Since the GMA and I were mentioned at the end of the post
below, I will make the following points.

1. Mark Lyon is a member in good standing of the Global Meteorite
Association.
2. The GMA’s responsibility only begins when a formal complaint
has been lodged against a member.

These are to be interpreted as two independently statement of facts and nothing
more.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the late reply - it's spring break, and the rocks don't find
themselves.

It's hard to disagree with common sense. Unfortunately, Mark has already made
at least a few pretty bad common sense pairing mistakes that I'm pretty sure
have put misrepresented material into circulation. Like this one
, where Mark decided that an unclassified
~CV3 was paired with another dealer's published CR2. And this one
, where Mark decided that a CV3 was paired
with what sure looks to me like an unpaired carbonaceous chondrite. More on
these meteorites below.

Mark mentioned some of our past conversations. I agree: they were pretty
crazy, but I wouldn't say it's because of anything I said. I guess it's a good
thing I saved them all, and can share them with you.

Let's get right to it.

In mid-January of 2023, I let John Humphreys know, in private, that some “Erg
Chech 003" "CR2” slices he was offering on eBay looked to be swapped with a
~CV3. John's one of the few dealers I would trust to handle an issue like that
honestly and quickly. Given the texture of the stone and its abundant CAIs, it
couldn't have been a CR2. Not possible. A photo of the material speaks for
itself : a real specimen of Erg Chech 003 is
on the right. To his credit, John immediately pulled the slices he'd listed.
I had no way of knowing it at the time, but Mark had sold John this
unclassified meteorite as the published CR2 Erg Chech 003
. Unfortunately, by the time I'd messaged John
about the problem, some amount of the ~CV3 had already been sold on by a few of
the dealers who routinely distribute Mark's material, and you can still find
some of those unclassified ~CV3 slices in circulation as CR2s / Erg Chech 003
 . Not
great.

Had I said nothing, there's no reason to think anyone else would have caught
the misrepresented material, and the rest of that ~CV3 would have been sold as
the CR2. Mark keeps telling people I'm often wrong, but...he admitted to the
problem in private and refunded John . Hm.

I would add: I don't blame John Humphreys for what happened with the fake Erg
Chech 003. It's not reasonable to expect everyone to be able to ID a
carbonaceous chondrite by sight, especially based on just a few small slices.
Someone classifying and selling new, unclassified meteorites has a greater
burden of responsibility than someone who thinks they're buying a documented
meteorite from a reputable dealer. Ultimately, Mark was the one who put those
specimens into circulation labelled as something they weren't. It should have
been safe for John to trust him.

This "Erg Chech 003" ~CV3 is also a perfect example of Mark's ‘rules for thee
but not for me.’ Mark argued in his email that Benzaki Mohamed's use of Jason
Whitcomb's NWA number was different from Taza, Jikharra 001, etc., because
Whitcomb's CK was "probably a single person classification with low total known
weight. Anyone with common sense can see that this is different from huge
finds."

Well, let's look up Erg Chech 003
 . How many tonnes is
it? It has a TKW of...just 1.1 kilograms. Oh. That's...really small. And
it's owned by...two dealers who often collaborate with each other. Not Mark.
So...not only did Mark use someone else's DCA number from a small find -- he
screwed up the pairing when doing it and put misidentified material into
circulation. ...I guess "common sense" rules only apply to everyone else. Not
Mark Lyon.

Let's turn the clock back to January 2023 for a moment. When I first notified
John about the issue with the fake Erg Chech 003, I had no idea the material
had even come from Mark. How could I? Erg Chech 003 wasn't even "his
classification." I didn't know it yet, but John had forwarded my messages to
Mark, letting him know I was the one who had raised the issue.

I'd never put two and two together before, but, after reviewing our
correspondence, it's like a

2024-03-21 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
I’m not getting in the middle of these discussions. I will simply make the
following 3 statements + 1 opinion:

1. Here is Mohamed’s exact statement: “Hi all members liste , I have a
nice carbonaceous Nwa 15758 CK6 paired ,if anyone interested please contacte
me.” Notice that he used the word “paired” making no claim it was part of the
TKW of NWA 15758.
2. This discussion about “pairing” has been going on for forever. The
Global Meteorite Association has a policy to guide transparency:
https://gmeta.org/standards/descriptive-terms/pair-pairings. Mohamed could have
use better terminology to clarify the type of pairing, but I personally did not
see his description as problematic and applauded his transparency.
3. On a related note, when a north African (or any seller) offers material
for sale that is unclassified, there is NO issue with doing so. They are under
no obligation to get material classified before trying to sell. As long as both
parties are transparent, and they agree to the terms of the transaction, there
is no injury to either party.

My opinion is that our community is sufficiently large that we cannot know
every seller, much less their intent. Most of us do repeat business with
sellers we trust, but that in no way means that all other sellers have ill
intent. Like anything transaction in life – caveat emptor.

My regards to the community,

Mendy

Jason Humboldt,

You just have to learn to tune out Jason utas. He has been doing this for
years. He isnt going to change. You should have seen some of the messages he
sent me before i blocked him. The first time I met him he went in my display
room in tucson and started complaining about me selling taza (nwa 859) because
it was his dad's classification. Then he claimed he was just using it as an
example because he thought he overheard me attacking dustin Dickens (a friend
of mine) for pairing meteorites. More recently, he made damaging accusations
about omolon specimens actually being brahin. Not caring how it affected a
Russian group who had just spent months travelling and collecting the
materials. He always thinks he is right, and he very seldom is.For the
record, you did not attack a Moroccan seller. You politely told him not to use
your classification, which was probably a single person classification with low
total known weight. Anyone with common sense can see that this is different
from huge finds like hah346 and jikhara 001 and erg chech and whatever else he
complained about. I didn't read his whole message because I have heard it all
before. Collectors want to know they are getting these, and not another
meteorite. People are not using these names to be dishonest but to accurately
describe what they are selling. It would be doing the community a disservice
not to use these names.

2023-04-12 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
This issue is not new. I’ve not read the article, but I’m willing to bet that
it does not address the fundamental problem, being that magnets are cheap and
do provide useful albeit subjective information. Of course education and
motivation are key but until someone comes up with a better alternative,
magnets will never go away. There is a small portable meter that tests for
magnetic susceptibility built as a proof of concept (shown to me by Jerome
Gattacceca), but it is presently very expensive. If its selling price can be
brought down to ~$50 through volume manufacturing, then we as a community will
start making inroads, but will still take a while and require significant
effort to train and educate.

[meteorite-list] [Ad 12/52]: Tucson ... pshaw, you don't need to go when this is available

2023-02-03 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello everyone,
1) I'm sad to say that for the first time in many years, I was not able
to attend the Tucson show. However, that has not stopped me from offering
some great deals on some great rarities. My inventory is always up to date
and specimens can be found here:
https://1drv.ms/x/s!ApwRTux0g0Lbgo1FYreSUzpYotx1Ow?e=6cooZ3. The spreadsheet
is sortable by country, type, etc. Go to top left of the list and sort on
"NEW". Happy to provide pictures on request. I am usually open to do partial
trades on nearly all specimens except for those on consignment (Chwichiya
002 - member of the new but not approved CT group).
2) I have been able to source some beautiful Ivory Coast Tektites from
a family that lives there. There are two to choose from, a massive 58.6g and
smaller 26.3g specimen. Note that the 58.6g specimen has a small area of
delamination with unknown origin. The pictures can be viewed here:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/1xnoqo7bppoaw2zjuf1fa/h?dl=0=4hbi2ts2qe
uk0mhlhf3nrgw7m. Note that Dr. Christian Koeberl, one of the top experts on
Ivory Coast tektites, has verified a specimen from the larger batch these
came from. The letter from him is available for download as well. The price
is much lower than what these would typically sell for as the family is
looking to raise some cash.
3) We had a successful GMA (Global Meteorite Association
) party at the Sky Bar in Tucson that went quite late
into the evening. Thanks to Sean Mahoney, one of our board members, for
representing. We have been growing quickly and our members are really
excited about all the benefits we offer them:
https://gmeta.org/member-only-benefits.
a. The GMA posts all its financials publicly online:
https://gmeta.org/community/quarterly-impact-newsletter
b. The GMA posts all of its rules, CoE, and even the rules governing
the board publicly here: https://gmeta.org/about
c. Our community has always wanted an inclusive environment and one
focused on serving the entire community. The GMA offers many different
levels of membership and welcomes all educators/students, scientists,
collectors and dealers. After you've had a chance to review our list of
benefits and our modern website, join us here:
https://gmeta.org/membership/join-us. All of our forms are online and
automated so we can easily review and vote on applications even during busy
times like Tucson. We even send out automatic requests to the people you
list for recommendations. Ok, you get the gist, we've made it easy.
d. There is a lot of great stuff, so make sure to read the last 2
newsletters and check out the rest of the website. We have BIG plans for the
next 6 months as well ...

[meteorite-list] Guest Lecture: Our Meteorite Community: How a Unique Symbiosis Expands our Knowledge of Meteoritics and Planetary Science

2022-07-13 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
I am honored to announce that I will be a guest lecturer this coming Sunday
for the "UCLA Meteorite Gallery Lecture Series." These lectures are always
super informative and cater to everyone who has an interest in meteorites. I
certainly hope to follow in the footsteps of those before me.

Title: Our Meteorite Community: How a Unique Symbiosis Expands our Knowledge
of Meteoritics and Planetary Science
Registration:
https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEqduyupj0vGd3S0_52FsbHTbPjYr0sZQUj
When: 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time on July 17th, 2022

Abstract: Meteorites represent one of the most unique collectables in our
solar system, and not just for their "out of this world" origins. Their
ability to be subdivided and still maintain scientific and monetary value
forms the basis of the unique symbiosis that exists between the
scientist/researcher/curator and the hunter/dealer/collector communities.
For this relationship to expand and strengthen requires not only care but
understanding as well.
This presentation will provide insights into how meteorites are brought to
market and science, the positive roles of hunters, dealers and collectors in
the advancement of science, and the motivations driving the various parties
along the chains of custody. The goal of the presentation is to increase
mutual respect and understanding by addressing complex issues impacting our
communities so that we may work more closely together.

Hello everyone,
First a quick personal update: My last advertisement to the meteorite list
was 3.5 years ago and much has happened since then. The Ouzillou's have
moved onto a ranch (10 cows, 2 chickens and 42 acres) east of Austin, TX and
I have formed a new non-profit organization called the Global Meteorite
Association (www.gmeta.org ). This new organization
is dedicated to growing the hobby of collecting meteorites, providing
outreach and education to the non-scientific community and bridging the gap
between our scientific and non-scientific communities. All are welcome and
for those interested, you can read all about it on the website. Moving on to
the meteorites ...
First and foremost, I have created an online spreadsheet that will be
updated on a regular basis:
SkyFall-PUBLIC-Inventory-Sales-List-2022MARCH.xlsx

The spreadsheet is sortable and will have prices listed for most specimens
with the goal of having prices for all. Should anyone have trouble accessing
the spreadsheet, let me know and I will email it to you. Shipping is
separate. Pictures of specimens are on request. The list of available
specimens is (very) long and does not include my tektite inventory for those
of you that are interested. As always, IF you do not find it in my
inventory, then please ask as I may be able to find it for you. Note the
second tab in the spreadsheet includes highly sought after specimens of
Winchcombe, the CM2 2021 fall in the UK
(https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/metbull.php?code=74388). These specimens
come from the Wilcock family listed in the MetBull.
I am usually open to do partial trades on nearly all specimens except for
those on consignment (Chwichiya 002 - member of the new but not approved CT
group, Winchcombe).

If you saw it break up near the horizon, any meteorites produced are 100 miles
or more away from you. For meteorites to be within a few miles of your location
you would have seen it break up directly overhead.

[meteorite-list] Survey from the Meteoritical Society

2021-07-12 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello fellow meteorite afficionados,

I am posting this email on Arya Udry's behalf (Chair of the Meteoritical
Society Membership Committee):

--
Dear member of the meteoritics and planetary science community,

For years many of you have been using the MetBull and/or reading our MaPS
(Meteoritical and Planetary Science) journal. Today, we need your help. We
are conducting a short survey to better understand the needs of the
community at large and receive feedback from existing, previous and
potential members. Please find attached the link for the members:
https://forms.gle/By8aNiSxYhyv23vA6 (no need to have a google account). If
you are not a member anymore or not yet a member, you can use:
https://forms.gle/8dU5ZXH3ZmQbJ83U6

Thank you very much for your time. Filling out this survey should only take
you a few minutes, but we hope the collective contribution of many will
allow us to better meet your expectations in our Society.

Best regards

Arya Udry and the MetSoc membership committee

[meteorite-list] LAUNCH OF GLOBAL METEORITE ASSOCIATION, INC.

2021-01-15 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Dear meteorite community,

After years being a part of and serving our community, I have gotten a
chance to meet in person and virtually collectors, dealers, hunters,
meteoriticists/researchers and collection curators from around the world.
Though we may share different goals and perspectives related to meteorites,
I believe that we all desire to grow our community, expand knowledge about
meteorites and create a strong organization that will represent our common
needs.

Today, I am happy to announce the official launch of the Global Meteorite
Association, Inc. (GMA). The GMA is a nonprofit 501c6 dedicated to serving
and bringing our community together. Many, many hours have been put into the
formation of this organization and many aspects have been guided or
suggested by you in the past. The GMA is here for you and the Board's Golden
Rule is "The Board operates for the benefit of and is accountable to the
membership, its volunteers and staff."

You can read all about the new organization in the www.gmeta.org/about and
www.gmeta.org/discover-meteorites sections, browse the home page and other
links to give you an idea the direction we are going in. Though the website
is still in early stages, we are ready to review applications for Collector
and Business memberships (we have 4 membership classes including a free
membership for kids). Also as a quick note, we have reached an agreement
with Marc Fries and will host his Galactic Analytics content on the website
(previously on FB).

After reviewing the website and its content, feel free to contact me with
ideas, suggestions and even concerns. There are many people to thank for
getting to this point and many can be found on our
gmeta.org/about/leadership page.

Please feel free to repost this message in any forum you are a member of
EXCEPT that of any competing organization. Also, the GMA does not restrict
membership in other meteorite organizations - you can become a GMA member
and still be a member is other associations. I personally encourage everyone
to be a member of the Meteoritical Society.

[meteorite-list] [AD 20/52] SkyFall Meteorites (Mendy Ouzillou) large sale

2020-12-14 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello everyone,

As before, I hope that every one of you is staying safe and healthy. In
order to enable everyone to see the list in Excel format, I have shared the
file to a DropBox folder(Click link below). No DropBox account is required
and anyone can view the file.

You will find that my sales list spans a large number of meteorites and I've
sorted them by type to make it easier to find what you want. The list is
sortable and filterable so you can easily sort by name if needed. Notable
meteorites are highlighted in light green as are a few that may have been
overlooked in the past.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Sadly we have lost another member of our ‘family’.

I am sad to report that Ryan Dillon has died as of yesterday. He was really
invested and very much passionate about meteorites and was also a truly amazing
as well as funny and super goofy friend of mine. The world is waaay less funny
without him already. I’m just so very sad.
I have not gotten all the details, but as far as I know he was found in his
yard by his neighbor and whatever it was, was sudden and appeared to be
instant. I think they suspect maybe a heart attack?!? But he was in his 40’s
so I’m just shocked by that really.
We spoke with him last week and it just seems so shocking to me. I’m still
partially in disbelief really.
He has a 10 year old daughter, Maya, that is really good friends with my
daughter, Penny. She is really sweet and so loving and caring of others.
Apparently she was present and he had her at the time but she was sleeping
because it was later at night when this happened.
I am sure we may know more later.

But I just wanted to pass it onto the meteorite community. I can assure you
that if you knew Ryan, you’re life is better for it and he brought a lot of
happiness and laughter to the meteorite world and the Gem show experience every
year.
We always shopped together and so this is just really shocking to me.

Ryan was also started and ran the TMC club - Tucson Meteorite Club that met at
Sky Bar occasionally. It was never terribly organized and like all things
Tucson, it was informal and not very serious. But that is exactly how we like
things here in Tucson. Tucsonans tend to not take themselves very seriously.

I hope we can all get together here in Tucson and maybe have a memorial service
with a party and gathering to remember the fun and funny times he brought to
this lovely little meteorite family we have.

I also wanted to say that I was texting with Mark Bowling, Jim Shorten and John
Humphries last night as soon as I heard and that is when I was informed about
of Dave Gheesling passing away too. I am just really shocked to hear about both
of these deaths on the same day. I have tried to stay off Facebook so I just
didn’t know about Dave. So I am really sad to hear about his also very
unexpected and sudden death.
I am sorry to hear about Dave and I hope Maddie is handling things as best she
can.
These two losses are so very sad and only days apart at that. This is just a
really sad moment for this meteorite community.

I don’t know what the Tucson Gem Show is going to really look like this year,
and I know they cancelled the main show and some other shows, but if there are
people that do decide to still come and set up and meet up, I really hope that
at the IMCA dinner or some other place where we are all together as a family,
we can take some time out to remember these awesome guys and do something kind
for their families.
I think it would mean a lot to Maya if she could see how well her dad was loved
by this community.

I have been a part of the meteorite community for a very long time. I have
been in IMCA as well as other clubs and organizations, such as TMC (Tucson
Meteorite Club) and COMetS - which is the Colorado Meteorite Society In fact
I joined comets when I was only 18 years old (and I am like almost 27 now (that
is a joke, I’m 45) ;) .
So I have been a part of this meteorite community MOST OF MY LIFE!!!
I am not understating this when I say that it is like a family. And I suppose
it may be that I always felt that way because my own family of origin was
lacking in many ways, but I think this is a family. To me, it is my family
anyway. I remember when I got engaged to my first husband (or was it the
second?) anyway, my boyfriends and husbands were inspected and introduced to
that whole COMetS gang, The Jensen’s, Anne, Dan Wray, and Robert and Robert,
Paul and Paul BEFORE ever even meeting my actual family.

And their opinions and thoughts often mattered MORE than my own families as
well I now have a family of my own, but the meteorite community will always
be my first family of origin
And it isn’t replaced. It is just larger and bigger now with more people to
love and more people to care about.
And (for me) IMCA dinners and Gem shows every year, are like family reunions.
And at these ‘family reunions’, we all see how we have changed from year to
year and see how our own individual families grow and change.

We all come together and talk about the newest finds and fireballs and show
off our most recent brag purchases. And we learn new things by keynote speakers
and we eat good food

Hello everyone,
My last email was about 4.5 months ago and since then much has changed in
the world and in my inventory. As before, I hope that every one of you is
staying safe and healthy. I have been staying quite busy and continue to
work on bridging the gap between scientists and collectors. Some of you have
been of great help on this project and I am very appreciative. If you’d like
to see some of what I’ve been working on you can go to:
https://www.skyfallmeteorites.com/education-research/meteorite-wiki/meteorit
ics-classification
Attached you will find my sales list spanning a large percentage of my
inventory (listed by type). The list is sortable and filterable so you can
easily sort by name if needed. Falls are highlighted in light blue. Notable
new meteorites are highlighted in light gray as are a few that may have been
overlooked in the past. Some notables:
1) Zhob, a rare classification, H3-4, fell Jan. 2020. This meteorite has
beautiful brecciation (picture attached).
2) Erg Chech 002, an ungrouped achondrite unlike anything seen in
meteoritics (picture attached).
3) Chwichiya 002,  a C3.00-ung. This meteorite is a consignment item, but
all specimens are with me.
Though many institutions are not able to trade out material, for those of
you that can, I am usually open to do so on nearly all specimens. Prices and
pictures are available by request as is the provenance.
Regards to all and enjoy the weekend!

Roberto,

Well … You are right. Unless you bought material that can be traced back to

any of the mass holders listed in the classification, then those stones are

not “Erg Chech 002” and have either been visually paired and sold improperly

under that name, visually paired and sold as visually paired, AND/OR are in

process of getting their own numbers paired by classification.

Just because a meteorite can be paired visually does not mean that it should

or can be classified as such. I would recommend reading the guidelines

(https://www.lpi.usra.edu/meteor/docs/nc-guidelines.pdf) to understand how

names and pairings are determined for falls versus dense collection area

finds. The system is not perfect and for sure needs improvements to reflect

the situation on the ground, but I believe we as a community are better off

recommending changes working with and within the MetSoc. However, doing so

means that we have to address not just our concerns but also the concerns of

the MetSoc and NomCom. In order to find common ground, we as hunters,

collectors, dealers, etc. need to understand their reasons for why the rules

are as they are. Changes forced from the outside are rarely effective.

If you want to have a more in-depth discussion, feel free to contact me off

Hey Mendy,

Thanks for your response, but if that’s true, Erg Chech 002 should have like

30 different NWA numbers. Same with 869 and Al Haggounia 001 and about a

thousand other NWAs. The Martian is unique looking enough and has a

unique-ish composition, was all found around the same time and submitted

around the same time. It’s all the same material. Just because it was sold

to a handful of dealers shouldn’t mean it’s a handful of different

meteorites (opinion).

[meteorite-list] Table of the Elements - geology and astronomy version

2020-06-28 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Well, it has taken eight months to get this project completed, but now I am
ready to share it with you all. Still a bit of work to do, but ... I think
all my professor, researcher and scientist friends will enjoy and I hope
make use of it. If you find errors, let me know.

Re: [meteorite-list] [AD 18/52] Scottsdale, AZ LL3 meteorite - slices available for sale

2020-04-14 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello fellow meteorite afficionados,

I am pleased to offer slices of the Scottsdale meteorite. This meteorite is
a fresh (W1) LL3 chondrite found my Todd Dziuk in 2017. This stone was a
single mass of 211g of which after classification 177g remained. Mark Lyon
and I partnered to purchase the stone. Mark is keeping his end-cut intact,
and I decided to make my half available to collectors as slices. Marlin Cilz
did an amazing job cutting the stone and after a bit of experimentation
applied a high polish one side as that gave the best contrast and look.
Backside is unfinished.

Slices range from 4.04g to 6.29g x $75/g (shipping separate). I created a
public Dropbox folder for you to be able to review images:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wm7lun2l5b8d6gi/AADn3tYsr9ndCNyc8i6I9mC_a?dl=0

P.S. if anyone is interested in receiving the list of items for sale from my
last "massive" sale, let me know. I'll be happy to forward that to you.
Includes some really rare irons and carbonaceous types like recently
published Chwichiya 002 a C3.00-ung meteorite.

Re: [meteorite-list] [AD 15/52]: Massive sale list of mostly rare meteorites

2019-12-28 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
I've decided to post a pretty massive list of meteorites for sale. As many
of you know I collect rare and/or unusual meteorites, and so you will find
many rare types, rare falls and many other rare meteorites are in the list.
***PM for availability, prices and pictures*** So, if you did not get the
meteorite you wanted for Christmas or Hanukkah or whenever, now is your
chance to score some true rarities.
I did not list prices to protect my wholesale buyers, but few items are less
than $500 and some are over $20K. Pictures available on demand and first
come first served. All provenance info will be given to the interested
party.

Happy to email anyone the Excel spreadsheet if they desire.

I hope the formatting below does not get screwed up.

Regards,

Mendy Ouzillou

I find it frustrating as well that many people who post on the met-list do not
sign their name. The email address often gets obscured and even when not
obscured, the email address is insufficient to identify the person.

If you are trying to sell something, please make the process easier on your

[meteorite-list] Local news story - National Moon Day

2019-07-21 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello everyone,

I was fortunate enough to have our local news station come by the house and
interview me yesterday about moon meteorites and my collection in general.
The story ran both last night during the 10pm news and this morning. I am
lucky to have had media training and so was able to set some ground rules
that allowed the segment to focus on the meteorites themselves and not their
value.

Hi Randy and all,

How about the hypothesis that such Fe-rich (?) metallic spherules (from
terrestrial origin) are formed through reduction of metallic magma by carbon
stemming from very old deposits of shales and coals, as e.g. found in Greenland
and elsewhere.

See this abstract (about DIsko Island Fe-rich deposits in Greenland) where
analyses of selected siderophile elemental ratios had demonstrated that a
meteoritic origin for the metallic iron must be excluded.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00389387

See also this series of images of metallic spheruls from other origins and
compare:

https://www.google.fr/search?q=little+natural+metallic+spherules=isch=univ=X=2ahUKEwi5jozXmcvgAhXNyKQKHWotBREQsAR6BAgGEAE=1536=792

I am not expert, just curious, as such spherules could be easily found upon
panning gold in various rivers...

Objet: [meteorite-list] Admire spherules

I just received an email from a farmer with an Admire, Kansas, snail-mail
address. He asks:

"A glass and metal laced boulder on my farm, sets on a pocket of powdered rock
that contains hundreds of spherules per teaspoon of dust. Could this boulder be
a piece of crust from the ill-fated young planet that contained the Admire
pallasite? "

And he sent a fascinating batch of photos.

[meteorite-list] [ad 13/52]: Calama 022: L6 chondrite (S1, W1) from Chile (11.1kg) ***FOR SALE***

2019-02-08 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Name: Calama 022
Classification: L6 Ordinary Chondrite meteorite (Shock = 1 and Weathering =
1)
Weight: 11.1 kg (+/- 10g)
Dimensions: 280 x 165 x 170 mm (approximate)

Pictures may be seen on eBay
(https://www.ebay.com/itm/Meteorite-L6-chondrite-S1-W1-Calama-022-from-Chile
-11-1kg/254115040361) and deals may be made outside of eBay!
The direct price (off eBay price) is $4350 (just under $0.40/g).

I am happy to announce the availability of the 11.1kg main mass of Calama
022 (and many smaller fragments). Calama 022 was found October 15, 2017
during an expedition to the desert in Antofagasta, Chile. This meteorite is
classified as an L6, S1 and weathering in listed as W1 (quite fresh!).

The main mass weighs 11.1kg (not 12kg as originally reported) and displays
subtle yet beautiful fluted regmaglypts on one side that is covered in a
very dark brown crust. The crust covers about 25% of the specimen.

The meteorite was discovered by Timur Kryachko during a foot search of a
small plateau that is difficult to access by car. The remaining fragments
were found within 7 meters of the main mass. Timur can be seen in the
attached picture holding the main mass after he was later joined by the rest
of the expedition team comprised of Mikhail Nepomiluev and Timur's brother,
Ilya Kryachko.

All the material is in my possession (USA) at this time and I am the sole
agent for this material. The specimen will come with a SkyFall Meteorites
specimen card and list Timur Kryachko as the finder.

Hello everyone. I don't post things too often for sale, so I figured I
better make this a good one!

As some of you read about in the most recent Meteorite Times,
https://www.meteorite-times.com/cais-in-fermo-an-unusual-aspect-for-ordinary
-chondrites/, The Fermo meteorite is an Italian fall from 1966 and is
classified as an H3-5. There is very very little of this material out there
and the TKW is only 10.2kg (it fell as a single stone).

The specimen for sale is a wedged, crusted partial slice weighing 12.2g and
is featured in the article. Hopefully, the attached pictures will come
through. If not, please email me and I'll be happy to resend.

The provenance will be supplied to the buyer.

Best to all!

Re: [meteorite-list] Do the meteorite police need to get involved?

2018-09-21 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Just trash rocks.

As has been discussed in great length on (I assume any and all) meteorite
forums, eBay does not care and will do nothing. I continue to occasionally
report items when I am feeling particularly quixotic, but at the end of the
day, buyers must validate their purchases. As always “caveat emptor.”

Hey folks,

Tell me folks, what kind of an iron meteorite is this?

[meteorite-list] Niger Impact Melt update - approved (but not yet published) as Tchifaddine

2018-09-21 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello Everyone. As some of you are aware, I have been working with Laurence
Garvie and the Nom Comm to get the Niger impact melt classified. After some
fits and starts and help from other dealers and collectors, the great news
is that the name is now approved (but still pending publication) as
Tchifaddine.

Notice that this approved name is not a DCA (dense collection area) number
but an actual location name. So forget Tassedet 004 (provisional name) and
start using Tchifaddine, an H-melt breccia!

After publication, Tchifaddine will be only the seventh H-melt breccias, and
certainly one of the most striking.

Re: [meteorite-list] The "definitive" collector's list of meteorites

2018-05-13 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Anne,

I did not forget Monnig, I chose to leave it and others off as there are many
famous collections. That is what the ellipsis denoted.

Glorieta Mountain is already on the list.

Not sure why you would include Belle Plaine on any list unless you specifically
collect Kansas meteorites. It's a find, not a fall and it is an L6. Huckitta is
the epitome of a weathered out Pallasite. You could certainly have the same
opinion about Wolfe Creek, but I wouldn't recommend Huckitta as a
representative pallasite specimen. I would likely recommend Haxtun for a type
collector, but no as a necessary meteorite of a "standard" collection.

I think Tafassasset is a good idea and a great example of a primitive
achondrite.

I realized I should have included Choteau, Eagle Station, Vermillion and
Springwater in the more advanced collection.

In the Famous Collections section you are forgetting the Monnig Collection.
Almost as important as Nininger.

In collection #2, I would add
Belle Plaine
Haxtun
Huckitta
Glorieta Mountain
Tafassasset

and in collection #3, I would certainly add Nakhla, the real one. Yes, it is
available (I have it) ;-)

Friends,

If only I could do this halfway ... ;-)

Many of you have provided great feedback on what specimens should and should
not be included in this list. In reading your feedback, I, like some of you,
also came to the conclusion that just one list does not make sense. To make
this list consistent, we will assume all specimens are greater than 1g, unless
in very rare instances, micros are really all that are realistically available.
The other thing I realized is that every collection should own some historic
specimens and while some are must-haves, like L'Aigle and Ensisheim, there are
many others where once the collector gets to a certain point, they should have
the education necessary to make the right decision for their own collections.
After carefully reviewing the list, I realized that like many other similar
lists I've seen, there are geographic biases.
For example, Park Forest is a must have for American collectors, but Barwell or
Crumlin is a far better choice for European collectors (even taking into
account the price differences). Finally, I decided to organize the list levels
based on availability and price. There are no post-Antarctic treaty meteorites
on this list for obvious reasons.

Note: This is not the list for type specimen collectors.

Now, from this list, how would you adjust it ...

great question about what are the "must have" meteorites as a NEW collector.
I thought this would make a great topic of discussion for the MetList as

on some of these meteorites, but what would you recommend to add or remove?

This list is 60 meteorites, I’ll filter through all responses and see where
we end up. I'm not stuck on 60, could be 50 or it could be 100. Please do
not recommend meteorites that are unobtainium. If you could explain your
choice that would be a great benefit.

Mendy, all,

The Republic of Niger and Nigeria are two different countries. Calling a
meteorite that is supposedly from Niger „Nigerian“ is certainly not helping
your cause.

Also, in my humble opinion, it is your seller‘s liability to maintain the chain
of provenance and provide you with credible location data.

Clouding find information of meteorites seems to have become a sport with
finders and middlesmen from certain countries. Dealers buying merchandise
without insisting to get at least basic find data from their suppliers
contribute to the problem.

2018-05-08 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello meteorite friends,

My last advertisement was just shy of 3 years ago, so I better make this one
of great impact!

I think most collectors are aware that nice irons are becoming increasingly
difficult to find. The good news is that I recently finalized my agreement
with the Rodman family to sell Mr. Tom Rodman's entire meteorite collection,
comprised mostly of some really nice Odessa individuals. For those of you
not aware of who Tom Rodman may be, he is the visionary who drove the
building of the original Odessa Meteor Crater Museum that opened in 1962. He
was also a Fellow and past treasurer of the Meteoritical Society as well a
consultant for Ector County, TX regarding the Odessa Meteor Crater and
Museum. If you are interested in learning more about Mr. Rodman and the
Odessa Crater, you can read an article he wrote in the Feb 2012 issue of
"Meteorite" magazine.

Specimens for sale start at about 500g and go up in weight from there. Many
of these specimens are aesthetically pleasing and the prices are very fair.
For specimens in the 500g range, prices start at $0.85/g and go down from
there for pieces over 2kg. If interested in getting access to the nicest
specimens first, email me with a general idea of the size you want and your
budget, and I will make sure you get several high quality specimens to
choose from. However, whether you are first or last, you will get a
beautiful meteorite. If you are interested in cutters, please contact me as
well. All specimens will come with a SkyFall Meteorites specimen card and if
more documentation is available, I will forward that to the buyer as well.

Shipping is separate. USA shipments will be made using USPS Priority at a
minimum and must include signature confirmation. For any shipments outside
of USA, I will ship using USPS Priority or Priority (EMS) Express. If
package is insured for full value, then I will accept responsibility for any
loss during shipping. If not insured, then buyers accepts all responsibility
for loss during shipping.

Best regards to all,

[meteorite-list] 100g to 200g Chelyabinsk individual

2018-04-23 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a 100g to 200g Chelyabinsk individual. Depending on price,
can be larger. A nicely crusted fragment is fine as long as it is FRESH. I
am on a very short timeline, so I prefer US based sellers, but open to all.

Thanks!

All-

I just had a strange occurrence on eBay which became likely fraud. I was
notified that I had sold a meteorite slice which I had listed from eBay
(normal eBay notification). This buyer has never bought from me, so I
confirmed the info via a quick internet search (she worked for an aerospace
firm, so thought nothing of it). After printing the label, the buyer
contacted me several minutes later stating she did not order anything but
received a shipment notification from eBay. After confirming who she was and
looking at her history (never a meteorite purchased in her history on eBay),
I looked at the paypal receipt. It became clear that she was hacked on eBay
and Paypal, and her email was changed from gmail.com to gmail.net. All of
her other information was correct. I did not initially notice this
discrepancy. I could only assume that the package would have been rerouted
in transit to the "hacker". The victim (phewww, not me...) stated she
immediately tried changing her passwords once th is was discovered but was
blocked from doing so, likely due to her information being changed.

Keep a close eye on your sales both ON AND OFF eBay!!!

Re: [meteorite-list] Serichi (Habaswein) stability--somewhat answered

2017-12-04 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
I will take a slightly different approach to the original question. As a
collector, what was your intent?

If you wanted to display it to enjoy the beauty of a pallasites, then
stability of the specimen is paramount. If you collect pallasites in general
and wanted to add to your collection to occasionally take out of storage to
enjoy, then curation of the specimen is paramount. I think we all realize
that any meteorite with any iron will rust, the real question is at what
rate based on your storage environment. We should also acknowledge once a
specimen has gone from the original owner to the next, it is hard to know if
your meteorite is a ruster or not because as mentioned previously, some may
have been found above ground and others suffered many years underground and
in constant contact with water with many different minerals present.

I own a large slice of Nantan that by all accounts is a known super ruster
and yet this slice only has only a light film of gun oil on it and has not
rusted one tiny bit since purchased 4 years ago. So ...

If you intended to display:
I counselled my clients to not buy Sericho until it has had its reputation
proven over a year or two. My personal feeling is that I'd rather
potentially spend a bit more later than take the chance of having a specimen
disintegrate. If you want to get in early, probably best to spend the extra
money and get the iron or in this case pallasite specimen stabilized (KD
Meteorites). If that is not an option, there is nothing wrong with adding a
layer of lacquer to minimize the effects of being in an open environment as
long as you realize that you are slowing down the effects of rust and not
stopping it. The key is making sure that the lacquer is properly applied so
as not to trap any water in the specimen.

If you want to store:
Here is my secret. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/BAN4CT/ (Lock &
Lock Airtight Rectangular Food Storage Container with Drain Tray 131.87-oz /
16.48-cup) and
https://www.desiccantpackets.com/loose-silica-gel/pounds-loose-bulk-orange-i
ndicating-silica-gel-desiccant-2-4-mm-beads-moisture-absorber-dehumidifier.h
tml (Orange Silica Gel Beads - Per Pound). The airtight containers work very
well and still provide very easy access to your specimens. Also there is a
tray that allows you to separate the desiccant on bottom and specimens on
top. From a curation standpoint and much experimentation, it is hard to beat
this system.

I hope this is helpful.

Best to all,

Sorry Andrey,

Your small/simple question got hijacked. Some people tend to do this.

I hope, that somewhere in the muddle, your questions where answered.

As you may have deduced -- there's no One answer on the stability of any
meteorite. As Anne stated, there are many variables--where/when found,
preparation etc.

So Andrey, try to research who you're buying from and also do the sideline
research on what may be the best preparation for this particular meteorite.
This can be difficult- you may want to ask this list who are the respected
preparers of meteorites and then follow up with that person.

In essence, you're almost back where you started.

>From experience--don't invest too much into any specimen until you
understand/feel comfortable with what you are trying to obtain.
Cost me - $2,000

Please Do Not hijack Andrey's question again.

If he wants to reply -- HE will .

Re: [meteorite-list] Nitol Etching Formula

2017-10-11 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
The short answer is that it depends.

Some people use the weaker 10% Nitol and others use closer to 30% Nitol (I
am pretty sure based on fuming 63-67% Nitric acid), and some use everything
in between based on the actual meteorite being etched. I use the 63-67%
Nitric acid and mix it with 99.9% methanol (acid into methanol slowly). The
acid you are considering is just diluted with water and depending on what
you are etching, should be fine. I would just increase the acid into the
alcohol and use a 90%+ alcohol.

My view is that etching is far more art than science and requires much
experimentation to get "right". Hope this helps.

I looked but can seem to find this specific info so I hope someone on here
can help.

I know the basic formula for Nitol etching solution is 90% alcohol and 10%
nitric acid.

BUT what are the strengths is this formula based on?

For instance, you can readily buy 70% and 90% alcohol at any store and
nitric acid comes in a huge variety of strengths but 63% seems to be the
most common.

The reason I ask is that I have an acquaintance that has 1/2 gallon of 50%
strength nitric acid that he would love to give to me but because he can not
easily dispose of it

BUT I need to determine the correct ratio before I accept his gift because I
am pretty sure the nitol formula uses stronger acid

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

There are so many things that scream "terrestrial" about this "lunatic" rock.
Almost, 47% glass(SiO2) and 20% of aluminum oxide!? This is likely man-made and

It is best to avoid this type of material altogether. It appears to be
another self-paired stone being offered up as a planetary piece. Most
collectors realize that without formal classification by a recognized
laboratory and name assignment by the Meteoritical Society, the material
is consider just a rock and not a meteorite. In other words, it is
worthless. Many collectors have been fooled already by the influx of these
stones and are asking for refunds after realizing, there is no secondary market
for this material.

Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA List] IMCA BoD Election 2017: Questions about Provenance for Candidates and all Members

2017-09-27 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello everyone,

First and foremost, I am a collector. As such, the provenance of my specimens
is as important to me as the specimens themselves. As stated previously, the
main focus of the IMCA is to ensure authenticity and this is an issue the IMCA
board of Directors take very seriously. So, I will respond as a collector and a
candidate for the IMCA board.

I, like Anne, also stay away from specimens whose chain of custody includes
collectors/dealers with a bad reputation. The importance of provenance and the
chain of custody have become more and more important to me over time. I have
had to learn the hard way that some mistakes made by sellers are innocent and
some mistakes are not mistakes but outright fraud. In that time and especially
during my transition into becoming a dealer, I have learned that it is just as
important to provide my and previous owners' specimen cards to ensure a
continuous chain of custody. One reason is that no laboratory will spend time
testing my Ash Creek is a NWA-look alike or the real deal. Not that the labs
can't perform the testing, just that the analysis results of one L6 are very
often difficult to distinguish from another L6. Unfortunately, not all
meteorites are as unique as Tatahouine or Gujba to make them "obvious". So,
coming back to provenance and chain of custody, this is often the only guarante
e we as collectors have that the specimen in your collection is in fact
authentic.

As my wife has (very patiently and graciously) been conducting a complete
inventory of my collection and items for sale, another issue has surfaced.
Specimens that I bought (when I first started collecting) being listed as
classified or being a certain type that later turn out to be neither. So,
always check the MetBull to make sure the item you are buying is what you think
it is. Also, never be afraid to ask your dealer whatever questions you feel are
appropriate to give you confidence in that purchase.

With our membership's feedback and board action, we can make improvements to
the Code of Ethics to provide better guidelines that help protect buyers and
sellers.

Best,

Mendy

Hi all!
I record the date of purchase, who I bought it from and any information
regarding prevuous owners along with several other bits of information on such
as the sellers descriprion of it, their IMCA member number (when possible),
the picture, declared weight, TKW, etc. for every individual meteorite in my

The recording of every bit of information is paramount! With provenance and
full documentation the value is far less than it could be! Sadly, provenance
can help "clean out" your collection should information regarding a seller
arise after a purchase.
Being handicapped, I am unable to go into the field to go meteorite hunting
myself. Having been in document control, I believe in documenting everything

If people want to use the Metlist to talk about the Metlist, please do so on
a different thread. No need to hijack mine to just vent.

If you would like to discuss the merits of this scientifically important
meteorite, then please do so and let's put this pettiness behind us.

2016-12-22 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
John,

Come on.

15MB is quite reasonable considering the number of attachments and quality of
the images. I just checked and the largest file is 1MB which is super
reasonable. If you do not wish to clutter your inbox or your computer's memory,
then just delete it. One of the reasons the list is inactive is what used to be
the inability to add images. Seems like now we can for which I am very happy.
Only reading about meteorites may be fun for some, but also seeing pictures
that are clear and sharp is way more fun for most.

Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday spent with family and friends.

Best,

Mendy

Mendy you are really reputable, a gentleman, and a great scientist, too. This
is an (uncommonly acquired) superbly prepared large full slice which must be
such a treat to see in person. Large grain size and stark contrast in the
matrix makes it a really interesting eucrite. Also high in titanium which for
me conjures images of a mining base and space-faring outpost to be built based
on Vesta one of these days Not to mention that the iron is so nickel free ...
like happened on Earth?! ;-)

I appreciate you, and all who make the effort, and bear the expense, to
classify these incredible stones and the opportunity to get MPOD thanks to kind
folks like Suzanne and Paul who make the time to brighten so many people's days.

Kindest wishes

Doug,

You are absolutely correct.

Steve Witt handled that second stone and I had not updated my records to
reflect that the classification had to be split for the two stones. Based on
visual observations, there was at the time a (small) concern that they may be
different. Final classification did prove that these were the same and thus
paired, even though 7989 is listed as a polymict eucrite and the 8588 as an
eucrite. So, my apologies to you.

To be very clear, this mixup is my fault and I will update Suzanne and other
clients as well. The website has already been updated as well to reflect the
updated information.

Thank you for the keen eye!

Your website listed the 16.7g slice coming from the stone #2 and described:

"New Eucrite: NWA 7989 a beautiful multi-colored shock melt eucrite

Stone 2: Slices for Sale at $27.50/g: (all slices expertly cut & prepared my

Steve Witt held the 1635g stone according to the Meteoritical Bulletin,
classified as NWA 8588.

TKW of NWA 7989 is only 510g.
NWA 8588 TKW is 1635g.

Re: [meteorite-list] Cut pallasite gemstones on ebay

2016-11-03 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
At best, I would say this is Libyan Desert Glass, at worst it is just
manmade glass. Either way, it is a scam and eBay won't do anything to stop
it. In order to be able to facet an over 5 carat stone, I have to imagine
that the rough would have to have been at least 10 carats (not a faceting
expert, just a guesstimate on my part). Well, then there is the part of a
flawless meteoritic olivine of that size ...

There is someone selling faceted gemstones they claim to have cut from
pallasites.  I looked through their current and past offerings, and I have
never seen such a rainbow of colors; AFAIK, olivine doesn't come in red and
blue!  Anyone know anything about this seller? or is he just trying to cash
in on meteorite lust?

Incidentally, I asked if he knew what pallasite this offering had been cut
from and he didn't know.  It's a bigger than usual chunk of peridot, for a
meteorite (if that's what it is).

Utopia. Anyways, if you have something that fits the bill, I would love to
give it as a gift to my father-in-law. Granny would get a kick out of it

Re: [meteorite-list] Possible meteorite trades

2016-07-05 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Like many of us, I have always been a collector. Rocks, fossils and minerals
were my first passion, I had a passing interest in stamps/coins as an older
child and then as a teenager collected comic books and comic book art. This
was at a time when many new alternative comic books came onto the scene like
Cerebus, Mage, Elementals, and even Teen Age Ninja Mutant Turtles. As an
adult, my wife and I began collecting art and building on the pieces created
by my father who was a master jeweler, painter and sculptor. We have really
eclectic tastes but focused on paintings, glass art and sculpture with
styles ranged from Russian impressionism to Huichol Yarn paintings, abstract
paintings to many pieces we had commissioned ourselves.

Then in the summer of 2011, I watched "Meteorite Men" and went off the deep
end for meteorites. 4 years after buying my first Sikhote Alins from Geoff
Notkin in October 2011, I decided to become a full-time meteorite dealer as
well as a full-time high tech consultant (yes, when you work for yourself
you can pursue more than one vocation full time). If finances allowed, I
would have also collected old katana swords as the craftsmanship, beauty and
Samurai ethos has always fascinated me.

Thank you Edwin for invigorating the list with a REALLY on-topic topic!

Best,

Mendy

Hi E.T. and all,

Very interesting that you collect marbles; I do not have any marbles to
trade however find it very interesting that most meteorite collectors do
have separate very unrelated collections.

Along with collecting meteorites I am a music collector. This started back
in the 60's with records (vinyl) and then migrated into CD's. I still have
most of the original vinyl collection and still search for out of print CD's
along with new music to add to the collection. The collection is diverse in
types of music however mainly focuses on blues, classic rock and jazz.

There is a link between the collections; I listen to music while either
working on new specimens, cataloging new acquisitions or viewing thin
sections!!

Very interesting hearing from others on their "non-meteorite" collections.

Best Regards,
Bob Falls

Hello to all list members,
I am reaching out to the farthest corners of the known world to appeal to
any and all collectors.
Having dealt in and collected meteorites, tektites and related books since
I was just a kid, collecting all kinds of rocks which included a few
cherished meteorites as early as the age of six, life has been blessed with
lots of treasured finds. By the age of nine my parents allowed me to go off
on summer long geology exploring science camp trips with older kids. For
three years this was how I spent my summers, digging in fossil beds and
agate beds all across the Northwest, areas that have been closed to this
sort of activity since the mid to late sixties. At age seven I joined the
Oregon Archaeological Society and at age fourteen I was given the privilege
of being a dig site foreman for a Scappoose Indian housing and burial site
before it was built into the now dismantled Trojan Nuclear Energy Power
Plant along the banks of the mighty Columbia river near my home here in
Oregon. Over time, life has changed and my interests have changed with the
exception of a few common threads. One of them being that rocks from Space
are the coolest of all rocks!
Many of you know that from 1987 until 2002 I displayed and sold meteorites,
fossils and artifacts at roughly 48 gem and mineral shows each year around
the western United States.
During those wonderful years of travel both here and abroad, I had the joy
and pleasure (and still do) of meeting collectors and seeing their amazing
collections. What I have seen and I am sure that many of you can relate to
this, is that most of us who collect rocks from Space, also collect other
things. I have seen a collection of antique surfboards, a huge collection of
ancient suits of armor, cannons, guns, diamonds, polished stone spheres,
stamps, coins (I think coins are how Michael Casper made his fortune! Good
for him!). I've seen amazing collections of fossils, minerals and gem stones
in private homes and on and on.
Long story made shorter, I stopped collecting these beloved meteorites when
I formally started selling them back in 87'. I have learned that this might
have been a huge mistake but it's the choice I felt I needed to make in
order to pay

Re: [meteorite-list] Cutting An Iron

2016-07-03 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
John,

Here is the issue: You claimed to have FOUND this meteorite on your property.

The problem is that what you have, in fact, is a Campo del Cielo. So, either
you are the victim of a hoax and someone planted that meteorite for you to
find, or you are trying to perpetuate a fraud onto our community. This
community has its flaws and conflicts, but the one thing we are united in is
ensuring that meteorites are real and that meteorites are properly represented
as what they truly are. In the few responses your received, you are looking at
probably over 100 years of experience dealing and handling meteorites. Campo
del Cielo is one of the more easily recognizable meteorites out there for
collectors and dealers. We see them by the tons, literally. Research
institutions often see such small pieces of meteorite specimens that they may
not have the experience we do in recognizing complete specimens. So you see,
PSU's Cascade Meteorite Lab is neither stupid nor complicit. Riddle solved. We
have seen this scam before and more than once. In fact, just recently one of
our members told the story of unscrupulous vendors in Morocco selling Campos as
new irons from the Sahara (this was a while ago). One famous fraud is the
Baygorria meteorite (http://imca.cc/insights/2006/IMCA-Insights03.htm).

I do not know you or your motivations, so I won’t comment on that. If you are
the victim of a hoax, find out who perpetrated it. If you are trying to scam
us, then please don’t try to argue. I’ve copied Dr. Ruzikaa who is the director
of the Cascadia Meteorite Lab so that they may be informed of the situation.
They may still decide to classify your meteorite, but at least they will have
all the information necessary to make their decision. We are a small but tight
knit community, and we call it as we see it. Some of us might seem rude and
some of us might seem helpful, but none of us will tolerate anyone trying to
perpetuate a hoax that COULD make our community look bad.

What an interesting few responses. You all certainly know a gazillion times
more about meteorites and about meteorite scams than I know. Of these things I
know almost nothing, though I do certainly appreciate that many parts (if not
all) of the internet are rife with scams. I'm sorry that you have so much
anger about it.

But I can't help but wonder why, if it is so obvious that I'm perpetrating a
scam, would the staff at PSU's Cascade Meteorite Lab, (who have had this
meteorite in hand), not voiced this concern? They actually examined the rock
in person - not just by way of a low res digital photo. Why would they have
been certain enough to have promised to move the classification of this
meteorite to the very top of their already long queue? They may be
underfunded, but they sure didn't strike me as dumb. I can't help but presume
they can ID a Campo as readily as you. Do you think they are ignorant? I
guess you can presume that I'm also being deceptive about my contact with them.

I really don't know the answer to that riddle. It is only on the basis of
their authority that I can even claim to know that this is a real meteorite. I
will call them again on Tuesday to ask their thoughts on this matter of a Campo
scams. They don't seem to mind at all for me to "waste their time".

I've never had any connection with law enforcement, although I have no idea
what you think that might imply. (Are law enforcement people often
untrustworthy?) I've always been obscure, and I will always probably BE
obscure. I'm just one of the obscure masses. So there is no "drifting back"
into obscurity needed. But I also sure don't need validation from your group..

I don't think you can find any link to me by Google search my name. But since
you apparently were curious, you can see my short and non-special biography by
going to QRZ.com and searching the call sign K7KEY. I'm obscure, but I also
have nothing to hide.

But my post here has not been fruitless. I've received a good number of very
considerate direct replies from others offering useful advice and information.

My regret now is that it appears that it would have been MUCH better to have
asked about cutting an iron meteorite in the abstract. I was foolish not to
think of this, and I now realize that the excitement of my discovery clouded my
judgement.

Happy Independence Day to all in the U.S.!

Great to see this happen. Just love it when exciting new meteorite displays
emerge and collaborations between museums, the scientific community and the
general meteorite community work out. NWA 5000 is still the most beautiful
lunar in my opinion even though in the last couple of years a large number of
others have been found...I think you have a few of them Darryl ;-)

Which brings me to the Kalahari 009 mass which has always intrigued me. Does
anyone know more detail about the story behind this meteorite...I would love to
know more, or see photos details etc...and I'm sure many more in our community
would too.

Hi,

While this is great — many congratulations! — the exhibit headline incorrectly
states that NWA 5000 is "The World's Largest Lunar Meteorite." In the exhibit
description it states that NWA 5000 is the largest lunar meteorite ever
discovered. Despite being uber-cool, NWA 5000 never held this distinction.
Discovered nearly a decade earlier, the Kalahari 009 mass is significantly
larger. In addition, there is a recent lunar which fits together as a jigsaw
which is more than twice as massive (which Tony analyzed many months ago).
Still...very nice. All the best / Darryl

Dear Meteorite Friends,

I am proud to announce the Grand Opening of a very special display in the
Peabody Museum at Yale University! My loan of the main mass of lunar
meteorite Northwest Africa 5000 (NWA 5000), combined with an ancient clay
tablet from the Yale Babylonian Collection (MLC 1880 - 'Velocity of the
Moon'), is sure to amaze and thrill the public throughout the year. In
addition to these authentic specimens, there is a full size painted replica
of NWA 5000 to compliment the display and offer a glimpse of what the uncut
mass looked like before sharing samples with the world.

I would like to thank everyone involved who helped make this special
occasion possible. Without the dedication and enthusiasm from these
professionals I would not have been able to share such a marvel of nature!

The display is scheduled to run through November 30, 2016. Please share in

[meteorite-list] [ad 5/52]: New Year's Day Announcement

2016-01-01 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
I can think of no better day than the first day of a brand new year to
announce some exciting news. In September we made a family decision to move
back to Austin, TX and I transitioned from buying and selling meteorites
part-time to now doing so full-time. I will be applying the same principles
that made me successful in semiconductor marketing and consulting to my
activities in the meteorite community as follows:

1) Any dealings will always be confidential. My clients decide what and when
they want to share.
2) Our interactions will always be respectful, truthful and transparent. I
want you to have the information you need in order to make the most educated
decision. My goal is to help members of our community achieve their goals.
Could be that a researcher needs a hard to find specimen, a collector needs
advice on how to reshape their collections, a hunter needs to sell a find, a
longtime collector needs to liquidate a collection or a newcomer needs
feedback on a purchase they are making from another source. Regardless of
the situation, I am here to help.
3) I am committed to the advancement of science. I am a native English
reviewer for the Polish meteorite journal. I also consult and provide
support and advice to academic and scientific institutions around the world.
4) I am committed to the advancement of our (a)vocation and our community. I
am the chief admin for and the creator of the Facebook page "Meteorites,
Tektites, Impactites & Ephemera" with over 800 members and proudly serve as
a board member of the International Meteorite Collectors Association and
will continue my involvement.
5) Money is important, but my reputation is worth more than any deal.

Whether you are looking for a historic specimen for your world class
collection or your first meteorite, contact me and I'll make sure you
achieve your goals.

Best wishes for 2016,

NWA 8276 L3.00 TS from me during the Berkeley MetSoc meeting and in a
very short time turned around these absolutely stunning images ...
wow!

Best regards,

Re: [meteorite-list] Early 2014 Algerian Eucrite Fall/Find?

2015-07-03 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Going through my old email and came across this one from Rob.

As I understand it this one fell on July 13. Does anyone know the
status of classification?

Best,

Mendy

 Dear list,

I understand that a few months before the Tirhert Eucrite Fall, multiple
specimens of another fresh Eucrite were found in Algeria.
Some sources speak of a possible second observed Fall.

Does anybody have more information, he or she is willing to share about this
 one?
Has it been classified? Any chance it will be registered as a Fall?

 Thanks,

Re: [meteorite-list] [Ad 8/52]: Something special for TS lovers - NWA8276 L3.00

2015-06-18 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
To all my friends in Ensisheim this weekend, I hope you will have a
blast. Unfortunately my plans fell through and I was not able to come
this year. Next year with a bit more advanced planning and I will be
there for sure.

Though I will not be there Tomasz Jakubowski will be there and he is
bringing the L3.00 TS with him as well as three very nice and very
thin specimens of NWA 8276 L3.00. Please contact him at the show to
see this material and slides - they are available for purchase.

Best regards,

Mendy

Covered and uncovered TS of NWA 8276 one of TWO, L3.00 and of the five
L or LL3.00, it is certainly the freshest of the bunch other than the
famous fall of Semarkona. Research depends on a meteorite being not
only classified but approved as well and this special meteorite is
both. Two of the slices have already been committed to be on loan to
 meteoritic institutions for study.

Tomasz (Tomek) Jakubowski will have these with him in Ensisheim (I
will unfortunately not be able to attend). For all the European
collectors you can PayPal the payment to me and pick up your slide
 from Tomasz next weekend!

 Hi Bernd, Tracy, all.

Most of my meteorite related chat now occurs via Facebook and this is
what i observe from many others too. Numerous people within our

see posting daily in the various facebook groups and forums. I know
it's not for everyone but i for one would certainly feel as if i was
missing out on the latest meteorite news and chat if I were not on
 Facebook.

I have done quite a few posts over the last year where i have
submitted the same post via various different forums and plarforms to
try and see which generated the most conversation and i have to say
Facebook won by huge margins every single time.

Hope to see you on there maybe Bernd? Your experience and knowledge
would be hugely beneficial to everyone there :-)

 Hello Tracy, Greg, List,

No, you haven't been dropped but the frequency of contributions
has dropped considerably. Interestingly, the same phenomenon on
Geoff's CSR forum and even on our German forum.

[meteorite-list] [WANTED]: El Sampal, Gan Gan Zaragoza

2015-04-21 Thread Mendy Ouzillou via Meteorite-list
Hello everyone,

I have a client looking for El Sampal, Gan Gan and Zaragoza.

El Sampal about 100g (perhaps more depending on price) and this will
be for cutting so needs to be at least 5mm thick.

Gan Gan and Zaragoza, I'll consider pieces less than 500g.

Let me know what you have available in terms of price, weight and
dimensions. I will buy and resell these myself but will need to get
approval from my buyer, so could take ~1 week to finalize.

thanks!

do not buy any from anyone. These are very controversial and some very
respected members of our community do not believe they are tektites at
all.
