This is interesting. The other day, I picked up a large driveline by the side of the road near my house. One end was buried about 3' in the ground, as if it flew off and torpedoed in there at a high rate of speed. What's interesting about the unit, is that it's entirely made of aluminum. Very lightweight and sturdy looking (the U-joint gave way). About 4 in diameter, so I assume it came from some kind of truck. Not sure what I'm gonna do with it, but I love collecting useless junk like this. On 12/9/06, David Brodbeck [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The article sez 60 mph. In trucking, we have dropped drive lines all the time but rarely do they drop on the interstate. Usually it's associated with sliding the trailer tandems, being stuck in a ditch/snow/mud when the driver overtorques the driveline. Only once have I delt with a driveline on the interstate at 63mph...happened in KCMO only about 3 miles from the International dealer. Yes, the temp control lights on my 240D have been unpredictably flakey for 3 or 4 years-sometimes touching the rheostat makes them on -other times turns them off. If the rheostat in your 240 is the same as that in my 1983 300TD, it is a rather crude device with a coil of fine wire glued into a ceramic base in semicircular form, with a wiper arm that rotates over the coil. The adhesive gave up in mine last year causing erratic operation. Once I pulled the IC, the failed adhesive spilled out in a fine white powder. Well, at least I now have confirmation that the problem is the rheostat, and that it also controls more than just the gauge cluster lights. Yes indeedy, they're all hooked up to it. Question: could it be moisture that somehow bridged the gap and allowed them to work? It's been raining all day. Random chance, really. The rheostat can be disassembled and cleaned and probably gotten going again, or you can replace it. Pretty easy on a 123. Pretty easy on anything but a 107, so far as I can tell. -- Jim

Ah, the method that got the turn signals working. That's my kind of fix. Actually I was twirling it as I drove home last night. Then I did something real bright: I noticed that when turned all the way to the right, it turned more without much force. I thought: ... Well, I don't know exactly what I thought. I just turned it more to the right. Off the knob and spring came. Doh. I kind of put it back on once home. I may wind up bridging the rheo., as discussed before, if more spinning doesn't work. Which reminds me, I've wanted for a long time now to get a fire extinguisher for each car we drive. I assume those, what is it? Halon? type are the preferred ones (leave less powder behind, etc.?) Re: [MBZ] Scary spots
Hi Bill, Wow! I can understand the change his pants thing!! That would have been me too! BTW, the crane were sometimes used when we needed to check things at the top of the tower but not all the others from the bottom on up - and like the elevator operator they would let it free fall until a few feet from the ground! WOuld drop from ~150' or so -- nothing *near* as scary as 3 miles! I had forgotten all that until you told the story but the crane operators at the shipyard would play their game on people going to the ship while it was in drydock - before gangways were in place. Machinist/etc would need to go aboard to take measurements so they could start making repair parts as soon as possible. They'd get in a 4'x4' steel box open on top - and with a handrail around it - then the crane (the cranes sat ~80' atop long metal legs that travelled on RR tracks up and down the pier) would pick up the box and before going to the ship they'd take the passengers as far up as possible, then swing them out wy over the river! The crane operator did it to the wrong guy ince and was convinced he shouldn't play that particular joke anymore or he'd be singing tenor in the choir! What a world -- being the new guy at work always had certain traditions - ;-) Like sending the new guy from deep in the aircraft carrier we were working on to the toolshed on the pier (a mile+ walk) to bring back some left handed monkey wrenches - or blasting powder to remove some overhead studs. Or weld their exposed steel safety shoes to the metal deck while they sleep at lunch - they would freak out thinking their leg was paralyzed. ;-) That's enuf for now -- ;-) Sincerely, Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D Turbo) A Blood Test for your oil - www.youroil.net For Test Results http://members.rennlist.com/oil Weber Carb Stuff http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs http://members.rennlist.com/my_911/Index.htm For my Paint Job Info - Original Message - From: BillR [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Mercedes Discussion List' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2006 8:51 PM Subject: [MBZ] Scary spots Sometimes while on the top platform the tower would sway in the breeze - *very* disconcerting! Larry - I am with you on the disconcerting events up high [Going to the top in a bucket truck was enough for me] but a friend had one that topped anything I can imagine. He is an engineer who was visiting one of the company deep mines somewhere. He got on the 'elevator' and the operator did the usual - let it free fall for three miles, just counting the white marks on the cable so he would know when to stop. Friend said after he decided he was still alive he had to come back up and change pants. Did not see what he had gone there to see, and decided he didn't need to if it meant another trip like that. No thanks. I live in the town next to GM's biggest Canadian plant - Oshawa (just east of Toronto). I can see this being a big news item here. 2003 products (~ 820,000 produced): Oshawa Car Plant Number 1 produces the Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Impala passenger cars. Plant Number 2 produces the Buick Century, Buick Regal and the new Pontiac Grand Prix passenger cars. The Oshawa Truck Plant produces the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size extended cab pickup trucks. http://email.gmcanada.com/corpdb/cachq/pressrel.nsf/0/1d6e2384bce8169985256d4900694dcf?OpenDocument Tim 1982 300TD Moby On 11/21/05, Rich Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The company's contract with the United Auto Workers union essentially prevents layoffs before it expires in September 2007, as the company needs to pay union members whether or not there is a job for them. --R

And these short-sighted idiots are continuing to put sll their eggs in the one basket of big SUV's. Talk about being the authours of their own misfortune! Yeah, I remember the ads for the Xbody Chevys. It's the first Chevy of the 80's and it turns out to be the WORST chevy of the 80's.. Of course it helps to have a populace that was raised on their mediocrity and swallows the propaganda about supporting their neighbours by buying our cars... Where is that same patriotism now? They are going to push for that, and for the US (maybe Canadian too, wouldn't be surprised) taxpayer to pick up all their pension obligations too, whether by bankrupty or otherwise. Sweet deal for the union workers all around -- get paid whether you work or not, great pension bennies paid for by the taxpayer. Oh, and I'm sure the really really smart high-paid GM execs will get theirs too. Build crap for years, lose market share, keep negotiating those great deals, get your exec perks, then throw it all on the taxpayer. --R (with 3 chebbie trucks right now) Jeff Zedic wrote: Of all the US companies, GM more than anybody should be pushing for universal health coverage but they're stuck in the past on that one too!

Lessee. Mercedes Benz, Toada, Nissan, and Hondog are all American made (at least one plant in the US) Many Detroit products are Japanese cars built in the US, Mexico, Japan or who knows where. Buy one and support your neighbor. Guess we are all patriots because Chrysler is an American company, Right? At 02:56 PM 11/21/2005, you wrote: Where is that same patriotism now?
