Hi all,

I have had some printing problems lately, and it is not perfectly
clear to me (or to Hans, we have discussed this a bit) whether it is
the printer that has a lack of memory or if the pdf files are somehow
corrupted. It might have to do with type3 fonts.

I attach a pdf file that does not print on our printer at work. Or
well, it prints almost all of the page, but stops at the word
"negativa" (or was it "egenvärden", I do not have the printout here
right now). Then the printer also prints an error report about some
"offending command".

So, a request: If you have an easy access to a printer, can you print
this page and report back if all of it comes out, or what is
happening?

[NTG-context] newbie questions

2011-05-31 Thread Sanja C.
Hi ConTeXt community.

While looking for free (preferably open-source) tools which I could use for
typesetting a planned internal newsletter-booklet for a non-profit organization
(to be released in printed form in regular intervals - each issue with new
content of course, but same/similar style), I came across ConTeXt.

I usually use Inkscape and various WYSIWYG word processing software for
designing and layouting flyers/leaflets/etc., but in this case (many pages,
varying and regularly updated content, consistent style) I'm afraid those tools
simply don't cut in in terms of professional-quality typesetting capabilities
and content//style separation.

So programmatic typesetting might be the answer. I thought of LaTeX first, but
I
read from various sources that using ConTeXt might be easier for typesetting
book-like things, especially if you want to design your own styles.

Before I delve in deeper, though, I would like to ask you (the ConTeXt
community) some questions:

a) Is the ConTeXt project alive? The newest PDF documentation I could find
seems
to be from 2007; most of it is dated 2003 or older.

b) Do you think that ConTeXt is an appropriate tool for the use case I
described
(be honest please ;-)), and easy enough to learn for someone with almost no TeX
experience?
The requirements are:
  - Support for elaborate, colorful, graphics-heavy design, which I would
preferably create in Inkscape and then export as vector graphics (or port to
ConTeXt's own graphics language) as necessary.
 - Ability to write a style *once* (with reasonable effort), and outsource it
to an external file (or files), so that for each new release of the newsletter,
only a simple content TeX file (or files) with minimal amount of markup is
required (which e.g. even a non-tech-savvy writer/editor could edit)
 - Ability to easily include pictures in the content, and let the typesetting
engine automatically position them (either in the main text area with text
floating around them, or in special margin areas).

c) Are there any full-featured examples of design-heavy booklets/magazines/etc
created with ConTeXt., for which the full source code is publicly available?
That would be *really* helpful in order to assess how much work would be
required, and also to learn how exactly it's done in practice.

Thanks!

  Sanja C.

Re: [NTG-context] Margin text in doublesided documents

2011-04-05 Thread C.
  Hello,

in my doublesided document \inmargin texts are always on the left side
  of the body text.

\inmargin is configures to be always in the left margin, you can use
\inothermargin to put the text in the opposite margin or use
\inoutermargin
to put the text always in the outer margin or you can configure \inmargin
to
be always in the outer margin

\inothermargin gives Undefined control sequence
\inoutermargin works great!

 \setupmargindata[inmargin][location=outer,align=inner]

Hm, tried that. The margin text did move to the outer margin, but it was
aligned to the paper boarder, not to the body text. (i.e. it was set ragged
left/flush right on an odd page)

Also, is \setupinmargindata equivalent to the old \setupinmargin? I
could not find any documentation about it.

Because the command is new and nobody documented it so far.

I see.

Thank you for your reply and have a nice day.

Christian

Re: [NTG-context] Margin text in doublesided documents

2011-04-05 Thread C.
I will remember to include a minimal example from now on.
Here is the current:

\setuplayout[location=doublesided]
\setuppagenumbering[location=right,alternative=doublesided]
\setupmargindata[inmargin][location=outer,align=inner] % almost correct. on
odd pages wrong alignment
% \setupmarginframed[inmargin][align=inner] % wrong side on odd pages, also
wrong alignment
\starttext
\chapter{Chapter Knuth testing}
\section{Section Knuth testing}
\input knuth \inmargin{test}\input knuth\page
\section{Section Knuth testing 2}
bla bla \inmargin{test 1.5}bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla.
\dorecurse{5}{\input knuth}Nochmal \inmargin{test 2}ein
Test.\dorecurse{5}{\input knuth}\inmargin{bla}
\stoptext

Note: \inoutermargin on page 3 behaves correctly, though it seems to have a
different default style (why bold, anyway?).
As for now, I'm using \inoutermargin .

[NTG-context] Footnotes set in columns have no line break

2011-04-05 Thread C.
Hello,
I want my footnotes in columns, but there is apparently no line breaking
going on (text from the first column is overlapping the second and so on).

Example:

\setupfootnotes[n=2]
\starttext
\dorecurse{6}{\input hawking\footnote{Nevertheless, if the exponential
growth continued, there would be ten.}}
\stoptext

This DOES give the desired output in the online context thingy (i.e MkII),
but not my win32 minimals installation with MkIV.

Let's just say I want a normal serif body text, but the footnote numbers are
sans serif (or red, if you will)
To clarify:

This is the main² text. The little two after main wants to be painted red.
Here comes more text...

² This two down here does not want to be red.

Re: [NTG-context] Small capitals broken in latest beta?

2011-04-04 Thread C.
In MKII \sc switch to a different font but MKIV can just enable the smcp
 feature.

Adding smcp=yes doesn't work as option for \setmainfont because you
can use \definfontfeature and overload the default set, the only valid
options from \definefontfeature are script, expansion and
protrusion.

[I'm using MKiV.]
Ok, let's leave the small capitals with \sc alone, they work when I specify
script=latin in setmainfont.
Now, how would I activate the feature c2sc (small capitals from capitals)?
It worked like this in the past, but does not anymore:

\usemodule[simplefonts]
\definefontfeature[c2sc][default][c2sc=yes]
\setmainfont[Minion Pro][expansion=quality, protrusion=quality,
script=latin]
\starttext
{\addff{c2sc} THIS TEXT SHOULD BE CONVERTED TO SMALL CAPS.} % does not
result in small caps, what's wrong???
Compare: {\sc small caps} % does give small caps (therefore, not part of my
question)

Re: [NTG-context] Small capitals broken in latest beta?

2011-04-03 Thread C.
Wolfgang, your solution works for the small caps, even without defining the
font feature. I guess it's because \sc is a standard (la)tex style switch like
\it.

BUT:
Defining (or at least using) the other font feature (c2sc) does not work, and
since (to my knowledge) there is no style like \sc for that in tex,
we have to define it using the font feature.
If , like Bernhard wrote, \addff is broken, that would affect also features
like 'sups', 'dlig' and so on.

 Hi all,

sorry for the noise, indeed cmr have no smallcaps, but initially i used a
 adobe
font for testing and here it didn´t work. It seems oldstyle and smallcaps
fontfeature is not defined in the source anymore, so i had to define it myself
 and now all is ok.

Wolfgang, your solution works for the small caps, even without
defining the font feature. I guess it's because \sc is a standard (la)tex

 switch like \it.

   BUT:
Defining (or at least using) the other font feature (c2sc) does not
work, and since (to my knowledge) there is no style like \sc for that in tex,
we have to define it using the font feature.
If , like Bernhard wrote, \addff is broken, that would affect also
features like 'sups', 'dlig' and so on.

[NTG-context] Small capitals broken in latest beta?

2011-04-01 Thread C.
Hello,
could it be that in the latest beta (ConTeXt ver: 2011.03.30 11:21 MKIV)
the font feature 'small capitals' is broken?

Can someone who has Minion Pro test this, please?
I'm using

\usemodule[simplefonts]
\definefontfeature[smcp][default][smcp=yes]
\def\sc{\addff{smcp}}
\definefontfeature[allc][default][smcp=yes,c2sc=yes]
\def\allc{\addff{allc}}
\setmainfont[Minion Pro][expansion=quality, protrusion=quality]

\starttext
{\sc Test}

\stoptext

No small capitals :(

[NTG-context] chapter and section titles in margin of each page

2011-03-31 Thread C.
Hello,

this is nice:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Headers_and_Footers#Marginal_headings_and_cent
ered_headings
However, the text in the margin has not the same interlinespace as the main
text and that looks weird.
See http://i52.tinypic.com/91rc.png
The only solution I came up with is using \framed:

\startsetups[text a]
\framed[align=flushleft,
height=24\lineheight,
width=\rightmarginwidth,
frame=off
]
{\getmarking[section]}
\stopsetups

The drawback seems to be that with this, I can not use \raised , so I have
to enlarge the frame (It says A box is expected here when I try to raise
the frame).

Is there a better solution?

P.S: Bonus points: Align baselines of margin text and main text.

Re: [NTG-context] Ideas for restructuring the ConTeXt garden?

2011-03-12 Thread C.
Hello,

I recently started using context. I migrated from latex to xelatex to
context. Mainly because of the better font support. I now value context also
for its superior abilities. I feel that I can do more stuff without the use
of \usepackage for this, \usepackage for that. When I read the
documentation, I get the feeling that a lot of thoughts went into the
options that are presented but it's still easy to customize (if you know how
to do it :D)
Here is my input to your questions.

1) why users are confused with mkiv/mkii?
The difference is not well explained. Also, mkii (which I don't use) sounds
like the old version. When I first read about context, it was like well,
we have this and that (mkii and mkiv) but it should say we have mkii,
[insert here: what can it do, for what users is it recommended, pros/cons]
and mkiv [insert info]. If you are not sure what to use, then you should use
mkiv, because that is the future. Or something like that.

2) why they my be reluctant to install the minimals?
Because they already have it in miktex, texlive. What they don't know is
that these versions are outdated and due to the heavy development pretty
far behind. Plus, it should say Context Standalone because that is what it
is.

3) how to restructure the garden to make things clearer for newcomers?
I for one would welcome to see more guides like the titles guide. Nicely
commented and explained code, result as picture. For better structure it
would be an option to use code blocks that can be hidden, with a small [+]
in front that you can click to see the code.

4) how do users look for information and how to optimise the garden for
search engine requests?
I read the manual section, if that does not answer it, I google what I
want context. Most of the time that takes me to the mail archive.

5) how to better promote context to new/latex users?
I don't know.

Maybe that helps.

Maybe we should start a discussion in a new thread to find out:

 1) why users are confused with mkiv/mkii?
 2) why they my be reluctant to install the minimals?
 3) how to restructure the garden to make things clearer for newcomers?
 4) how do users look for information and how to optimise the garden for
 search engine requests?
 5) how to better promote context to new/latex users?

Especially answers from new users to the first three points would be
helpful
to answer the fifth point I guess.

In general I find it difficult to differentiate between mkiv and mkii
related
information in the wiki. How could we better structure the wiki to make it
easier for the reader? Disambiguation pages, mkiv/mkii sections,
independent pages with mkiv/mkii in headerline?
Just my 2 cents on this: difficult, because you won't be able to make
everybody happy. Every now and then, I see a new user on the list who asks
about installing mkiv and doesn't realize that it is not really
something
which you have to install additionally. We shouldn't scare those users
because in so many cases, mkii and mkiv are exactly identical, so that
would
be an arguments against a too stric separation.

 I understand the problem.

Having said that, pages like Using Mark IV or Install Mark IV should
be
 renamed to installing/using context.

Maybe it would help to include a little box important things to know on
the
installation page and explain shortly that for historical reasons mkii and
mkiv
are distributed together and that the former is regarded deprecated.
Maybe
link to a new page: Differences between miiv/mkii and how both are invoked
 (context vs. texexec).

Then I am aware of many people who are reluctant to install the minimals.
I
now wonder why I (myself) was unwilling to install the minimals in the
first
place, having TeXLive installed already. For one it was because of the
extra
effort. But I recall it was also the name The ConTeXt MINIMAL
distribution
that kept me. The name minimal somehow suggested something
incomplete or minor to me. It took me a while to figure out that the
minimals
is actually more than you get from TexLive. Therefore, I would suggest
leaving out minimal and advertise the superior instead.

But of course you're also right that it's frustrating for users if they
can't find
relevant information for the areas where the two differ. As long as mkiv
hasn't settled, this is not easy...

In deed. I guess this has most relevance for people new to context,
especially those who know latex already and are used to find help easily.

We should add criterium=cite and criterium=text to the Wiki
(Bibliography
 MKIV page: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Bibliography_mkiv).

You are of course right, but I assume Hans is working on bibliographies

-Load MnSymbol12 in FontForge
-Run the script (by Florian, see email from 20. Feb 2011)
-Merge in Minion Pro (all of it :D )

the symbols aren’t the problem, what’s difficult is greek because the
greek
letters are taken from minion pro (the text font) and not from a special
math
font and this is where it gets tricky

Why not just merge Minion with MnSymbol and create a new font if
virtualisation is tricky? Of cause you cannot redistribute the new font
but you
could distribute a fontforge script which does the merge. This way you
could
create an OpenType Math font with greek already in the right slots. Maybe
also merge with Cronos to get sans math into the font.

[NTG-context] Left and centered text on the same line

2011-03-05 Thread C.
Good evening,

How can I place left aligned and centered text on one line?

So that the centered text is in the same place as with \startaligned[middle]

I experimented with the following code:

\startalignment[middle]

I'm centered % this serves as a reference, its right in the middle of the
paper

\stopalignment

% now to the tricky part

\starttabulate[|lw(\dimexpr 0.5\textwidth\relax)|c|]

\NC I'm left \NC I'm centered \NC \NR

\NC I'm also left \NC I'm also centered \NC \NR

\stoptabulate

I tried various versions with the dimensions, subtracting \leftmarginwidth
and what not. to no avail.

The tabulate solution is always a tad off. What am I missing here?

Thanks, Otared. We have asked the same question, I see.

Re: [NTG-context] MnSymbol in ConText

2011-02-23 Thread C.
Ok, that explains why context is literally ignoring the font. But will the
described procedure allow the usage like in the attached example? It's done
with latex and the minion package. Looks beautiful to me (except maybe some
small scaling issues with the big '(' ) Sorry for the crappy screenshot, the
64k-Limit blocked attaching the one page 200k PDF.

As a side note: Is mathdesign available for context? I remember reading
about it somewhere, but the third-party module site has nothing listed.
Also: the 64K-Limit is a pain in the ass. Had to try 4 times to get it out
:(

You can use Dropbox are any other service to provide large files.

True, that's a workaround. But those who read the archive may find expired
links.

I made a package [1] with all necessary font files a while ago but it’s
Mojcas
job to include them in the minimals. The typescripts are already part of
 context.

Thank you very much.
I installed the URW-Garamond manually from CTAN and now it's working. Some
minor troubles like too much italic (brackets and numbers in math mode are
italic O_o) but it's a start.

I see.
So from your and all the other responses I take that matching math font for
Minion is not available until
(I) Minion Math supports ConTeXt (= commercial?!)
(II) Somebody ports MnSymbol files to ConTeXt

Possible - yes, available right now - no.
Sadly, I do not have the necessary skill to do (II).
Oh well...

I guess many. (Out of those who use ConTeXt for any math at all which is a
 small enough group itself.)

Alternatives are only commercial Cambria and Lucida (which don't ship by
default), palatino, times (both ugly to me), Antykwa Torunska (not suitable
for serious documents), Euler, MnSymbol lacks ConTeXt support ... (maybe I
 forgot a few).

This doesn't give you much choice for math font. (But it is also not too
 relevant in this context.)

[NTG-context] MnSymbol in ConText

2011-02-18 Thread C.
Hello List,

hello Wolfgang,

I was google-ing how to use MnSymbol with context an (only) found an old
mail from late '09 where you said you'd have to figure out how to use the
greek letters from the text font. Any progress on that? Is there any way to
use MnSymbol in context?

If not, does someone know a decent alternative? And why does it work in
Latex?

Please tell me it's possible, I don't want to go back to Latex, context is
much cooler.

Greetings

Christian

[NTG-context] \setupalign[hz,hanging] breaks verbatim text

2011-02-16 Thread C.
I have a strange problem in one of my documents.
When I uncomment the line with \setupalign[hz,hanging] everything works
fine. When I use it, I get this error because of a verbatim typing segment:

\obeyedline -\par

\doverbatimendofline -\dostoptagged \obeyedline
 \par \ifconditional
\verbat...
l.10 \dodisplayverbatimstop

\ctxcommand ...\directlua \zerocount {commands.#1}

  \dostoptagged
\endofverbat...
l.71 \stoptyping

! == Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!
mtx-context | fatal error: return code: 1

Here is the troublemaker:
\starttyping
test;
äüöAR \test \Context
\stoptyping

Interestingly I was not able to produce a real minimal example, because when
I remove everything except these lines, it’s working fine again. So there
has to be at least some lines of text to break stuff. Oh yeah, and it seems
that using simplefonts and Minion also plays a role.
Can somebody have a look at this, please? The attached file like it is does
not compile here.

[NTG-context] numbered subitems revisited

2010-08-31 Thread Bowen Alan C.
Several iterations of MK2 ago (in 2007), I was able to produce:

1. History
1.1 Pre-Greek (Babylonian and Egyptian) sundials
1.2 Greek and Roman sundials
1.3 Byzantine sundials
2. Catalog (descriptions with photos, rough dating, evaluation)
2.1 The Tower of the Winds and its sundials, treated separately
2.2 General remarks on the cataloguing of the other finds
2.3 Catalogue of the remaining finds on the Greek mainland and
the Peloponnesus
3. Analysis
3.1 Methodological remarks on the mathematical tools for analysis,
and on their status
3.2 Documentation of the results of the mathematical analysis of
the measurements, comparison with other evaluations

using the following code (thanks to Aditya):

\setupitemize[1][fit,broad]
\setupitemize[2][width=2em]
\setupitemize[each][n]

\def\checkforrepeatedlistitem
 {\ifnum\itemlevel=\plusone
 \initializeboxstack{item}%
 \fi
 \ifconditional\repeatlistitem
 \savebox{item}{\itemlevel}{\hbox{\copy8}}%
 \setbox8\hbox %to \wd8
 {\setbox\scratchbox\hbox
 {\scratchcounter\itemlevel
 \advance\scratchcounter\minusone
 \dorecurse\scratchcounter{\foundbox{item}{\recurselevel}}}%
 \ifnum\itemlevel\plusone
 \ifdim\wd\scratchbox\zeropoint
 %\hskip-\dimen2
 \box\scratchbox
 \fi
 \fi
 \box8 }%
 \fi}

\startitemize[repeat,serried, joinedup]
 \item History
\startitemize[width=1.75em, stopper={}]
\item Pre{-}Greek (Babylonian and Egyptian) sundials
 \item Greek and Roman sundials
\item Byzantine sundials
\stopitemize
\item Catalog (descriptions with photos, rough dating, evaluation)
\startitemize[width=1.75em, stopper={}]
\item The Tower of the Winds and its sundials, treated separately
\item General remarks on the cataloguing of the other finds
\item Catalogue of the remaining finds on the Greek mainland and the
Peloponnesus
\stopitemize
 \item Analysis
\startitemize[width=1.75em, stopper={}]
\item Methodological remarks on the mathematical tools for analysis,
and on their status
\item Documentation of the results of the mathematical analysis of the
measurements,
comparison with other evaluations
\stopitemize
\stopitemize

But using 2010.08.06 22 of the minimals, I now get:

! Undefined control sequence.
\checkforrepeatedlistitem -\ifnum \itemlevel
  =\plusone \initializeboxstack ...

\dolistitem ...rutdepth \checkforrepeatedlistitem
  \ifdim \dimen 2\zeropoint...

\complexdoitemgroupitem ...obreak \fi \dolistitem
  \relax \ifconditional \pac...
to be read again
   H
l.30 \item H
 istory

The redefinition of \checkforrepeatedlistitem was necessary because “serried”
ruined the indentation of the subitems.

Is there a fix for this?

Alan

I have some local footnotes (conversion = character) and would like to set the
counter to a specific value other than “a”. How can I do this?

Otared,

This works perfectly. In all the changes to ConTeXt, I had neglected to update
my TeXShop settings. Many thanks for your help (and patience).

 Hi Alan,

You have to add a .engine file to
 ~/Library/TeXShop/Engines

and open again TeXShop. For instance I have a file called mkii.engine
containing these lines (between %%%begin and %%%end of course!):
 %%% begin
 #!/bin/bash

 source /Volumes/OK/context-minimal/tex/setuptex
 texexec $1
 %%%end

and then in TeXShop by default the engine is chosen to be mkii. It is
important to know that this file must have the x bit as its rights.
In your case this mkii.engine file should contain

 #!/bin/bash

 source /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex
 texexec $1

 Don't forget to chmod +x.
 Good luck!
 Best regards: OK

Re: [NTG-context] latest beta and file mismatch problem

2009-12-02 Thread Bowen Alan C.
Thanks, Mojca.

With .bash_profile now reading . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex, I
ran texexec --make --all successfully. But I still could not process a .tex
file: the error message was

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (Web2C 2009)
 \write18 enabled.
 (/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-context/web2c/natural.tcx)

kpathsea: Running mktexfmt cont-en.fmt
mktexfmt: No such file or directory
I can't find the format file `cont-en.fmt'!
TeXExec | runtime: 0.21928

So I removed texmf-osx-intel from /ConTeXtMinimals/tex/. re-ran texexec --make
--all. The error message is now

texexec: Command not found.

Which one is the right one?

 The second one.

I should add that when my .bash_profile has
 . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex
 /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/
I cannot compile any file because of the mismatch between format and base
 files.

This is because you need to regenerate the formats (texexec --make
--all). Please send the log if this fails to help.

If I change my .bash_profile to
 . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex
 /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
 as suggested in

No, that's not been suggested. You may not use the second argument
that way. If you read carefully again you'll see that there are **two
different recipes**. You need to use just one of them.

When you want to use context, you need to initialize the tree by typing:

 [first recipe]
  . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex
 in your shell or add

 [second recipe]
  /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
to PATH variable if you want to set it permanently.
This can usually be done in .bashrc, .bash_profile
(or whatever file is used to initialize your shell).

 I get the error message
The argument /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin is not a
 valid TEXROOT path.
 (There is no file
 /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin/texmf/tex/plain/base/plain.tex)

 Yes, that makes sense. Since
/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin is NOT the root of
distribution. That's just the PATH to your binaries.

Just go with the first approach (the one that reports mismatching
 formats at the moment), run
texexec --make --all
and send the log if it fails to work.

The good news:

• context --version works

The bad news
• compiling

My .bash_profile file consists of the line “.

Thanks to Otared and Dick Koch, I now have MKII up and running again.

The primary change in TeXshop involved setting the path in Preferences/Engine to

/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin.

for the MKII engine, Otared suggested
#!/bin/bash
source /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex
texexec $1

What would be best for the MKIV and XeTeX engines?

Right now I have,

MKIV
#!/bin/bash
export PATH=/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64l/bin:$PATH
export TEXMFCACHE=/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-cache
context $1

XeTeX
#!/bin/bash
export PATH=/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin:$PATH
texexec --xtx $1

 /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin

Why the second argument? (It's optional, but wrong in this case.)

When I try to compile any file, I get:
FatalError : Your format does not match the base files!

How do I fix this? (texexec --make --all did not do the trick.)

I suspect that you don't call the right texexec when you run it (maybe
you have another texexec in TeX Live?)

as suggested in
When you want to use context, you need to initialize the tree by typing:
  . /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/setuptex
in your shell or add
  /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
to PATH variable if you want to set it permanently.
This can usually be done in .bashrc, .bash_profile

Hi, Otared,

Thanks for the tip. The first problem is that ./first-setup.sh installs both
files texmf-os-x and texmf-osx-intgel. The second is that I now get

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-1.40.10 (Web2C 2009)

 (/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-context/web2c/natural.tcx)

mktexfmt: No such file or directory
I can't find the format file `cont-en.fmt'!

when I compile as file with both or with either one alone.

 Hi Alan,

If you are running Mac OS X 10.6.1 or later, the right folder (or directory)
 is
 ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin

In any case you can test this just by changing the name of either of the
folders and try to typeset a file (you can change the name of the folder for
example in the Finder). Do you use TeXShop or any other GUI application?

A last point: at the beginning of the ConTeXt minimals, at one point I
installed the minimals in the /Application/ folder (directory) but had
constantly problems due to the rights of writing and executing, I think. Now
I have the Minimals in another place and everything works fine.

 Good luck!

 Best regards: OK

 Hi, Mojca—

You have a great crystal ball! I have set my platform to 64-bit kernel
startup mode, re-started, and re-installed the latest from the minimals
 using ./firstsetup.sh

Still no recognition of context --version and luatex --version.
As for your other suggestions, I get “command not found” for mtxrun,
 texmfstart, texexec, mtexlsr.

As you can probably also see in your crystal ball, I am at the limits of my
knowledge of unix and how ConTeXt, luatex are installed. So while I am
happy to test what you say and provide feedback, please don’t get trapped
into dealing with me about a problem that will eventually go away anyway.
(My installation does still work, after all-- well, except for some
unresolved problems with multi-page tables, but that is another thread.)

 1. Check if you have either executed source setuptex (. setuptex) or
 set the path explicitely
 2. Please check the contents of /path/to/your/context/tex by typing
ls /path/to/your/context/tex
ls /path/to/your/context/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin
 3. What does
echo $PATH
say (after making sure that . setuptex is executed)?

 Mojca

Mojca—

1. When I open Terminal, I always see the line
Setting /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex as ConTeXt root.
so I take it that .setuptex has been executed

2. ls /Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex gets:
mysetuptex setuptex.batsetuptex.tmftexmf-cache texmf-local
texmf-project
setuptexsetuptex.cshtexmf texmf-context texmf-osx-intel

3. echo $PATH gets:
/Applications/ConTeXtMinimals/tex/texmf-osx-64/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin

./firstsetup.sh

Still no recognition of context --version and luatex --version.
As for your other suggestions, I get “command not found” for mtxrun,
texmfstart, texexec, mtexlsr.

As you can probably also see in your crystal ball, I am at the limits of my
knowledge of unix and how ConTeXt, luatex are installed. So while I am happy
to test what you say and provide feedback, please don’t get trapped into
dealing with me about a problem that will eventually go away anyway. (My
installation does still work, after all-- well, except for some unresolved
problems with multi-page tables, but that is another thread.)

Very best, Alan

I have switched the minimal example to tabulate. The problem is that this
entails little progress because I can find no documentation that explains
(a) how to format (e.g., center) the content of specific cells---\REF does not
seem to work any more.
(b) how to get weighted rules---\HL[3] no longer works
(c) how to avoid getting the label for the table on the first page
(d) how to get a decent page break.
I have checked Hans' MAPs article as we all as the wiki. There is reference to
a new tabulate module that you were working on, but the link goes nowhere.

I can work around (a) and (b) if I have to, but (c) and (d) are crucial.

Re: [NTG-context] local footnote (Tables) problem

2009-11-21 Thread Bowen Alan C.
Please excuse my persistence. The following is a minimal file illustrating a
problem that I am having with a multipage table with local footnotes. Setting
split=yes or split=repeat in \setuptables produces obviously unsatisfactory
results. What I need is a multipage table that has good page divisions and puts
the table's label on the last page only. I have been unable to find
documentation that would help with this yet.

I am using MK2 in today’s Context in the Context Minimals.

[NTG-context] local footnote (Tables) problem

2009-11-18 Thread Bowen Alan C.

I adapted the file that you sent me so that the table extends beyond one page.
But, as you will see, the table still prints on just one page. Moreover, if I

No, what you need is \placetable[split,...]{...}{...}.

You don't need starttables/stoptables because the table environment goes
into the split mode itself when you set either \setuptable[split=yes] or
 \placetable[split].

[NTG-context] local footnote (Tables) problem

After further experimentation, I am still stumped; so I am resending this.

The attached file will compile only if I comment out

(a) header=2pc in \setuplayout
or
(b) \setupbodyfont[lmodern,rm,10.5pt]
or
(c) \placelegend
or
(d) \dorecurse{3}{\input knuth}

I am running MK2 using the penultimate beta in the ConTeXt Minimals. There is
no improvement when I run the file on the ConteXt wiki (latest beta).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

(a) header=2pc in \setuplayout
or
(b) \setupbodyfont[lmodern,rm,10.5pt]
or
(c) \placelegend
or
(d) \dorecurse{3}{\input knuth}

I am stumped as to why this should be so. There is obviously something that I
am just not seeing.

I am running MK2 using the latest beta in the ConTeXt Minimals.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Alan

[NTG-context] underdot in Greek module

2009-11-03 Thread Bowen Alan C.

In MKII (with the latest MKIV),

“!” no longer seems to produce underdots (sublinear dots).

\usemodule[ancientgreek]
[font=GreekDioxipe,scale=1.15,altfont=GreekCanonica,altscale=0.9]

\starttext
\localgrk{a!n!'h!r}

\stoptext

One can work around this this \d{\grk{...}}, but ...

And is there a command or key for producing diareseis in Greek, again,
using MKII?

Re: [NTG-context] underdot in Greek module

2009-11-03 Thread Bowen Alan C.

Thanks, Thomas.

“\localgrk” is a typo.

The diaeresis command “ ” runs afoul of TeXShop and its eagerness to
present open and closing quotation marks whenever one types . I will
have to look into this: it is not an obvious preference setting.

The lack of a sublinear dot in GreekDioxipe is a pain, since it is the
font that I am currently using for Aestimatio and I need to keep it
for the present volume. I will change it for the next volume. In the
meantime, I will have to resort to my kludge.

All best, Alan

This has never worked with this particular font because it doesn't
have a sublinear dot. I get the expected output with a font which
does have it, e.g. GreekGentium. (Btw, localgrk is not a know
command.)

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. These all work for me:
\localgreek{'i i `i}.

Of course: the Latin Modern fonts are, inheriting from Computer
Modern, as is the whole Gyre family. For the latter you might say there
is no real parametrization, but the Metatype1 sources are not available.

That’s not what I understood from the papers I’ve read. The original CM
fonts are parametrized, but the LM set is METATYPE1 taken from traced
bitmaps of CM. I.e., you cannot easily generate the 15.7pt set.

From all I’ve learned by lurking on Typophile.com, yes; the $20–40 per

required to produce it.

However the conversion of the numbers into characters does not work.
Instead the [conversion=characters] is displayed at the top of the

Otherwise compliation of your code in MKII results in a correct
conversion of the numbers to characters, but indeed the width is
restricted to a fairly small column. You can circumvent this by
adding a width= to the list of options [conversion=characters, width=

[NTG-context] resetting localfootnote counter query

with local footnotes marked by alphabetic characters. When I process
the file, I get complaints like:

Is there a way to reset the localfootnote counter so that ConTeXt is
happy and the footnotes marked by arabic numerals are undisturbed.
Something like \resetnumber[localfootnotes] perhaps, though this does
not work.
