i also have to agree with Gerry; i would never have guessed that a

MBZ Social would better convey the tone, and those who like to play
in a cat box can still play in Banned, if that's how they like to play.

(i barely found this post, since the majority of what passes by on
this list barely gets a quick scan before meeting the Delete Key. if
Subject lines were kept relevant, it would be safe to just Delete

The down side of that is that I expect the list would not be all that
active and folks would drift away.

I prefer to have activity even if it is not always on topic.
I do agree that subject lines need to be updated. Sometimes a non MB
post becomes one but the subject would never give one a clue that it had
happened.

Banned light? The word banned turns off a lot of people. You might
change banned light to Mercedes Social or something similar with better
results. Of course, there needs to be a little management or tough
love.
When a member keeps posting non-Mercedes items on the Mercedes list, he
needs to be banned from that list after several warnings, but not the
social list. I've never seen an internet list prosper that didn't have some
management. All this bickering turns off members who are interested in
Mercedes but not in guns, abortion, politics, etc., etc.
If you don't have time to manage the list, you can appoint a sufficient
number of moderators
to keep the Mercedes list free of non-Mercedes topics. Warnings would come
from the moderators so no individual moderator could be blamed. I belong
to a list that has 15 moderators and it works quite well.

NO. WE NEED OFF TOPIC POSTS!

I, for one, am exceeding grateful for the list wisdom and knowledge imparted on
subjects other than Mercedes Benz automobiles.
I am enthralled hearing of Gerry's experiences, or Wilton's experiences of
growing up back in the day. It is like having a history lesson taught by
someone who lived it.
I enjoy reading of Rich's, and others home renovation sagas, both the successes
and the failures. Where else can you learn about high performance range hoods
like Alan's (sp).
I like hearing tales of ancient watches being brought back to life with an
intricate disassembly and cleaning.
I long to read about Breezy airplanes, the NTSB report on an airplane
incident, or how Georgia clay needs to be trucked to OK for a better dirt
runway.
It is gripping to be able to hear and see first hand experiences of those going
through disasters, such as Jaime's experience recently with hurricane Sandy.
Rogers contributions on Porches, which Bugatti is more exclusive, and newer
Mercedes are welcome reading too.

I could go on, but you get the point. We need off topic posts, even if we need
moderation sometimes. Thank you Kaleb for hosting this list, and thank you to
all who post and keep me mentally stimulated.

Re: [MBZ] OT GUN They took their ball and when home

2013-01-19 Thread Gerry Archer
I'm saying that when a person joins the Mercedes List they should be
encouraged to also become a member of Mercedes Social or whatever you want
to call it besides Banned Light. That way, those interested strictly in
Mercedes could access only the Mercedes list, and those who want to discuss
other subjects could access Mercedes Social or both. Those who persisted in
discussing non-Mercedes items on the Mercedes list would be removed for a
variable length of time from the Mercedes list after several warnings, but
not from the social list. It wouldn't be long before everyone got the
message that the Mercedes list was strictly about Mercedes and that it would
be enforced. Moderators would probably be essential so you or a single
moderator wouldn't be targetted by someone who was removed.
You would lose some members who prefer unrestricted lists, but you would
probably see more members submitting comments and questions on the Mercedes
List.

Since this list is primarily a Right Wing list, you probably lose a good
many Moderate and Left Wing Mercedes owners. Believe it or not, there
are a lot of Moderates and Left Wingers who drive Mercedes. They would be
more inclined to join a strictly Mercedes List and buy parts from Rusty.

Of course, this is your list and there is nothing right or wrong, good or
bad about whatever you do with it.

I could go live in an HOA too but I won't.

The thing I like about this list is the offtopic talk. If I wanted to just know
about Mercedes I could go to peachparts.

Moderator is often another term for petty tyrant. I think we're lucky here
that our tyrant (he's not petty) is pretty fair and balanced. Add to that a
fairly fair and balanced population and bannings are few.

Once you start putting rules on it you ruin the discussion the same way adults
like to ruin sandlot baseball.

2013-01-19 Thread ernest breakfield

hi Kaleb!

while the cumulative wealth of knowledge amongst the users here is
truly admirable, i (for one) think it would be wonderful if this list
was dedicated to Mercedes stuff, instead of being the chat room that
some people here clearly seem to want/need. there's plenty of places for
that (and more could be made, if necessary) but as long as people can't
seem to at least keep the Subject Lines relative to their messages
content, it makes it really hard to wade through the chaff looking for
the stuff of value. in the popular vernacular, the Signal:Noise here is
poor.

i also have to agree with Gerry; i would never have guessed that a
list named banned lite was for social banter. maybe something like
MBZ Social would better convey the tone, and those who like to play in
a cat box can still play in Banned, if that's how they like to play.

(i barely found this post, since the majority of what passes by on
this list barely gets a quick scan before meeting the Delete Key. if
Subject lines were kept relevant, it would be safe to just Delete
anything marked OT,...)

cheers!

Well, department of justice statistics show that number of homicides by knives
is just a little less than homicides using a rifle. If you add in blunt
instruments and hand/fist/feet, all those exceed the number of homicides by
rifle.

Homicides by handgun are far higher, like ten times higher, than rifle or knife
or blunt instrument homicides. Why no outcry about handguns?

Re: [MBZ] OT GUN They took their ball and when home

2013-01-18 Thread Greg Fiorentino
I guess that the point you are attempting to make is that the idea of such
heinous attacks without an assault rifle (or at least a firearm of some
sort) is not plausible, or that the number of victims would be much smaller.
If your theory were correct, then such acts would not occur, or would be
very rare, or there would be much fewer victims in a place where firearms
are tightly controlled.

But the following shows that your theory falls flat in the face of FACTS:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29

25 dead and 115 injured!

I guess you thought the idea of someone bashing kids' heads with a hammer is
absurd and funny. Remember that a hammer might not kill as surely as an
AR-15, so perhaps the fatality rate might not be as high. But a quick death
might be kinder to a child and his family than a lifetime of severe
disability from permanent brain damage.

The FACT is that evil or madness will not be stopped by eliminating
firearms!

Best regards to all,

Greg

Republicans control the house, no national gun control measure will

be passed. Supreme court is VERY supportive of the second amendment,
will probably quash anything stupid done by state and local
governments. It's all a distraction, a bunch of noise, and anyone
selling guns or ammo is getting rich, and the politicians can avoid
doing any real work, yet look good to their polarized constituents,
until the next self-made crisis comes along.

 Whole episode is quite disgusting.

What's funny is that some people think guns are not at fault - ever
- for anything bad/evil/violent. They are mere inanimate objects, no
more dangerous than a toothpick or banana, since someone somewhere is
evil enough to do great harm with any ordinary object. That's what I
call reductio ad absurdo.

I say let's give this entire exchange a decent burial and get back to
CARS and DIESELS, and limit OT conversations according to the rules of
the list that bar political topics. This is a rule that the
listmeister currently refuses to enforce, perhaps because he happens
to be a passionate advocate against any form of gun control and most
of the list members are of a like mind. RIP.

2013-01-18 Thread Greg Fiorentino
I say let's give this entire exchange a decent burial... I agree, as
long as I have the last word in this dialogue, Andrew!

Guns ARE dangerous! But they are not more dangerous than hammers, knives,
baseball bats, cars and other objects that kill and maim many when misused.

BTW I am not impressed with your incorrect and inappropriate use of the
Latin term reductio ad absurdum-- NOT absurdo. The toothpick and banana
reference is indeed absurd, but the Wikipedia reference I gave below (which
you no doubt didn't bother to look at) lists attacks against schoolchildren
WITHOUT firearms which actually took place in a country with strict gun
control. These events prove the plausibility of the argument that it is the
human being that is the threat, not a particular object. Citing facts does
not constitute a reductio ad absurdum argument. You need to work on your
critical thinking skills!

There is always something that can be used as a weapon. I have been trained
to use a Bic pen or even a NY Times as a deadly weapon. Keeping those
persons who would use violence against others off the streets is the better
answer.

Re: [MBZ] OT GUN They took their ball and when home

2013-01-18 Thread Dieselhead

I guess that the point you are attempting to make is that the idea of such
heinous attacks without an assault rifle (or at least a firearm of some
sort) is not plausible, or that the number of victims would be much smaller.
If your theory were correct, then such acts would not occur, or would be
very rare, or there would be much fewer victims in a place where firearms
are tightly controlled.

But the following shows that your theory falls flat in the face of FACTS:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%932012%29

25 dead and 115 injured!

By the same logic: No guns were used at the OKC Fed building,
therefore no one could be killed. Sounds good to me.

Greg

I still can't understand the irrational fear some people have of guns.

I think it is just a stigma passed down to them by their environment.
Possibly because in the Northeast and other areas that are anti-gun most
gun owners are cops and criminals.

In other parts of the country guns are just part of life and no big deal.

What annoys me the most is that these anti-gun people seem to want federal
bans on guns as if they know what's good for the entire country (and the
rest of us are just ignorant rednecks and hillbillies)

2013-01-18 Thread clay monroe
Even out west there is huge fear of fire arms.

It has more to do with the supposed civilized folks who inhabit urban areas
instead of the good people who live in suburbs or rural locations. Even
though a few urban denizens may hunt for sport, there is a greater percentage
of small town residents for whom hunting is a way of life.

Used to be that people abandoned school for deer hunting in high school in
November. At least in the rural town school I attended. My oldest kid grew up
in urban seattle and all the kids live in fear of guns. Taking off a week to
hunt Bambi is considered a hate crime. Closest his peers get to gun love is
to blast away virtual enemies in a video game.

West coast city folk live in fear of guns and the people of color who wield
them. Same as the city folk of the east. Rural residents are not so overcome
by guns or waste mental energy on fire arms. It would be akin to getting
involved in arguments over what is stocked in the out house.

It disgusts me that thousands of non-white children are killed every year by
armed violence and not a peep is heard about it. We (US government) kill dozens
of children with drone strikes in foreign countries and there isn't even a

and it's a national tragedy. Media spin, faux compassion, lies, and more lies.

Many laws, in many countries, all are written to hold an individual

one court, where a device , ie a rifle, has met the legal standard of Mens
Rea. Mens Rea [see Blacks Law Dictionary] requires two things, the Intent,
and the Act. Please produce for me a device that by it's own volition,
meets those qualifiers.

A man may assault another with a rock, club, or gun.. but the rock, club,
or gun are incapable of that act of assault by themselves.

To be progressively mislead into the improper use of such inflammatory
language, by those who at the same time loudly assault verbally themselves
is in large part responsible for the volatile rhetoric we have, on both
sides of the issue.

It is my considered opinion that those who are terrified of demons freely
demonize anything that they do not understand and being fearful run rather
than self educate and think logically.

Or, they are just damn crazy and not capable of logical thought.

Perhpas there is a difference in grammatical usage - assault as either a
verb or an adjective. A firearm that was designed to function optimally in
a role supporting an assault could be described as an assualt weapon.
Just as I have a hunting knife and a deer rifle.

That having been said, I fully support our right to own any type of firearm.

2013-01-16 Thread Max Dillon
The whole current debate about gun control, at the national level not on this
list, is a manufactured distraction to get the people's attention away from the
real problem: out of control federal spending.

Republicans control the house, no national gun control measure will be passed.
Supreme court is VERY supportive of the second amendment, will probably quash
anything stupid done by state and local governments. It's all a distraction, a
bunch of noise, and anyone selling guns or ammo is getting rich, and the
politicians can avoid doing any real work, yet look good to their polarized
constituents, until the next self-made crisis comes along.

Whole episode is quite disgusting.

2013-01-16 Thread Scott Ritchey
Actually, an assault rifle is a small arm (rifle or carbine) chambered for a
reduced power cartridge (as compared to a main battle rifle, like the M1 or
M14) and is which fully automatic (AKA a machine gun). Our highly reliable
and honest popular press (and now the politicos) mis-use the term to refer
to anything that looks like an assault rifle.
