It is always a fine line. I have seen Groups degrade into a flea market
listing with no real content. On the other hand, a known source having
a new item, or deciding to clear out some treasures is genuine good news
to the group.

In my mind - sending a message every day with a latest offer Too
Commercial. Sending a message with a unique new item say more than a
month later than the last time, probably OK as News. Unearthing the
long forgotten Buroughs 15 segment Nixie Mother-load - Hot news.

Maybe (some) of you took my comments the wrong way, I have no problem
seeing the fruits of others labour and even selling/advertising here, so
the groups agrees NOT to abide by nicks comment "Just a polite reminder
that this forum is NOT a commercial marketplace - there are other sites for
that. Occasional offers for sale, fine; Commercial operation. No."

I for one though it was great that a guy (to whom Nicks post was aimed) was
letting us know he had a large(?) stock of nixie tubes for sale, even
offering group discounts, which to my mind is in the spirit of being part
of a community in the first place.
Rather than stopping Dieter (Who IS running a commercial enterprise) it's
always great to see his work and ideas. Dieter, in my mind, is a true
fanatic of all things nixie just as much as we are and I like to be
informed when someone comes up with a stock of tubes (Not just ready made
units) and a bit of group discount is even better.

2013-02-03 Thread Jon
One of the great things about this list has always been the very moderate,
sensible approach to postings with a commercial flavour. The odd one does
none of us any harm, and actually serves a positive purpose by connecting
people who want to sell relevant materials for our interest area with
people who want to buy.

And given the service that Dieter provides to the entire community by
sharing freely the years worth of accumulated technical info hosted on his
website, I for one would cut him more slack than pretty much anyone else
when it comes to the occasional posting. Finally of course, it is a very
pretty clock!

Jon.

PS. Since we're on the subject of commercial breaks, I do have a NIB fully
tested ZM1206 pandicon which I'd entertain offers for. But by mail, not on
the list of course :)

I'm certain most of the list members understand we have an interest in
something which you can't go to the local hobby shop to get and how
cooperation between members (Tim's group purchase, Dieter sharing tube
specs, etc ) is the only way we can do anything. In addition to the
supply problem I prefer to purchase things from list members ahead of
completely unknown sources.

The 16F88 has 4k of code space, and it is easy to use a serial EEPROM like
the MCP24C256. Then you would have oodles of room for hardcoded waypoints.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Black'n'Wood Nixie Clock is available

2013-02-03 Thread Matt
I think that Dieter's latest hobbyist kit is definitely within the scope of hobbyists discussion. He elicited our feedback, which I
think that we are willing to discuss. If he did not post it himself, I imagine that another hobbyist would (am I wrong?). Someone
who sells only components is not nearly as interesting for our discussion, although I have noticed a lot of posts about unique eBay
finds (which I still find interesting). The fact that money will be changing hands shortly does not make it less interesting to
someone like myself who enjoys the visceral warm glow of neon digits. That said, I do not speak for anyone other than myself. I am
just saying that I welcome that post in my inbox for those reasons and more.

You bring up an interesting point by labeling his products as "ready built". Although the software on the provided PIC leaves
little to be desired for most people, it would be nicer for a more software hobbyist person such as myself to be able to run my own
code. But nothing is stopping me from using the case and essential components and substituting an Arduino or something for the
brains. For example, I am very interested in using 8 digit Nixies with pinocc.io so that I can do more things with it than just
showing the current date and time. A 8 digit version of the "IN-18 Blue Dream" with a pinocc.io inside would be a dream come true
for me. Unfortunately, building enclosures is my weak spot (anyone want to help me with that?), so hearing about new ones is
interesting despite that there are ready built electronics available.
