Thanks Mike! That's beauty of MLO. There's so much there. It's like a
sandbox where you can build whatever you want.

Re: [MLO] Pictures of how you use MLO effectively

2017-04-10 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi Mike:

What you see below is the tip of my iceberg. What it does not include,
which I may screen grab at some later point are dozens of checklists I use
for projects I do with many moving pieces.

USE AUTOMATIC FORMATTING:

Notice that I use Automatic Formatting quite a bit. Automatic Formatting
changes the appearance of your tasks based on context and other variables.
That makes things stand out.

Just everything thing I do eventually winds up in a mindmap called
Simplemind. But the hierarchy is similar to the screen grab above.

IF YOU PROCRASTINATE HERE'S WHAT WORKS FOR ME:

Maybe this is a little off-topic, but it is integrated into my MLO usage. I
have found, over the years, that it doesn't matter how fancy I get. I used
to use roles, priorities, effort and urgency. The truth is that I spend
more time maintaining the structure than actually getting important things
done.

Where I'm getting the most traction has been:

1) Realizing that a mere list of tasks and projects does nothing to
motivate me to get them done.
2) What motivates me are things that I want in the here and now.

So in MLO, I have a list of things that motivate me.

So, I use MLO and Simplemind to structure my flow of work as follows:

1) Prioritize tasks and projects
2) Group them in bite-sized chunks
3) Make a list of little things that you can reward yourself with.

I will take a 24 oz of vanilla flavored coffee in a thermos and take one
big sip. I will place it on the other side of the room. Then, I will not
take another sip until a accomplish the set of tasks. The I'll do another
set, using perhaps some other motivation.

There's a lot more to than that. But that gives you the gist.

It's a big paradox. Most motivational experts tell you that the key to
success is delayed gratification. But really, it can be used to way of
tricking yourself into getting things done.

I know this will sound stupid to a lot of people. But this is the only
approach that consistently enables me to step away from my computer at the
end my work day patting myself on the back.

Re: [MLO] Two users, two iPhones and two cloud sync?

2017-04-06 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi:

Well, it's easier for me to conceptualize this if you also own the PC
version. If that were the case, both of you would be able to access it.
Both of you would have your email addresses registered to Cloud sync.

Secondly, when you refer to iCloud Sync, I'm assuming you mean MLO's cloud
sync.

Once you have the above set up, I think you could both sync your phones to
that one desktop MLO.

The reason I think the above is feasible is that I have both my iPhone and
Android Tablet synced in that manner.

Hope that helps,
Eddie

[MLO] POLL: How many of you would like Rapid Task Entry to store frequently used targets in MLO?

2017-03-21 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
While I used Rapid Task Entry (RTE) to send things to my Inbox, I also use
to insert tasks into other areas of MLO.

Every time I switch to a different location, I have to type in keywords
which I get right 90% of the time. But still, this is more clunky than it
should be.

Far better would be if I could simply store, several frequently used
locations in RTE so that I am "rapidly" (pun intended) getting the task
where it supposed to go in milliseconds rather than seconds.

I have already made this request via the Facebook page for new suggestions.
But I'd like to see if there are others of you who like this idea enough to
rally behind it so that maybe it's prioritized a bit for future
implementation.

I realize that MLO does not revolve around my personal needs. So if
nobody's interested, I'm happy to wait longer. But if you're a fan of RTE,
I would think you'd like this features.

Thanks,
Eddie

Re: [MLO] Using Siri to Add Reminders to MLO

2017-01-24 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi, I'd be very curious about whether there's a practical way to add due
dates, context etc,

*Here's an update on what I'm doing:*

I currently use "Hey Siri" to send a task to MLO via email. I say, "Hey
Siri, email to ." And then I tell Siri what I want to say.

But MLO is not able to parse via email. It's not that big of a problem,
though as I just go in there later and add parameters later on.

Most of the time, if I have a routine task such as, "remind me to charge my
Fitbit at 2:00 PM, I route it by default to an app called "Alarmed!" and it
parses it. Nothing more needs to be done. I prefer this approach for
trivial tasks.

But for most work-related tasks, I either have Siri send an email to MLO or
I text or voice it into my "Drafts" app. Then when I get back to my desk,
I go into MLO and just prioritize, add reminders, etc.

Thanks,
Eddie

Re: [MLO] Re: Why is MLO Cloud Sync paid?

I have a iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Air, and Asus Android Tablet. There is
absolutely no decent task/project app I've seen that syncs across these

I think it is well worth it to pay for cloud service so that they can
continue to maintain it and continue to come up with future enhancements.

2016-11-24 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Rene,

Yes that clarifies and I totally agree with you. It would be nice to be
able to perform multiple functions by hard pressing the mlo icon without
even entering the app.

Re: [MLO] Re: Hotkey question for MLO old-timers for "Insert task above current selected task"

2016-11-24 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
 Hi John.

Maybe I didn't understand your approach. When you say:

"Try
left arrow, (moves focus to parent, and then)
Alt+Insert (creates a child immediately under the parent"

It appears that you are inserting a sub item.

In my scenario, you have a bunch a list of items. You want insert an item
above the top item with minimal steps.

It doesn't seem like we're talking about the same thing.

Hi, guys...this morning, well over a year after I posed this question:

*"Let's say that I have a task that is currently selected. What is the
hotkey command that creates a task above it?"*

...I stumbled onto the solution.

1) Click any object on MLO, other than a task. For example, you click the

2) Focus goes away from the tasks.
3) Now when hit the "Insert" key, the next task is creative at the very top

Re: [MLO] Re: Feature Request: MLO on IOS, Quick Action for Add Inbox Item

2016-11-17 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi, I've been a user of the full iOS version for quite a while.

Regarding your question about quickly add something to the inbox, I thought
that's what the blue button at the bottom of the "home page" that says "Add
to inbox" is all about.

Let me know if you're talking about something else.

Regarding 3d Touch...when you mentioned it..I was looked for any reference
to it in most up to date documentation. Couldn't find anything. Can you let
me know what features of MLO for iOS now use 3d touch?

Thanks!

Hi Nick:

I figured it out. Desperate for a solution, I started tapping all over the
screen that comes up when you select sync. One of those taps triggered the
sync setup page and I was easily able to set up sync after that.

The place where you tap is not all that intuitive. They should make look
more like a button.

Thanks,

[MLO] How Connect Android MLO 2 to Existing Cloud Sync Subscription

2016-10-26 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
I just upgraded to MLO 2 for my Android tablet. While I did not have
any problem setting up the Wifi sync, I'd prefer using my existing
Cloud Sync subscription.

When I go to that section in the settings for the Android version of
MLO2, it only shows instructions for starting a new subscription. When
I tap into that, there's no information I can find for existing
subscribers.

Anybody have insights on this?

BTW...So I now I have MLO on my Windows PC, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Air,
and Android. I keep trying new things, but always come back to MLO

Re: [MLO] Using Siri to Add Reminders to MLO

2016-10-13 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
If you have set up the ability to input tasks via email, I recommend the
following:

1) Give your email a unique name that Siri will easily recognize and not
mix up with your apps, and other contacts etc. In my case, I say, "email to
Pooba." Actually, that's not the name I use, but it gives you a sense of
the principle.

2) State whatever your task is.

3) Once you pause, Siri will display the email containing your task in the
subject line. If you're happy with just tap send.

4) Your task should appear in your MLO inbox in a few minutes.

[MLO] Using Siri to Add Reminders to MLO

2016-10-12 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
As many MLO users with iPhones already know, it is pretty easy to use
Siri to add reminders or notes to MLO.

Actually, it has been possible to do this for a long time, by having Siri
send a email to your sync address. But, recently, I really increased my
usage of this feature because Siri has recently become better at voice
recognition.

With that said, what would raise it by several notches is if tasks created
via email could be parsed, as is the case with the Rapid Entry box.

Comments, anyone?

Re: [MLO] How to Display All Projects in One Tab, without duplicates

2016-10-04 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi Steph and Dwight:

Both of your emails inspired me to take a closer look. And, of course...my
bad.

I turned out that I done two things that caused duplicates to be spawned:

   1. I kept a template of what I think a great daily routine for me to
follow. The template was there in case, I needed to recreate a format in
case I mistakenly deleted it. Of course, that's why MLO generates backup
   files. So I deleted that.
   2. Actually, I had backups.

Since deleting all of the above, everything makes sense again.

Thanks for being the catalysts for me finding what should have been
obvious.

Re: [MLO] How to Display All Projects in One Tab, without duplicates

2016-10-04 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi Dwight,

the hierarchical view is even more of a a mess.

Advance filter is just "isProject"

I think the problem is that I have the Projects in different location, as
opposed to all being in one place, i.e. all under the same top item. But,
usually, one of the things that MLO is great at is allowing me to have
items scattered all over the place, while still being able to put through
all in one place using views and filtering. It works for everything I do,
except projects.

Does anyone now of a way top prevent this from happening?

Re: [MLO] Re: How do you specify which inbox receives "Task by email"

2016-09-16 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
As it turns out, the Inbox is the default Inbox and you can't change it.
However, I've found that you can alter it's name. But to be on the safe
side, I wouldn't mess too much with that.

However, for the time being at least, you can definitely move it to
different locations...even to being a sub-item. I have found this to be a
very powerful, undocumented feature and I hope it does't go away. This
allows me to put Inbox, right into the "center of action"

saves a lot of the because I have found that the use of dates is an
all-or-non proposition. Sleeping tasks allow me to have non-dated items
that a simple Important and urgent.

[MLO] STOP subtasks from inheriting custom formatting

2016-08-15 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi,

I use custom formatting to make main hierarchical items stand out
visually. Therefore, when subtasks inherit that formatting, it defeats
the purpose.

I have unchecked "Subtasks Inherit Custom formatting" and yet this
behavior still occurs consistently.

This is problem I had brought up some time last year.

No...this does not lower the quality of my life or make me break out in hives.

But if someone knows a trick...or if MLO developers on the verge of
squashing this bud, it sure would be nice.

Thanks,
Eddie

Well I tried cut and paste this morning. While I didn't experience glitches
that can be attributed to small sample size.

Bigger picture, I highly recommend the native "move" command. I don't think
I've ever experienced any problems with it.

2016-07-30 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Steph:

The past year I've switched back and forth between using hierarchy and then
flat and then back to hierarchy.

But what seem to be settling on -- is both.

Hierarchy for planning for several separate online business I run.

Then I use either flag or context to create a view of the most important
things I need to do today across all businesses and view this in the flat
view.

Then, one at a time, I double click each item. It brings me to the
hierarchical parent. Then a use ctrl-R to focus. Then I execute on that
item.

I use a lot of automatic formatting to help me focus on what I have to do
now.

I mention the above, not to ask aquestion, but share how my usage has
evolved in trying to tackle exactly the same challenge you face: INCOMPLETE
TASKS.

I have not solved the problem. But there is no program or app that has
enabled me to come this close to solving the problem.

I've been wanting that for a while too. I don't know if it was 6 months or

You're at the very top of the page:

AND
2) One keystroke to create a parent item ABOVE the current item.

Almost the same as what you're asking.

2016-07-15 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Thanks, actually that sounds like it would still save some time over my
current method. Worth trying.

At the same time, I'm still thinking there's a setting some where that
allows me to achieve this in a more direct way. The reason I say is my
emails are currently going to a non-default inbox which I specified over a
year ago.

If only I could remember how I did it!

Hi Steph:

I use the Rapid Task Entry all the time and unfortunately, it does not
affect the location emails are sent to.

But I'm glad you remember, as I do, that there is a way to define the inbox
for tasks sent my email.

I hope there is someone out there who has the answer.

[MLO] How do you specify which inbox receives "Task by email"

Hi, I seem to recall there was a way to specify where tasks sent by email
wind up.

But I've searched both Help and through the community. I've found
references to this, but so far no clear instructions.

Anybody out there know how to do this?

Thanks,

Re: [MLO] Re: Group tasks by absolute importance or absolute urgency

2016-03-25 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
I do something that resembles what you're asking about as follows:

1) Create dedicated workspace.
2) In filter, set Show Hierarchy to "No"
3) Go Advanced filter setup
4) Set filters according to your criteria, i.e. importance and/or urgency

As I've said before, MLO does some magical things when you only show the
parent items by not showing Hierarchy. You outlines still exist of course
you'll still use them as you get into the granular execution of your tasks.

Re: [MLO] Re: I turned complex multiple unrelated projects into a simple "grocery list"

2016-03-02 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
a e:

You hit the bullseye. Flattening outlines to the non-hierarchical view is
what took my use of MLO to the next level...I think nearly year ago. I look
it at this way:

1) Hierarchy enables to you to plan.
2) The Flat view enables you to execute.

Using filters, different workspaces, and even automatic formatting make MLO
more powerful than every other takes management app (for the PC) I've ever
tired. That power does not translate all that will to the iOS version, but
that's okay, at least in my world because I'm mostly in front of my PC
during the course of my work.

Hopefully, they fix the glitch with sub-item inheriting parent dates soon.

HOW TO COMBINE HIERARCHY WITH FLATTENING:

1. Create multiple projects using hierarchy view. When I say projects I
don't necessarily mean MLO's project view, which I do you sometimes. I'm
just referring to groups of tasks that accomplish a certain higher goal
such as creating an email marketing campaign. If you're like me, you have a
huge number of items and it becomes bewildering to sort them all manually
by priority.

2. Create a separate workspace that is designated for the nonhierarchical
view.

3. In your task views window over on the left, enable show hierarchy: no.

4. Once you have gone to the flattened view, you can now have MLO sort by
importance, urgency, or effort – or as in my case all three of them
combined. This is where you begin to see the power of this because if you
have 50 different projects, you can now give them a rating of each of these
three variables and MLO will do the sorting for you. You have to enable
sorting in the settings, but I'm not going to get into those details here
as you can look that up in the help.

5. You can also use different workspaces in order to narrow down the field
of projects to just the handful that are important for each day. When I do
that revert back to manual sorting.

And basically that's it. Out of the complexity of setting this up, you wind
up, paradoxically, with simplicity.

I would not use MLO any other way.

I hope that helps,
Eddie

Re: [MLO] Re: Inherited Date

2016-02-09 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi Tammy:

The other side of the coin is for users, like myself, who use the
non-hierarchical view which allows you to sort automatically by importance,
urgency, and effort.

The non-hierarchical view, let's say to filter out everything except for
items with due date "today." We then run into situation in which sub items
which inherit parent due dates of today show up in this view. In those
cases sub items inheriting the parents is undesirable.

In these kinds of situations, I wind up having to manually clear the dates
from those subitems.

There is a checkbox under properties which is intended to prevent
inheritance from parents dates, but I find that it usually does not work.

A few months ago, when I brought this issue up, I thought I was in a very
small subset of users who used MLO in this way. But others have chimed in
on this issue, which was sort of a surprise.

Anyway, the developers had responded to me, saying that this issue will be
dealt with incoming updates.

Re: [MLO] Re: MLO runs very slow on my PC: Is this normal? Any ideas?

2015-12-01 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Jennifer,

I have been working with MLO for about 5 years. 2 years ago I actually
started a new file. It has built up thousands of items over that time. Up
until a week or two ago it was going at lightning speed doing the usual
basic things.

But last week I notice that it slowed down dramatically.

After trying a whole bunch of things, including archiving old done tasks,
and starting fresh using a backup from a few days before I noticed the
problem started happening, I saw some initial success followed by
disappointment when MLO reverted back to slowing down and giving me the
"not responding" error message.

I sent an email to MLO tech support and they were spectacularly fast in
answering my question.

They asked me if I was using a lot of custom icons, and indeed I was using
them for every single one of my tabs. They recommended that I remove them.
I did remove the ones for the normal tabs. But I could not remove the ones
for the pinned tabs because that would make them unidentifiable.

Since I did that 2 hours ago, my MLO has been operating at what I
considered to be normal hyperdrive speed.

We'll see how things go the rest of the day and into the rest of the week.
But so far that solution seems to have worked for me.

[MLO] Is there a setting that prevents new sub-item from inheriting date of parent item?

2015-11-23 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi, I've brought this up before.

I'm one of those, probably all too rare, MLO users that uses automatic sort
by importance, urgency, and effort. That requires that you work in the
 non-hierarchical view.

The problem is that when I create sub-items, they automatically inherit the
dates of the parent items. So when I have a few to see all of today's
items. Not only do I have the parent item, but I also have the child items
show up, which defeats the purpose of using this non-hierarchical view.

Then I have to manually remove dates of sub items.

It's been a few months since I reported this to the developers. But now I
see that my MLO has updated to a beta version. I'm just wondering if
anybody has noticed any fix or toggle functionality that would address this
problem.

*The ability to sort by importance, urgency, and efforts, is a huge game
changer for those of you who have far too many tasks to sort manually. I
believe that this is one of the most powerful ways to use them MLO. *

Re: [MLO] Re: How do I stop my bad habit of "ploughing too deeply" (i.e. too perfectionist)?

2015-10-02 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Actually, I think the quotes from General George Patton really does touch
directly on the issues that you're dealing with. Many times procrastination
arises out of the desire to want to get everything perfect.

I myself I'm guilty of that. I refuse to move forward because I worry that
I have not thoroughly covered every single base.. But what I have found is
that it is often the case that I am just deluding myself. And what stands
in the way is simply an uncomfortable feeling That you're missing something.

If you look back and reflect, as you have already done, you see that your
perfectionism is causing you to dwell too long on a particular project.

So the quote from Patton is simply telling us that you reach a certain
point where things are in pretty good shape and that it's time to move on
to something else. Don't worry, you can always come back to it later on.

Patent is not saying now now now, he is saying proceed if you have a good
plan now.

I use an app called forest Which works along the same lines as Pomodoro,
except that it has a more compelling approach to punishing you if you get
off track.

[MLO] Is there a way to turn off default "inherit parent dates"

2015-09-07 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hello, my fellow MLO brethren:

Because I now use the very powerful method of automatic sorting by
Importance, Urgency and Effort -- I have now have run into this problem:

When there are sub-items, they, by default, inherit parent dates. This is
the case even when have unchecked the "Inherit Parent Dates" box.

When this occurs, sub items will appear along with the parent item in
the *non-hierarchical auto-sort
view which confusing.*

Does anyone know of a way to fully disable this default setting? I can't
find anything. I'm guessing it's in the registry.

This really defeats the purpose of doing the automatic sorting capability.

2015-08-25 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi:

That's the beauty of it all. I just copy and paste from MLO into iMindQ.
The caveat is that since MLO does not have a multi-branch structure, you
kinda have to copy and paste one level of at a time. But, you see that's
not an issue for me because I normally get to a point in my MLO outlines
where I know...Hmm -- it's time time to switch this project over to iMindQ.
So then I copy and paste beginnings of my Mindmap from MLO to iMindq and
then build from there.

As for plug-ins, I thought I was a genius when I tried the following:

1) Export to MindManager
2) Open using FreeMind
3) Open FreeMind file using iMindQ.

But unfortunately, the export to Mindmanager didn't even work.

Let me know if you have any success with this!

2015-08-23 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi John:

To answer your question about strict hierarchy, iMindQ is set up for
project management and ToDo lists, but I would find it cumbersome because
within one Mindmap, there is only one central starting point. So, if I
interpret your question correctly, the answer is yes.

That is why can't be a iMindQ or MLO purist -- for now at least.

But with most big projects I do in MLO, I come to a point where there are
many interelationships and scenarios. MLO becomes abstract and convoluted.
Everything is suddenly crystal clear when I envision it in iMindQ.

2015-08-23 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
I use a MindMap along with MLO to set up tasks in a rigid sequence.

I've tried to be an MLO purist, but there's a point where, in my work,
things get too complicated, with too many contingencies and scenarios to
build...so that's when I turn to the Mindmap in order to see big picture
granularly.

I've tried to be a MindMap purist (iMindQ is what I use), but it's overkill
for simple to-do lists and projects.

I mention this because doing the horizontal chain is insanely easy using a
Mindmap. But it gives you the flexibility to make it more complex if you
need to.

Hi, Elizabeth. My approach is very similar to what you have described.
Comparing your approach with John's, it seems to me that both approaches
achieve largely the same results - easily sets up multiple streams of tasks
with linear dependency (ie tasks must be done in order), allows completed
tasks to be removed from the active listing, allows you to execute tasks
out of order if you want, easy to see the next task, easy to get a view of
just the next task in each series with no extra lines for tasks that aren't
immediately actionable, but easy to get a view of those other pending
(future) tasks. I love the fact that MLO supports both of these approaches
and that everyone canselectthe approach that most comfortable, or invent a
 new one.

Trading off between these two approaches, I find that John's approach has
one significant advantage: from a view that shows next actions for several
different streams, you can view the hidden future tasks of any stream by
just hovering the (mouse) pointer over the relevant line in the view. By
contrast, the approach you described would require that the tab containing
the next actions view would have synchronized task selection with the first
tab, then you would doubleclick the relevant line in the view to switch to
an all-tasks view showing the line and its neighbors, then double-click
again to switch back. While managable, this is definitely more complex that
 John's process.

Offsetting this advantage are several disadvantages to my way of thinking,
including a much greater amount of editing required whenever a subtask is
completed, loss of nonlinear dependencies (eg two tasks that run in
parallel; also one task that can start whenever both predecessor tasks
(running in parallel) have completed. Also loss of any history of completed
subtasks and when each one was completed.

Instead, I use the vertical approach, tag the project/folder as complete
in order, and use a view of only active items so only the next action is
shown (not taking up too much room).

If I'm feeling I need to focus on that project and I need to see the whole
list, I change the view and zoom in to just that project.

I find keeping sub-tasks separate from each other allows me the full
flexibility of adding dependencies. For example, maybe it is mostly
linear, but there are a few where I can pick and choose the order in the
middle, but the last few tasks can't be done until all the middle ones are
 done.

 Good luck!

 Interesting, Eddie

Yes, for more complex projects there is definitely a role for mindmapping,
because it allows you to see all the different areas of a project on one
screen in 2D rather than in effect in 1D (or 1.5D if you include
 indentation!).
For one thing this let's you see what parts of the project you may not
have been paying enough attention to.

HOWEVER for me it mindmapping didnt work well for actual *task
management* lists of such projects. I think it was just rather hard to
see things like Next Task (nor next 2 or 3 tasks) within all my projects on
a single screen. Somehow with larger projects and too many tasks (say over
100 or so) the whole thing starts to melt down!
Possibly there is something clever one could do with filters in
MindManager but I never discovered it!

Regarding hierachies yes, being forced to start in a central point is
 exactly what I meant.

What sounds brilliant on paper is https://www.thebrain.com. There is no
central point at all and you just feed in the relationship and a sort of
web / network / graph builds up. In many ways this is very much how the
 human mind works... in theory.

However personally I absolutely loathed it in practice. The reason is that
I, like many people I guess, actually work in a series of mental pictures.
And with TheBrain, every time you add something new, the whole damned thing
wobbles spins around all over the place, and the last photography your
brain took is suddenly upside down/inside out/ all over the place. Absolute
 nightmare!

Interestingly enough part of the reason I *do* quite like Mindjet's
MindManager mindmapping tool is because as you add new things it only moves
things around when it more or less has to. i.e. Things by default snap into
intelligent positions, but without being in your face about it. And when it
all moves around it still pretty much looks like the previous layout.

[By analogy, for anyone how has worked with HTML you will appreciate how
useful it is to be able to apply a tool to tidy out the code *when
required* - correct formatting indenting etc - *and yet* it's useful to
be able stop the software from messing with your layouts unnecessarily.
i.e. Most of the time we want the new version to look as much as possible
like the old version so that we can find our way around! MindManager is
 quite good like that]

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with TheBrain.

And please do let me know iof you think iMindQ is better than MindManager.
(I have invested too much money into MindManager already but I see no long
term future with them mainly because they are WAY too expensive for the
non-corporates SMEs like moi... so I am on the looking for new a new tool
 of comparable power and sophistication.)

interpret your question correctly, the answer is yes.

Re: [MLO] Re: MLO end of life?

2015-07-23 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
While the MLO's PC version's user interface has some inefficiencies that
I've mentioned in this forum, the reason that I stick with it is that I
have not found anything better.

Most importantly, I attribute any development slowdown, to it's having just
about everything feature you can pack into it. Over the past couple years
that my business and grown and become more complex, I've found features
I've never used before and MLO has adapted to my needs.

The area where I think it needs some movement is where you take the
existing interface and just make it easier or more intuitive to use. But as
for as development on features themselves, my list is short:

1) Make the iOS versions pull in reminders spoke in through Siri

Other than that, just make it easier to use. Would be nice to have macros
for repetitive series of commands for example.

I am one of those who thinks he's tried everything started with EccoPro
in the 1990's to what's current both in the PC and iOS world. It would be
labor intensive to list them all here, but if to Google best Task
Managers AND best ToDo lists for iOS chances are good that I've tried
the all ones that are the highest ranked. The one exception is Nosbe (too
much ego over there).

Currently there are 4 that I use:

MLO (for past 3 years --a record!)
ToDo Cloud (for 4 or 5 months)
SimpleMind (Mindmap)
iMindQ (Mindmap - temporary hiatus until they got their iOS act together)

Though only reason I use ToDo Cloud is due to it's impeccable Siri
integration. But I wind up send a good chunk of those reminders to MLO.

For a long time, I've been doing multiple project each of which have their
own task list. That's certainly doable, but at the same time, you lose
sight of the big picture and ToDo items tend to get lost in outlines.

Well...today, remembered that ToDos can be flattened. I knew that before,
but I returned to that view for the first time in over a year.

It simplifies complex project to down to the level of grocery list!

Massively improves my focus on simply checking off each task.

Re: [MLO] Re: Mind Maps (revisted)

Today I had MLO and iMindQ open simultaneously, one in each of two
monitors.

In iMindQ, I had a complicated cross-marketing deal I had setup. Some
aspects of it are linear. Other aspects have conditional branches.

In MLO, I have a linear checklist of todo items that are related to the
execution of the setup I have iMindQ.

I have tried doing both in each of these programs. As hard as iMindQ tries
to include Task and Project management, I find it to be awkward and clunky.

With MLO I can't visualize complex relationships between multiple companies
I work with.

But putting both together is gets the job done.

Re: [MLO] Add tasks to inbox with voice recognition on IOS iPhone or iPad.

2015-06-01 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
I do that all time. There are two ways with MLO:

1) Using Siri, I dictate a reminder sends it to MLO via email which then
automatically goes into my Inbox. Siri is accessed by long pressing the
Home button. This can be done from sleep mode.
2) I can open MLO and then dictate a new task into my Inbox.

There is an even better way which I hope the developers of MLO some day
implement. That is to integrate with a folder in IOS native reminders.

[MLO] Hotkey question for MLO old-timers for Insert task above current selected task

2015-05-14 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi:

I started using MLO around 2011. At that time, I'm 90% sure there was
hotkey command that fits the following scenario:

*Let's say that I have a task that is currently selected. What is the
hotkey command that creates a task above it?*

I had asked tech support, but they stated it doesn't exist. So maybe it did
exist, but was eliminated.

However, such a hotkey is important because many times I have an item at
the very top of list and I want to add a task above it.

If there is no hotkey command for this, can anyone suggest a simple way to
do this that does not require me to enter a task below it and then move
above that other task?

Thanks,
Eddie

Re: [MLO] Re: MLO Tutorials. What I really hate about MLO.

2013-11-22 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
I think another approach to using MLO is to come up with you own strategy
for time and task management. I started out wanting to use GTD, but evolved
away from that because MLO can be time management system in itself which
makes, GTD feel inflexible and limited.

I run a business and categorize by revenue and non-revenue generating
activities using the tabs up at the top. I use the outline capability to
organize project and tasks.

I just the Starred View to create my to-do list for each day.

It's simple.

I think GTD has evolved into sort of a religion. While many people benefit
from it, others like myself, find it unnatural, hard to stick to, and prone
to driving you into wasting time.

I'm sure many people will disagree with me and that's okay. But the main my
point is that if you find it difficult to implement GTD in MLO, just
explore the features of MLO and come up with your own system.

*c) use only the Outline View and the Active Actions by Context*

 and that's it.

Of course, you can use more complicated structures, but if you are
confused about lot of folders and contexts, you need a very simple
 structure.

On the other hand, how Olivier R wrote, the MLO is just a tool, like a
paper, notebook. You must not think the MLO software gets your thinks done.
The main solution is in your mind.

[MLO] With two monitors, set up workspace appears on other monitor

2013-10-01 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi:

This is a very minor thing. Not a high prioirty, but I hope you can fix it
one of these days.

I use an external monitor in addition to my laptop's native screen. MLO is
usually on the external monitor.

When I right-click a tab to setup a workspace, the properties box appears
on my laptop screen even though MLO is on the monitor. But what makes it
harder to deal with is that not all the properties are accessible from the
properties box.

I have another program, not related to MLO, that also does behavior BUT, at
least all the properties are accessible.

Right now, the quick fix for me is to simply move the MLO window to my
laptop when I need to setup workspace associated with a tab.

Thanks,
Eddie

[MLO] Weird...duplicate todo's

What I started observing this morning is that there can be multiple

What makes it even stranger is that, as a test, I deleted one of the
duplicate To-Dos thinking that it would delete all the duplicate to-dos, as
well as the outline entire within the ouline view. It didn't.

Somebody please enlighten me on how this can be?

Every time I sent a reminder, I have to check the box that says, play
sound. I am required to do this even though I say yes to use the
settings for future reminders.

Is there a way to have it default to play sound?

Re: [MLO] Re: Hotkey for checking and unchecking

2012-01-31 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Spectacular...same as Bonsai.

Funny thing is that that was very first thing I tried. But for some reason,
it didn't work.

Now it does and that's the important thing.

Thanks Pottster!

[MLO] Hotkey for checking and unchecking

2012-01-30 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi Guys:

I must be missing something. Surely there is a hotkey for checking and
unchecking the Completed checkbox for a task. If there is I haven't been
able to find it.

I did find however, alt C, but completes both the task and the
subtaskswhich kinda overdoes it.

Re: [MLO] Quickly putting a task in a specific folder

2012-01-30 Thread birdv...@gmail.com
Hi Eberhard:

Thanks for posting the AutoHotKey Guidlines. Given the power of MLO, I find
myself having to memorize a lot of hotkey commands. In fact, I printed out
a cheat sheet and refer to it often.

I am hoping that your approach will help me streamline things a bit.

 Hi Eberhard,

I'm a big fan of both MLO and AHK, but I think that this add-on is
overkill for me, given that I want only one feature out of it.

 Thanks,
 Ram.

 Dear Ram,

I'm using AutoHotKey in combination with a script that was published

Check it out if you like. For me it was a boost in productivity for my
 MLO system.

 Hello,

I want to have a keyboard shortcut for putting the currently-selected
 task in a specific folder.

For example, every time I press Ctrl-Alt-W I want MLO to put the
selected task in my Work folder.

Can that be accomplished with MLO?

 Thanks,
 Ram.
