Re: [MBZ] OT Brit Aircraft
Deneal. I suggest that you READ what was written. Viscounts corroded, mostly in the belly area, and it was not checked, found or fixed until there were a number of failures. The Hawaiian airliner that lost its' roof was a victim of corrosion and poor maintenance. To re-state:- Comet Two's with square windows failed at the rear toilet windows, fatigue. RAF Transport Command bought quite a few retrofitted with round windows and they saw many years of good service. Come 4's were a much improved aircraft and also saw many years of service, esp. in Africa. Public opinion was against them, even though they were a different bird. Fred Moir Ex British Nutter. [MBZ] OT Speaker Repair
Hi,All. This is an OT request for info about Stereo speaker repairs. I have an old, circa 1980, pair of made in Poland stereo speakers that need repair/replacement of the foam plastic suspension stuff around the speaker cone. The speaker cone itself is in as new condition, the foam has partly separated and is very fragile. These 10 speakers have a mount (body?) ring of machined aluminum about 1 thick. Questions, are these worth fixing, does anyone still do this? or should I just buy new speakers? As you can tell, I'm not at all knowledgeable about audio bits and thingys. TIA Fred Moir Lynn MA Old diesels, old stereos, old body, ancient brain.

[MBZ] VW P/U
Hi, All. I've had 2 81 VW's, Rabbit and Dasher wagon, The only fuel related problem that I had with either of them was that the hose from the tank to the fuel line, in the rear of the car , was braided hose and when checked (finally!) was found to be wet. (sound familiar?). Replacing the hose let me park the car and an hour later restart, just as it's supposed to, and not have the fuel run back to the tank due to air creeping in through the failing hose. This was especially troublesome when parked facing uphill. Check all of the fuel hoses, would be my first job before forking over the cash. YMMV Fred Moir Lynn MA. 84 190D 2.2 Runs well, makes odd noises (cracked piston?) 85 300TD 3.0 Excellent! 87 190DT 2.5 Blown head gasket (sigh)

[MBZ] Rod Balance, or not
Hi, all. To replace an old connecting rod with a new updated rod may be possible if you can remove the old rod and have the new rod matched to the old. If not the extra mass of the new and stronger, i.e. heavier, rod will throw things off. Consider, the few grams of extra mass will be reciprocating from zero to 3000 rpm in usual service and perhaps more in highway cruising. I would not do that to any of my engines for fear of vibration that may well end in catastrophic failure. My $.02 Fred Moir Lynn MA Dieselitis Maximus

[MBZ] Portable Garages
Hi, Alles. Ole Man Winter did it to my HF Portable garage today. Down over the top of my 300TD. I had just finished with the driveway next door and mine and had put away the snow blower in the shed, locked up and turned around, and thought aah s**t!. Much careful shovelling to free the cover from the very bent frame, then took apart the frame and peeled that crap off my car. Y'know, someone up there likes me, no damage! Now all that is needed is a car cover until spring. Dodged the bullet, this time. 8 plus inches of wet snow and then rain, was too much for it. Pictures at 11. So what are the chances that a 602 that broke the chain and broke the cam does NOT have bent valves? Is is possible that the cam broke instead of bending a valve? Thinking maybe just replacing cam etc and seeing what happens without pulling the head. Am I just farting in a whirlwind? -- Kaleb C. Striplin/Claremore, OK Kaleb et al. It's possible that the valves would survive as they are vertical to the piston crowns. However there is the question of compressed (stunted) valves and the side push allowed by loose guides. Measure twice and pray? As the cam broke, its hollow and liable to break if miss-torqued, the cam bearings will also need scrutiny. [MBZ] Breaks Brakes
Hi, All. So, there I was with new front disks, new pads for FR, rebuild kits (just in case), All Hail Rusty!, Mobil1 grease, having a wonderful time. Next came flushing the fluid on my 87 190DT, hooked up my trusty Speedi-bleed and Blooey, Dot 4 everywhere and on Joanne's Toyota too! I did put in new grommets (Rusty) and checked the two nubbins on top all good, the 18 year old plastic let go. Took A photo. I just knew that things were going too well! ROTFLMAO! ( I know I'm strange). TTFN Fred Moir Lynn MA 190DT New brakes! ( Kaleb bounced my email, too big. How do you include a picture with text and stay under 40k?)
[MBZ] Test
Klatta Beings, This is a test to see if I have a brain! Autocomplete is a nasty thing, sends stuff to (mumble) dot org! I'm going out to buy a pint of Moose Tracks! TTFN Fred Moir Lynn MA
[MBZ] No brainer
Hi, All. As I have no brain, maybe I can get a job at a nuclear power station, Doh! Finished my half of the Moose Tracks, maybe me and she who must be obeyed can start up a weekly ice cream fest! Have a greasy time. Fred Moir Lynn MA
[MBZ] Carb sync
Hi, All. I just went down to check on my old Uni-Syn, seems to be gone. To use a sync tool on a carb. that has no clear access, use a short piece of large rubber hose the size of the carb. neck between the carb and tool. If I find the Uni-Syn I'll let you know. [MBZ] Flying Freebie
Hi, All. Home with a sore jaw from the dentist's tender mercies, The pain killers had me flying, so, when my feet touched down, it was off to the Junkyard! (therapy) I scavenged a Black book parts catalog for 450SE/SEL 116 1972 U.S. Version. Free for the asking. There was nothing for me at this J/Y but there were three V8 vergasse cars, I have vin on two of them:-116.033 12 033629 brown with 3 hubcaps still on it, spare wheel well had small rust thru. and a Euro with H4 lights and wipers 116.028 12 045648 or 045548 the vin plate on the door post was written in in pen and ink and hard to read. The 045548 was the chassis No. Black on black, and actually looked pretty good, with not much gone. The other one was a 380S?? I must take more of that medicine, It makes me seem normal. NOT! TTFN Fred Moir Lynn MA Dieselitis and pain-killers and flying cars.
[MBZ] No go power
Hi, All. Synapse fired at the no torque/stalls. I had a BMW 1600 with (unknown to me!) bad points, that would start right up hot or cold and then die the moment that you touched the throttle. Could our esteemed colleague have poor ignition? Just my $0.02 worth, maybe even worthless. Never Mind. (Salute to Gilda Radner). TTFN Fred Moir Lynn MA Saturday is PP and Diesel heaven.
[MBZ] 190DT shutoff
Hi, All. Reply to Don Roberto. When I replaced the shutoff vacuum pukky, I first got a replacement from Rusty (All Hail Rusty!), removed the intake manifold, (new gasket same source) tried not to break anything removing the electrical connector. The locking ring for the conn. came off after rotating it around 'til it slid up off the base. replaced the vacuum shut off with a new (plastic i.e. cheap) replacement and using Mightyvac confirmed correct operation. Reassembled everything as per the photo's I took beforehand, and, taking a DEEP breath restarted the beast and it then shut off as designed. (phew!) More than you wanted to know I'll bet!
