[NTG-context] [mkiv] \setupfootnotes[n=2] not working properly
When using columns in footnotes, the line length is not adjusted.
Instead, they have the same length as if there where only one column
(like in the normal setup).
This works like it should in context-online (wich uses mkii, I suppose).
Please make it work in mkiv, too.

[NTG-context] newbie questions
Hi ConTeXt community. While looking for free (preferably open-source) tools which I could use for typesetting a planned internal newsletter-booklet for a non-profit organization (to be released in printed form in regular intervals - each issue with new content of course, but same/similar style), I came across ConTeXt. I usually use Inkscape and various WYSIWYG word processing software for designing and layouting flyers/leaflets/etc., but in this case (many pages, varying and regularly updated content, consistent style) I'm afraid those tools simply don't cut in in terms of professional-quality typesetting capabilities and content//style separation. So programmatic typesetting might be the answer. I thought of LaTeX first, but I read from various sources that using ConTeXt might be easier for typesetting book-like things, especially if you want to design your own styles. Before I delve in deeper, though, I would like to ask you (the ConTeXt community) some questions: a) Is the ConTeXt project alive? The newest PDF documentation I could find seems to be from 2007; most of it is dated 2003 or older. b) Do you think that ConTeXt is an appropriate tool for the use case I described (be honest please ;-)), and easy enough to learn for someone with almost no TeX experience? The requirements are: - Support for elaborate, colorful, graphics-heavy design, which I would preferably create in Inkscape and then export as vector graphics (or port to ConTeXt's own graphics language) as necessary. - Ability to write a style *once* (with reasonable effort), and outsource it to an external file (or files), so that for each new release of the newsletter, only a simple content TeX file (or files) with minimal amount of markup is required (which e.g. even a non-tech-savvy writer/editor could edit) - Ability to easily include pictures in the content, and let the typesetting engine automatically position them (either in the main text area with text floating around them, or in special margin areas). c) Are there any full-featured examples of design-heavy booklets/magazines/etc created with ConTeXt., for which the full source code is publicly available? That would be *really* helpful in order to assess how much work would be required, and also to learn how exactly it's done in practice. Thanks! Hello, in my doublesided document \inmargin texts are always on the left side of the body text. \inmargin is configures to be always in the left margin, you can use \inothermargin to put the text in the opposite margin or use \inoutermargin to put the text always in the outer margin or you can configure \inmargin to be always in the outer margin \inothermargin gives Undefined control sequence \inoutermargin works great! \setupmargindata[inmargin][location=outer,align=inner] Hm, tried that. The margin text did move to the outer margin, but it was aligned to the paper boarder, not to the body text. (i.e. it was set ragged left/flush right on an odd page) Also, is \setupinmargindata equivalent to the old \setupinmargin? I could not find any documentation about it. [NTG-context] Footnotes set in columns have no line break
Hello,
I want my footnotes in columns, but there is apparently no line breaking
going on (text from the first column is overlapping the second and so on).
Example:
\setupfootnotes[n=2]
\starttext
\dorecurse{6}{\input hawking\footnote{Nevertheless, if the exponential
growth continued, there would be ten.}}
\stoptext
This DOES give the desired output in the online context thingy (i.e MkII),
but not my win32 minimals installation with MkIV.

[NTG-context] Footnotes: Individual number styles
Sorry to bother again, but how do I change the style of the footnote number that is IN THE TEXT. Not the ones under the line, I can manipulate those with numbercommand. Let's just say I want a normal serif body text, but the footnote numbers are sans serif (or red, if you will) To clarify: This is the main² text. The little two after main wants to be painted red. Here comes more text... __ ² This two down here does not want to be red. In MKII \sc switch to a different font but MKIV can just enable the smcp
feature.
Adding smcp=yes doesn't work as option for \setmainfont because you
can use \definfontfeature and overload the default set, the only valid
options from \definefontfeature are script, expansion and
protrusion.

Ok, let's leave the small capitals with \sc alone, they work when I specify
script=latin in setmainfont.
Now, how would I activate the feature c2sc (small capitals from capitals)?
It worked like this in the past, but does not anymore:

\setmainfont[Minion Pro][expansion=quality, protrusion=quality,

font feature. I guess it's because \sc is a standard (la)tex style switch like
\it.
BUT:
Defining (or at least using) the other font feature (c2sc) does not work, and
since (to my knowledge) there is no style like \sc for that in tex,
we have to define it using the font feature.
If , like Bernhard wrote, \addff is broken, that would affect also features
like 'sups', 'dlig' and so on.

sorry for the noise, indeed cmr have no smallcaps, but initially i used a
adobe
font for testing and here it didn´t work. It seems oldstyle and smallcaps
fontfeature is not defined in the source anymore, so i had to define it myself
and now all is ok.

could it be that in the latest beta (ConTeXt ver: 2011.03.30 11:21 MKIV)
the font feature 'small capitals' is broken?
Can someone who has Minion Pro test this, please?

[NTG-context] chapter and section titles in margin of each page
Hello,
this is nice:

However, the text in the margin has not the same interlinespace as the main
text and that looks weird.

The only solution I came up with is using \framed:

The drawback seems to be that with this, I can not use \raised , so I have
to enlarge the frame (It says A box is expected here when I try to raise

Hello, I recently started using context. I migrated from latex to xelatex to context. Mainly because of the better font support. I now value context also for its superior abilities. I feel that I can do more stuff without the use of \usepackage for this, \usepackage for that. When I read the documentation, I get the feeling that a lot of thoughts went into the options that are presented but it's still easy to customize (if you know how to do it :D) Here is my input to your questions. 1) why users are confused with mkiv/mkii? The difference is not well explained. Also, mkii (which I don't use) sounds like the old version. When I first read about context, it was like well, we have this and that (mkii and mkiv) but it should say we have mkii, [insert here: what can it do, for what users is it recommended, pros/cons] and mkiv [insert info]. If you are not sure what to use, then you should use mkiv, because that is the future. Or something like that. 2) why they my be reluctant to install the minimals? Because they already have it in miktex, texlive. What they don't know is that these versions are outdated and due to the heavy development pretty far behind. Plus, it should say Context Standalone because that is what it is. 3) how to restructure the garden to make things clearer for newcomers? I for one would welcome to see more guides like the titles guide. Nicely commented and explained code, result as picture. For better structure it would be an option to use code blocks that can be hidden, with a small [+] in front that you can click to see the code. 4) how do users look for information and how to optimise the garden for search engine requests? I read the manual section, if that does not answer it, I google what I want context. Most of the time that takes me to the mail archive. 5) how to better promote context to new/latex users? Maybe link to a new page: Differences between miiv/mkii and how both are invoked (context vs. texexec). Then I am aware of many people who are reluctant to install the minimals. I now wonder why I (myself) was unwilling to install the minimals in the first place, having TeXLive installed already. For one it was because of the extra effort. But I recall it was also the name The ConTeXt MINIMAL distribution that kept me. The name minimal somehow suggested something incomplete or minor to me. It took me a while to figure out that the minimals is actually more than you get from TexLive. Therefore, I would suggest leaving out minimal and advertise the superior instead. But of course you're also right that it's frustrating for users if they can't find relevant information for the areas where the two differ. As long as mkiv hasn't settled, this is not easy... In deed. I guess this has most relevance for people new to context, especially those who know latex already and are used to find help easily. We should add criterium=cite and criterium=text to the Wiki (Bibliography MKIV page: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Bibliography_mkiv). Seems like a good idea, but it's harder than it sounds. Here is what I tried: -Load MnSymbol12 in FontForge -Run the script (by Florian, see email from 20. Feb 2011) -Merge in Minion Pro (all of it :D ) -Generate OTF ...but the font (I also renamed it to be sure) does not show up in the output. Instead LM-Math is used. Of cause you cannot redistribute the new font but you could distribute a fontforge script which does the merge. This way you could create an OpenType Math font with greek already in the right slots. Maybe also merge with Cronos to get sans math into the font. Good evening, How can I place left aligned and centered text on one line? The tabulate solution is always a tad off. There is a DruTeX module already in place but that, so far as I can tell, it is limited to LaTeX. Thanks, Otared. We have asked the same question, I see. My aim is to facilitate online collaboration (e.g., annotation/translation and a technical text in Greek, say). It would be great if there were a way to develop the translation using ConTeXt. The DruTeX module is promising, but it’s not ConTeXt. described procedure allow the usage like in the attached example? It's done
with latex and the minion package. Looks beautiful to me (except maybe some
small scaling issues with the big '(' ) Sorry for the crappy screenshot, the
64k-Limit blocked attaching the one page 200k PDF.
As a side note: Is mathdesign available for context? I remember reading
about it somewhere, but the third-party module site has nothing listed.
Also: the 64K-Limit is a pain in the ass. Had to try 4 times to get it out

I installed the URW-Garamond manually from CTAN and now it's working. Some
minor troubles like too much italic (brackets and numbers in math mode are
italic O_o) but it's a start.

[NTG-context] MnSymbol in ConText
Hello List, hello Wolfgang, I was google-ing how to use MnSymbol with context an (only) found an old mail from late '09 where you said you'd have to figure out how to use the greek letters from the text font. Any progress on that? Is there any way to use MnSymbol in context? If not, does someone know a decent alternative? And why does it work in Latex? Please tell me it's possible, I don't want to go back to Latex, context is much cooler. I have a strange problem in one of my documents.
When I uncomment the line with \setupalign[hz,hanging] everything works
fine. When I use it, I get this error because of a verbatim typing segment:

I'working on Windows 7 32bit and updated Context Minimals before testing.
@Wolfgang: I included the options because ConTeXt was using the
condensed-italic font instead of the italic font. That occurs only if one
has both variants installed.

How can I do this?

Mojca— texmf-osx-intel reappears when the minimals are updated removing status-of-update.lua did not make a difference (I am using MKII). I have not installed TeXLive. Mocja— I can process files from the command line. The problem seems to be with TeXShop (which I suspect needs some updating for Snow Leopard). Reinstalling TeXShop does not help. Thanks to Otared and Dick Koch, I now have MKII up and running again. The primary change in TeXshop involved setting the path in Preferences/Engine to /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin. for the MKII engine, Otared suggested #!/bin/bash source /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex texexec $1 What would be best for the MKIV and XeTeX engines? I have just installed the latest beta (minimals) and updated my .bash_profile (as advised) so that it now reads: . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin When I try to compile any file, I get: FatalError : Your format does not match the base files! FormatVersion : 2009.11.26 16:28 MKII FilesVersion: 2009.12.01 00:14 How do I fix this? (texexec --make --all did not do the trick.) If I change my .bash_profile to . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin as suggested in When you want to use context, you need to initialize the tree by typing: . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex in your shell or add /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin to PATH variable if you want to set it permanently. This can usually be done in .bashrc, .bash_profile (or whatever file is used to initialize your shell). I get the error message The argument /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin is not a valid TEXROOT path. Hi Alan, If you are running Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later, the right folder (or directory) is ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin In any case you can test this just by changing the name of either of the folders and try to typeset a file (you can change the name of the folder for example in the Finder). Do you use TeXShop or any other GUI application? A last point: at the beginning of the ConTeXt minimals, at one point I installed the minimals in the /Application/ folder (directory) but had constantly problems due to the rights of writing and executing, I think. Now I have the Minimals in another place and everything works fine. Good luck! Please excuse my persistence. The following is a minimal file illustrating a
problem that I am having with a multipage table with local footnotes. Setting
split=yes or split=repeat in \setuptables produces obviously unsatisfactory
results. What I need is a multipage table that has good page divisions and puts
the table's label on the last page only. I have been unable to find
documentation that would help with this yet.
I am using MK2 in today’s Context in the Context Minimals.

I am having a problem placing local footnotes in a table using\placelegend.
The attached file will compile only if I comment out
(a) header=2pc in \setuplayout
or
(b) \setupbodyfont[lmodern,rm,10.5pt]
or
(c) \placelegend
or
(d) \dorecurse{3}{\input knuth}
I am stumped as to why this should be so. There is obviously something that I
am just not seeing.
I am running MK2 using the latest beta in the ConTeXt Minimals.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

“\localgrk” is a typo.
The diaeresis command “ ” runs afoul of TeXShop and its eagerness to
present open and closing quotation marks whenever one types . I will
have to look into this: it is not an obvious preference setting.
The lack of a sublinear dot in GreekDioxipe is a pain, since it is the
font that I am currently using for Aestimatio and I need to keep it
for the present volume. I will change it for the next volume. In the
meantime, I will have to resort to my kludge.

This has never worked with this particular font because it doesn't
have a sublinear dot. I get the expected output with a font which
does have it, e.g. GreekGentium. (Btw, localgrk is not a know
command.)

A good idea. Thanks. I do not have LaTeX installed (only the ConTeXt
Minimals) but I can use Acrobat Pro to capture the Chinese characters
and take it from there. The result is not bad---the first character is
not as clear as it might be if it were actually generated using ConTeXt.

I currently have a document in which there are numerous tables each
with local footnotes marked by alphabetic characters. When I process
the file, I get complaints like:

Is there a way to reset the localfootnote counter so that ConTeXt is
happy and the footnotes marked by arabic numerals are undisturbed.
Something like \resetnumber[localfootnotes] perhaps, though this does
not work.
