Yes, also with FM (YM2413), built-in 256 Kb Mapper and a socket where you can put an old 30-pin PC memory card of 1, 2 or 4 Mb. Outputs: RGB and Cvideo Another nice thing is that the MSX opening is the same of Turbo-R... AFAIK, you can only buy the PCB and you have to put it in a casing yourself. Unfortunatelly, yes. The Expert3 PCB was designed to be put inside the (nice) Expert case. It's easy to find an 'complete' MSX Expert with box and manuals. They cost US$ 20 or 30... Re: [MSX] New MSX hardware
Hi, I don't believe anybody living out of Brazil has the Expert2+Turbo or the Expert3... It would be necessary to do minor changes in circuit (XTAL ?) and ROM to match European video standards (NTSC, PAL-N, PAL-G ?), but Ademir can do it. He changed Turbo-Rs and another Japanese and European MSX machines to work perfectly with brazilian PAL-M TV's. Here we use PAL-M and 60 Hz... I strongly recommend it, but unfortunately, I don't know if Ademir still has PCBs to sell, and in the case of not, if he will make new PCBs soon. We will get these answers in Jau' meeting. I have two in perfect operation. One since 1998 and one I bought in the beggining of this year. And last year I bought one empty PCB to assembly the parts by myself, but I did'nt finished yet... Tony Bedford wrote: There are some, built in Brasil by Ademir Carchano. Check out his page: http://www.carchano.com.br/ This sounds exactly what I need. A question for monitor experts...
Hi folks, According to this table/homepage: http://www.epanorama.net/documents/pc/pc_graphics.html The horizontal frequency of EGA is 21.85 Khz. Do you know if the EGA monitor could be used as a CGA monitor ? If it can synchronize at 15.75 Khz ? Have you seen any like this ? I know the pinout of the CGA is different of EGA, because we have 2 bits for EGA, but I am wondering if we could simply tie the 2 bits of each colour together and thus have one bit for each colour. Then the problem would be only the horizontal frequency. Thanks Werner Kai -- For info, see http://www.stack.nl/~wynke/MSX/listinfo.html

So help, please. And help us to help ASCII too. Ascii's rumours about 'new MSX'...
Hi, Although Javi and Nestor say that is not just a rumour, we must consider it as a rumour unless we get news directly from ASCII, or we can read at the ASCII homepage: "We will make new MSX MACHINE". You know (or at least should know) most of Japanese people (like the American-USA people) don't mind about what is happening out of their countries. They think and they do the things exclusively for themselves (Turbo-R). Anime and Manga could rule the comicz world if the Japanese companies just thought producing/selling it also in English and Spanish. Japanese MSX users even don't read/write in english... How many MSXes were produced in Japan ? 4 or 5 million ? The amount of MSXes produced/sold outsite the Japan is less than 10% of the total amount of MSXes in the world. So we really are not business for them. What the Japanese market needs/wants ? Maybe SEGA or even Panasonic wants a new console to beat N64/PSX, or even kill SNES that is still beind sold... In Japan electronic gadgets are really cheap, they have money, and they buy anything new, just because is new... I can't talk for Europe, but what WE need here in Brazil ? We need a home computer with FDD standard. HD, CD, color InkJet printer and Internet capabilities, small, that can be used with TV or monitor, and with all software in Portuguese, costing the same as a 20" TV set or VCR what is equal to +/- 250 US$. Is it possible today ? YES. The problem here is not 'to compete' with PC. The problem is that Brazilian people don't have enough money to buy a PC. Neverthless, we have a BIG and always growing market. That's why PC hardware, software and Internet companies are so concerned with Brazil. What I think and I'm very afraid of ? ASCII wants to make a new console or computer that can perfectly emulate an old MSX. So this way getting the advantage of lots of old good games and applications already made. If they succeed in this step (making an emulator), they probably will not invest any money/time in a 'new MSX'. Just think, to the market's requirements today, even the MSX Turbo-R is not good enough. Turbo-R would not sell if it were re-released today... But God knows how I want to be completely wrong about this, and maybe ASCII really wants to make a new powerful MSX MACHINE, with extended capabilities and a reverse compatibility mode with old MSX standards... ASCII must realize that Japanese people are NOT good in creating new things. Japanese are good in making things cheaper, smaller, faster... But see... they could have made a thing like Joynet years before us, but they made ninja tap extended... They never thought in direct acess to VRAM... They never used DMA and NMI capabilities of Z80... If they really wants to make a new MSX MACHINE, it will be a great big great mistake if people like Ademir Carchano, Adriano Cunha, Ricardo Bittencourt, Leonardo Padial, Leonard Oliveira, Nestor Soriano, Daniel Zorita, Manuel Pazos, Henrik Gilvad, Cas Cremers, Maarten ter Huurne, Sunrise and other great MSX users were not asked or even employed in the project. Re: Martos
Hi, You just can't blame software piracy of any kind for killing the MSX world. If software piracy could destroy a standard, surely I wouldn't be using a PC with M$ software... I have been using these @#$@%# PC-like machines for 10 years, and NEVER gave one buck to IBM, M$, Borland, or any else PC software company. You must realize that the Japanese aren't like the Americans, for example. When the Americans do some thing, they do it already thinking in how to sell that thing and how to dominate the market selling that thing. It seems that the Japanese companies made/want the MSX only for Japanese users and for the Japanese market. I am sure that the Japanese software companies never knew that were 400.000 MSX machines here in Brazil, and another hundred thousands in Europe... and even they knew, they wouldn't care at all... You must remember that 15 years ago...: 1 - A MSX machine was too cheap. Disk drives and printers were extremely expensive when compared with the CPU. 2 - Electronic parts (Chips) and RAM were too expensive too. A fast MSX with a comfortable amount of RAM (640 Kb ?) to run great applications would make the MSX too expensive. 3 - There were too many companies selling MSX, so the market was too much divided, and it may seemed to all companies that selling MSXes was not a good business. 4 - MSX was intended to be a HOME computer... Maybe his own creators never saw the possibilities we still see for MSX today... There was no HD or easy/cheap HD interface for MSX, and RS-232 was not 'standard'. Joystick ports though, were standard... Here in Brazil we never had original MSX software being sold in shops. The only ones I saw, came here travelling inside bags hidden among clothes... Re: DISK.ROM Influence?
Ðiogo Sperb Schneider gravada: You just made me remember about something I've been thinking... Is there somebody writing all this stuff we discover? It should be documented that the DDX disk interfaces look for DDXDOS.SYS and COMANDO.COM instead of MSXDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM now that I painfully found about that. :) This is not 100% correct. I have DDX, DMX, Sharp, CDX-2 and CIEL disk drive interfaces and I use all of them with MSXDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM Here in Brazil we had DDXDOS, SOLXDOS, HB-DOS, TPXDOS, COBRADOS, and some other rips of MSXDOS. If you format a disk with DDXDOS, then it modifies the bootsector to search for DDXDOS.SYS and COMANDO.COM in the directory... But the change is in the BOOTSECTOR and not in the diskrom Interface. As I said I have several REAL MSX disk drive interfaces and all of them boot normally with MSXDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM []s Werner MSX Mailinglist. Pierre Hi, Take a look on these pictures: http://mercury.spaceports.com/~coreclub/pic/tjau98f.jpg http://mercury.spaceports.com/~coreclub/pic/tjau98h.jpg http://mercury.spaceports.com/~coreclub/pic/tjau98l.jpg http://mercury.spaceports.com/~coreclub/pic/tjau98n.jpg In them, you can see a Samsung CGA Color monitor in a Turbo-R GT. I just made a circuit to convert MSX RGB signals (1 Vpp) to 6~14 VDC level needed to the biasing of the base of the R-G-B transistors, and a synchronism separator to split MSX composite sync signal (1 Vpp) into VSync and Hsync (TTL levels) needed by the CGA monitor. If you hava R, G, B and Composite Sync signals in the SCART connector, you can use a CGA monitor just splitting V and H sync and converting the signal levels. If you have H and V sync already independent, then is more easy ! But if you have only Composite Video output, then you need a Chip ( I can't remember his code, is a LM made by Philips) that can convert this signta in R,G, B, and V-H Sync signals. And about an Amiga color monitor, YES, The Brazilian MSX Users Ricardo Jurczyk Pinheiro and Daniel Jorge Caetano use their MSXes with Amiga Commodore monitors, but I don't know the monitor inputs... Handheld MSX and other things...
Coen van der Geest wrote: Hi there, is it possible with current technologies to engeneer a handheld MSX computer? Just for private use (hobby), not commercially. Grtz Coen YES ! At the last meeting in Brazil (MSX RIO 99) Ademir Carchano showed a small PCI board with an Altera PLD, an EPROM chip and a RAM chip. The PLD was programmed with an almost complete MSX circuit, less the PSG and VDP. The board has also a MSX slot and the switched power supply. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture of this board. But somebody here may have one. I will ask for it. He made it for use in industrial control (a cheap PLC based on MSX...). We talked a lot about the possibility of 'programing' the PSG and VDP in the PLD. He said that it is possible, but I think he don't want to work more on it, because he doesn't like the limitations of MSX VDPs... And he thinks that nobody would buy it. :-( You know we can get an RGB LCD monitor from some types of cameras and pocket TVs... We showed one small color LCD monitor at Jau'98+ meeting, adapted by Ricardo Suzuki. See its pictures at: http://mercury.spaceports.com/~coreclub/pic/jau98pm.jpg http://mercury.spaceports.com/~coreclub/pic/jau98pe.jpg I don't know if the laptops' LCD monitors and circuit are independent of the main board circuit. If we could get an CGA/VGA/SVGA LCD monitor, it would be easy to connect it to MSX through an RGB-xGA converter. The new Ademir's board can be placed confortably in a laptop case. We just need a battery, an MSX FDD interface and a laptop FDD, like the one I have here, but mine is external. I made the cable for connect 26-pin laptop FDD to MSX 34-pin FDD interfaces. I also did convert a SAMSUNG CGA COLOR monitor to accept MSX RGB. Jose Rafanelli uses it with his GT. Re: games and many questions...
I wanna know too if someone have the game Mon mon Munsters (or something like that). I would appreciate if the game is in .ROM or .DSK formats. But binaries serve too, since it's possible to transform them into .ROM. I have it in binary format, but I don't know if it's easy to make a '.ROM' of it. Some games are hard to convert because they have weird bank switchings and features. sorry, this is a question, when you mean binaries, what kind of format are you referring to? .bin .bas ? and how can you transform then into .rom?? Is there any program out there? which? where? :) The binary format is the game cracked in several 8Kb or 16Kb parts to be loaded in the Megaram or Memory Mapper. There is not a special soft for this (as far as I know). You have to join all the parts of the game, without the binary headers. But is always better to search for someone who have the original cartridge, to get a 100% certified good copy of the original ROM. Someone knows where I can find the game based in the movie "The Name of the Rose"?? And the newest MSX games? I only find in the WWW old ones, in sites like Komkon. At Funet FTP there is a version of 'La Abadia del Crimen' (ABADIA.LZH), but it's corrupted and without the ending of the game (due to a bad conversion from tape to disk). My brother is working in a new cracked version that allows you to: 1- see the opening of the game 2 -play the game 3 - see the ending of the game 4 - save/load game to disk The current not-finished version of it was presented at Sao Paulo MSX meeting (Brazil - 20/09/97). Soon it will be at Funet FTP for you all. But it seems that nobody cares about MSX 1 games :-( where is the MSX spirit ? Those games that people talk in the mailing list, like Onyx and "Deus...etc (I don't remember the name right now) are for Turbo R? If not, where I can find them? I sent 'Deus Ex Machina' to Funet this week, but I really don't know if it's complete or if it's 100% good. Anyway it's a weird game... Maybe a Spanish user can send a 100% certified copy to Funet. Does anybody knows if Is this game at CD XTORY I or II ? MSX game by a Spanish company called Opera or Topo (i'm not positive but Opera Soft (by the way, where are these guys, and another old MSX programmers ?) belongs to the 3D category, so now you know how it will look like on the screen. Re:
Hello MSX freaks! Anybody have game called "The Great Giana Sisters" ? Please, send me this game or upload in Funet... Thanks. Hello, Unfortunately I don't have that game you are looking for, but I would like to ask you something. Some time ago (2 years), Egor Vosnessenski gave me your address because I was looking for MSX clubs still working in Russia. He said me that your was the last one. I make a diskmagazine in Portuguese called MSXMIX, and then would be so nice if you could write an artcile telling about MSX past n Russia, what kind of MSX you have, and about the nowadays situation of MSX and MSX users and clubs. The MSX situation in Russia is very interesting because I know that your government started to buy MSX with educational purposes. And as I don't know how the things really are in Russia (USSR is so big...) I keep thinking about some points: 1 - Before Perestroika, people could buy MSX ? (here in Brazil we could'nt buy imported MSX until 1989, when the 'market reserve' and many protections for our industry were removed). And now ? 2 - MSX is still used in Schools, industry and oficces ? Or Russia was also invaded by PC ? (like Brazil, where MSX is now just like a hobby). 3 - Was really a MSX in the Mir Space Station ? In a Brazilian magazine called 'MSX Viper' the writer told that an astronaut went to the Mir with your MSX. May the astronauts bring things like MSX computers to the space ? Are there MSX still working in the Mir control or another Russian important research/space/military projects ? I also collect MSX software, then I would be very pleased if we could trade old MSX1 games and demos. Egor send me 2 demos called 'The miner demo' and 'Lshit', then I adapted them to run in every MSX machine (because they use some RST38H to jump to RAM in slot 3), but I would like to have more. I can send you Brazilian old an PD software too. If you want, I can write a overall MSX situation in Brazil article, specially for you and MSX Russian users.
