I, too, will be sorry to see this go (if it does). I also sold my Nighthawk
but have always enjoyed the back and forth between everyone and I learned a
few things too. At 75 I am still riding some when I can. It does still give
me, and I'm sure you all too, that wind in your face great feeling. Good
luck all and be safe, Wynn

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: No way the crush gaskets are coming out

2017-02-24 Thread bobcat732
Don't forget they are copper. Softer than anything else there. A little
tapping at them w/a screwdriver or pick and you most likely begin a hole in
the thing or a little break and then you can begin to pry from underneath.
Use plenty of pb or the like and they should pop out. I'd stuff a rag in
the hole just to keep out any flying junk.

if you ride a lot it's a worthy investment and if you sell, you can put the

   Nighthawk friends,

I am selling my non-running 1985 Nighthawk CB650SC in Vienna, Virginia.
It tipped over in a storm when I away for a long weekend and flooded out,
and has some issues, but a good bike for someone wanting to do a carb job
 and reassemble. The goods…..
 - I rode nearly daily for many years (commute) and no problems
 - has both side covers and a nice Sargent seat. 27,000 ish miles (see
 photo)
 - good Spitfire tires, a sissy bar I never used, nice shaft drive of the
 model

  - the price is right (just looking to clear out the garage and find it
 a good home/use)
 And the bads…..
 - non-running for a year….flooded out and now certainly gummy needing a
 carb job
 - rear red light cover is cracked (but I used it that way for years, and
I have a better one (barely cracked) as spare)
 - I've only tacked it together (pillion handle, seat, sissy bar, side
 covers)
 - some surface chrome-rust
 - several square inch area on right rear of gas tank has a marginal
paint repair (lighter color blue, visible in right side photo)
 And the quirks….
 - round mirrors vice the stock rectangular
 - the usual model/year anemic charging system and low fuel tankage.

Contact Mike Bosworth at michael dot bosworth at mac dot com or
703-864-4174. You'll need to have your own ability to haul away….I've
 got ramp planks. $200 obo.

 Gene,
I don't mean any disrespect but you are flat out wrong and spreading
misinformation... If you hook a positive up to the ground/- it will cause a
short and burn a fuse. Hooking them both together doesn't make them
brighter it just feeds over the flasher relay and causes the light to stay
on and then turn signal not to function. The voltage doesn't change the
 brightness doesn't change.

I disagree. Assuming you have the correct ground/common wire on the bulb

Put a band aid on it, dip it in vodka, etc. etc.. You could even hook up
both “hot” wires together, and have them on at the same time, but brighter!

The third wire is the wire for the always on running lights. I've been
hunting for LED 3-wire lights for quite some time, nobody seems interested
in making them. As long as you have that wire end tied off somewhere that
it can't come in contact with a ground, you'll be fine. Tape up the end,
tie it back securely, and run with two-wire lights.

 -Kurt

PS: There IS a way to make two-wire lights function as three-wire lights,
but it involves splicing power diodes into your lines, which takes a bit of
doing and some careful component selection and in most cases isn't really
 worth it, in my opinion.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] trouble with my poor 650 nighthawk

2013-01-22 Thread bobcat732
This is a problem with the two plugs from the ignition switch that mount to
the back of the fuse box. They may be beyond repair and you'll need a new
(used) switch. You may be able to get them out and clean the contacts and
be OK. be sure to use dielectric grease when reassembling. This has
happened to me twice. I'd be riding along and the bike would just shut off.
I'd reach up and wiggle the wires at the back of the fuse box and the thing
would come back to life. After replacing the switch and fuse box (in my
case, it was burned pretty well) all has been well for some time.

immediately i assumed it was the 30A fuse attached to the starter relay
 and replaced it. no good.
then i checked the battery by bridging the terminals in the relay, the
bike cranked over fine so the battery is good. [ps i put the bike on a
boost charger when i got home and affirmed the battery is good.]
next i tried to power one of the coils directly from the battery to see if
i could at least get the engine to fire those cylinders, no luck with that.
i am assuming that something is grounding the coils because of this.
i have changed every fuse in the bike that i could find [the ones behind
the headlight even though they all seem to be for lights and guages and the
30A next to the starter relay.
im left with assuming it is either something with the ignition switch or
the neutral safety switch [mostly because powering the coil from the
 battery didnt do anything].

i have a long and strong background in bikes for many years and cant for
the life of me figure this out.
has anyone experienced this problem before and can help me figure out what
 it is?
i gave up driving cars a decade ago so this is it for transportaion for

Just got off the phone with sprocketspecialists.com, and I'm looking at a
$43 delivered price on a 16T front sprocket. Pages like
 http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dautomotivefield-keywords=750+nighthawk+sprockethave
  them for $15. Gave
http://www.d2moto.com (from the bottom of the Amazon page) a call, and
that's all they carry, the stock 15T sprocket.

Anybody know where I might be able to pick up a 16T front sprocket for my
'96 750 Nighthawk for less than $43? I'm not so sure the mod is worth that
to me, especially since I've never even experienced it.

 Thanks.

Ross, where did you buy your 750 and in what part of the country? I have
a '91 750 with 8k miles on it. The bike is absolutely showroom - not a
scratch on it. I mean it, absolutely pristine. The previous owner took it
apart just to clean it. It is the smoothest idling bike I have ever heard.
I bought it for $1800 here in a small town in PA. At the advertised price
 of $2k, he didn't get a single response. I also have a 2002 750 with
Corbin seat, Honda rack and backrest, wind shield, 3k miles on it. It is
also in pristine shape. I paid $3200 for it. I have bought two other 750's
in this area in excellent condition and low miles. I forget the years.
One I bought for $1000 and the other was $900. I know what they are
advertised for on Craigslist and I know what they actually sell for. Allen
is right if she wants a decent price (ie a better price), wait till spring.
Otherwise, advertise it for $1800 and see what kind of response she gets.
That will tell you all you need to know. Here's a pic of the '91 I bought
for $1800 about two months ago, Graham

Hey guys, I had a question about some engine noise I've been hearing.
Around 2500-3500 RPM as its going down I hear a sort of rattling/whirring
noise, not so much vibrations or anything just a noise. It usually only
happens when its just warmed up (i.e after some riding it goes away
mostly). When I tried to show the mechanic I was working with, it wouldn't
make the noise, possibly because it was in neutral. Been looking online for
some ideas of what it could be and it sounds more and more to me like its
the cam chain tensioner. Is this a noise a should be concerned about?
Another question I had was I got my replacement oil pan and I want to
clean the outside and inside thoroughly, any suggestions on getting the old
gasket and residue caked up on it? The inside isn't that bad but could use
a good wipe down. I tried warm water and dish detergent with a tooth brush
lol gonna need something a bit stronger. Any suggestions?

 Thanks :)

Ok so I was replacing the front turn signal stays, while I was
 doing
that I figured I'ld poke around the wiring behind the headlight
 BIG
MISTAKE (lol at my own stupidity and impatience), I didnt disconnect
anything other than the turn signals but apparently I did something I
shouldn't have Whilst I was in there I figured why not take the
 horns
off and check the fuses, they all looked good so I stuck em back in
 exactly
how I found them as I did this one at a time (I accidently did this
 with the
bike on, not running but powered dunno if that makes a difference).
 At this
point I saw that the indicator lights under the tach and spedo weren't
turning on anymore, although the brights indicator was working. Also
 with my
luck as I was trying to screw the horns back into place I found out
 that the
right side (facing the bike) miraculously became stripped OR
 something so
now it wont hold properly :\ figure I'll get a longer screw with a
 wingnut
to lock it in place as a fix. I also almost forgot how the turn
 signal went
back in but I figured it out (as I only unplugged the 6 turn signal
 wires
for both of em). Unfortunately one of the screws that goes into the
turnsignal stay decided to get ruined somehow, so now I only have one
 of the
turn signals in for the moment until I replace the screw.

At this point I'm so frustrated with everything I just put it
 back
together and figure I'll wait until my brother gets home tomorrow (as
 he has
more experience with wiring and reading the diagram etc..). I put the
 rubber
drain plug that I got so I can ride to the place that is gonna help me
replace the oil pan without fear of oil leaking and causing me to
 wipe out.
Luckily that works and stopped the leaking even after letting it warm
 up.
Though to my dismay as I'm warming it up I find that the speedometer
 and
tachometer aren't working anymore either, I think to my self great
 it's
probably connected to the lights on the bottom as well, so I probably
 CAN
fix it when I find out what I did to make the indicator lights to stop
working. I hope Im correct in my thinking :\ Any Idea of what I
 could I've
done? Is it something I did with the fuses maybe? Or did I knock one
 of the
wires loose somehow? I'm at a loss at the moment and waiting till
 tomorrow
to attempt to figure it out. I know I must sound like an idiot, but
 hey
everyone's gotta start somewhere I right? lol

Thanks for looking and any help will, as always, be greatly
  appreciated.

manufacturer and model. They work great and are very big, I've been happy
 with them for long tours.

However - I have a NH rack and Givi trunk on my bike for daily
riding. If you want to keep them on full time I wouldn't use soft bags.
The right way, in my opinion, to put bags on your bike for long term use
is to mount hard bags. The Bestem rack is an amazing product but very
 pricey $400 (http://www.bestemusa.com/**Hond**a-Nighthawk-750-Luggage-
 **Mounti**ng-Rack-Kit-for-Bestem-**T-Box-**Mount-both-Top-and-side-**

Others have made they're own mounts for hard bags. If you have access to
the right tools and, if you're like me, maybe a friend with mechanical
talent I'd make my own. If not I think $400 for the Bestem rack is worth
the investment. Then you can mount 2 removable hard bags that will keep
everything dry and safe no matter where you go. You can also add a trunk
for maximum storage space. Somewhere in the forum is a picture of a bike
with the Bestem set-up. It has more storage than my ST1100.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Need Help / Guidance with my 1985 nighthawk 650

2012-06-07 Thread bobcat732
There is a fuse in the selenoid that's worth looking at even though it is
rarely bad. It is most likely the ignition wires at the back of the fuse
box. It happened to me several times before I really fixed it. I'd be
riding along and the bike would just shut down. I had to wiggle the wires
behind the fuse box and it would come back to life. It could be the innards
of the switch but be careful if you open it up as there are a lot of small
parts inside. You may be better off looking for a switch on ebay and
replace it.

  I have a 1982 650 Nighthawk with about 22,000 miles on it. I’ve had
the bike since 06 and it’s been great fun and way more reliable than I
deserve for a 30 year old bike.
Other than maintenance items, tires, brakes, fork oil seals, sprockets
and chain my only big issue was hitting a deer the October before
  last.

  https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Y3m6VKaRw635DLrLXZFADEacE5vr8hf...

I’ve been meaning to write for a while and accumulated a few
  questions.

  1. Center Stand – The bike has one but I cannot get it on the center
stand without help. How do you do it alone? I’m always afraid the
bike will tip away from me.

  2. Speedometer/Odometer problems - As long as I’ve had the bike the
speedometer has been pretty sketchy. Using a GPS, when I’m driving at
35 the speedometer reads 50. But the odometer was always dead on.
Same cable operating both. Now the odometer and trip odometer stopped
working at 20,947. It doesn’t appear to be at the wheel or cable so I
looking for any insight before tearing the instrument cluster apart.

  3. As you can see the bike was repainted by a PO. They did a good
job but I’m seeing the paint bubble around the tank mouth. I think in
part caused by gasoline. Last fill up after sitting out in the sun,
the fuel expanded to where it leaked out and seemed to get under the
paint softening and bubbling it. Any suggestions?

  4. Traction in the rain - I started riding again back in 2006 after a
30 year break. I find I’m a lot more tentative riding in the rain,
slow way down, very upright in corners, etc. How much traction do we
lose in the rain? 30% on wet roads, maybe 50% in puddles?

I know my age is showing, and I’m OK with that but I don’t like
getting beat in the corners by bicycles either.

  5. Sea Foam – Like everyone here, I love it. However at $9/pint it
gets pretty dear. About a year ago there was discussion and recipes
for a “home made version” that sounds like it would be about 1/5 the
cost. Has anyone ever tied it? I’m will to give it a try, (on the
lawn mower, gas trimmer, chain saw, etc. not the N’hawk) but wanted to
  know if anyone has experience.

  6. N’hawk badges - There was discussion on N’hawk badges a while
ago. Did they ever happen? Are there any around?

  7. Any bike suggestions for a 20 yr. old woman - My daughter took the
safety course and got her license last summer. However she finds the
N’hawk too tall to ride safely. She took her course on a 250 Rebel
and liked that but I’m looking for a few others we can be looking for
  as well.

Thanks for any ideas, suggestions and guidance. Ride safe.

Much as I hate to admit it, that may be something the PO actually did
right. Hondas tend to be cold-blooded (slow to warm up and run right
and a characteristic mid-throttle hesitation) because the carbs are
set purposely lean from the factory to avoid running afoul of the EPA.

A common mod to improve throttle response is to insert two Radio Shack
#4 washers under the needles, in lieu of a trial-and-error rejet. It
  improves performance throughout the range.

I won't let the PO off entirely, though. It depends on whether he
used the correct washers. I forget the exact measurements of the
washers, but I know #4 works best. Of course, if he used some other
washers out of a can he had lying around, he might still be the dufus
we've accused him of being ;-)

Anyway, #4s would only cost ya a couple bucks, and you'd know you had

and environment and that extra mental workperhaps an academic study will
investigate and deem motorcycle riding a great inhibitor of the onset of
 dementia and Alzheimers.

With each of my two 1985 CB-650SCs (regards touring, which I only do a bit
of, being more a daily commuter sort), I have an aftermarket Sargent seat
and the notoriously short range (I fill up at about 120 miles on the odo).
Absolutely not a problem in my commuting, and even in my Washington DC
centric touringI like to stretch every 120 miles or so anyways and
hydrate. It would be more of an issue in the West where I used to ride (and
sometimes do with my brother NoCal or son SoCal...we each keep two bikes
running so we can ride as a duo when one flies in for a visit).

My daily commute (Spring, Summer, FallI wimp out in winter circa
Nov/Dec till about Mar/Apr when the 0600 temperature is below 36-38

miles each direction, made up of about 10 miles of stop and go, about 8
miles of riverside parkway, and a mile of freeway. The parkway makes it
pretty fun ride, for a commute. I save quite a bit of money commuting by
motorcycle three quarters of the year, vice by automobilenot so much in
the gas though there is thatmore in the free parking, the reduced
insurance, the cheaper (mostly self) maintenance and greatly reduced number
of cold starts and warmups on the more expensive sedan (and thus extended

After paying for the motorcycles and their maintenance, I compute I save
between $2,000 and $3,000 per year in commuting costs per year (including
buydown of the acquisition costs...fairly minimal at a average of $900
each...). I spend that windfall in taking care of my horseanother fun
ride, but in the red ink, vice the black ink of the motorcycles.

I somewhat got the 2nd Nighthawk as a 'running parts bike' but the durned
machines are so reliable it seems a bit of overkillit is however
convenient to be able to have one down for a while awaiting a convenient
time to do maintenance or repair. But I'm basically keeping two for now for
the brother or son visit. Maybe someday I'll have to cannibalize one to
keep the other rolling, but so fartwo in good shape (if not cosmetically
perfectin particular I'd love to find an affordable source for the rear
brake light red plasticboth of mine are cracked and glued back
together). My main regrets with the Nighthawks I have are no ABS and
insufficient electric generating power for grip heatersand perhaps the
lack of a lockable box sufficient for a full face helmet. Someday that may
take me to a box add-on on one or perhaps another model, but not envisioned
for any time soon. But for now, I warm my hands on clod mornings on the
engine at a stoplight, avoid the deepest cold, and a tad more conservatively
than I might with ABS, and helmet lock, bungies and cord net are my friends
 for cargo.

 Hi Guys,
New to this group. Got a question for you all: how do I locate a gas
tank for my bike and how much should I expect to pay ? (Additional

 Thanks.
 Richie

 ---
I have owned this bike for while and the previous owner didn't store
the gas tank properly, so it developed rust. Over time, the rust
started to 'bubble' through the paint, so I had the tank relined. Now,
I'm facing issue with my jets getting clogged and the bike chokes at
low speeds. I've had this issue before and the mechanic told me that
it could have been rust particle clogging the jets... (This happened
around the time they started putting ethanol in gas at the stations) .
The bike had run beautifully for 2 year prior to that. So I'm
wondering if it is possible that particles from the lining material
got through and caused that this time around.
I'd hate to have the carbs cleaned only to face the same issue
again... Big assumption of course, but my mechanical skills are basic,
so I have to pay someone to clean my carbs...
That being said I'm thinking it would be cheaper to locate a decent
replacement tank than to have to clean the carbs on a regular basis,
not to mention the lining is only good for so long.
The net result is that my bike is sitting at home and I'm not enjoying
this beautiful weather. Besides, the bike is beautiful and in good
shape, so I'm trying to hold on to it...

The mechanic said he couldn't locate a tank and I checked junkyards
 local dealers: same results.
I'd appreciate any help or suggestion you can give me.
 Thanks.
 R.

 ---

PS: Unless of course this issue with the jets clogging is just another
85 NH quirk I have to live with (like the battery not charging/
draining at idle). If that the case, I'll quickly learn to clean
 synch my carbs... ;-)

 Thanks guys.

According to my local Honda dealer, there are no springs left in the Honda
inventory anywhere in the country. They have search capability nationwide I
am told. That spring was specific to only the 83-85 650sc. I have 30K on
mine and I can hear the chain rattle @3000rpm. I just try to keep the rpm's
6K or below.

 Hello all!

So winter is slowly coming to an end here in Minnesota, and that has
me thinking motorcycles. I was hoping to replace the cam chain
tensioner on my 83 650 Nighthawk, but much to my surprise Honda seems
to have discontinued the part. Obviously e-bay is an option, but I
wonder if it is worth replacing 28 year old cam chain tensioner with
another 28 year old cam chain tensioner? Anybody got a line on a new
one? Anyone had any luck on fixing the existing part?

 Thanks!
