what the heck and just swallowed it. Well for a week now I've been sipping the
stuff and it's not bad. My wife got real concerned when I told her but I told
her I could stop any time

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] changing brake fluid?

2012-08-24 Thread James O'Gorman
Yes, recommended on pretty much all vehicles every year or every other
year.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture as part of 'what it does' so that it doesn't
condense and sit in your lines. After a while, it will reach its saturation
point, and along the way, its boiling point decreases. the actual temps may
very, but it starts around something like 400+ degrees, and when it is old,
it will be in the low 200s before it boils.

230F isn't that hot for brakes, so it wouldn't take much to boil with some
'spirited' driving.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: changing brake fluid?

I need breaks to stop LOL.

last week I was changing the brake fluid on a bike and got some in my mouth
(don't ask!). It tasted terrible but the second time it happened I thought
what the heck and just swallowed it. Well for a week now I've been sipping the
stuff and it's not bad. My wife got real concerned when I told her but I told
her I could stop any time

Yea my clymer says it shouldn't be done unless the brakes feel spongy or

[Nighthawk Lovers] Backrest for a cb450sc

2012-08-24 Thread KimAnn
Hi all,

I was just at my mechanics and he said in order to get a backrest on
my bike it would have to be welded. Is this true. I have a 1986 Honda
Nighthawk 450.

Also, if a backrest does exist for that model, anybody have one for
sale?

Thanks!

Ahhh...
 In a word then - no - it shouldn't require welding -
providing of course one can find the proper backrest. They were often
a universal design that require shims and spacers to be installed. The
Shims and spacers were different on each bike.
A KG brand would probably do the trick - that was the brand
of luggage rack I had on my 450.

Hang around here long enough and you'll notice a pattern - every time
someone says backrest then people start asking for pictures of the
brackets. I had to make my own for my 650. I took my bike apart a few days
after I put the backrest on, so I still haven't been able to take good pics
of them yet.

Hi,

I don't know if you can open this picture. If not, tell me how to get it in a
form to copy to my e-mail, that all can see.

This is my original (1st) CB 750. I cannot remember what year it is but 1970
comes to mind. It's a cam tower 750. It has replaceable cam towers. No need to
replace the head if the bearing surfaces go bad. I really liked this bike.
Great around town bike.

The girl sitting on it, is Laura. She is part of my posse. A group of guys
and gals that hung as a group. Amazingly enough, a lot of us still remain
connected. I just found out that Laura had a stroke the other day. She can't
be much older than me, 55. Hope all goes well for her and her family.

Thought I would post a bit of history!!

Thank you,

Ross

You can do pics. Each conversation (thread) on the forum can be followed by
email. The subject line is the name of the thread. If you reply to one of
the emails you can attach an image just like you would in any email. Any
email send to nighthawk_lovers@googlegroups.com will make it onto the list.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: changing brake fluid?

2012-08-24 Thread Gibs
So I just changed it... I hope I did it right, it works answer it's a more
responsive I think. I only drained it from one caliper though, is it supposed
to work like that? Also I looked in the clutch master cylinder (or wtvr the lil
box next to the clutch is called) and its all brown and not clear, how do I
change that?
I took it out to test the brakes and make sure it runs normal, and found
the shifting got really weird and all of a sudden it's hard to shift down. I
also started hear a sort of rattling noise as it revs around 3k rpm or more :-(
what's going on??

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: changing brake fluid?

2012-08-24 Thread Kurt Nolte
This is on a 650? You should bleed both calipers, each in turn.

On the 650, there should be a bleed valve on the left side of the bike, on
a cylinder shaped thing just above the engine case. You are correct, there
is a clutch master cylinder and it is on the handlebars, you bleed the
clutch much the same way you bleed the brakes.

No, you have to bleed both sides.
Drain and bleed the clutch the same way you did the brakes. A service
manual will come in handy for this bit.
At risk of sounding rude, both of these systems are nothing to mess around
with, if you don't know how to do it correctly, I would suggest taking it
to a shop.

Well hopefully this week Im gonna be able to bring it in to this guy who
teaches you how to work on bikes. He teaches you how to restore older bikes
as a business, I thought that would be a lot of fun and helpful. I tried
following the manual drained it out of the left caliper and almost fucked
it up draining out of the right caliper. Its clear now and filled
appropriately but I got nervous I did something wrong.. Ill bring it to
that guy and.get shown properly.
