I thought that this failure was recent, but apparently it's not (the garden most probably has libc-2.8). For 32-bit linux we try to be *very* backward compatible. For 64-bit Peter most probably has the oldest linux OS running on 64-bit processor in the community. You are the first one with something older. The problem is that either: - we need to find someone that will compile the binaries on old-enough linux - or, if you have a chance to figure out how to upgrade to something that supports at least 2.7 2.7 is quite new, and 2.8 is very new. It's just a bad luck in this particular case, but we'll solve it. c) you would need to compile the binaries for minimals on regular basis Howto do this ? Is there any guide ? Not really. Just the first line of http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_Minimals/Implementation that says svn co http://svn.contextgarden.net/minimals-src/build-binaries and then you need to run the script build-binaries (but it will fail since you don't have the rights yet). You may try to run ./update-binaries.sh first and then compile pdftex to start with (it returns warnings, but feel free to ignore them; the binary should nevertheless be there). We can create you an account, but we need to talk first just to agree on the building schedule. If it's not possible with ConTeXt minimal distro, maybe I'll go for TeXlive. (I have seen http://www.ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-devel/2009- September/008566.html) Yes, I started that thread also. It seems that the spec can be met via Ghostscript. What is also needed is the internal labeling of the file as pdf X/1-a:2001, and some xml add-ins. The prepress staff will look at the file and if it is not labeled correctly run it through Distiller, which can degrade text and barcodes by converting them to bitmaps. LSI handles hundreds of pdf cover files each week, many of which are out of spec. If it does not look like X/1-a:2001 they will bitmap it, and in the process mess it up to a degree, or so I am told. So getting the file within spec is necessary but it also has to look like it is in spec. Their Customer Service Rep specifically mentioned Ghostscript as producing non-acceptable pdf files. This is not the only hoop to be leapt through in dealing with LSI. they have a limit on total ink coverage that is more restrictive than the usual formulation for CMYK rich black. They want only %240 total coverage so I cobbled up CMYK 60,40,40,100 which adds up to 240%. In brief, they are a royal pain. But they have a near-monopoly on POD printing for bookstores in the US and their pricing for Amazon beats anyone including Amazon's own subsidy Createspace. Or perhaps there is something amiss with the way my computers are caching fonts. Sigh. Well, if your engine is pdftex (from an unpatched TeXLive 2008) then chances are you're running into the nasty (TM) font cache bug: http://www.tug.org/mactex/fontcache/ Oliver The symptoms seem right: strange, unpredictable display problems with Apple's pdf software but not Adobe's. And it's not just pdftex, apparently. They say that luatex is affected too. That's primarily what I use. So we have both known symptoms (sort of - they're vague) and an allegedly known cause. Perhaps we have a diagnosis. Here is Dick Koch, A Fix for the Corrupt Font Cache Bug http://www.tug.org/mactex/fontcache/Font-Cache-Bugfix.pdf The “corrupt font cache bug” on OS X has been traced by Melissa O’Neill to a bug in pdftex, present in that program since 2004. The incorrect code is also used in other programs, notably dvips, luatex, and metapost. … The code containing the pdftex bug was used with little change in modern versions of dvips, so fixing the bug in dvips was not difficult. However, it wasn’t so easy to find the corresponding code in luatex and metapost. Instead of waiting for decisive fixes in these programs, we decided to just release the fixed pdftex and dvips. This should fix the bug for most users. Notice that pdftex is used when typesetting in “pdftex” mode and dvips is used when typesetting in “TeX and DVI” mode. XeTeX does not have the bug. And in another document, Looking over the Debugger’s Shoulders , Koch summarizes what they discovered this way: http://www.tug.org/mactex/fontcache/Debugging.pdf Two bugs contributed to the problem. First, pdftex, dvips, luatex, and metapost were not correctly subsetting certain fonts. And second, a large number of fonts contained subroutines which did not conclude with a RETURN command. Many of these were created with the utility mmpfb, which has been patched. Question: is this still a problem for luatex 0.44? (Please say no). If not, perhaps I should clean my caches and use only MkII/XeTeX. Even then, I gather that old documents created with luatex will still be little time bombs (see Appendix, below). I guess I have to delete all pdfs made by luatex and regenerate them as needed. That's a lot of documents. Nasty is right. Oy. mjg Appendix: Koch's explanation of why the font cache might become corrupt seemingly for no reason at all. http://www.tug.org/mactex/fontcache/Font-Cache-Bugfix.pdf When GUI programs display pdf files, they call Apple’s internal pdf routines. In turn, these routines call Apple’s font routines to construct bitmaps for the outline fonts. These Apple routines store the bitmaps in a font cache to speed up future display. For reasons unknown until recently, this font cache can become corrupt; this is “triggered” by displaying a defective pdf file. After that trigger, display problems persist for all files. To fix the problem, the font cache needs to be rebuilt, as happens when the machine is rebooted. Adobe Acrobat does not use Apple’s pdf display routines, so it is immune to the bug. ... Once you install the repaired pdftex and dvips binaries, pdf files created by these programs will not contain damaged fonts and thus won’t trigger the bug. But unfortunately, your old pdf files may still be damaged. In addition, users on other platforms won’t have the repaired binaries for some time, so pdf files sent by colleagues may still be damaged and trigger the bug. That is why you may still experience the bug from time to time until the TeX world catches up. It isn’t even necessary to display an old damaged pdf file to trigger the bug, because Apple’s QuickLook software and the software in Finder which gives a miniature version of the first page in the file browser can trigger it. If you keep experiencing the bug after applying the fix, you may need to retypeset files which you often open. ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : http://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

Again, no problem: with a fea file, I can write a sub rule sub exclam by dotbelowcomb It is better to forget about fea files alltogether. Even when they actually work, the interface is ugly. but I can't combine both approaches: if the font doesn't have the character, I get an error about invalid glyph index. In good old pdftex, it was possible to define a virtual font for such occasions, and I seem to remember that there's something similar in mkiv, but I'm unsure how it can be done. Any pointers? Re: [NTG-context] mkiv vs. mkii
Hi Mika, Mika Ritola wrote: Could you explain what mode=node does? I've seen it mentioned many times but I still don't know what its purpose is. I searched the ConTeXt site (using the search box), and didn't find any other useful information on it except that it affects kerning, but how? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using it? When should you use it? Mark IV has two font processing modes, 'base' and 'node'. In base mode, the font metrics are transformed into a traditional tfm-style table, which means that all kerning and ligaturing is handled by the core luatex engine. This is very similar to the processing that takes place mkii (pdftex). Its advantage is that it is faster than node mode, but the disadvantage is that you do not have access to any of the advanced features in opentype fonts. In mode node, the font metrics is transformed into a table that has no kerning nor ligatures at all, and the kerning and ligature processing is handled by the mkiv lua code instead of the core engine. The advantage is that you can do much more advanced stuff (for example, node mode is required for on-the-fly feature changes, all non-trivial ligature replacements, and for non-latin scripts) but the disadvantage is that processing is slower. Currently mkiv defaults to base mode except for the predefined fontfeatureset 'arabic', but this may change in the future, IIRC. Heiko Oberdiek wrote the accsupp package to use ActualText in LaTeX, why shouldn't it be then possible to use it in LuaTeX (and ConTeXt)? Re: [NTG-context] overprinting
Hi Hans, hi all, I use overprinting only for the texts (not global). Most times the texts are stored in a \[h|v]box first, before they are added to the rest (offsets, background, whatever). So thinks look like this (very simplified): \setbox\Textbox\hbox{\startoverprint Some text.\stopoverprint} Overprinting should be activated only inside of this box. Sadly mkiv adds this attribute to most of the graphics with text. The first graphics is always OK, but the following graphics are overprinted as a whole. I have compared the pdf of pdftex and luatex and the main difference is, that luatex 'optimizes' the overprinted texts by *grouping* them. Instead of two or more independent areas (one /GSoverprint ... /GSknockout for every text), like in mkii, % pdftex % /GSoverprint gs % text 1 BT /Fm?? first overprinted text ... /GSknockout gs /GSoverprint gs % text 2 BT /Fm?? second overprinted text ... /GSknockout gs % I get % luatex % /GSoverprint gs % text 1 and 2 BT /Fm?? first overprinted text ... /Fm?? second overprinted text ... /GSknockout gs % This is right from the point of overprinting, but the texts are still part of different graphics (rendering is done at different times). I guess this somehow corrupts the grouping. The first graphic in such a group is always OK, all following graphics are overprinted as a whole. I have tested this with more than two graphics (resulting in two multiple groups) and I get the same effect. No minimal yet. Any thoughts? Best wishes, Peter Hans Hagen schrieb: Peter Rolf wrote: Hans Hagen schrieb: Peter Rolf wrote: first tests show that there are still scope problems in mkiv (e.g. a complete button is set to overprint instead of the text only). no clue yet, but i'm working on it... sure, as overprint is not aware of any content so you need to use knockout then mh, isn't \stopoverprint enabling knockout automatically? or do i need a \ExtGState entry with knockout at the document level? just started reading in the pdf reference manual... it depends ... we have none: no entry at all, knockout: some nil entry, overprint: special entry the thing is that when we have globally overprint on, we need s local knockout : \startoverprint ... \bgroup ... \startknockout ... \stopknockout ... \egroup ... \stopoverprint is nicer than \startoverprint ... \bgroup ... \stopoverprint ... \startoverprint ... \egroup ... \stopoverprint Hans - Hans Hagen | PRAGMA ADE Ridderstraat 27 | 8061 GH Hasselt | The Netherlands tel: 038 477 53 69 | fax: 038 477 53 74 | www.pragma-ade.com | www.pragma-pod.nl - ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___ ___ If your question is of interest to others as well, please add an entry to the Wiki! maillist : ntg-context@ntg.nl / http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context webpage : http://www.pragma-ade.nl / http://tex.aanhet.net archive : https://foundry.supelec.fr/projects/contextrev/ wiki : http://contextgarden.net ___

But I installed ConTeXt from a copy of what Mari had on her portable (this brings other questions, later); so it works for now. But still in the error file, looking at lines 97-98 and 99-100, for example, what is the installation program changing in my mikTeX installation? --- Now for the working installation. 1) As it was taken from Mari machine, isn't there possible problems with parameters from her machine which are not the same on mine? 2) How can update and/or create new formats? I am using ConTeXt with TeXworks; I did install a full copy of TeXworks (programs and dlls) in C:\Programmes\ConTeXt\texmf-context\context\data\texworks and I issue the setuptex.bat command before to start the ConTeXt TeXworks. Just a typo. The map-files in my/the TeX-tree resides in texmf-local/fonts/map/pdftex/context/(the-map-file) In MKII it was functioning from there.
