Re: [MSX] MSX-Audio BIOS upgrade for Music Module
Can an extra call command call music (same command as call audio) be added to make the rom very compatible for msx music and msx audio. Saves te trouble of editing basic programs. Wouldn't this make a combo with MSX-MUSIC impossible? Maybe it would be possible checking if a MSX-MUSIC device is present on system and, if true, the CALL MUSIC command check isn't performed? Just wondering... Adriano ___ MSX mailing list (msx@stack.nl) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx
Re: [MSX] MSX-Audio BIOS upgrade for Music Module
Plz, take a look at the article. Your answer was already there. ;) Oh, heh :). My Spanish, eh ;p. It's not Spanish. It's Portuguese. KonamiMan speaks Spanish and live in Spain, which is located in the Europe. Me and Fabio speakes Portuguese and live in Brazil, which is located in South America, far away from Europe. Anyway, Fabio also put an English version of his article online. You can find the link in the top of the Portuguese page. Just in case you don't find it, here's the direct link to the English text: http://www.msxpro.com/hardware/mm_upgrade/msxaudio-BIOS-EN.txt Too bad it isn’t just a matter of replacing the existing BIOS ROM... That would’ve been easy ;p. Blame the Japanese guys who made the original version. While Fabio was working on this project, we talked a bit about how to get rid of the hardware mods. The solution was not good: loosing 4KB of RAM in BASIC is too much and a lot of programs would stop working with 19K or less of free RAM. Also, due to the memory mirror needed by MSXAudio BIOS, using MSX main RAM would need a lot of BIOS rewriting, making the project much more difficult to complete. [MSX] New WILD servers for FudeBrowZer
Hi, Thanks to Sandy Pleyte, Cesar Cardoso and Daniel Caetano, now there are 3 WILD servers in the world. Also, thanks to Sandy Pleyte, the dynamic WILD server selection for FudeBrowZer will be back. I'll release an updated version of FudeBrowZer soon. BTW, I've updated UZIX FudeBrowZer page to dynamically show the available WILD servers in the world and also generate the fb.conf file automatically when downloading it. What does a WILD server need or what software is it running? What kind of connection does it need? A Linux/UNIX OS, an internet connection, a fixed IP and accepting incoming connections from port 14000. Disk space and memory usage isn't big. Just get the source at http://uzix.sourceforge.net/common/wild1.1src.zip, compile and run it (remember to send me the hostname/IP where it's running, please). Download it, put it in the /etc dir of your UZIX partition and you'll be able to surf the web again with FudeBrowZer. BTW, if someone could kindly provide a round-robin DNS server for maintaining a dynamic WILD server list, I would be glad to update FudeBrowZer. [MSX] Illusion City English texts
Hi all, I was already aware about comments about the English texts, so let me explain things in detail. Takamichi Suzukawa was responsible for translating IC texts from Japanese to English. I know he's not a native English speaker, but he's an undoubtful Japanese native speaker and his English is very good (better than most Japanese people I know). And better than this, he has a big knowdlege about MSX, MSX games, Japanese culture and the necessary patience and goodwill for such work. I was (and I am) sure that there are no one better than him to translate IC texts. That's why I contacted him for this project. I didn't touch Takamichi's English texts (except some of them just for formatting purposes) because I'm also not a native English speaker, and also because I believe he translated the texts the way they are because it's the closest to the original. Otherwise, it would be a version, not a translation. Of course, you can blame me for Portuguese texts, but I think most of you will not play IC in this language. :) So, if any of you wanna help improving the English translation, please ask Takamichi's permission first. I'll not change a single byte on Takamichi's translation without his permission. I think it's a matter of respecting his great work. If Takamichi agrees, I'll be more than happy to send the texts to the proofreader. Finally, please, please, please, if you don't have time to do such thing (believe me, it's not neither an easy or small task), if you will quit the work in 1 week or 1 month, if you will not commit to quality... do not ask to proofread the texts. Why am I saying this? Just because I know several people offer to proofread a game translation or translate it to another language, but most of them do not finish the work or even send a feedback. And it's really frustrating. That's all folks. Regards, Adriano ___ MSX mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Info page: http://lists.stack.nl/mailman/listinfo/msx

Re: [MSX] MSX ethernet?
I was thinking about EtherJet (or whatever is the name) LAN printer servers. Those devices have a parralel port on one end and a RJ-45 hook-up to your 10/100MBit ethernet network. They contain circuitry and firmware to handle TCP/IP. I think it is possible to hook up one of those devices to MSX printer port and ethernet. With the right software it could be the cheapest and most reliable solution. No... MSX parallel port is 8 bits output, but only 1 bit input. Better getting those serial-to-ethernet devices. But they costs a lot... Re: [MSX] communication between msx tux
In Erix I use default/MSX/ANSI as terminal parameters, and I use 115200-8N1 as interface parameters in every com program mentioned. Try 19200-8N1 first (115kbps is suitable only for TR in R800 mode, or you will loose data when sending from PC to MSX). Also, check if you enabled RTS/CTS, because Erix Fossil Driver uses these control lines. With Z80 3.5MHz I got a maximum of 33k6bps on UZIX with Sunrise RS232. Greater speeds causes data loss. Re: X-Wind page
Eric, Cool. Too bad the download link doesn't work :-( Ops... You're right... I'll fix it tonight. Why did you choose screen 6? As I put in the page: it's fast, it has big resolution and it has low memory needs. SCR7 needs too much VRAM memory and is slower than SCR6 when plotting points. And as for next X-Wind application: an image viewer. There is much things to do on X-Wind before the next application... If X- Wind survives... Re: X-Wind page
BTW, if anyone would try to create a *real* graphical shell (not just a program launcher), I mean... an entire graphical environment, with standard libraries for input, windows, system resources and so on, Screen 6 is the natural choice. Not at all. If such a library would be created it should be hardware independant Shevek, remember we're talking about MSX. It's nonsense talking about hardware independent GUI on MSX. Making such abstraction layers will cause your GUI to be slower due to the great overhead. The implementation may start as screen 6 only, but it should be no problem to port it to screen 5, 7 and 8 (and higher for 2+). SCR5 and 8 are useless for a GUI. 256x192 isn't practical for a GUI. SCR7/10/11/12 needs too much memory. For example, SCR6 needs 27.5Kb for an entire 512x212 screen. SCR7 needs 54kb. And you know that a GUI is, by nature, a big memory consumer. Also, if things are slow in SCR6 (where you can plot 4 pixels with a single byte), they will be even slower in SCR7 (where you plot only 2 pixels with a byte - SCR8 is even worse). It would be really bad if you write an image viewer and it can only be used in screen 6. Sure. But MSX has limitations and they must be workarounded. In this case, I think that allowing a GUI application to change temporarily the screen mode to show a picture in full screen is the best solution. Re: UZIX telnet experiment
Hi, folks. Since now I have a power beta tester for UZIX, Tristan, and now that all of you know that UZIX rulez a lot, I feel compelled to make things better on UZIX. I'll check carefully the bugs reported about telnet daemon and try to fix them. Most of them are caused because I didn't test telnetd under Windows, but only under Linux, and it worked fine (no, Shevek, I didn't test ed or cat). These are just some points which I think should be fixed. But I want to say again this is very great, it feels like a real (be it a bit slow) unix machine (even more because it's MSX and unices have something with names ending on X ;-) ) If Tristan had a TR and 56kbps serial connection, things would be faster. Re: MSX running UZIX webserver
Alas, it went down within a few hours. httpd only printing '+' repeatedly on console.. Reboot fixed this for now. '+' signs are the secret signal for 'fudeba, i am out of memory!'. :P Too much broken connections in a short period of time causes this. I must get a better way of dealing with this problem... Adriano: Also due to reasons beyond my comprehension, sometimes it fails to send either one of the pictures included in the page. It seems httpd misses either one of the get requests the browser sends.. Maybe the browser sends multiple requests at the same time? Can the http protocol distinguish between single and multithreaded webservers? I also noted this behaviour. I think that this is a client fault. I read the entire HTTP RFC (don't remember the number now) and the version HTTP/1.0 and option Connection: close should be enough for client making just ONE connection at a time. At home, Netscape 4.75 worked fine, but Mozilla 0.99 not. Seems that most browsers assume a multithreaded webservers. Maybe I understood the RFC wrongly? Anybody knows more about this subject? Re: MSX running UZIX webserver
Yet still, if to many people start trying to connect/reconnect, I think your UZIX webserver or perhaps the IP stack will very easially run out of memory? This is a big problem, because MSX connection is slow. So, people enter the URL and wait for 30s. If they don't see anything on screen, they click the reload button. Connection is closed and a new one is opened. But the old connection don't simply die. It must wait until the TIME_WAIT timeout expires. Well, click the reload button two times and you'll get four sockets open. This is the current limit of UZIX TCP/IP (due to memory restrictions). Next version of UZIX (0.2.2) will have a much better memory handling routines, so TCP/IP can allocate even 4Mb of RAM to it :P. This will solve any problem related to miss of free memory (of course, if the MSX has enough phisical memory). UZIX is dead
Hi, After thinking a lot about it, I decided to kill UZIX. After many crashes of that stupid Linux OS I'm using on my PC, I realized that I don't want it happening on my MSX. So, I'll quit UZIX development and will start another OS for our beloved MSX. I'll put my efforts on a beautiful GUI, nice animation effects and strong user interference avoidance. In other words, I'll start a new operating system called Windows msXP. And to ensure its easy development and performance, I'll write it in pure MSX BASIC. Re: Z8530
I don't know this chip, but I know serial lines in general. Hardware handshake is usually not switched on by default. If you have XON/XOFF handshake, you should send a ^S to stop the data and a ^Q to restart it. I'm not using XON/XOFF. By the way: To be sure, you can just measure the voltage on the pins. The pinout is on several places, among which is the text-terminal-HOWTO for linux. Hum... Ok, I'll try it. But first I need to buy batteries for my voltmeter. :) I hope UZIX doesn't crash from the buffer overrun? It probably will. But buffer is in high memory area, just before MSX system variables. A big buffer overrun will trash system vars and hangs MSX. It should just drop the data I'd say. If you have TCP connections, that should not be a problem at all. I don't like this approach. With Sunrise IDE, when the buffer is full, I clear the DTR signal and the other host stop sending bits until the buffer has some space available (when the DTR signal raises again). I don't loose data and eveything goes fine. = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! Re: Z8530
Well, of course you should do that as well. But if it gets ignored and you receive data anyway, then this data should not overwrite anything important. In the linux kernel this aproach would generate an oops, which is considered pretty bad. It's obvious. But remember that MSX has no memory protection. Ignoring data if buffer is full is my last option. If I can't make Z8530 understand the DTR signal, I'll do it. = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! Re: Z8530
The point is that it is not the Z8530 which has to react. The other computer can just ignore the signal if it feels like it. It doesn't ignore. We're talking about standard RS232C. Anyway, this approach really works with Sunrise IDE, so it should work with Z8530 too. This should in no case cause data corruption. The fact MSX does not have memory protection and can therefor not be really secure, doesn't mean you shouldn't implement any other checks. Again, this check works very fine with Sunrise IDE. No data corruption, no bytes lost. So, I would like to make it works also with Z8530. You should try to follow the protocol. It's a RS232C driver, so I follow the RS232C protocol. I can't tie it to the PPP or SLIP or TCP protocol, because the RS232C driver don't know about it. It's the classical OSI layer approach. The script Eric sent me (and that is available at UZIX site) *IS* UZIX targeted. = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! Re: New UZIX-targeted HTC compiler script for Linux
Actually, the script is not targeted at all :-) I would like to know what the exact differences are between the UZIX version of the HiTech C package and the original... Adriano? Just library, header files and CRT0.OBJ (which is C0U.OBJ in UZIX). = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! New UZIX-targeted HTC compiler script for Linux
Hi, Eric Boon and Manuel Bilderbeek made a new script to compile UZIX programs under Linux. This script has the advantage of using subdirectories; and you don't need to put everything in a single directory to compile anymore. It's very useful. The new script is, as allways, at http://uzix.sf.net; Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz Who? Re: Regular expressions
Just for fun, I'm wandering how a regular expressions parser could be implemented on MSX. Is there somewhere the source code of such a parser for any OS, in any language, available? Or at least some guidelines about how to develop it. UZIX has regexp in libc. Get the sources from UZIX site (uzix.sf.net). = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! Re: Snatcher: The Translation
Nestor, I hope I have no more bad surprises such as the keyboard (I had to use a uncommon and not-very-standard solution, but it seems to work everywhere), but if there are new surprises, I'll fight with them and defeat them. Re: Snatcher: The Translation
This is how the mistery was solved. In fact, the big trouble was in finding a BIOS procedure that was able to ready the keyboard with the IRQ disabled... and more: a procedure that should be in the same place on every computer. These procedures are 0d12h, which reads the keyboard and fill a keymatrix structure and 0d4eh, which translates this structure into a ASCII number on the keybuffer. Undocumented? Quoting from the MSX Red Book (which is on FUNet): Don't trust in all BIOS entry-points stated in MSX RB. Many of them changes from ROM to ROM. They're not guaranteed to be at the same place. They can change, specially from MSX1-MSX2, MSX2-MSX2+, MSX2+-TR. = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! http://soulmatrix.dynodns.net/snatcher/ If I've understood correctly the game now requires 144 Kb of RAM and it could reach the minimum requirements of 256 or 512 Kb of RAM. Right. I hope that external memory mappers will be supported otherwise a lot of users will not have the chance to play the game on their real MSXes. Sure. Daniel will try to workaround the high requirements. But it's understandable that japanese-other language requires more space for the texts, so the game requirements will increase. = Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz ___ Yahoo! Re: just, want to know if I receive mail from the mailinglist.
Are all the active MSX users going to celebrate carnaval? carnaval? what's that? :) The english word is carnival. Carnaval is the portuguese word. It's a brazilian holiday, where everybody goes party, dancing samba, drinking beer, having fun, etc. Programmers like carnival because it's the best time to stay at home programming. :) Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz Who? the MSX page updated
Hi, Finally I updated my MSX page. I think many of you would find specially interesting the (updated) section MSX projects in Brazil, that includes information (in english) about current projects of Ademir Carchano. Also, some new programs were added to the software section. Regards, Adriano Camargo Rodrigues da Cunha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) http://www.adrpage.cjb.net MSX: more fun per less MHz Who?
