Re: [MBZ] OT Brit Aircraft

2005-11-25 Thread frederick w moir

Deneal.
I suggest that you READ what was written. Viscounts corroded, mostly in the
belly area, and it was not checked, found or fixed until there were a
number of failures. The Hawaiian airliner that lost its' roof was a
victim of corrosion and poor maintenance.
To re-state:- Comet Two's with square windows failed at the rear toilet
windows, fatigue. RAF Transport Command bought quite a few retrofitted with
round windows and they saw many years of good service. Come 4's were a much
improved aircraft and also saw many years of service, esp. in Africa.
Public opinion was against them, even though they were a different bird.

[MBZ] OT Speaker Repair

2005-11-29 Thread frederick w moir

Hi,All.
This is an OT request for info about Stereo speaker repairs. I have an
old, circa 1980, pair of made in Poland stereo speakers that need
repair/replacement of the foam plastic suspension stuff around the
speaker cone. The speaker cone itself is in as new condition, the foam has
partly separated and is very fragile. These 10 speakers have a mount
(body?) ring of machined aluminum about 1 thick. Questions, are these
worth fixing, does anyone still do this? or should I just buy new speakers?

As you can tell, I'm not at all knowledgeable about audio bits and thingys.

[MBZ] VW P/U

2005-12-01 Thread frederick w moir

Hi, All.
I've had 2 81 VW's, Rabbit and Dasher wagon, The only fuel related problem
that I had with either of them was that the hose from the tank to the fuel
line, in the rear of the car , was braided hose and when checked
(finally!) was found to be wet. (sound familiar?). Replacing the hose let
me park the car and an hour later restart, just as it's supposed to, and
not have the fuel run back to the tank due to air creeping in through the
failing hose. This was especially troublesome when parked facing uphill.
Check all of the fuel hoses, would be my first job before forking over the
cash.

YMMV

[MBZ] Rod Balance, or not

2005-12-03 Thread frederick w moir

Hi, all.
To replace an old connecting rod with a new updated rod may be possible if
you can remove the old rod and have the new rod matched to the old. If not
the extra mass of the new and stronger, i.e. heavier, rod will throw things
off. Consider, the few grams of extra mass will be reciprocating from zero
to 3000 rpm in usual service and perhaps more in highway cruising. I would
not do that to any of my engines for fear of vibration that may well end in
catastrophic failure. My $.02

coupled with a very slow loss of coolant. There are no external coolant
leaks visible. I changed the M1 from 15w to 5w (winter's coming) and
replaced the front exhaust pipe and a few days later the car would start on
4 cyl. and then run on 5 after about 20 seconds attended by a small cloud
of BLUE smoke. The car when warm runs very well, a couple of weeks ago it
went in excess of 161Kph (until I chickened out) and still will, I'm sure.
Q. Head gasket? (Please don't say cracked head, besides mine, that is.) ??

Hi, All.
Today the weather was fine if cold and I was evaluating the '85 300TD for
a small amount of rust appearing at the pass. lower rear wheel arch, when I

Question:- Can I put some small pressure, 15psi, into the tank and
re-expand it safely? Comments? Real and helpful comments would be preferred.

I've gotten away with it on a few cars. One is the wagon I drive the
most. I plugged every line coming out of it and used a tapered rubber
stopper like the item used to pressure test radiators under water. It
would help if you have a regulated air supply. Keep upping the pressure
until it takes the right shape. Use caution releasing the pressure to
avoid smelling like the local oil burner repairman.

On an '85 190D it isn't too hard to get the starter out, or check the
connections. Apart from the lower bolt the rest is accessible from
the drivers side top, after removing the air filter box complete. A
190E is (was) a lot more difficult as the cruise actuator is in front
of the starter and it is under the fuel injection stuff on the hard
to remove manifold. Not fun in the cold, but most is doable from

[MBZ] Portable Garages

Hi, Alles.
Ole Man Winter did it to my HF Portable garage today. Down over the
top of my 300TD. I had just finished with the driveway next door and
mine and had put away the snow blower in the shed, locked up and
turned around, and thought aah s**t!. Much careful shovelling to
free the cover from the very bent frame, then took apart the frame
and peeled that crap off my car. Y'know, someone up there likes me,
no damage! Now all that is needed is a car cover until spring. Dodged

Re: [MBZ] 60x with broken chain and cam

2007-12-30 Thread Frederick W Moir

So what are the chances that a 602 that broke the chain and broke the
cam does NOT have bent valves? Is is possible that the cam broke
instead of bending a valve? Thinking maybe just replacing cam etc and
seeing what happens without pulling the head. Am I just farting in a
whirlwind?
--
Kaleb C. Striplin/Claremore, OK

  Kaleb et al.
It's possible that the valves would survive as they are vertical to
the piston crowns. However there is the question of compressed
(stunted) valves and the side push allowed by loose guides.
Measure twice and pray? As the cam broke, its hollow and liable to
break if miss-torqued, the cam bearings will also need scrutiny.
Is the timing vault cover and/or the oil pan cracked from the flailing chain?
Happened on my 601. bent #1 intake and the subsequent running wore a

The paper clip one fits a bit loosely in the slots and the 2mm one

[MBZ] Blower motor

2005-06-16 Thread frederick w moir

Hi, All.
I'm about to remove the covers to get at the heater blower motor. Have
RTFM, and the reduced archives, (now moved) and was wondering about
removing the wiper assembly. Specifcally, the rubber seal around the
gearbox that is pinched under the edge of the windshield. I took the
assembly out of my organ donor 190E 85, peeled the seal out from under the
edge of the glass and removed the whole thing to my workshop and still
could not see how to remove the large plastic housing about the gearbox.
Three screws in the bottom of the housing released one end of the cover,
and then I chickened out, not wanting to destroy a good assembly. If any
one can talk me through this (in words of one syllable) I shall be most
grateful.

one or two Beckers from Ebay, but after reaching my max bid there are still
people who have so much ego invested that they must have it, if only to
deny it to someone else. ( or so it appears to me ). Maybe there are still
people who pay retail?

Free for the asking. There was nothing for me at this J/Y but there were
three V8 vergasse cars, I have vin on two of them:-116.033 12 033629 brown
