[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Northern Goshawk
There's been a continuing immature Northern Goshawk in the western part of Massapequa Preserve - I've seen it 4 times in the last 2 weeks. (I live a block away from the Preserve) From what I know it has been seen in the Preserve as far north as the Walker Street parking lot and as far south as Pittsburgh Ave. I last saw it yesterday afternoon flying over the neighborhood west of the preserve around Jerusalem Ave. I know of another occasion where it hunted a rabbit in someone's yard so it might pay to check the trees in the surrounding area. Except for one occasion where it was resting it seems very active, seemingly disappearing into the woods however I believe it's accustomed to human activity and not skittish. Good luck if anyone tries to find it- it's not easy to find - wanted to get the word out before the weekend in case anyone was up for a challenge. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve
Was by the sw corner of Massapequa Lake this morning and saw a Blackburnian Warbler. (9:30). Went back, this time by Pittsburgh Ave pond after a short trip to Jones Beach and saw the typical birds for this spot: Osprey, lots of Baltimore Orioles and Yellow Warblers, Black and White Warbler, Northern Parula, Warbling Vireo, Red Eye Vireo. Heard but did not see a Black Billed Cuckoo. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: GC Kinglets!!! American Woodcocks
Hi Everyone, After realizing that Jones Beach West End had zero visibility, I went to Massapequa Preserve starting at Linden Street heading south to the pond parellel to Doris Place and back. Saw 2 or 3 American Woodcocks right away. There were lots of Song Sparrows, Robins, a handful of Phoebes, and a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker and Fox Sparrow were nice to see. The biggest surprise were the Golden Crowned Kinglets - they were by far the most numerous bird. A conservative estimate was at least 150 in a 2 hour period. Also saw my FOS Catbird, numerous Red wing Blackbirds and Grackles. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Snow Goose, Wood Duck etc, signs of Spring
Hi Everyone, I stopped at Massapequa Preserve to check out the previously reported possible hybrid Ross/ Snow Goose. I don't see anything indicating a hybrid - looks like a Snow Goose to me - in any event it was very vocal with the Canada Geese - it was at the Pittsburgh Ave Pond and the stream south of Clark St. Also in the stream, but North of Clark St was a continuing male Wood Duck. Other waterfowl included Pintail, Bufflehead, Ruddy, Black Duck, Coots and Mallards - many walking on the ice giving good photo ops. At my house (2 blocks from the preserve) Cardinals and Song Sparrows were singing. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve Birds (Nassau County)
Anxious to bird off the barrier beach on this cold and windy day, I headed out to Massapequa Preserve, hoping that the recent three inches of powder would cover the very icy trails. Upon arriving I parked on Parkside Boulevard and headed in to the "Pittsburgh Ave." Pond. There were a number of Canada Geese present and one smallish white goose. My first thought was that I had found the elusive Ross's Goose, but as the bird turned sideways the bill was too long for a Ross's Goose and had a prominent grinning patch. Nevertheless, the small size of the bird, along with the rounded head and short neck, suggested a Ross's x Snow Goose hybrid. After consulting some photos of Snow Geese, the bill did seem intermediate between Snow Goose and Ross's Goose. I have posted some photos of the goose on my flickr site, along with photos of Ross's and Snow Geese. Heading further north I was pleasantly surprised to see the Orange-crowned Warbler feeding in the same stand of cattails where it was found on the Southern Nassau CBC in early January. There was a fair variety of waterfowl in the stream including Wood Duck (2) Pintail, American Wigeon, Gadwall, and Green-winged Teal. My FOS Common Grackle feeding along the creek edge was a reminder that blackbirds are moving north despite the weather. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve - 1/19
Both Warblers (NASHVILLE and ORANGE-CROWNED) were eventually seen today with some persistence at the preserve. They were spotted just north of the Walker Street entrance. I stood by the abandoned air conditioner in the stream and watched them feed on the cat-tails across from the stream. I actually looked for the cat-tails to move slightly and then I was able to target where they were. A local told me of a GREAT-HORNED owl he heard in the area at night. Just of note: Things got quiet in the later morning if you were there then, probably due to a Cooper's/Sharp-Shinned HAWK (not sure which one) in the area. I actually saw him crash into the cat-tails, I followed where he went and observed he did not get any of the warblers. Also in this area of interest were some downy woodpeckers (pecking at the cat-tails), white-breasted nuthatch (heard), and a number of chickadees. I walked south of the Walker Street entrance to see the grey SCREECH OWL, who was visible in his usual hole. A trip north of Clark Street turned up a continuing male WOOD DUCK in the stream, along with a hybrid mallard of sorts. I also spotted a female WOOD DUCK in the Pittsburgh Ave. pond. Did not notice any Eurasian Wigeons in the pond, but heard from someone they were more up north. The weather says winter, but the birds said spring. Pulling into the Walker Street parking lot the first bird to greet me was an Eastern Phoebe. Walking over the bridge just west of the parking lot, a Gray Catbird sat out on a wild rose bush feeding and preening. Walking north on the paved pedestrian I started my vigil for two warblers, Nashville and Orange-crowned. They did not disappoint. Both appeared around noon feeding on the cattails growing in the marsh on the northside of the parking lot and keeping company with one another. Some other birds noted were: Rusty Blackbird, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Winter Wren, Swamp Sparrow and an American Tree Sparrow seen there yesterday. Robert A. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve Birds (Nassau Co.)
With the high winds forecasted for today we decided to stay away from the beach and head inland to Massapequa Preserve (MP). We missed most the birds found on the Southern Nassau CBC at MP, but found a few goodies. A lone Common Raven was calling as it flew over the Least Bittern (my name) Pond, while an Eastern Phoebe was seen flycatching behind a shrub barrier on the western most (unpaved) trail, north of the Pittsburg Ave. entrance. Other birds of interest included Wood Duck, Gray Catbird, Brown Creeper, Hermit Thrush, and Winter Wren. We headed east and stopped at the West Sayville Golf Course where two male Eurasian Wigeons were with American Wigeon in the waterhole west of the main roadway entrance. At Patchogue Lake, there was a good variety of waterfowl, including a single Eurasian Wigeon, both Canvasback and Redhead, and the most American Coots (150) we have seen in quite some time. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve Birds (Nassau Co.)
Sue and I spent a few hours birding at Massapequa Preserve (MP) this morning. We came up with a decent list of half-hardies and early winter malingerers. Waterfowl numbers on the Pittsburg Ave. Pond was low, but did include a female Wood Duck. We recorded both kinglets around the pond as well as Gray Catbird. We headed north up the bike trail to see what we could see. A Viriginia Rail tape played at the pond north of Pittsburg Ave.(famous for nesting Least Bitterns a few year ago) turned up nothing, but two Marsh Wrens were busy calling in the Phragmites on the East side of the pond along the bike trail. Near the foot bridge on the West side of the pond we found an Orange-crowned Warbler. Sparrow numbers seemed below average and we did not see any Fox Sparrows. However, compared to locations we birded on two earlier bird counts MP seemed positively jumping with activity. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Yellow Billed Cuckoo, Wood Thrush
Hi Everyone, I stopped by Jones Beach West End where there wasn't anything unusual except a a Glossy Ibis flying overhead - one landed at the pond west of the Teddy Roosevelt Sanctuary (area closed off) There were a lot of songbirds at Massapequa Preserve notably Cedar Waxwings, Eastern Kingbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, Baltimore Orioles - the highlight was on the west side trail between Jerusalem and Pittsburgh Ave - saw a Yellow Billed Cuckoo and a singing Wood Thrush. I highly recommend this part of the preserve. There were also a lot of newly hatched birds throughout the preserve. There were a few Wood Ducks flying over the lake by Merrick Road. Hi Everyone, I went for a walk with my daughter around the pond by Pittsburgh Ave - spring has finally arrived here also -saw a pair of Baltimore Orioles, pair of Eastern Kingbirds, good amount of Goldfinches and Catbirds. Most numerous migrant seemed to be Warbling Vireos. There were several Ospreys fishing - at one point a Crow and an Eastern Kingbird were taking turns chasing one away. A Mute Swan was aggressive to a pair of Canada Geese - a moment later a Red-winged Blackbird divebombed the Mute Swan. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve
A walk along the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail in the Massapequa Preserve this morning, between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway, produced little in the way of birds. Half-a dozen Yellow-rumped warblers were the sole representatives of that group. Also had a few Blue-gray gnatcatchers, Black-capped chickadees, a Tufted titmouse and one Northern flicker (female). Had three species of swallows coursing back and forth over Mary's Lake - Barn, Tree, and Northern Rough-winged. Did see two classic harbingers of Spring: several mourning cloaks and a Spring azure blue butterfly which were most welcome sights. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve/ Bryant Park today - no new birds, note about Screech Owl
Hi Everyone, I stopped at Massapequa Preserve before work this morning and although it was very "birdy" I didn't see any new migrants. Cardinals, Robins, Red Winged Blackbirds, Grackles were all over as well as Downy Woodpeckers - a Carolina Wren put on a show singing for the sunrise and a pair of Red Bellied Woodpeckers put on their own kind of show. There's a nesting pair of Mute Swans on the smaller pond. ***I only saw the red morph Screech Owl for the last few weeks - can someone please message me if they see the grey one? A few local birders and myself are concerned if something happened to it. (not assuming the worst yet) During my break, I walked over to Bryant Park with my friend and local NYC birder Mike (has a thing for Juncos and Grackles) - we just saw Song and White Throated Sparrows - we talked to another birder who also noted it was slow, but mentioned he saw Hermit Thrush and a Swamp Sparrow earlier. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: usual suspects, Green Winged Teal, Pied Billed Grebes
Hi Everyone, I was at Massapequa Preserve today early in the morning and again late afternoon - usual suspects mostly...Cardinals, Robins and Red-winged Blackbirds were very vocal. On the pond by Pittsburgh Avenue, I saw 2 Pied Billed Grebes and 2 Green Winged Teals. The GW Teals were getting a little rowdy - I couldn't tell if they were being territorial or trying to kick it - it's hard to tell sometimes. On my blog, I'm going to try to start adding video clips if I get decent footage. I'll try to post the teals shortly. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve this evening: Grackles and Wilson's Snipe
Hi Everyone, I walked home from the LIRR station by going through the preserve around sunset - the pond parrellel to Doris Place was full with Common Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds in the reeds. The noise was deafening (mostly from the Grackles). I found another Wilson's Snipe landing in the stream a little North of that pond. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Snipe, Red Neck Grebe, Hermit Thrush, Osprey, Screech Owls, etc
Hi Everyone, Long story short, I searched the Preserve for 12 hours from Southern State Parkway to Merrick Road and continued south to the bay finding 59 species. Red Winged Blackbirds, Robins and Common Grackles were found throughout the Preserve. On the pond by Brady Park was the continuing Red Necked Grebe, an Osprey catching a fish, a Muscovy and a few interesting looking domestic Mallards. There seemed to be a high concentration of woodpeckers on the North end of the preserve by Linden Street. Massapequa Lake had an impressive number and variety of ducks and a Double-Crested Comorant. Other highlights were a Hermit Thrush, Brown Headed Cowbirds, the red and grey morph Screech Owls and Horned Grebes on the bay. Signs of Spring were Skunk Cabbage and Spring Peepers. Along with Mike and Michelle, 2 wonderful fellow birders, we found a Wilson's Snipe right around sunset. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve
I spent the day at the preserve yesterday and saw a total of fifty (50) species. The pond at Merrick Road was particularly active and covered with ducks, gulls, grebes etc. Adding to Robert Taylor's email, I saw a dead Great Blue Heron next to the Pittsburgh Ave. pond. I saw no obvious trauma, and my initial guess was it was just a victim of the harsh winter. I hope it wasn't killed by someone or their dog. -- Joseph O'Sullivan -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: ducks and swans, signs of spring
Hi Everyone, I was at the Preserve today around 5pm by the pond at Pittsburgh Avenue and walked up a little passed Clark St.. Redwinged Blackbirds were out in full force singing, as were Cardinals and Song Sparrows. I saw some Skunk Cabbage along the stream so the first flowers are starting to "bloom". On the pond were mostly Mallards, some Black Ducks, Canada Geese, and Mute Swans. There was one female Common Merganser on the pond and a drake flew overhead. Also saw a single Wood Duck and Green Winged Teal. At the pond by Sunrise Highway again were mostly Mallards with a few domestic types mixed in. Some Hooded Mergansers were also present. One thing that seemed odd was that I found at least 2 dead Mute Swans (possibly 3) a little south of Clark St. I just hope that they weren't killed by someone. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Common Mergansers
Hi Everyone, This morning I missed my LIRR train by one minute so rather than stand on the platform I decided to walk into the preserve for a little while. At the pond by Brady Park, I saw 15+ drake Common Mergansers and at least 5 females. I'm sure there were more females but I didn't have my binoculars. Also present were coots, pied billed grebes, a few great blue herons, gadwall and mallards. Usually this pond doesn't have great diversity of waterfowl as the other ponds, but once in a while will have some surprises. Cardinals and Redwinged Blackbirds were singing along the water's edge. Hi Everyone, I was at Massapequa Preserve today around the parking lot and pond by Pittsburgh Avenue. Song Sparrows, Cardinals and Red Wing Blackbirds were singing so hopefully that's a good sign that Spring is on the way. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: Eurasian Wigeon and Hybrid
Hi Everyone, After meeting a fellow birder checking out Massapequa Preserve - I decided to check it out too - I live 2 blocks away but haven't been there in a while. At the pond by Pittsburgh Ave, I saw a Hybrid Eurasian Wigeon, and at the pond by New Hampshire, saw a Eurasian Wigeon with some American Wigeons. I had a perfect photo ready but someone "walking" (no leash) their dogs came by and flushed the wigeons. Best place to check at the smaller "New Hampshire pond" isn't the pond itself which freezes, but rather the stream that flows around it.
I had a perfect photo ready but someone walking (no leash) their dogs came by and flushed the wigeons. Best place to check at the smaller New Hampshire pond isn't the pond itself which freezes, but rather the stream that flows around it. (usually on the west side by the woods) Last winter, there were 3 beautiful drakes and a hybrid through March but the preserve is still a reliable place if you're looking for Eurasian Wigeons. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve: nice looking drake Eurasian Wigeon
Hi Everyone, I successfully searched for a Eurasian Wigeon at the Massapequa Preserve - was at the pond between New Hampshire and Rhode Island Avenues (the pond is frozen but there's a stream around it with flowing water.) Was in the company of American Wigeons and a Northern Shoveler. I believe the Eurasian Wigeon is an annual visitor - there's usually 3 drakes and a hybrid for the last few years. Also saw Carolina Wrens and Flickers off the trails. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve - Cedar Waxwings, Eurasian Wigeon
Hi everyone, This is my first post (thanks to Andrew Baksh for posting for me in the past)- I live in Massapequa and normally bird at the preserve and Jones Beach West end. I post pics on my blog http://longislandbirding.blogspot.com. I was at Massapequa Preserve from 9:30am-10:30am today - beautiful fall day - highlights were a flock of 20+ cedar waxwings by the Pittsburgh Avenue entrance feeding on berries. On the nearby lake/ pond, saw 2 Eurasian Wigeon, American Wigeon, Green Winged Teal, and Gadwall. Also saw small flocks of robins, a kinglet, cardinal, song sparrows singing and heard goldfinches overhead. I'll post my pics during the weekend. I couldn't get a close shot of the Eurasian Wigeons since they were on the far side of the pond. I'm confident they'll stick around if you want to try looking for them. For the past few years, there has been 3 Eurasian Wigeons + one hybrid during the winter - hopefully they'll all be back soon. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa preserve Nassau County Black-Billed Cuckoo
This morning I saw a Black-billed Cuckoo in Massapequa Preserve, about 1/4 mile north of Pittsburg Ave on the dirt path running n-s on the west side of the preserve. It caught and ate 1 or 2 caterpillars, so did not appear to be carrying food, which would indicate breeding. Besides the usual breeders the only thing of note was an immature Cooper's hawk being chased by Jays and a Kingbird. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve, Long Island
I spent the day at the Massapequa Preserve. I saw 53 species, pretty good for a winter's day of birding. There were some early arrivals, like a pair of ospreys, a pair of great egrets, a hermit thrush and some tree sparrows. Somewhat rare according to ebird were three Eurasian wigeons. The most unusual sighting was a white-winged crossbill in the mixed pine-hardwoods forest on the greenbelt trail. For those people who aren't on ebird here's the list: Canada Goose 90 Mute Swan 11 Gadwall 12 Eurasian Wigeon 3 American Wigeon 8 American Black Duck 10 Mallard 100 Northern Shoveler 1 Green-winged Teal 3 Ring-necked Duck 4 Hooded Merganser 5 Red-breasted Merganser 8 Ruddy Duck 13 Pied-billed Grebe 4 Double-crested Cormorant 6 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 2 Osprey 2 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 American Coot 9 Ring-billed Gull 75 Herring Gull 1 Great Black-backed Gull 1 Rock Pigeon 20 Mourning Dove 7 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Downy Woodpecker 1 Hairy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 1 Blue Jay 1 Tree Swallow 8 Black-capped Chickadee 10 Tufted Titmouse 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 2 Brown Creeper 3 Winter Wren 4 Carolina Wren 2 Hermit Thrush 1 American Robin 25 Northern Mockingbird 2 Brown Thrasher 1 European Starling 10 Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 4 White-throated Sparrow 7 White-crowned Sparrow 1 Northern Cardinal 6 Red-winged Blackbird 10 Common Grackle 20 White-winged Crossbill 1 House Sparrow 30 -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve
Just returned from a walk through the middle part of the Preserve. After Shawn Billerman"s post I went looking for winter wren. I finally found 1 after about 20 minutes. Also seen were many white throats, a few songs, some Carolina wrens, 1 golden crowned kinglet, chickadees, white breasted nut hatch, hairy and downy woodpeckers. I scanned the pond at Pittsburgh as I was leaving. There were between 250 and 300 Canada geese, and at least 1 cackling goose. Most of the geese flew off between 3:00 and 3:15 as I left. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve
Massapequa Preserve 23 Dec The two male Eurasian Wigeon were with a small group of American Wigeon on the upper pond. The lower pond (at Pittsburgh Ave.) had a number of Gadwall and 2 Ruddy Ducks. The stream between the ponds had group of Mallards and Wigeon feeding in the stream. Included was the male "hybrid" wigeon. This bird has the buff colored forehead, gray body and a red face except for the American Wigeon's green eye patch. A good blend of features of both species, but, to my eye, not as pretty as either one. [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve Birds (Nassau Co)
Massapequa Preserve continues to be a good location for lingering warblers this fall, with a late immature Yellow Warbler seen this morning. In the past few weeks warblers at MP have included Orange- crowned, Black-throated Blue, Parula, and Palm. Last Sunday a late Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was on the west side of the Pittsburgh Ave. pond. The drake Eurasian Wigeon continues on the pond in the company of American Wigeon. The continuing closure of the barrier beaches have been a source of frustration for area birders, even more so when Annie McIntyre reported that a Northern Lapwing was seen and photographed by a State employee in the median at Robert Moses State Park yesterday, but not observed by Annie today. Lets hope that the beaches open in time for the Christmas CBC's! [nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve - Orange-crowned Warbler
Around noon I had a bright Orange-crowned Warbler along the stream about 100 yards or so north of the Pittsburg Avenue pond. Besides the usual suspects, I had a Winter Wren, 4 Fox Sparrows - one missing most of its tail -, and 2 Snow Geese on the lawn of the school at Pittsburgh -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[nysbirds-l] Massapequa Preserve Nassau County - 2 OC Warblers
This morning I found 2 Orange-crowned Warblers at Massapequa Preserve. The first was opposite Ontario street, seen around 11 AM. Park by the school at Pittsbugh Avenue, on the western side of the preserve. As you enter the preserve go left (north) along the wide dirt path that parallels Parkside. After about 10 minutes there is a small overgrown weedy field on the right, where the bird was feeding with WT Sparrows. If you look back west through the trees there is a street sign at the intersection of Ontario and Parkside for a reference. The second was found about 40 minutes later on the paved north south path that runs along the eastern side, right at marker 1.8. The eastern path was recently paved and mile markers are painted on the blacktop. Both birds were feeding on some white cotton like flowers -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
