directory...(in home?)

dove troveremo in nostri bei pacchetti in formato rpm e li installiamo.

 eseguire come root
  vim /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

 5) bene.. ci siamo i windowsiani riavvierebbero, altri scriverebbero

 7) aprire unreal tournement 2003 demo e giocare

[newbie-it] isdn

2002-12-02 Per discussione Daniele Micci
Ciao a tutti,

9? E funziona tutto regolarmente? GRAZIE!!

In tale manuale, in ITALIANO, c'è scritto cosa è Mandrake Control

Per caso prima avevi installato i driver NVidia? Prova a rimetterceli.

proprietari e relative estensioni GLX e' praticamente impossibile tornare

Io l'ho provata a 300 e funziona bene.
particolari il file che xsane produce se non ricordo male e' un .pnm);
cmq poi potra' essere convertito.

Ps: com'è il costo cartuccia nero/copie?

A me sembrano delle cartucce talmente minuscole :P
Ognuna costa 35 EUR+IVA.

The auto in the line means automatic file type and the noauto means
 they aren't mounted at boot.

Got it. So is the position of 'auto' what causes it to be read correctly, as

therefore would not be specified as such?

After installing and a run through man hdparm i used it to display current

experimenting with the speed setting hdparm -E8 /dev/hdb did not alter the
initial CD recognition phase at all. Still having to eject then remount the
disk a random number of times before it is recognised. Once recognised it
will read anything from the disk as long as the drive motor spins.

My next question is where too from here? If i turn off DMA (it can be done in
BIOS) do i also have to set the UDMA setting to something else? Any other
suggestions short of a replacement drive? Any and all help accepted if i
havent allienated all those that tried last week.

To show that i haven't been totally sitting on my tod on this task.

In quite a number of installations of MDK so far, I've found that
particular path statements need to be put in place for applications to
be happy campers as it were. First and foremost would be to edit the
/etc/profile and add:

KDEDIR='/usr'
export KDEDIR

Second modification is in the /etc/ld.so.conf file - adding the
following and then re-running ldconfig afterwards:

/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib
---

This has become apparent on more than just a few machines I've installed
MDK on so far (17) - but once done, and once rebooted, they generally
act like happy campers until the next issue arises...

Cheers!

These accumulating files may be the remnants of an ancient data-based
civilization being vented through the ether into the broadband

that there is nothing better to put into your home directory than
garbage? (g)

Personally, I think they're probably either cookies, lock files, or
random bits of MDK ending up there along side the core dump files to
keep them company...

First of all, I would like to thank you for all the time you spend to
help me.
Then the libghttp1-devel was required in order to rebuilt the rpm.
Therefore, I installed all gnome libs and the window-manager.
Then, the reinstallation of the rpm seemed to be successfull. But the
problem remains. It's strange. It's a shame, but as cddb is now working,
 it could be worse ...

the full OS including many developement packages, though not

say all these dependency problems in linux are tiresome,
if they are needed , why not include them in the main download ,
saves time and trouble. There has got to be some reason why you don't
get the helpfile, and I and others do. The difference must be either
the choice of OS interface or some package or other that you
have missing.

Check out http://www.nostatic.org/grip/

I see mention of something called libghttp that sounds like a possible

help file try putting up package manager and doing a search to see if you
have it. if not download and install it and see what it does. A search
of my OS reveals a certain libghttp1-devel V1.0.9-4mdk. I'm guessing
but I would not be supprised if you don't have it installed, and it
has to be on our CD's somewhere for me to have it installed.

In short , the problem now seems either to be the interface, which
I would not rule out , since manuals, at least good ones,John are a
judicious balance between words and pictures , maybe your desktop
interface lacks something, but first off we need to find out if you
have every possible app package installed. Unfortuneatly linux
is a bit of a headache for newbies as far as dependencies go.
we do not understand the relationships very well, and the way things
are put together it can offten be baffelling try to find out. The website
is the first port of call after thak maybe sourceforge or some place
like that .

Yes they are really really nice.

First make sure you have the xscreensaver RPM installed.
Then install the new OpenGL screensavers RPM by following this link
http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php?sid=2540lang=en

To use it I wrote a script called ~/.xscreenstart.sh containing the lines

#!/bin/sh
xscreensaver -nosplash

Then make the script executable.

Now just insert that script into the startup sequence of your Window Manager.
For KDE you can do that by right clicking on the desktop and
CreateNewLinktoApplication in the pop up window give the link a name, and
in the execute tab enter sh ~/.xscreenstart.sh

You can now use konqueror to drag and drop this link into the hidden directory
~/.kde/Autostart

You must also disable the KDE screen saver :)

You can configure/test the screensavers with xscreensaver-demo typed in a user
terminal.

derek

(Notes for newbies:- ~ is your home directory== /home/username/
Files prefixed with '.' are hidden Use ViewShowhiddenfiles in konqueror to
see them.
A file can be made executable by right clicking on it in konqueror select
PropertiesPermission and check the exec box)

If you installed from RPM's as I did, they should have been added to

end of that file - the format is not hard to figure out. You can
check if they have been activated with the command xscreensaver-demo

Install the xmms-cdread-0.14a-2mdk.i586rpm:
Go to the file location and click twice on it.

To play Audio CD:
optionpreferences and then choose Audio CD Reader 0.14a (libcdread.so)
and then choose configureoptionsAdd CD to play list

Is there any configuration that can make Audio CD play automatically in

[newbie] internet sharing help needed

2002-12-02 Per discussione magnet
Hi all,
Well back from the dead once again after another fresh install following a
lost battle trying to get a firewall installed and working, damn that
shorewall!

Machine is running mdk 9.0. So here is my question... How do I manually
configure my main machine to share it's modem connection to the other 5
machines on my LAN?

This is my /etc/sysconfig/network file:

NETWORKING=yes
FORWARD_IPV4=true
HOSTNAME=linux1.local.net
DOMAINNAME=local.net
GATEWAY=192.168.0.1
GATEWAYDEV=ppp0

The other machines are all using the 192.168.0.xxx range and all point to
192.168.0.1 as the gateway they should be using.

I do NOT want to use the control centre because it demands installing
shorewall, which has been the biggest problem of all here causing no end of
trouble with blocked ports, breaking samba and ftp. I simple hate it and the
documentation isn't simple enough for me to understand how to write iptables
rules yet to achieve a fully secure machine.

Hope some of you will take the time to offer some advice on this.

regards
magnet

Got it. So is the position of 'auto' what causes it to be read correctly,
as fs=, or is it simply that 'auto' is a default behaviour of mounting and
therefore would not be specified as such?

 Anne
Yes, the position is important. In the case of zip drives, this would be vfat
and with floppies, it can be vfat, ext2 or auto. Sometime have a look at your
file systems using linuxconf. It breaks down the setup of fstab better and
IMHO gives a better description.

Re: [newbie] Software sources manager - cant find disk 2

2002-12-02 Per discussione Technoslick
Here's what I have in mine for CD #2:

URL: removable://mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS2
hdlist path: ../base/hdlist2.cz

This is referring to the 3-CD downloaded version of MDK 9.0. I have no
problems with installing from my second CD. I don't know if this matters,
but I do have 'supermount' active.

Hope this helps.

Hi
When I installed Mandrake 9.0, it seemed to not be able to read disk 2.
However, I can access disk 2 from the desktop, and it displays the
contents OK.
In the software sources manager, I try to add this disk - URL:
removable://mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS2, path: ../base/hdlist2.c, and get
the message Unable to update meium; it will be automatically disabled@
Can anyone help?

[newbie] Getting multiple ghost shadow effects from gfx card

2002-12-02 Per discussione magnet
Hi all,

I have a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 gfx card installed on my mdk 9.0 machine using
nvidia drivers 1.0-3123. I'm currently running 1280x1024 in 16bit display,
although this weird effect is present in all resolutions on any of the
differently sized monitors I have here.

Beautiful card and all that, but for these strange ghosting images. I'll
explain the effect briefly.

There are multiple ghosted images, fading out to nothing after about the 4th
occurence, attached to the right horizontal side of any screen image, window
edge, widgets, text, and the mouse pointer.

Does anyone have a clue what might be causing this? It has happened on all
versions of the nvidia drivers and all versions of mandrake I have used since
installing this card.

Apart from this niggle, these cards are the puppie's privates 8-))

Are you asking about the menu choices added to the the very top of the
starting menu in KDE3? If so, that is called the Quick Start area. To adjust
the number of entries that show up go to 'K | Configure Panel |
Preferences'. Click on the 'Menus' tab. At the bottom, you will see where
you can designate how many, and whether they should be 'frequently used' or
'recently used' menu choices.

Howdy Angus;

Have you looked at file:/etc/lilo.conf yet? You'd be looking at the line that
says 'timeout=xxx'. In my case it's 50, but I only want a 5 second delay to
choose a kernel to boot or allow default boot. So for the 30 second delay you
want you'd have timeout=300, correct? After you change it open a terminal and
type:

su
root password when prompted
/sbin/lilo -v

to register the configuration change. I'd do that anyway even if it already
reads 300 since it's apparent that something isn't kosher.

I still don't trust the Mandrake Control Center completely. Some of the things
that made me smile during the beta/RC testing for 9.0 seem to have
degenerated into a bad joke on those of us that raved about the new release

 Anne

There is an errata here telling you how to install on a Via C3/Eden CPU
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/errata.php3#viac3
Unfortunately the errata does not actually say how to install using an
alternate boot kernel.
What you have to do is insert CD1 and boot the PC. At the first screen hit F1
for more options, and at the 'boot:' prompt type
alt2 enter The system will then use the alternative Linux2.2 boot kernel.
At the appropriate time you then follow the instructions in the errata.

It took me a couple of attempts to get it right, because you have to hastily
go to another console and delete a directory just after the installer starts
writing packages to disc. Once Mandrake is installed, it works just great. I
did try recompiling the kernel with C3 optimisations, but it made no
difference compared to the standard kernel. My 533Mhz Eden gives me a CPU
rating of 1064 bogomips . This compares to 1697 bogomips for my 850MHz Athlon
desktop. (If you want to compare that to your CPU open KDE
ControlCentreInformationProcessor)

For a desktop machine it would be a bit on the slow side, but as a
firewall/server it is just great.

There is also an 800Mhz version available for £67, but this has a small (and
quiet) CPU fan. I wanted a computer that was totally silent. Pity I spoiled
it by using an old rubbishy hard drive which clicks and whirrs all the time
:) When I am feeling wealthy I will replace the hard drive with a super
quiet Seagate Barracuda.

At the first screen hit
F1 for more options, and at the 'boot:' prompt type
alt2 enter The system will then use the alternative Linux2.2 boot
kernel. At the appropriate time you then follow the instructions in the
 errata.

It took me a couple of attempts to get it right, because you have to
hastily go to another console and delete a directory just after the
installer starts writing packages to disc. Once Mandrake is installed, it
works just great. I did try recompiling the kernel with C3 optimisations,
but it made no difference compared to the standard kernel. My 533Mhz Eden
gives me a CPU rating of 1064 bogomips . This compares to 1697 bogomips for
my 850MHz Athlon desktop. (If you want to compare that to your CPU open KDE
 ControlCentreInformationProcessor)

For a desktop machine it would be a bit on the slow side, but as a
 firewall/server it is just great.

There is also an 800Mhz version available for £67, but this has a small
(and quiet) CPU fan. I wanted a computer that was totally silent. Pity I
spoiled it by using an old rubbishy hard drive which clicks and whirrs all
 the time

:) When I am feeling wealthy I will replace the hard drive with a super

 quiet Seagate Barracuda.

 derek

Thanks for that Derek. The install does sound tricky, but it's worth bearing
in mind. Systems are generally pretty noisy, these days. Mine isn't too
bad, but that's at least in part due to the fact that I don't have a modern
high-powered graphics card, so only psu-fan and cpu-fan.

I think it would have to be the higher powered version for a desktop machine,
as you say - but it wasn't clear to me until I got your post just what speed
we were talking about. Still at £69+vat for mobo+processor, it can't be bad.

My initial install of 9.0 was pretty near perfect, and supermount worked
flawlessly. Shame I had to mess it up.

The problems started when I tried to get my smartcardreader working. The
upshot was that sda disappeared totally. I have tried running HardDrake but
it just doesn't seem to see the LS120 drive, which was at install identified
correctly and mounted as

none /mnt/LS120 supermount
dev=/dev/sda1,fs=auto,--,iocharset=iso8859-15,sync,codepage=850,umask=0 0 0

Has anyone any idea how I can get the system to find this device again?

Anne
Kinda sounds like an IRQ conflict. Do you have PNP OS set to no in your bios?
Take a look at your IRQs and see if there are ones with more than one device using the irq. If usb and /dev/sda are both trying to use the same irq that could be the problem. HTH

The trick is VIA. The VIA-Cyrix3 processors try'n pretend they're

some i486 characteristics. Their 800+ cpu's perform at 400mhz levels,

you can always run:

depmod -a

Doing this will tell you what and where the module dependency is
hanging...then you can start from that point and work forward (or
backward as the case may be)

Dear john,

I have found out why my computer hangs.
I am missing a file in my /lib/modules/2.4.5

What went wrong with my installation process?

wouter,
I've been googling on the net with modules.dep

seems like it's a vital file, that lists module dependencies
of modules run at boot time, without one you will not get a boot.

There appears to be an association between modules.dep
and depmod + modprobe commands

man modprobe : high level handling of loadable modules.

man depmod : handles dependency descriptors for loadable
kernel modules

So the question is why has the installer not created a modules.dep for
you , but how did you get onto this, what was the sequence of events.

John

Just a comment here,...I'm using the 800Mhz board in a slimline case as
a print, DNS, and samba (for the printers)server and it's rock solid.
Loaded that sucker up with RAM (PC133 ram is sooo cheap now), and I'm
very happy with the results. It's handling 3 HP4050TN printers with
JetDirect Cards without a single burp. Didn't use the secondary kernel
though, just the standard 2.4.xxx one. Thanks for the info, but until it
screws up badly, I'll leave it as is.
