2005-08-17 Thread Captain Bijou

I was in Louisiana, returning from the Memphis Film Festival. My wife,
Wilene, and I had just stopped at a roadsideeateryen route and heard
the news over the diner's outside loudspeakers.

Ironically, theday before, Snuff Garrett -- legendary record
producer, founder of The Nostalgia Merchant -- and my boss for seven years
-- and I were with Felton Jarvis, Elvis' producer at the time, who was
more than just a bit concerned about the rock roll king's health and his
unwillingness to record. I recall Felton bemoaning, "If he kicks tomorrow, we
don't have a thing in the can." He did and they didn't.

2005-08-17 Thread Joe Bonelli
Hi from Joe Bonelli.
I was in Buffalo, N.Y. My friend Johnny worked at a radio station there. His
station had just arranged to participate in presenting an Elvis concert. He
told me that morning or maybe the day before that we would have first-class
tickets.
Then when he came home agahst, he told me that Elvis had died.

One month later Maria Callas, the finest singing-actress of the twentieth
century, died.

This seller was not only deceitful; he was braindead. Who in their
right mind would fold a poster after it's been backed?
That's the part that makes me cringe the most.

well, this seller's arrogance continues. please review the prior
  postings with MOPO'S archive section.

he was grossly misleading, coy and slickin his ebay
description. he continued with hispurposeful deception in email(s)
to me prior to my placing a bid.

IT WAS NOT UNTIL I OPENED THE PACKAGETHAT ILEARNED THAT THE
POSTER WAS FOLDED AFTER, yes, after, IT WAS PAPER-BACKED.

  it is ebay item #7535331294
  here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemrd=1item=7535331294ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT(remove
  the space)

Nearly all the postings until now by respectable MOPOers and others
AFFIRM that the seller was deceitful. And for those who say that he
offered me a refund, i asked seller about shipping charges, in which he
replied: "I'll pay for the cost of the poster. I have blocked you from
bidding on my auctions in the future."

so, if i wanted to return it, it would cost me about 12.00 out-of-pocket
  because of sellers deceit.

frankly, i believe the price i paid was fair.probably even
great. (i purchased the same style one sheet from the heritage auction
about six months ago for about 550.00). but, the fact that i got a good
deal, doesn't changed the fact that seller lied. my actual bid was
hundreds of dollars more; then, i wouldve been really upset. i never
intended to return the poster, but i sought dialogue. all MOPOers should
  announce deceptions.
..now is ebay feedback time. (he already left me good
feedback...) (i received the poster 8 days after i
paid). he never once showed any concern for my
disappointment. lied, lied, lied. he is a dealer. he lied,
  lied, lied.

bad feedback should be reserved toannounce fraud, non-payers, and
  deliberate or deceitful conduct.

seller knew before i bid, that i am a collector, familiar with posters,
made the heritage auction purchase, and that my other ebay account has a 300
feedback score. and he still was deceitful.

  so, fellowcollectors, and dealers...what should
my feedback say? wait and see!

my final email to the seller:

hello alden: if you are a member of MOPO, you will know that nearly
all postings about your sale to me show that your were either incredibly stupid

am not upset about the cost. (i can always turn it around for a
profit---but, unlike you, i will be honest if i sell it.) you were
deceitful, and your attitude is horrible DO NOT

2005-08-17 Thread Susan Heim

Hey Tom.good question..I was sitting on the 405 Freeway, in
the rain (unusual for a southern California summer day), heading to Laguna Beach
with my sister. We were in separate cars. I had the music blaring and she pulled
up next to me(bumper to bumper traffic, not unusual for southern
California) and told me to turn on the news, Elvis had died. That weekend the
local radio station played non stop Elvis and we all sat around, played cards,
drank beer and toasted to the King!! We taped about 24 hours of the music
and I still pop that tape in every now and again. I was just thinking of this
the other day and couldn't believe it had been 28 years. Whew!!

Re: [MOPO] Where Were You 28 Year's Ago Today?

2005-08-17 Thread Greg Douglass

I was in Houston, Texas, backstage with the Steve Miller band getting
ready to eat after sound check when the news came to us about Elvis.
Oddly enough, I had just met Elvis' amazing guitarist James Burton two
days previously. Burton was wearing his TCB necklace that Elvis had
given him. I commented on it and said it must be great working with
Elvis Presley. Burton shook his head and said, The guy's a mess. Too
many drugs. It didn't seem possible to me at the time; wasn't Presley
the same guy who accepted an honorary drug agent badge from Nixon?
I remember watching Elvis as a kid and getting that same feeling
you got when you saw The Beatles or Hendrix for the first time, that
sense that there was something really remarkable going on. That all
dissipated when I saw him in one of those stupid jumpsuits for the first
time, and Elvis must have felt the same way deep down inside. He was a
great American tragedy.

Re: [MOPO] Why Not Consign To Grey Smith Heritage?

2005-08-17 Thread Smith, Grey - 367

JR: I realize you were discussing a
potential home-owner in this instance but to set the record straight, Heritage
charges a flat 15% seller's fee which includes everything from photography and
inclusion in our full-color catalog, insurance including the in-transit
insurance, descriptions (yes, some auction houses were known to charge for that)
and advertising in all of the major hobby publications, as well as many of the
major art and antique publications.

  Tom,

For the same reason people put up their house as "for sale
by owner" -- he doesn't want to pay 20% commission, which would be maybe
  $8,000 or more.

But what people who sell a house "by owner" soon realize is
that while this works for houses in the medium and lower-price range, it
doesn't work well for selling a very expensive house. For that you need a
high-powered broker with a sweet list of clients looking to buy pricey real
  estate.

In this case, this poster qualifies as a very expensive
house and most people are not going to feel safe bidding $35,000 to $40,000
for something like this on eBay unless it is being sold by one of the Top Dog
  venues like Bruce or Heritage.

But why are you asking us? Shouldn't you be asking Jeff this
  question?

I noticed that Jeff "Maurer" Scott once again has the last "Three
Stooges" two-reelerone sheet from his Grandfather Moe Howard's
collection of one sheets for sale on "regular" e-bay. This is the one sheet
from "Uncivil Warrior's" (Columbia 1935). My restorer the late Igor Edelman
did the fine restoration and linenbacking on this poster. It puzzles me as
to why Jeff Scott list's this one sheet on "regular" e-bay at a starting
price of $39,500.00. I do know that he did try to sell it outright to a
dealer friend of mine Also triedon regular e-bay before and it did not
sell.Any theories as to why he does not go with Grey and
Heritage? If Heritage and Grey is good enough for the Johnny Ramone
collection it should be good enough forJeff Scottand "The Three
Stooges" one sheet. Why does he notconsign? This is not going to
sell on regular e-bay. It need's to be featured in a major auction with
maximum exposure. If I had it Grey would be taking care of the entire
transaction. It certainly would not be a consignment fee that would be a
turn off would it?This is a "rare" piece that need's Heritage to
represent it. Any theories as to why Scott tries to do this on his own? The
people that see it on regular e-bay are certainly a different bunch than
those who participate in a high profile auction house's auction with money
like Heritage's.

By the way Jeff supposedlywelcomes questionsabout his
family. His Dad was producer and director Norman Maurer. But I had a
question about foreign distribution of the Columbia feature films which were
produced by Normandy Productions. This was his Dad'sproduction
company. I asked him a question about why only two of theColumbia
feature films were released in France. These would be "The Three Stooges
Meet Hercules" (1962) and "The Outlaws Is Coming" (1965). But no response. I
later found out thatthe Stooges were not popular in France.Hence
only two Frenchone panels "Grandes"on them. Yet it appears that
in Belgium they had more feature releases. Jeff (as a child) was in a couple
of the Columbia features his Dad produced. He might answer questions but
won't reply if he does not know the answer. Gee, whatever happened to "I am
not familiar with foreign distribution", "That was my Dad's area". It's
called kindness or being humble!!!

Anyway Grey you might want to contact him in the future about a
possible consigmentof this one sheet. I think it is an ideal
"rare"Curly one sheet that is worthy of being promoted in a high
profile auctionlike Heritage. Similar somewhatin
valueto the one sheet from "Men In Black" from 1934!!! I think that
two reeler won them an Oscar for best short subject. I don't think "Uncivil
Warrior's" would command that much. But it'sa "rare" Curly one sheet
just the same. It's not a Shemp or aJoe Besser!!!

Don't remember where I was when I heard the news, but I remember watching a

I agree that James Burton is an amazing guitarist. (Oddly, he also performs
on at least one Elvis Costello CD.)

I disagree about the jumpsuit period. I think Elvis' best recordings are
from the 70's (I've Lost You, The Next Step is Love, Bridge Over Troubled

Hey all,

I have quite an amuzing story about this. I was six years old and terrified
of thunderstorms. In the 70s scrolling text at the bottom of the television
usually only reserved for inclement weather. Well I was watching television
and that all too familiar (beep--beep--beep) with scrolling text started to
roll. I starting screaming and crying got under my bed because there must
have been a storm coming. My mother then explained to me who Elvis Presley
was and that he had just died. If I had taken a moment to look the window I
probably would have seen a sunny day. Anyways, I remember the exact place I
was...though a bit embarrasisng to admit it today.

[MOPO] STUCK IN A GROOVE

2005-08-17 Thread Phil Edwards Cinema Arts

Yes, and ditto Phil Edwards Cinema Arts
www.cinemarts.com
and many other long-time and professional sellers.

Collectors who limit themselves to just one of or two outlets are doing
themselves and their wallets a disservice.

It appears the media and advertising agencies aren't the only ones that
have brainwashing down to an art.

Phil

photographs are too awesome. with both sellers, you
know exactly what you get. i buy from them both with confidence.

[MOPO] Who Would Best Fill Those Well Worn Shoes?

2005-08-17 Thread Flixspix

So who could be or should be and most importantly should
not be?

Best ChoiceFor New 007 Clive
Owen
Worst Choice For New 007 Jude
Law

To reincarnate Pussy Galore seems almost redundant
butAnjeline Jolie could suck the chrome off an Envoy Denali and that's
worth something

What about a gay James Bond?
Nonot the fizzy, singing dancing (though chances these would come
naturally) straight swell of the thirties, I am talking
about a sophisticated, edgy,devastating , dangerous,
butt- wrangler in the service of her majesty The Queenany
queen.

Suggested Titles:

DoctorOk Maybe
From Russian River With Love
Thunderballs
Brownfinger (oops!out of
bounds,sorry)
You Only Shop Twice
On His Majesty's Secret Tea Service
Moonporker (well ooops again)
Live and Lets Dance
Diamonds Are For Sissies
The Man With The GoldenPrince Albert
A Kill With A Fabulous View
The Living Daylights On A Dimmer Switch
Onopussy

Re: [MOPO] Who Would Best Fill Those Well Worn Shoes?

2005-08-17 Thread Robert D. Brooks

Best choice for the new James Bond... NO ONE.

Let this horrible franchise die, like it should have 25 years ago... The
last couple movies were some of the worst pieces of crap Hollywood has ever
put out (and that's really saying something)...

Cheers,

Bob
