I know what you mean. When I first got it I thought it was just the
wrinkles

at the trailing edges, but they are only part of it.

Now it's worse... the apprentice at my friend's shop did not make sure the
hood was latched after they changed the oil, and when we got the tail end
of
Katrina the hood blew open right back and smashed the windshield.
Remarkably

the hood still *looks* about the same, but now it's so hard to move I am
pretty sure the inspectors will fail it on that.

And the weather has been too lousy to even get the glass guy to come and
re/re the glass into it, from my parts car

Oh, but it gets better! Looks like my pal messed up when he unhooked the
driveshaft to tow the car... he pulled the bolts but the flanges were
still

caught together. When we went to hook it back up, we had to drill out all
the metal sleeves in the flex joint as they were deformed from the strain.
Tranny has started to screech a little and seems to be going out... I
figure

he probably burned out the front pump.

Keeeripes.

By bizarre coincidence, both of the 240Ds I recently acquired have the
same
issue, though to different degrees. It looks like they in the past had
very
light front-end shunts, just enough to wrinkle the fenders a touch at
the

front, and to make the hood hard to open -- binds against the cowl panel
when you try to lift it.

I was going to send one to the inspection station that way and let them
complain about it if they chose to, but now I'm chickening out.

Now I am assuming (always a dangerous word when I get around cars) that
what
is needed here is some gentle but very determined leverage, to push the
hood
forward again. So my question is, how to best do this? Along the rear
edge

of the hood? At the hinges?

There is no visual indication where the buckle is, and the hood pretty
much
latches/releases okay.

Thanks

BUT, Pimental's research fails to consider actually requiring the farmers to
produce an oil producing crop on the land they are being PAID NOT TO USE.
Get rid of the crop subsidies and replace them with a purchasing plan for

Curt,

The vegoil production data came from David Pimental, a
prominent agricultural researcher from Cornell Univ.
He has done extensive studies of oilseed production
and has concluded that vegoil fuel is both
economically and ecologically unsustainable. The
apparent low price of veg oil is a result of market
distortions caused by government crop subsidies, both
in the US and abroad. David is a strong advocate of
WVO biodiesel and synfuels from coal. IIRC coal has a
50 percent yield of diesel grade synfuel, and the US
has enormous coal reserves. Coal synfuel is also much
cleaner burning than petro diesel. We need to start
looking into synfuels.

slight occurance of both);

#1. The price of VO will rise to the point where
diesel is cheaper

and/or

#2. The price of diesel will fall to the point where
its cheaper than svo

In either case once diesel is cheaper many of the
people buying svo will switch back to diesel or work
harder on their wvo options. Either way I can't see
the number of people buying svo in bulk at Costco
having any impact on the worldwide svo supply...

Where did you get your data about how much svo the
country could produce?

The one good thing I could possibly see happening is
some upward pressure on the price of svo could send

Biovolks,

Speaking as an ardent WVO biodiesel advocate,
hearing
about large scale vegoil use for diesel fuel
troubles
me. Vegoil is intended first and foremost for food,
not vehicle fuel. If the entire available cropland
in
the US were converted to vegoil production, it would
satisfy less than one-sixth of the fuel needs of the
commercial truck fleet. Extensive retail purchasing
of cooking oil for fuel will inevitably lead to an
ugly backlash from government officials. Do we want
the fuel doors on our cars to have a government seal
to be opened only by a licensed dealer? If we think
the government wields a heavy hand on occasion, just
wait until people start messing with the nation's
food
supply. Prudence dictates that we should hunt down
more WVO sources and leave the cooking oil alone.

Cheers,

Bruce [assumes defensive crouch]

BT WRONG!

From http://www.scoutconnection.com/ FAQ section:

8. When did International offer a diesel-powered Scout?
1976 was the first year for a diesel-powered Scout. International used the
Nissan SD-33 diesel engine for fuel economy.

Complaints of not enough power prompted International to replace the SD-33
with the SD-33T (Turbocharged) diesel engine in 1980. The diesel-powered
Scouts were very popular with their fuel-saving economy of 20 mpg city and
30 mpg highway.
End Quote

The Nissan diesel was available for many years. Diesel Scouts are getting
rare because of the high repair costs, combined with diesel
ignorance. Most of the remaining Diesels have been converted to gas 345
v-8. One of the nice things about IH Scouts and pickups is that any
drivetrain option can be converted to any other drivetrain option with
factory parts. A 2wd 304 auto pickup can be converted to a 392 4barrel, 4
speed 4wd but unbolting and bolting on the new parts.

Unfortunately, the Nissan was detuned for reliability and the turbo was
detuned also. They were slow. They are about like driving a 123 240D
auto, and are probably even slower than that. The engine can be tuned for
more power They are, like a 240D, good dependable engines as stock. As
the HP goes up the durability decreases.

International's own diesel engines were too heavy for automotive use, so
they bought the Nissan diesels to catch the growing popularity of Diesels

I appologize if you get this twice. Sent it the first time from the wrong
email account...
   All,

I've finally broken down and decided to get rid of the 300D. My wife's
been

bugging me to get rid of a car for a year now, and the E320 is a whole lot
more fun to drive.

She'd rather see me wasting my time tinkering with a 560SL (that she can
drive) than an old stinky diesel...

Gregg,
I am very interested in the 81. Can you hold on to it for me for a couple
weeks so I can make arrangements to come get it? Any pics at all? I
recently sold my 82 240D and really wish I hadn't. I would really LOVE to
try to save that car if you could give me a little time.

Subject: [MBZ] FS: two very cheap stickshift 240D's

hello all,
After a lot of money and not having a working car for months, I am giving
up on trying to fix up the dud 240D I bought last year from darrell. It's
a total POS and even after a thousand dollars of work to try to get it
sellable to recover _some_ of the money, it still isn't ready for prime
time. I'm going to just get rid of it. I'm asking $200, local pickup only.
It's got some decent parts on it and very little rust. It's an '81,
stickshift, with alloy wheels and euro headlights. It kind of drives, but
the clutch won't disengage. I just spent another 400 bucks having the
master and slave cylinders replaced and the clutch still doesn't
disengage. so , if one gets it rolling one can jam it into gear and
drive it, but, well, don't stop on an uphill.

I'm also giving up on my other 240D, the one that served me well til the
clutch hydraulics failed, though it was burning tons of oil and it's
gotten pretty rusty. That car had the classic slave cylinder failure, but
i gambled wrong and put the money into replacing the clutch gear on the
other car, and frankly there's too much money sunk into these cars to
really continue. This one is an '82. The blue car is rusty, but it was
known working and served me for a number of years. I'm asking $200 for
this one, too. The tires alone cost more than that. The clutch and tranny
are very strong on that one, if anyone wants to do a manual conversion of
an automatic. I'd thought that when the clutch failed on the black car
(the '81) it was the same thing that went on the blue car, but apparently
the clutch on that one is hosed in more exciting and expensive ways.

Both cars are in Pittsburgh, PA, and if someone has a garage and a desire
for lots of W123 parts, this is a very cheap source. I won't deliver them,
and i won't pick and pull parts off of them unless it's really worth my
while. I don't have a working car so getting stuff to the post office to
ship is not easy now. Basically they have to get out of here, I can't keep
paying insurance on two dead cars.

Any takers? Otherwise, they go off to the shredder. scrap price is
almost $100 on them.

My years-long quest for a decent reliable stickshift diesel still
continues. I miss my Jetta. Poor car rusted literally to pieces, but
it was a great ride (and got 52 miles on a gallon of No. 2 on the
highway). The blue car served me for years, but darrel's POS hasn't gone
700 miles since I bought it's cost me over $4500 altogether.

Anyone interested?

Re: [MBZ] why does a gas engine create vacuum and a diesel does not?

2005-10-26 Thread Mike Canfield
Are you sure you are not referring to the Venturi principle? When a large
volume of material is made to fit through a smaller diameter hole(such as
the venturi in a carb) the pressure INCREASES. The increases airflow and
turbulence atomize the gasoline as it comes out of either the injector in a
TBI or the jet in a carb.

John M McIntosh wrote:

This gets at the point that there are actually *two* types of vacuum
available on many gasoline engines: manifold vacuum and carburator vacuum.

Manifold vacuum is created by the restriction of the throttle plate.
It's highest when the throttle is closed, and drops to nearly 0 when the
throttle is open. This is what powers your vacuum brake booster and all
that other stuff that diesels have to have a vacuum pump to run.

Carburator vacuum is caused by the Bernoulli effect. As air moves
through the restricted area at the carburator throat it speeds up,
creating a pressure drop. This helps atomize the gasoline in the carb.
Carburator vacuum is related to the velocity of air going through the
carb throat, so it's greatest at full throttle and high engine speeds.
For that reason it's tapped off to control distributor advance, in many
cars.

Bzzzt - wrong. The same volume flowing through a smaller area
in the same time span requires higher speed. Higher speed produces
lower pressure. The fuel is literally sucked out of the carburator
porportionaly to the speed of the air - more vacuum (lower manifold
pressure)=faster air through the ventury=lower pressure=more fuel
sprayed into the air=more power. Posibly a minor point - the low
pressure area is just behind the narrowest part of the venturi, so
yes, there would be an increase of pressure as th air is squezzed into
the smaller area, then a decrease as it expands on the other side.
However, it is the lowered pressure that sucks the fuel from the jets

Mike Said I want another 240D...I am in the NEWhat is the asking

Mike

to all: I went an inspected car today. Has 66,000 +/- miles on it.
Original owner. I saw all maint. records Car is a Maroon colored paint and
is in very good shape with clear coat still in place. No rust. Has never
been driven in snow. One or two minor blemished and a small dime size
dent

on right side of car. Body is very nice. The thing has an after market
Calloway turbine. It is a standard shift and I could not notice anymore
power than a regular 240D. The gauges and the wine indicate I believe the
turbo is working. I had trouble getting it inot 1st as it wanted to go
into

reverse. A little more temperment than other 240D diesels I have driven
with standard. The turbo gauges meant the area where the ash tray is has
been bastardized and looks a bit off with these gauges. The car has a cd
player with no orginal Becker. Interior is a 8.5 to a 9 out of 10 and is
palimino MB tex. Has manual moon roof with electric windows. Vacuum door
locks work.

The turbo is placed when facing front of radiator on the left under the
intake and exhaust manifolds with the air filter housing being located via
some after market supports over the A/C reciever. The car has two diesel
filters plus inline filter.

Guy wants $8,000 for it, and I am not interested. I did not take pics but
email me off line and I can give you further info. I question the
longevity of having a turbo, but I assume it could be removed and placed
back to original and would be more appealling to a purist.

That's called exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Most Mercedes diesels
made since the early '80s have it. It lowers combustion temperatures,
the generation of NOx and lowers power while it's engaged.

The funny thing was that I was not told about the alarm system. So I went

The second anti-theft system I saw was a DWI system. This car you had to

It wasn't by design, but I came up with a infallible anti theft scheme.
Even

the shop at the dealership couldn't start the truck and had to call me at
home.
I installed an aux. electric oil pump to prime the top end and also cool
the

turbo after shut down. I set the controller on a one minute time delay on
start and three minutes extended run after shut down. One had to turn the
ignition key on and wait a minute before turning to start while the pump
was

running. If you didn't wait, nothing happened and everytime the key was
turned off, the minute started all over.
Was not the best thing to have for a get-away in a bank robbery.

ignition lock. I had this thing on a car back in college, it was a
plug/socket thing that had about 10 wires going into it, and a cap that
connected the proper ones, you took the cap off the socket and took it
with you. A pair of the wires were hooked to the distributor wiring to
keep the car from firing. It saved my car once after some AH popped the
ignition and tried to steal it from a parking lot in Cambridge, MA, car
theft capital of the world at the time. A couple weeks later I was out
in the lot changing oil, I see a car with 3 young urban individuals
driving through the lot slowly, two of them get out of the car, go to a
new Caddy, pop the door, start it in about 15 sec and peel out of there
with the 3rd one following in the original vehicle. I called the cops a
few minutes later with a description of both vehicles and the perps, and
they just laughed.

The first time I even thought about the SDL alarm was when it went off
in a
large hospital parking lot. I had no idea how to make the horn stop
blowing
so I drove out hoping it was timed to quit within a year or so.

This is the "WHY" part. I drove right by three uniformed security
guards
that were directing traffic and they all smiled and shook their heads.
I
suppose a thief would get the same response.

I hear alarms quite often in parking lots and never even look in that
direction.

Most of the talking alarms are aftermarket. You can get them that say
pretty much anything as well as some that can be programmed with your own
voice. The Viper's alarm is a dealer option. Used to be a Corvette around

Re: [MBZ] Retread - was: Pulling to one side

2005-11-07 Thread Mike Canfield
You are just guessing..I know several people that work in a local
retread shop and was a truck driver for a few years. The pieces on the road
ARE usually caps. Some(actually most) do have cords in them. Along with
underinflation, overloading is a big issue with comercial recaps. Passenger
car and light truck recaps are much better today than they were in the 80's
when they got the worst of thier reputation for coming apart but do come
apart if abused.
As far as the casing proving itself that's kida irrelevant...How many
properly inflated tires have you ever actually seen come apart? I have
owned thousands of tires, several with broken belts/cords and have had maybe
1/2 a dozen actually come apart. Retreads included.
From watching the process of recapping heavy truck tires there are several
steps in the process and alot of tires that come in do not pass each step of
the process due to defects(holes, broken cords, etc.) but some bad ones do
get by as USUALLY the inspection of the casing is only visual and as long as
the tire looks good when it comes out the next test is the road.
So basically if it has large ragged edges then it is likely a piece of a
new tire.If it is a piece of tread that looks like it may have had glue
on the inside it's a bad cap. Just ask a truck driver the next time you
come near a truck stop about cap separation and the fines the DOT imposes if
you are caught driving with a bad cap these days.

Sorry for the long post, Mike

I'd agree with Fmiser.

I spend over 50,000 miles a year on the road and I've seen more than a few
tire separations "in action". Every one I saw was a blowout, where there
was
a big 'bang' and lots of stuff in the air, including the tread. I've seen
a

truck tire tread fly up and clear three cars. Those tires that I could see
were a mangled mess. If they were just tread separation then the tire
carcass would still be inflated.

Okay.

I should probably just let this go by, but...

Very rarely is that big chunk of tire you see on the road (drivers often
call them "alligator") from a retread.

If a retread fails and the tread comes off, there would be no steel cords
in

loose pieces 'cause the cords are all in the casing.

Often a retread is _more_ reliable than a new tire because the casing has
already proven to be good.

Anyway, I have pulled a whole lot of dead tire pieces off of the highway
(my

contribution to highway safety) and seen many, many more. Of them, I have
not ever seen a large tire piece that I could be sure did not have any
steel

wire in it.

Of course, this doesn't mean it will never happen, just that it's easy to
think that "It must have come off a bad retread." when there's a big hunk
of

tread in the middle of the road. :)

And for what it's worth - the most common cause of a tire casing coming
apart and tossing chucks at the passing cars is under-inflation.

True story.

A lady I used to work with swerved to avoid a rabbit & had a head on
collision with a mini-van. She justified her actions by stating that She
did

not want to hurt the "poor rabbit".

Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, except for the "poor rabbit". She
hit the rabbit anyway! I wasn't at the scene of the crime but others told

I threatened to paint small rabbits down the side of Her car and the

The reason they tell people not to swerve is because most people have
trouble maitaining control of their cars in sudden swerving maneuvers.
Hitting a deer is rarely lethal, but people *do* get killed when they
try to avoid a deer and hit a tree or telephone pole instead.

rust.
Can anybody recommend a good body shop for rust repair in the DC - MD

Well, you won't find any steel in it if the tire doesn't have steel

Had a Jeepster Commando with the Buick 225 "Dauntless" V6. That thing was a
tractor..It had the torque to move anything but, typical of jeeps of the
era, was geared terribly low for the road and drank gas like it was free.

Put a 215V8 in it's place and it was ALOT more fun but not any better on
gas.

Yup, same engine, started life as a buick v8 missing two cylinders in the
sixties, was sold to kaiser for jeep engines, then kaiser was bought by
amc,

then amc sold the engine back to GM, who made it a bit bigger, and
eventually put a turbo and fuel injection on it. Sometime in the late
eighties

they got around to evening out the firing.

The one in my friend's 98 le sabre is amazingly smooth, and gets great
mileage on the highway. The car handles like it needs nav lights and a
ship-to-shore radio :)

I have to add to that a bit..ALL of those chemicals are not used at

full size now.park one next to an Excursion.)Waggies...They are
great vehicles...The electrical systems can be somewhat of a nightmare
at times and if it has Quadra-Trac the chain in the t-case should be
checked. Be prepared to spend a fortune on gas. They will pass anything
but a gas station and , from personal experience/abuse, I know they will
take way more of a beating than you are likely to give it.
Price still seems a bit high for an 80's modelI believe they made them
until 91(IIRC). I never paid more than a couple hundred bucks for the rust

Alex,
After reading the ad I would not bid without an in person inspection. Why
do they say the oil pressure sending unit needs replaced? Is this a typical
AMC 360 with a bad oil pump? Does it have oil pressure? The skip they
mention is probably carb related. No fun to rebuild or work on at all with
all the BS in the way. The clunk is probably the T-case chain and will
probably be good for a long time but, being a Benz owner, I can see you
wanting to fix every little thing to make it right and spending a fortune on
a vehicle that may never be right.

The fuse box is intended for power distribution but to keep things "tidy"
you want to get power from somewhere else? To put it plainlyDo you look

Where's the best place to find switched and unswitched power?
The fuse box looks too tidy to disturb...

Probably irrelevant, but on a SDL there is an auxiliary power
distribution
panel under the driver's footrest. Your car may have something similar.
That said, adding a ring terminal _behind_ the fuse box to one of the
studs
there is extremely clean, though is a bit of a PITA to do. Make _sure_
you
disconnect the battery first!

The radio gets both switched and unswitched power, you could pull it and
make your connections there, if power draw is modest.

Has anyone suggested a squirt of oil in each cylinder to help seal the rings
and putting 24 volts to the starter? Briefly, of course, so you don't burn
up the starter but that will surely make it spin faster. I've never tried
it on a diesel but it works wonders for old worn out Chebby smallblocks and

TIA all,

A tow start will often work much more quickly than anything else does,
but only because you can get the engine running faster and with the
engine running faster, even seriously low compression CAN be overcome.

Remember, the starter seldom goes much faster than 300-400 rpm. A tow
start at 30 mph can get the engine going at thousands of rpm.

If the problems relate to the valves and rings not yet seating in, the
next time you start the car - it will start MUCH more easily. If the
problem is valves hanging open because of improper adjustment, broken
rings/scored cylinder walls or poor fuel distribution and supply, the
the engine will remain VERY hard to start.

Not bad considering, was starting fine then suddenly didn't want to when
it
turned about -12degC at night here. Odd, rule of thumb I have always gone
by
in this area (as told to me by an old-timer mercedes wrench) is that if
they

start in early to mid November, you are pretty good to go for the winter.
This was like it fired up fairly easily one day, then was stone dead in
the

morning the next day after the temps dropped (and not by that much).

I have a set of cleaned/rebuilt injectors ready to go into tomorrow. One
or
two are sticking and that doesn't help matters at all when they act up. I
am

wondering about the valve adjustment too.

Other than that runs great, though I have to find where the oil leak is
coming from. We're talking Exxon Valdez here. Once I do that I can put
synthetic in, which it needs.

So far:
- tires
- park/neutral switch
- glow relay + glow plugs
- 'fixed' hood opening problem (took a body hammer to the cowl leading
edge)

- shutoff diaphragm
- brakes all around

It will also get euro headlamps this week and I plan to switch over to
steel

wheels with hubcaps.

I'm going to get pics up once I have the lights in, and when the roads
clear

up enough here so I can actually WASH the dang thing.

Best used car value ever, Mike! (Knocking heavily on desk as I say that,
mind.)

Now I want a 300cd to keep it company. But before that I have to get the
other 240d, the Texas car with the dead cylinder, back to life.

cheers

Mac

Such sudden temperature sensitivity smells of valves to me. Certainly
it's an easy enough check. I believe they tend to go tight with time,
and it doesn't take much to kill starting compression.

Re: [MBZ] OT Concealed Carry, was Global warming

2005-11-28 Thread Mike Canfield
Don't now about you folks but you seem to be taking a missing firearm very
lightly! Why on earth would you have to ask a freakin discussion list about
cars if they thought a missing firearm is serious or not? Suppose some KID
has stolen it..WHAT THEN? Should you have waited to AT LEAST GET OFF
YOUR ASS IN FRONT OF YOUR PC AND LOOK FOR THE DAMN GUN BEFORE SOMEONE GETS
KILLED?? I can't believe you would leave the trunk unlocked either!
Sorry for the offensive post but the "OH WELL" attitude on this post

exactly. there were 8 guns in the trunk. one is not there. could have
fallen under something. it is a 35 year old car. will have to make a more

yeah, this is an interesting point which is covered, i believe, in the
current NRA magazine. There is some general 21 foot law enforcement rule
for shooting a guy brandishing a knife. while it would take me 2 weeks to
get to you from 21 feet, it took knife attackers under 1.5 seconds.

As i'm an idiot, my initial reaction to this was to go online and look at
knives to buy.

on a more serious note, my chinese AK is missing. I remember putting it
in
the trunk for my trip to NC this weekend, but I did not see it (did see
all
the other guns, however) when i opened the trunk. At what point if any am
i
morally or legally responsible to report this loss to the authorities? I
am
horribly embarrassed by this and am still working under the presumption
that
it will "show up" some time soon, but i am getting a bit nervous that it
wasn't in it's regular gun case when i came home a few minutes ago.

Re: [MBZ] Cold Weather Get In and Go

2005-11-29 Thread Mike Canfield
Here's my $.02 if you want it. Let your car warm up for 5 minutes or so in
the warm weather and 10 minutes in the really cold stuff. Just because the
oil pressure guage shows pressure it doesn't always mean EVERYTHING in the
engine is oiled yet. My best friends father used to do a demonstration with
an old Chevy 250 inline 6. He would remove te rocker cover and tell someone
to start the car and watch the manual oil pressure gauge he had under the
hood. The gauge would go up after only a few seconds signifying oil
pressure.BUTThe rockers were still not getting oil.Took some of
them a good minute and a half to pump up the lifters and get the whole
engine oiling properly.
My other logic is that different metals expand and contract differently
depending on temp as well. The engine was designed to run at it's "proper
operating temperature" and therefore I would assume that putting the engine
under load at the improper temperature would also mean that many of the
bearings and such are not to thier proper clearances therefore causing undue
wear.

We were having discussions today at the old nuke plant about cold weather
starting (well...cold by our standards [39 degrees]). Some were saying as
soon as one sees oil pressure, you can take off like a scalded dog...both
for gassers and diesels. Others say let it warm until it's off the cold
peg. Dr. Booth has always said MB diesels were not intended to idle for
more than a couple of minutes. Since it very seldom gets cold here, I've
forgotten. When I lived in IL back in the day, I just plugged in my 220D
each night when it was cold and the temp gauge was always off the cold
peg.

What's the deal?

So if you bought it from a dude in a parking lot, did you have to fill
out any papework to transfer ownership? Around here, if you buy a gun
at a gun store or whatever, you have to fill out this deal and answer
some questions, they call a phone number and find out if you are
approved or not. The gun is then tranferred to you. If you buy from an
individual, most of the time its just a cash deal and thats it. Its
possible the seller will want to go to a gun dealer and have the
paperwork filled out to transfer the gun to you.

As fun as it is to drive a new (to you) car. Driving a used vehicle
you just bought 400 miles is not my idea of enjoyment. Every car I buy
that isn't in my "comfort" radius is not driven home. I always want to
make sure that I, myself, am not the cause of some major repair bill
because I wasn't patient about jumping in and taking off. Making
required checks isn't really "PC" to do in the PO's driveway. Plus,
personally, I take the vehicle to a qualified Brand mechanic to do
immediate fluid exchanges before such use as well. That way if there
is something major I find out about it before I drive a rod through
the block.

By these are just my own personal paranoias.

So, just so I understand this correctly, you throw your only son in
the truck often? On the last occasion you had that you needed to see
how long he could hold his breath he found your AK and, how shall we

the AK, and not the son, that is happily at his side.

Re: [MBZ] Insurance claim and attorneys (85 300CD)

2005-12-05 Thread Mike Canfield
Get ahold of YOUR insurance company as well. Like Mitch saidYou did not
sign a contract with THAT insurance company so you don't have to accept
thier offer. Like was said before, get a list of comparable cars with
prices...E-bay page printouts with pics are great for this. Get the OWNER
of your insurance agency in on this...He/she has more pull than the others
in the office.
The insurance companies use local classified ads to come up with the price
as the car is too old and rare to find on a dealers lot.(USUALLY) Therefore
they come up with a figure for a bunch of 300D's or 240's and such that are
much more common than your CD. They HAVE a list of the criteria/classifieds
they used for the valuation but you will have to DEMAND that they show you
how they came up with the value of the car in order to see it.
I have been through exactly this before..My 82 Volvo 240 wagon in mint
condition with lo miles was totalled by a Ford Ranger that pulled in front
of me. The insurance company used local ads to come up with a value of $500
for an 82 240 wagon. That would have been fine if mine had been the rusty
200K mile cars that they compared with. I ended up fighting with them for a
month or so and got nowhere. Went to my agency and asked to speak with the
owner...After showing him what they were trying to do he was outraged at
the fact they were trying to pay so little for such a nice car. I don't
know what he said to them but he told me not to worry that he would take
care of it. 2 weeks later I recieved a check for $2600 along with a letter
of apology.
The ONLY things that saved me were pictures I had taken of the car before
the wreck showing how nice it was and a huge list of low mileage Volvo 240's
for sale that showed fair prices.
FIGHT WITH THEM..It is the adjuster's JOB to NOT pay you any more than
they can get away with and they will ALWAYS lowball you first.

GOOD LUCK!, Mike

I'd think so. You never signed a contract giving that
insurance company the right to total your car. You might
be able to force them to pay whatever repair estimate you
can obtain or at least the lower of two competent estimates.
With you not being a customer of the insurance company, they
have zero incentive to play fair with you, so you can feel
safe in calling their first offer an insult.

Im not sure or not but I think its legal to make a "backup" copy of
something for your own use, but you cant give it to your friends. Then
again, I may be wrong on that.

A few years ago, my dad's cousin and her husband drove the Dalton Highway
to Deadhorse, Alaska...some 4,000+ miles from Kansas City in a camper. You
can drive within 3 miles of the Arctic Ocean and from there a bus takes you
to the Ocean...Prudhoe Bay to be exact. Usually about freezing even in the
summer. The Dalton Highway is mostly gravel, hard on cars (particularly
windshields and headlights), etc. Tons of articles on line and picture
galleries.

 A sample: http://gorp.away.com/gorp/activity/byway/ak_dalton.htm

Anyone interested in an "Arctic-Q"? Not really able to do this any time
soon - maybe this coming summer...or the following summer...but I have been
thinking about it and thought I would throw it out for thoughts, reactions,
ideas, etc. Could be very interesting as a multi-car caravan...we could
carry lots of tools and spare parts between several vehicles in addition to
all the other stuff - spare tires, food, water, clothes for the arctic
blasts that can come at any time, etc.

You are completely right...You can go from the US to Canada but you
BETTER have a passport or you aren't getting back in. I had a friend

Maybe someone could convince Nokian or Bridgestone to give everyone involved
a deal on a new set of snows for the trip. The advertising potential for a
trip like this could be astronomical! Chris, you may actually be able to
sell advertising to MANY different companies. If they are willing to give
people cars and such for having a banner on them then I am sure some MBZ
Dealerships would LOVE to see thier name on 20 or so classic Benz' making
the trip for a measly few hundred dollars each...Advertising is where
the money is.

AC to DC power inverters are common and cheap nowadays. Anything more than
10 cents a watt is too much for average use. You can get 750 watts or
bigger and run power drills and such. I run a 110 electric impact wrench, 4
inch grinder and many other things with mine. They have them now at most
auto parts stores and WalMart stores. Xantrex is about the best I hear.

Easy.

My parents have a 120V electric blower fireplace insert for their wood
fireplace. When the ice storm hit and they were without power for 3
days in the dead of winter, so my dad plugged the Radio Shack power
invertor into the 12V lighter in his Cadillac (with a 350 V8 of
course) and ran an extension cord into the house. Then he plugged the
fireplace insert into the cord. It didn't heat the -entire- 3500 sqft
house, but enough rooms that they could get by.

In Montreal, where power was out for weeks, they parked diesel
locomotives in the downtown streets to serve as generators for the
core buildings.

Re: [MBZ] horsepower

2005-12-09 Thread Mike Canfield
That's called cogeneration...Amazing efficiencies can be had
from a diesel engine if you capture the waste heat. Some are using a
Stirling cycle engine to convert the waste heat into mechanical energy for
generation purposes and others are< like was said, basically putting the
radiator into a plenum and blowing air over it to heat the house.

That's what I have heard as a good rule of thumb, too.

So why is Jim only using the 1/3 mechanical energy to heat his house?
He could put the radiator in the basement and capture another 3rd,
maybe combine it with a water cooled exhaust.

My Bus is really where I learned how to work on cars. A VW is perfect
for that because it's simple and easy to work on, but requires frequent
attention.

The old VW engine would give you everything if you just gave it routine

gave up mine because I lived in a metro area and felt I needed more
metal around me to protect my life.

Maybe its time now to look for another old 'dub.

I'd love to have a Ghia or a Beetle, but right now I don't have a good
place to work on cars. An old VW is a money pit if you have to pay
someone else to work on it. I gave up my Bus partly due to lack of
space to work on it, and partly because it was suffering from terminal
rust-out, thanks to having spend its entire life in Michigan. When you
start getting snow drifts *inside* a vehicle, it's pretty far gone.

Wilton,
You can pick up a 700 watt for $70 or less and then you can use it for
more than just the charger. You can run many assorted powertools with one
that size. Be carefull when you buy one thoughBe sure it is rated for
use with a battery charger. Some are not. Seems there should be some sort
of step up transformer you could use with a rectifier to go from 12VDC to
24VDC and save the energy loss in the transfer to AC and back to DC. I
don't know the specifics but someone here with an electical engineering
background should be able to whip you up a charger in no time.

That said, this is a three-prong cord, and I assume the ground prong is

Naa, just a tickle. !20V grounded through a person to the Mississippi
river will get said person's attention, but it is not generally fatal. I
knew a guy who ran a hardware store. He kept a cord with bare wires. He
would hold one wire in each hand to show people it is only a tickle. He
would regularly challenge disbelievers to take the wires in their bare

Boy oh boy, is this bum advice. The cost of that cord is inconsequential.
