_Loops_ are the big problem. That, and the assumption that _any_ conductor
is even remotely perfect. Especially dirt. These factors are negligible in
'ideal'
circumstances, and crucial/deadly in non-ideal circumstances. Codes are the
way they are for very good reasons.

Lightning is about as non-ideal as it gets. (Something to do with millions
of volts, backed by millions of amps... Vaporization a specialty.)

Multiple rods is okay. Even multiple points - so long as they are
all only connected to each other and the main service entrance
ground connects to the rod array in ONE place. I think that is
what Don is talking about. Especially in low-conductive soil,
multiple rods can be needed.

A ground rod at the AC unit is fine - so long is it isn't
connected to the power at the AC unit! It should only be
connected to other ground rods.

True, but that ground should be at a single point, not multiple points.

Hence the chastising for driving a ground rod at the AC unit. That would
conflict with the ground that should already exist at the service entrance.

I think the idea is that all the earth and neutral bonding for an
electrical service should be at one point, the main service panel. If
you have other bonding points you can wind up with return current
flowing on the ground wire and possibly energizing appliance or
equipemnt surfaces that are connected to ground.

Generally speaking, the power goes to the outdoor unit, which is connected to
the indoor unit via 3+G strand Romex, which handles both power and
communications.
It's possible that the three wires are two for blower power and one for
computer signal. There's some argument whether the outdoor unit should be earth

I don't know enough about the system, but it sounds like there are
two pieces and the fried controller is connected to the distant
part?

This gets into "network system TVS". When two or more items are
connected to power _and_ connected to each other there is
opportunity for trouble in any transient event, especially to the
points where the two are connected together.

I would make _sure_ the two parts are getting power from the same
panel. And be sure there is only one ground bond point for the
two of them. And be sure the ground isn't compromised but is
connected ONLY to the building ground rod.

This will eliminate a vast majority of the potential problems from
a transient.

Next I would put over voltage protections. Gas tubes are really
sturdy, but kinda slow. Diodes are fast, but not so rugged. I
would put in both. I suspect there isn't a pre-made TVS for that
control line, but if the voltage of the controls signals is
known, then suitable gas tubes and diodes can be added. So if it
is a 5 volt control signal, clamping at 12 V is probably about
right.

If it is ethernet, including POE, but not HD-BaseT, an L-Com
ELP-CAT6 will do nicely. Gas tube and diode protection between
each pair and to ground.

L-Com may make something suitable.

My building is 16x32 ft, 2-story. But I only condition one downstairs 16x20
"finished" room, which means sheetrock on inside walls but zero insulation.
The tongue-and groove floor and ceiling are pretty leaky. The upstairs and
other downstairs room (workshop) are actually drafty on a windy winter day.
No problem keeping below 80 in summer. The heat pump works hard in winter but
keeps the indoor temp above 60. I live in north-central NC, almost in VA. So
we see summer temps in the 90s and winter temps in the 20s and sometimes teens.

Go to the expense of insulating the building first. Yeah, it won’t be cheap,
but if you do that and *then* put in an AC unit it will be far more efficient
and cool the place down a lot faster. Depending on that the walls are framed
out with and the centers, you could probably do it with foam boards pretty
easily.

Re: [MBZ] Garage A/c Wuz:Test Message

2019-07-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Go to the expense of insulating the building first. Yeah, it won’t be cheap,
but if you do that and *then* put in an AC unit it will be far more efficient
and cool the place down a lot faster. Depending on that the walls are framed
out with and the centers, you could probably do it with foam boards pretty
easily.

Re: [MBZ] Garage A/c Wuz:Test Message

2019-07-23 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I have Fujitsu units in my house and garage... still going strong 5 years
later. I installed them myself, which is heavily frond upon here in the
USA, but if you can do you own AC service work on your car (with a vacuum
pump and gauge set) you can install one of these. From how they're
designed (pre charged from the factory for a pre-defined length of line
set) they certainly had user install in mind.

I don't know much about the cheap brands, but as Mitch mentioned the
inverter drive models are the ones to get, which I think is nearly all of
them these days. Once they reach the set temperature, they ramp down and
have very little power consumption.

Re: [MBZ] Garage A/c Wuz:Test Message

2019-07-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s behind a fence that sticks out next to my garage and in front of the
window. There’s maybe a gap of 6”-8” between the fence post and the wall of the
house that you can see it through, otherwise it’s completely invisible from the
street. I have shrubbery that masks the gap.

When our new management company did their first community inspections in
December of last year I didn’t have the shrubbery growing as high as it is now,
and they gave me sort of a “grin, grin, wink wink” comment about it. As it’s
out of sight now, it’s no longer an issue. I figured if they wanted to push the
issue I would just get some fencing panels and cover up the gap with them if
necessary.

I would rather have a mini-split anyway, as I could get something bigger than
the 8k-10k BTU the window unit is and be able to cool it down a lot faster. I’m
sure it would be more efficient as well. And it’s not a window unit, so the
compressor and condenser would be at ground level.

People have DIY installed Gree and still think it was a good deal two years
later.
Myself, I've only bought Fujitsu and LG, but I'd gladly buy Mitsubishi too.

Whatever the brand, you want the higher end variable speed inverter drive
compressor with variable speed indoor blower. Variable speed outdoor fan is
less important, but my Fujitsu had it, was nearly as silent outside as it was
inside unless it was running full blast heat in the winter.

Make the time for it. You’ll kick yourself for not doing it earlier.

I had a fuel hose on the 220SEb that cracked this morning. Pulled the car into
the garage, closed the door, turned on the AC and went out anhour later and did
the work in relative comfort while the outside air is in the high 80s and
totally saturated with humidity.

Didn’t even break a sweat doing the work.
