also, cleaning and fresh lube usually brought the stamped
style back to life even after they rusted.

URO might be ok as long as you add moly lube really thick to the thing. Polei
had some uro crap that was busted to hell. The things were dry as could be. I
pulled straps from PnP and lubed them up before putting them in. The factory
goo was aged, the URO never had lube

2016-11-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I took a quick look tonight, and the door check strap is still there, so I’m
guessing there’s a good possibility that all the related stuff is there as
well, but probably in the bottom of the door.

I just happen to have a spare W126 door check - I’ll compare when I remove this
one to see if they’re the same.

More on tonight’s work after I run a couple of errands.

Its hard to slight somebody raising the price on something nobody else seems to
want to sell. He's got to stock the item and hope he can sell enough of them to
make a profit. After all you could always buy a couple thousand and play the
game yourself.
In the end yeah he's doubled the price but on the other hand its still just
$30...

I took one apart and cleaned/greased it; and maybe also repaired it years ago,
but I don't remember the details. I remember that they were tricky to take
apart and put back together.

Again, there is some speculation that the fronts may fit the rears. I just
ordered a URO from the Amazon to see.

I'm not sure Meyle is any better than URO these days. Much of their stuff comes
out of China. I avoid it as I do URO.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Parts

2016-11-15 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
With the exception of the 107 door checks, which are _awesome_, I don't see
how URO could really make them any worse than the DBAG's did. Never had to
replace a 107 door check, on any of the five that I've owned.

107: Steel, and rollers; bulletproof
115: Pot metal, and rollers; breaks
123: Steel, and big sliding BB's; seizes

Agreed.

I haven't checked to see if the old one is still in place - I don't think it
is, as the door swings freely. Not something I paid a lot of attention to at
the time.

I know they can be rebuilt, sort of. I think that's what Jim did, or maybe
Curly said something about it.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Parts

2016-11-15 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I've done some research and seen references to the front door check working on
the rear doors. However, there were also comments about the front door check
being longer possibly.

As much as I detest the idea, URO sells front door checks for $16.00 on Amazon.
As I get into this deeper I may throw caution to the wind and get one to see if
the theory checks out.

Re: [MBZ] W123 parts

2014-07-27 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
My brother had the same experience this spring when some idiot pulled
out in front of my niece and ripped the left headlight and fender up
on the 300E. Initial offer was $1600 and dumpster the car, my brother
vigorously objected, and they eventually admitted a comparable car in
similar condition (very nice, fairly low milage) was much higher.

They could only find a single example for sale nation wide at the
time, in Califormia, for $6500.

Finally cut him a check for $3000 and he fixed it himself, no salvage
title (which they insisted they could issue. I don't think so, the
State of Indiana issues tittles here).

Fight the bastards. I personally think issuing lowball offers of
insurance payments when the company is covering an insured at fault
should result in s substantial jail time and large fine fraud felony
conviction, but the insurance industry obviously has the ear of
legislators.

Agreed. As we've all heard of or dealt with similar situations over the years,
it's crazy to accept their initial offer. Do your due diligence and find as
much supporting documentation that you can. We have so many great resources
available to us today that it's crazy to accept their offer unless you know
it's fair. They're going to go to the books, which often have limited or no
information, making their offers ridiculously low. What they won't tell you is
that Black Book values are often well above what they will offer - you can get
Black Book values from your bank or credit union. BB used to be Cars of
Particular Interest, a great resource I used to subscribe to when they used to
offer the service to consumers. It's based on wholesale auction data, so it's
very relevant and accurate.

If you have proof of sales that support your numbers they're going to push back
a lot less, so it appears.

Their biggest concern is closing out the claim and getting it off the books.
In other words, how little will it take to make you go away?

Kelley Blue Book on-line is a good resource -- they list a 1987 300E
as retailing between $4000 and $9500 depending on condition, and in a
case of accident damage they owe you the RETAIL (replacement) cost,
not the WHOLESALE (trade-in) value of the car, since their insured
damaged YOUR car through no fault of your own.

They try that dodge too. Offered me $1500 for my 300D eight years ago
when some dimbulb ran a stop light and totaled it. I laughed, retail
was 4-6 and it has gone UP since then -- highly desirable car and
limited supply.

Most auto adjusters are clueless about the value of a Benz, they
rarely encounter one, it's almost exclusively Detroit of Japanese
disposable cars.

And I guess most people don't care if they are getting screwed, or
they would do something about it.

Don't forget tax/title/registration (or transfer of your existing registration).
If they give you what a dealer would charge out the door for the car, less your
deductible, then you should take their first offer. It just doesn't happen as
often as it should.

Wholesale price is where a dealer buys a car from another dealer wholesale, or
more specifically a wholesaler goes to franchise store and buys their trades
and sells them wholesale to another independent store. Trade in price is when a
customer is trading in their car for another car either at a franchise store or
independent. The wholesale price is usually more than the trade amount.

Re: [MBZ] W123 parts

2014-07-24 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
This thread causes me to want to share an anecdote. I had a W123 240D that
I had for a short time. Seems like it was just over a year. Had just over
300K on the clock, if memory serves, when the crankshaft broke. So, a local
guy I had been talking to had a W123 300D that was basically nothing but
rust, but a good engine, he was daily driving. My chassis was nearly rust
free, the only rust was in the front quarters really so good chassis +
good engine = car stays on the road that much longer. Couple months ago I
was in the pull-apart looking for some parts for the Sportage I was driving
and saw a blue W123 chassis, missing two of the doors, the hood and a
quarter panel.

Hmm ... mine was a blue W123, so I had a car just like it.

So for nostalgia I'm looking around it, and see the rip in the seat I did
on accident. The broken place on the dash that mine had ... this was *my*
W123.

So the guy says, after sending him an email, Yeah, it turned out to be too
much trouble so I'm just driving the one I already had.

*sighs*

There is nothing quite like finding the car you had hoped would be fixed,
stripped instead.

On a related note, my truck died last weekend, so I'm suddenly in the
market for a car. Anyone have a decent looking, great running car taking up
too much space in the driveway?

I am your man if you need cherry123 palomino door and rear hatch panels
for a 300D/TD. I also have a couple blue door panels and a hatch area
headliner cover for a 300D/TD. They are all offered at below market
prices.

For all you W108/109/111 fans, I have TWO spare rariators, an oil cooler, a
front bumper and rear bumper overriders for a 280SE 3.5 COUPE. Some of the
coupe chrome is NOS or nearly so.

On the right side of my car? :-)

We're headed over to Roy and its environs (including Gig Harbor) next
weekend. Could pick 'em up? What _is_ this faded yellow color, anyway?
I've been calling it ivory, but it's probably something else.

http://cathey/dogear.com/mb240d/car3.jpg

Even if the caps are more of a white variation I'm sure they'll
look just fine. On one side by themselves!

Any U-Pulls in the area I should hit to find the missing molding?
This car is getting close to what I'll call done, it'd be nice to
put it up for sale soon, but that can't happen until the exterior
cosmetics are taken care of. (Molding, hood star, etc.)

I'm having an idea that I'll try to take this 240D on the trip.
Fill it up once in Idaho ($2.43/g) and forget about it.

No idea what your official designation is, but I call it eggnog yellow.
The caps are more piano key ivory type.

there are a few PnP around that neck of the woods. Pull a Part has a
Tacoma yard. There is a guy on CL with a yard (not sure if it is Pull)
in Gig Harbor. He does MB mostly, but I have never gone. Lynnwood is
my favorite yard, but there are no benz in there at the moment. Might
have one or two headed there this week. I will head out there and let
you know.

And yes you can pick the caps up.
